CanadaOne lost all credit for the online content that they created causing them to spend a great deal of time and money chasing down copyright offenders and web scrapers.

With Distil Networks, CanadaOne was able to detect the web scrapers and block them from attacking the CanadaOne website and scraping content.

With CanadaOne’s content protected, their website saw an improvement in site performance and a better pagerank resulting in more web visitors.

CanadaOne knows what it takes to win on the Internet. Since 1998, it has been offering professionally created content to Canada’s business community. Its vast library of over 900 original articles is publicly available and this content is the lifeblood of the business. However, the road to success has not always been smooth – CanadaOne has worked tirelessly to survive the .com bomb, The Great Recession, and search engine changes such as Google’s Panda algorithm change. In an effort to protect its position in search results, intellectual property, and operational expenses, CanadaOne has now turned to Distil Networks to defend itself against malicious bots attempting to steal publicly available business content.

the internet. How was CanadaOne compensated for the popularity of this article? It was not – the company was actually penalized by search engines that marked the original version as stolen content. Furthermore, the constant effort by malicious bots to scrape content uses server resources and slows overall performance consuming expensive bandwidth. For CanadaOne, the malicious bots were 20% of all traffic to their site. need protection. The managed nodes will be monitored and maintained 24x7 by the Distil Networks NOC.

The Panda Upset

Bad Bots Firms like CanadaOne work hard to create original content, which ultimately drives visitors and ad revenue. In February of 2011, Google released Panda, a search algorithm modification that attempted to lower the search ranks of thin, low quality sites lacking original content. The well-intentioned change reportedly modified almost 12% of US search results but not without issue. Almost immediately, websites reported that content stolen from their sites was now being ranked higher than their original content in Google’s search results. How did this happen? Automated web scraping technology, “bots”, were used to grab unprotected web content and duplicate it across other websites siphoning away SEO rank and web traffic. With Panda, search giant Google penalized content creators and validated the business model of content theft from web scraping companies that re-post copyrighted material with the hopes of increasing their own ad revenues. “Exactly what is ‘Thinking outside the box’?” is one of CanadaOne’s most popular articles; unfortunately, it is also one of its most stolen – with more than 40 different versions of the article being circulated and played off as original around

80% Human Visitors

CanadaOne suffers from copyright violations, lower position in search results, higher operational costs, and slower page load times… all because of web scrapers. Original content, drives visitors and revenue and must be protected. As important as virus protection and spam checkers, content protection must be a top priority and web companies must take immediate action to protect intellectual property.

The Solution Julie King, CEO of CanadaOne was faced with several options, many of which would have less than positive outcomes:

> Should she change her business model or try to figure out a new way to protect her content? > Should she simply yield to the search giant and pay to have her content listed first? > Should she pursue legal action against infringements of copyright? > Should she hire someone to spend countless hours chasing down content thieves? > Should she spend money on infrastructure to relieve performance problems caused by both real users and by malicious bots?

Ultimately, Julie took action to protect her content and reputation by connecting with Distil Networks. Using our cloud to block malicious bots and web scrapers CanadaOne ensured that only real users were able to access their website, completely filtering out all automated threats. Additionally, Distil accelerates all outgoing requests from 16 global nodes allowing for faster site load times. After reviewing the Distil solution, Julie signed up for a free trial. Almost immediately, CanadaOne started seeing tangible results. The benefits that CanadaOne realized include:

Bot-Free Traffic

Faster Page Load Times

20% of the total traffic that CanadaOne experienced was in reality malicious bots or attacks on their website.

CanadaOne experienced a dramatic improvement in performance with average page response times reduced by 30%.

Improved SEO

Reduced Operational Cost

CanadaOne has seen an increase of 48% in unique visitor traffic after preventing web scrapers from duplicating their content.

CanadaOne saw more than a 70% decrease in requests to its servers and a 42% decrease in bandwidth usage.

Why the Private Cloud? There are many reasons to go private. For instance, some companies have legal compliance issues that cannot be solved in a public cloud. In some cases, customers have very high volumes or they cannot cache dynamic content in the public cloud. In some cases it is simply corporate policy that their operations cannot put any services into the public cloud.

choice to internally route web traffic to the Distil nodes as you need protection. The managed nodes will be monitored and maintained 24x7 by the Distil Networks NOC.

Architecture Options for Distil Networks Distil will assess your traffic and architecture and a network engineer will design a custom private cloud deployment for your environment.

It gives you all the benefits of the Distil service including:

> Distil nodes are deployed in your rack in your datacenter or shared facility.

> Proactive techniques - Distil uses proactive measurements to stop bots on the very first connection so that you do not allow data scraping before malicious bots reach rate limits in your WAF.

> Distil nodes are collocated in the same shared datacenter tied to your infrastructure with cross-connects.

> Unique fingerprinting, not IP addresses, as Bot Identifier Distil uses unique fingerprints to identify bots, not simply relying on IP addresses or user agents to track bots. > HTTP Stream Injections - Distil has proprietary methods to validate real browsers, verify user agents, and detect automation scripts.

How It Works Distil will deploy a managed private node in your facility to protect your web servers. The Distil nodes will sit inline with your infrastructure ensuring all connections to your web servers are protected. Your deployment acts as a private version of our public infrastructure, responding to only your traffic. Incoming connections will resolve to your own IP’s and you will have the

Connectivity and the data stream is maintained by your team behind your firewall. Your Private Cloud will be updated on regular intervals with the latest bot signatures from Distil Network’s public infrastructure. Private cloud analytics and configurations will be managed through the Distil Networks customer portal.

Deployment of Private Cloud Distil Networks or Client will deliver the hardware to the facility for installation. The installation of servers into racks and all remote hands shall be provided by facility operator or client. Once nodes are installed and connectivity is established, the nodes will self register with the Distil Networks cloud. The Distil Networks team will validate the configuration and support a thorough testing process before launch.
