place is apparently still quite gay, there is an ERÉNYŐR (“guardian of virtue”) who shouts at any guests who get too frisky in public! Rudas fürdő I. Döbrentei tér 9., www.rudasfurdo.hu. This bath house has a swimming pool, rooftop sunbathing terrace, and a 400 year-old Turkish steam bath. There is a mixed crowd, including gays, but there are also non-gay sportsmen who get easily offended. Maximum discretion is required, this is no longer a par excellence gay establishment. Gellért fürdő and Széchenyi fürdő See page 181 and page 236 for contact information. These non-gay establishments have outdoor swimming pools and steam baths, the latter are popular with gays. Many tourists still believe they can make gay acquaintances there, but probably not true. Palatinus XIII. 1138 Margitsziget, open May 1 to end of August. The Palatinus open-air swimming pool has a nudist sun terrace which is frequented almost only by gays.

Cruising Areas Dunakorzó The Pest side of the Danube embankment between the Marriott Hotel and the Erzsébet híd is frequented by many hustlers, some from the neighbouring countries, who send their earnings home to support their wives and children. Park on the riverside This park on the Buda side of Margit híd is unsafe at night, but it is quite busy after dusk until midnight in good weather.

Gay Budapest, Quarter to Seven The Post Office Clerk is looking at his non-quartz-driven watch: another 15 long minutes until they close. The Scholar is struggling with an electric drill: is there a reinforced concrete pillar behind this bathroom wall? The Wickedest Pen in Town is browsing an iconoclastic theatre quarterly, edited by one of his protégés. The Doctor is reviewing the photo-CD of his holiday – a medium he is overwhelmed with. The Actor is putting a substantial amount of makeup on his face: tonight he has to double his actual age. The Civil Servant is preparing some leftover dinner for his three unbecoming daughters, his almost only consolation in life. The Newsletter Publisher has just read the proofs of the obituary of William Burroughs. The Music Teacher is pouring some beer into a glass of “secondary cleanliness” in his 8th storey prefab flat in the outskirts of workingclass Pest. They are all expecting important phone calls – from close friends. And they are all intrigued: to march or not to march at the first ever Gay Pride Parade. Twilight is slowly falling on a big town, somewhat satia ted with the summer.
