ABOUT ME My passion is Architecture in all its shapes. From the design of minimum details to big urban designs. Most of all I belive that architecture is about the people who live in it. I focus on designing for the people, foreseeing how their experiences will be, what feelings I can give them and specially how whatever I design will improve their quality of life and affect their environment in a possitive way. I do what I do because I love it. I'm a constant hard worker, perfectionist, creative and always looking for ways to improve both professisonally and personally. I love hand drawing, music and to study other languages and cultures.

THE GUAIRE RIVER LABORATORY CARACAS CITY, VENEZUELA

MASTER PLAN

This class was integrated by a group of 8 students, myself included. Together we realized the investigation and analysis of the river from the environmental point of view. Also the practicality of turning the Francisco Fajardo Highway into an avenue and the current interrupted connections in the city. After this analysis we worked individualy on developing each part of this master plan to recover the river`s role in the city, providing public life and connection. Each proposal, apart from its own original vision, provides pedestrian zones, bikepaths, pluvial water treatment, public transoprtation stops and public recreational space.

This project was directed by professors Elisa Silva and Maria Mercedes Hernรกndez, assited by Lino Cรกceres. The final objective of the Project was to create a video to be publicated on the social networks with the whole pilot plan and investigation. It can be found in the next link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMcOF8hWy8k

ANALISIS

This project was directed by professors Elisa Silva and Maria Mercedes Hernรกndez, assited by Lino Cรกceres. The final objective of the Project was to create a video to be publicated on the social networks with the whole pilot plan and investigation. It can be found in the next link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMcOF8hWy8k

Making an activity and usage analysis of the zone of the city in which the pilot plan were to be porposed, it showed up some predominant zones in which the encounter of multiple activities which envolved people concentration were currently happening. This zones would be the starting point to propose a public space that would respond to the river withouth the presencce of the Highway and create a park in the boarders of the river with different programs and uses depending on the character of each zone. The analysis also indicated the right places to propose more bridges to allow the connection North-South of the city, creating this connections in the zones with higher concentration of public activities.

MASTER PLAN

This project was the second fase of The Guaire River Laboratory. After completing the big strategy that would allow the current Guaire river into a park for the city, solved the sanitation plan for the water that falls into it, build a new mobility proposal for the people in the city after eliminating the elevated high way that now hides the river and select the strategic points for new bridges and conections through the river, each member of the team would design a segment of the master plan with a public space proposal. This proposal is for a bridge that is currently used almost fully by cars, preventing pedestrians to have a comfortable space for transit in a point were two very frecuented areas of the city are connected.

a bridge for people CARACAS CITY, VENEZUELA

Location in master plan

ZONE 1 This area is highly frequented by pedestrians for being the conection with the zones of Chacaito and El Rosal with Las Mercedes. The idea is to create optimal conditions for pedestrian’s confort, give space and and instalations for the bike users and restore the mercedes bridge with the interaction of the pedestrians coming from the park. To explain the different actions proposed on the master plan it has been divided in 3 zones.

A BRIDGE FOR PEOPLE CARACAS CITY, VENEZUELA

Location in master plan

ZONE 2 In this zone the focus relies on the sidewalks. The idea is to see the street more as an interaction and meeting place than an element in the city that only alows us to move from one place to another. The plan consists on promoting public life in the street with urban equipments, vegetation and ilumination so people feel free to walk this zone of the city in the nights. lso water gardens are proposed to diminish the amount of pluvial water that goes to the river.

A BRIDGE FOR PEOPLE CARACAS CITY, VENEZUELA

ZONE 3

In this zone the focus relies on pluvial water treatment. To create a dynamic recreational space there are proposed flood concrete pools to retain the pluvial water on the rainy season creating water mirrors and skating rinks on dry season. The water will be retained in this pools and then pass by a green filtration zone before its arrival to the river, this to reduce the volume of sediments and tendency to overflowing in this particular area.

THE UNIVERSITY EXPANDING TO THE CITY

Green expansion with public chatacter

The Central University of Caracas is currently separated from the urban dinamics happening on its surroundings. Semi public areas delimited by vegetation

This project consist on identifiying and removing the barriers and boarders which are not allowing the connection of the university with the rest of the city. PUBLIC AND SEMI PUBLIC SPACES

Public space Semi-public space

New proposed constructions

Unification of pedestrian areas by floor textures

The intention is to create a university district instead of the now isolated university, expanding the academic activities to the city. In order to achieve this expansion the green areas of the campus are being open for public access but still controling those spaces with a more private character. A floor treatment is being made in the whole area, expanding pedestrian zones and creating plazas to improve the quality of life on the street for people to walk in the district. This floor texture is also to reduce the transit of vehicles in the zone. This proyect was made in a group of four people, myself included. The other members were: Gabriela EgaĂąez, Manuel Escalona and Carla Zamora.

