It cost about 1.5 million euros, which was almost exclusively public money. The father of the idea promised world attention for the wheel turning ceremony, which he said would be shown on every conceivable TV station, which is something yet to happen.

ING Building associates in 1999, it was finally unveiled on May 1, 2004 when Hungary joined the European Union. According to its initiator, János Herner (a publisher and historian), “it does not measure, rather represents time.” The eight metre-high, 2.5 metre-wide, 60 ton granite wheel contains an ingeniously designed hourglass in which all of the identical artificial quartz globes (4.5 cubic meters in all) fall in exactly one year. Of course, this could not be left to the blind forces of nature, so a computer controls the process (when it is not out of service). The computer is needed to

To many people it is the symbol of the new Budapest. Before ING (the Dutch bank and insurance company) moved here, it was housed at Andrássy út 9. in a superbly converted late 19th century building with a brand new wing on Paulay Ede utca. We passed it earlier on this walk.
