My master thesis, M.A.D. IN/ARCH awarded, is about a new strategy of design and it’s execution through many algorithms on a virtual world. It was based on evaluating analytically different combinations of agents and physical forces for chosing the best one to create a new shape which is functional to the square. After that we proposed a suitably designed object and simulated it’s behavor on a real data contest (e.g. height of the umbrella respond to web impact, color of light to the noise under them) http://vimeo.com/77637782 - FLOWERPOT -

2° place award for an idea competition organized from CHwB in Kosovo. The request was to connect 3 main historical sites of the city of Vushtrri with each other and to better integrate them in the citizens life. My proposal was about an interactive game of lights made by a web platforme open to everybody and some colorfull flowerpots around each historical site. This low-impact and funny installation has also the function of a container of the region’s flora, like a botanical garden, with it’s archeological history engraved around. Interactive

3d printing of a small model like this, 100x40x20mm, is just one of the design steps during the research of a new shape. In this case I wanted to better understand the statics of this shape and the distribution of it’s pannels. The smaller is the model and the cheaper it will be to print, but at the same time it needs a way to show more info with less detailes. By considering the specific 3d printing machine limits, I developed an algorithm that enhances the shape through it’s shadows and underlines the pannel dimensions with pyramids, - ISLAMIC PATTERN -

Vinyl Cutter KNK is a laser controlled machine that I used to cut 2 pannels of 70x50cm and produce so 120 elements that after assembling with a stapler took this shape. It is based on the 3d model printed before, x7 bigger and enriched by an Islamic Pattern. In fact it is the result of a longer experiment where the shape is generated from an algorithm in Grasshopper and the stars+esagons of the 3d virtual model are animated through a Photoresistor (sensor of light) and the Arduino board linked to the pc. ALGORITHMIC DESIGN & BIO-MORPHOLOGIES is a workshop about Bio-mimicry hold by Marcella del Signore, focused on the study of systems of parametric growth and evolution, such as L-systems, cellular automata, self-organisation and other genetic algorithms. The concept of nature and evolutionary systems was developed through dynamic simulations using Maya. My exercise was about this specific skin that takes its cue from the strawberry fruit surface. http://vimeo.com/68444407 - 3DRUMS -

MATERIAL SYSTEM & GENERATIVE DESIGN was hold by Salvator J. Liotta and Yuta Ito, both architects coming from Kengo Kuma Lab. The workshop focused on the consequences of applying generative design to the physical reality of construction. It began with an element, similar to a seed that generated a structure and produced a realistic final architectural result. In my case the seed was a japanese icon called Doramu (drum), that generated a structure transparent from some angles of view. Workshops

2.Structure of beams, thinner near the borders and thicker in the center.

3.Matrix of analysis data on the groundfloor [265pannels x 265tiles]. PERFORMATIVE SKIN LAB - FORM FOLLOWS ENERGY FLOWS was a workshop hold by Giovanni Betti, Associate Partner at FOSTER and member of their Specialist Modelling Group, during which I elaborated a new tool for the Daylight Analysis. It is a way to show how many rays (different color and length of the cones) can pass through each part of a variable thickness structure, measured on the floor but also telling through which holes are coming from (cones direction).

According to these analysis I was able to say that, for that particular structure, the light passing through it’s center is distributed on the ground homogeneously and more we consider holes near the border more the light is distributed substantially to the areas below (yellow concentrated in the bushes around and pointing to the area directly over them). The skin proposed was to distribute the light more homogeneously and had a variable density of obstruction elements, in agreement with the map of the point 3. Workshops

A complex of services and residences in a small area on the shores of Neuchatel Lake, Switzerland. This was required for a competition in which I participated as an intern with the office of Vittorio Grassi. While my task was to think about the external aspect, after making a research on various shapes and methods of modeling, we decided with all the team to represent a structure similar to the salt crystals. To achieve this goal we played with tilted facades and glasses with different translucency. - PONTE NUOVO -

With FMAU team we proposed for Future magazine competition a kind of modern Ponte del Rialto. Inside the project a shopping mall, cinemas and museums in a border area between the ancient and the modern in the largest city of China, Chongqing. The outside light is filtered through Water tanks placed as skylights. While the reliefs on the walls recall the network of streams and rivers that flow down from the mountains. And the water that falls among these reliefs gives rise to a spontaneous green. International Competitions

Labastide was a district of Limoges (France) in a strong social decay that entered in the 2012 inside the Project Improvement of the Quality of Services. Funded by the government with â‚Ź 1,600,000 VAT the project was commissioned to FMAU, where, in a small part during my internship, I had the possibility to worke on it. - BLANCHE -

The project of FMAU for the Swiss section of the 2011 Europan competition is about the transformation of a square in Aigle. The way to present the project graphically was linked to the name and to it’s main concept of White, an elegant way very appreciated from the jury that awarded them the first place. My task was to redo the graphical job of the project for an easily approach by also the local population.

A personal experiment in order to build prototypes of any double curvature surfaces with cardboard ribbons or any other material enough flexible in one single direction. Starting from any input surface the generative algorithm will print ribbons on the right length by also indicating in each one the junction points with the others. - MASTERPLAN SAPPADA -

Working for Vittorio Grassi on a masterplan competition I had the task of modeling all the buildings like a sports palace, hotel, spa and also dwellings. It was requested to have a regular shape outside, made of planar surfaces, and a smother one inside made of double curvature surfaces. We choose to build it with variable cross-section wooden beams because of many constructive and environmental reasons. I managed to do that thanks to an algorithm specially designed. Algorithms

Tools for the international competition at Neuchatel Lake, inside the team of V. Grassi: Two algorithms to control the building facades - The first ensures that by changing the position of the external vertices the faces continue to remain planar (a 4 vertices face is not allways planar). The second one distributes randomly three types of glasses but with the possibility to decide the percentage of each type for the entire building. - TENSEGRITY -

During the internship in Luxembourg, not yet knowing the generative algorithms, I developed a method of parametrical drawing on Autocad, where the input is not a general curved surface but only the mathematical function of any surface, if we know it. I created some Excel sheets that automatically generate a code to copy and paste in the command bar of Autocad for drawing the stucture of beams and cables adapted to the input function. The structure above is the 2V Expander taken from RenÊ Motro’s tensegrity strucures. Algorithms

- BAITA BOGE -

While I spent 2 weeks of holidays on my own land among the the Albanian Alps I built this wooden mountain hut. The foundations are made of burned pine logs (I burned them recycling used machines oil) whereas the rest of the structure is designed to be strong and lightweight at the same time.