CONNECTIONS PROPOSED This project’s focus is on the conections to be rescued in the zone in order to allow the expansion of the university to the city. The use of diferent floor textures is to differentiate the proposed remaining areas (red) form the pedestrian transit.ones (light gray). Connection 1 consists on a redesign of an existing plaza which is currently only used on game days bacause of its proximity to the stadiums. The intention is to turn it into a confortable space providing urban furniture, sun protection and using the structure of an existing building to create comercial stores which will bring activity to the plaza inviting public life and pedestrian flow to happen every day along with the redesign of the existing bridge currently not design for pedestrians which will allow the connection with the north of the city. Connection 2 consists on creating a path towards another university at east, adopting the now non used space under the elevated highway and turning it into a remaining space. Connection 3 consist on acknowlodging an access to the university now hardly used by creating a plaza which will have direct conectivity with the boulevard.

UNIVERSITY PLAZA CARACAS CITY, VENEZUELA

MASTER PLAN This proyect consists on using a non functional space of the city to create a connection between two universities in the zone. The intention is to increase the pedestrian flow and not only allow people to walk confortably from one place to another but also to provide recreational and cultural activities to activate the zone with public life.

The proposal consists on the design of a plaza with two main pedestrian paths which allow the mentioned connection between the universities along with 3 buildings to provide activities in the plaza. In the upper side of the plaza a building is proposed with an academic use, for book expositions and cultural activities. in front of the building there is the university chapel surrounded by water to separate it from the constant pedestrian flow.

WAIRA OFFICE BUILDING CARACAS CITY, VENEZUELA

FACADE

The project is an office building for a technologic company name Wayra. The idea is to give open and fluid spaces to create an agreeable working environment in order to achieve the top productivity of the people working in the company. The spaces are design so that the borders between the inside and outside spaces can blur and people can have outdoor sensations even being inside the building, but still providing protection to all the equipments the company needs.

Being surronded by a mountain, all the facades have direct contact with nature, accompanied with a courtyard wich increases the outdoor sensations inside the office.

FLOOR PLAN- LEVEL 1

FLOOR PLAN- GROUND LEVEL

The building provides many interaccion areas to promote the constant interaction between the workers in the company. Several recreational and resting spaces are proposed in the design in order to create a pleasent working environment. The lack of the traditional closed spaces is also to increase the group developing areas, making the working spaces as flexible as possible and also providing areas for individual development and conference rooms.

The structure is mainly of concrete with the exception of the steel structure of theroof. To join both structures a piece is proposed in the top of the columns to be welded to the steel structure.

Vertical steel pieces are used to sustain the efforts of the plicated roof in the main acces of the building and also to supplement the main structure. This pieces are based on Jean Prouve’s “Crutches” used on his project Cachat. Envian-Les-Bains, France. 1957. The plicated roof provides multiple sensations along the building, giving areas with different scales and giving covered terraces in the recreational and eating areas.

AQUA HOTEL. LANDSCAPE ARUBA

POOL AREA

In the landscape design for the pool area of the Aqua Hotel in Aruba there were a set of wood structures and elements specially design to be the image of the common areas. Among this elements there were a set of six wood cubicles near the jacuzzi area and a structure of wood covers for the restaurant zone. These are hereby presented.

CUBICLES

AQUA HOTEL. LANDSCAPE ARUBA

CUBICLES

The cubicles are wood structures made entirely out of wood to provide sheltered spaces for those in the pool area looking for a little quiet without confining themselves to the confinement of the hotel room. Comformed by a series of wood panels which serves both as structure and enclosure, these cubicles provide a partial sun protection by generating lateral and roof pergolas. The panels are united to a parquet flooring, also made of wood, which lies on concrete pylons.

AQUA HOTEL. LANDSCAPE ARUBA

RESTAURANT

AQUA HOTEL. LANDSCAPE ARUBA

RESTAURANT

The restaurant zone will have a wood pergola roofting in the bar area along with a set of four aditional pergolas which delimitate the restaurant table´s area. These four pergolas are comformed by wood panels of different tones and sizes, creating a plastic composition that connects one roof with the next so when being observed by the pedestrians it marks the route through the pool area. The wood pergolas are buildt as independent pieces to be attached to the suporting structure made aout of

steel. To diminish the number of columns the design proposes a zizag form in the orientation of the beams suporting the four roofs. This Zigzag steel structure is joined to the wood pergolas by tubular steel elements and tensors that allow the roofs to hang from the structure so these can be in direct contact with the people passing by and allow the patterns to be fully appreciated.

