Entrance to the Catacombs I. Úri utca 9., www.labirintus.hu, open daily 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. ••• There is a 10-kilometrelong underground labyrinth under Castle Hill where evidence of human occupants dating back half a million years has been found. The caves were first connected to the Turks for military purposes. In the 1930s an air-raid shelter for 10,000 people was created in the labyrinth by using concrete reinforcements. Today a section of about 1.5 kilometres can be visited. Water always drips in limestone caves and this one is no exception. After a heavy rain, the dripping resembles a shower in some places. The temperature is 14 degrees Celsius and the humidity is about 90 percent. Only a street sign on the wall reminds us of the time during World War Two when thousands of people lived through the siege down here. Some say that the postman even came down to deliver their letters. There is another entrance at Lovas utca 4.
