The Market between the popular buildings of 60s

BEFORE The “Lavatrici� represent an experiment belonging to the 60s of the Casa Ina projects, with which they had to build popular housing for those who remained in unfavorable economic conditions. The chosen area is placed between the two large cement blocks that characterize the entire complex. It has underground premises used for commercial operations (some of them closed). These are at the level of the road that ran through the entire complex, but the roof served as a pedestrian crossing between the two buildings.

AFTER The project involves the creation of a market. The main idea of the project is to give the exiled place its own identity. Thus, the nature of community and belonging of the market was the pretext for the creation of a square. This represents the symbolic element capable of restoring centrality and identity, a place with which people can identify themselves. The flooring chosen is that of red brick, typical of the Italian square, which creates a sharp contrast with the surrounding cement. The market, characterized by a regular plan and a ceiling pierced by large skylights, overlooks the square.

ASSONOMETRIA

ANALYSIS

The study carried out on an existing Eduardo Souto de Moura project was fundamental for the birth of the project. The project of the Braga Market comes to life in the 80s. It is characterized by three signs, underlined by walls that try to create a new urban structure of the city, which until then had no basis. What Eduardo de Moura does is create a public market that acts as a link between two clearly separated parts of the neighborhood. A long rectilinear corridor, covered by a long roof supported by 32 columns of circular base. The failure of the work comes after a couple of decades, placing Edoardo in front of a new challenge. Invited to decide the fate of the abandoned work (1999-2001), Souto de Moura

initially proposes the demolition, then identifies a series of interventions aimed at defining a new configuration that at the same time puts an accent on the merits of the original configuration A subtraction project is defined, in which the most significant and radical intervention is represented by the removal of the cover. This gesture, if on the one hand eliminates the function of the neighborhood market, on the other hand emphasizes the nature of the journey that was also present in the original project. The architect’s greatest intuition is to keep the 32 pillars standing up, which automatically become the project of a new public space, defining a void that is both a space devoted to being shared and an element of connection.

IL MARE D’ALCAMO Alcamo Marina: Reconstructing The Coastal Landscape.

The area of ​​ Alcamo Marina, taken as a whole represents a large sample of building disorder . It clearly demonstrates how homes without homogeneity have been built by many people, to satisfy a need for rest. Alcamo Marina presents itself as a seaside resort characterized by the absence of a real urban structure; it is the result of a mere aggregation of houses without a defined development plan. The project takes shape from an analysis of Alcamo when it is most experienced, that is during the summer season. The data confirm the current situation: in August we reach 20.000, unlike the 800 that characterize the rest of the year. The project aims therefore to enhance what exists, imagining a correct functioning and a correct vision of the city throughout the year. The project aims to fill the lack of certain services and infrastructures of a public

nature essential for the proper functioning of the city. This design vision is consistent with the ordinariness of the place, perceived as an opportunity to work on and not necessarily as a negative characteristic. Small interventions, which do not require long implementation times, with the aim of obtaining changes and feedback in a short time. It also wants to highlight, by directing these interventions to the public administration, the absence of a collective identity, or rather, its presence in the exclusively private sphere. It is evident to enhance the quality of the urban space through the use of technical requirements, intended as architectural expedients regenerating spaces. Unique project made of five circumscribed interventions, auotonomes, but at the same time complementary, both from the formal and functional point of view.

Being complementary but at the same time autonomous, it is not necessary to identify a precise line of action, but this can vary depending on various factors and the economic resources available. Analyzing the costs and revenues of each individual operation, various possibilities can be identified. Through these things we can reach the overall planning vision. Therefore, five different proposals have been identified on a timeline based on the different costs and implementation times, highlighting the adaptability of the project to different situations. The Rotonda sul mare requires a high cost of construction and produces a limited gain distributed over the years; The Railway road needs a medium cost of construction and produces a limited gain distributed over the years; The Connections need a low cost of implementation and produce a limited gain distributed over the years; The Shoreline needs a low construction cost and produces a high gain distributed over the years; The Porto ai Magazzinazzi requires a high cost of construction and produces a high profit distributed over the years.

Redevolpment project of abandoned oil facoty in Taranto, Puglia

The project was born in a very common context on the Italian territory: vast economic areas abandoned due to the economic crisis. The site has several built in bad conditions. This shed specifically is very compromised on a structural level, the project has the priority to put the structure in secure, and then exploit it to the fullest. Educational spaces are created inside,

organized on different levels. The new structure is composed of beams and pillars that remain visible in all spaces. the central one of the building is also invaded by the structure, in the form of a grid. The main element of the project is the stepped square that digs the ground creating different entrances to the building, as if this attracted people from below.

ANALYSIS Palazzo INA rises in all its grandeur up to a height of 19 floors above ground, constituting, for those coming from outside Milan, a scenic portal of the city. The choice of positioning the building perpendicular to Corso Sempione allows to limit its impact on the street front, allowing also to direct all stays towards the center of Milan, with a consequent privileged view on the upper floors of the building. The theme of the road, intended as the founding element of the city, assumes a key role in this project. The building, on the ground floor, is in fact also designed as a promenade, parallel to what should have been a new crossroads of the Corso but never built because of RAI needs. The north-west façade, the one that shows itself to those entering the city, is composed of four adjoining towers. The four piles of long overlapping balconies widen towards the course, to underline the attractive tension. On the other front, the lodges (on which the living area of the apartments insists) move the organism in the opposite direction, as if withdrawing from the course. The project takes an example from the experience of Bottoni’s Casa Ina builiding. An impressive building overlooking the port of Genoa. The part below is reserved for offices, while the upper part which rises on three large pylons is composed of apartments. The pylons serve as a link, from the moment they house the stairwell and the elevator. The building is cut by an existing road, which runs along the port. As in Bottoni, the project envisages a typical plant that is repeated for three floors. The structure of the lower part is a beam and pillar grid, while the upper one is supported by the pylons.