SEED CITY

"SEMBRANDO CIUDAD"

CARACAS-VALENCIA , VENEZUELA

This project is part of a program called City Planting led by Enlace Arquitectura, FUDEP, a local NGO dedicated to capacity building in communities, and Citi Foundation of Citicorp. The program focuses on encouraging inhabitants of various slums in Venezuela to recognize the role public space has in fostering safer communities and its importance in terms of increasing social coherence and overall wellbeing by dictating workshops of participatory design with the people from the communities. Over the course of one year we plan a series of activities with the community that are designed to engage all demographic segments of the population, from the elderly to children, women and men alike. The activities are dynamic and often outdoors so that people passing by can also join the group which allows the program to continuously grow in attendance and participation over time The first activities invite neighbors to walk through their community by designing a tour that showcases various places of particular meaning to them. Then we organize a rally with didactic and dynamic activities that allow neighbors to discover various virtues of public space such as its potential to serve for play, to be a moment of rest, a place to congregate etc. These activities allow everyone to recognize which places have the greatest potential and best location to become vibrant public spaces. Finally a Theatre production is put on for everyone to watch, where neighbors personify various components of public space in the actual place they have chosen to transform. This purports to begin the creation of a new collective connotation and image associated with that particular place. Those who participate in turn tell their family and friends about the event and multiply the notion of making that place into something greater and better.

1. The first organized activity we planned with the community, once they learned about the program and agreed to participate, was to invite everyone to walk through their neighborhood in an open TOUR that encouraged participants to identify places of particular meaning to the them. We used models to locate these spaces which help people discover and recognize their surroundings; we also invite children to draw their ideas about what kinds of activities and games they like to play. 2. Then we organize a RALLY with didactic and dynamic activities that allow neighbors to discover the potential of places to serve as public spaces and identify the elements that must be considered

During the tour a model is used to identify spaces

in order to adequately condition it. These activities allow everyone to recognize which places have the greatest potential and best location to become vibrant public spaces. 3. Finally a THREATRE production is put on for everyone to watch, where neighbors personify various components of public space in the actual place they have chosen to transform. Participants in turn tell their family and friends about the event and multiply the notion of making that particular place into a public square or plaza.

CONSTRUCTION MANUALS

Late August 2016, a small public space intervention was made in Las AgĂźitas in one of the courtyards with a budget of $2.000,00. It served as the pilot project for the entire program which is also being implemented in 7 other communities in various cities in Venezuela. Benches, pavers, swing sets, see-saws and canopies can be built using manuals with local and recycled material. Every detail of fabrication is clearly explained with images and indicates varying levels of difficulty which make it possible for everyone to participate and leave their mark on the project. This methodology simplifies tasks into steps that are easy to execute and leave participants with a valuable sense of accomplishment and empowerment regarding the project.

STREET PLAZA

Floor plan of the park

Design of wood bench for the park

One of the projects made during this experience of participatory design is the street plaza in the communitie of Las Aguitas in Valencia, Venezuela. In this slum people made notorious that they didn´t have any place for children to play, nor the little ones or teen agers, also the elder didn´t have a place where they could be aoutside and be protected from the strong sun light characteristic in Valencia city. After months of participatory design activities the project concluded on the restauration of an existing park for children, turning it into a slide park, with different colors and sizes and a series of particulary designed elements to bring life to the park.

Next to the park there is a parking lot currently not used by the neighboors so we decided to turn it into a transformable space to cover multiple needs the communitie has. The space will be protected by a tensed fabric cover and in this resguarded area can function as a street market, an open cinema or a cultural space for communitie´s reunions or events that require a big space.

Image of site today

Recycling collection posts are to be placed in each of the 8 sectors of Santa Cruz

The project proposal consists of converting this area into a formalized public space, a linear boulevard, along the Rio de Paragua Avenue over a length of 120 meters. This intervention is coupled with a Recycling and waste disposal plant located only 100 meters away that has already been fully designed by the Municipality. Funding for this project has been solicited to the European Community International Fund. This will become the new location for waste collection, liberating the space where the open dump currently stands. Given its strategic location at the entrance of this informal settlement, it is most needed for a public transportation stop, a place for meeting and congregating, a place to arrive and be greeted by your community and a place that dissolve barriers and limits between the formal and informal urban fabric. It also includes a series of market stands that local neighbors would be able to rent from the Municipality to sell locally produced goods and produce.

The purpose of the project is to clean and transform this urban sore spot into an agreeable and lively public space that the Santa Cruz community can feel proud of. The renewed order will also help increase the community´s sense of self worth and pride. Since it is located along the edge of the barrio, in contact with the formal urban fabric of the area including multifamily housing and commercial uses, this is an opportunity to integrate both urban conditions and provide a space for congregation that everyone can share and benefit from. The boulevard will give people a proper bus stop, a market, where Santa Cruz inhabitants will have a chance to sell locally produced produce and food, and a landscape with plenty of shade so as to maintain an agreeable temperature and make this a place to frequent and linger.

GRADUATION PROJECT Mi graduaction project was based on a research I did on the impact of participatory design in the development of the slums in Venezuela during my work in the project SEED CITY, "sembrando ciudad". In this investigation I evaluate all the methods used as part of the participatory design, the impact on the people, which ones were productive, which ones were not and how the activities could be improved. Here are the links to the full investigation and visual presentation. They have not yet been translated to english. There are also two videos that show the process of designing these public spaces with the people in the slums.
