AB O UT TH E ARTIST P e r r y i s o n e o f B r i t a i n ’s m o s t celebrated living artists known for his sharp-witted social commentary and modern revisions of tradtional mediums such as tapestry and p o t t e r y. H e t o u c h e s o n m a n y t h e m e s including the social class system, identity and culture. G r a y s o n ’s w o r k e x p l o r e s s u b j e c t s inspired by his childhood and experience as a transvestite growing up in Essex. This unique upbringing provided the input for his distinct style and clever treatment of subject and medium. THE LIFE OF JULIE COPE Julie Cope is a fictional character created by Grayson Perry – an Essex everywoman whose story he has told through his printed graphics. T h e y i l l u s t r a t e t h e k e y e v e n t s i n t h e h e r o i n e ’s j o u r n e y f r o m h e r b i r t h during the Canvey Island floods of 1953 to her untimely death in a tragic accident on a Colchester street. These artworks represent, in P e r r y ’s w o r d s , ‘ t h e t r i a l s , t r i b u l a t i o n s , c e l e b r a t i o n s a n d m i s t a k e s o f an average life’. T h e n a r r a t i v e o r i g i n a t e d i n P e r r y ’s A H o u s e f o r E s s e x ( 2 0 1 2 – 1 5 ) – h i s m o s t a m b i t i o u s p r o j e c t t o d a t e . D e s i g n e d b y P e r r y w i t h FAT architects for Living Architecture, and located on the Stour Estuary at Wrabness, this residential secular chapel is dedicated to Julie C o p e a n d s e r v e s a s t h e a r t i s t ’s t r i b u t e t o t h e p e o p l e w i t h w h o m h e grew up. F r o m a f l o o d e d i s l a n d t o a c o n c r e t e c i t y, d i s c o v e r J u l i e ’s c h i l d h o o d , teenage years and first marriage to Dave. Then travelling further North, follow Julie as she takes control and builds a new life for herself with second husband, Rob.

P e r r y ’s a r t w o r k i s a l a r g e p r i n t o f a n a n i m a l t h a t i s h a l f b u l l , h a l f b e a r. I t w a s i n s p i r e d b y t h e p h r a s e “ a n i m a l s p i r i t ” – w h i c h h e s a y s i s a euphemism for the exuberant “non-rational” thinking that was blamed for the 2008 financial crash. Many bankers he spoke to described this period as an aberration, rather than the intrinsic masculine culture of the financial world.

A vocal advocate of therapy and analysis, in the Map of Nowhere Perry explores his own belief system; his opinions contend with those he finds crowding around h i m i n w i d e r s o c i e t y. T h e p r i n t ’s g r a n d p r o p o r t i o n s e n c o m p a s s t h e a r t i s t ’s t a s t e f o r n i g g l i n g d e t a i l . A M AP O F DAYS “Well, I've done several other maps. I like maps. So when I was p l a n n i n g t h e s h o w a t t h e N a t i o n a l P o r t r a i t G a l l e r y, a s w e l l a s t h e portraits of the people that are in the TV series, I wanted to do a s e l f - p o r t r a i t a s w e l l . S o I s o u g h t a m e t a p h o r. I w a n t e d t o m a k e i t more of a musing on the nature of identity and the self. I thought the walled city was a good metaphor – the wall, I suppose, can r o u g h l y b e i n t e r p r e t e d a s y o u r s k i n . B u t l i k e a n y c i t y, i t ' s d e p e n d e n t on the landscape it sits in as well. T h a t i s t h e n a t u r e o f t h e s e l f – o u r i d e n t i t y o n l y w o r k s i n c o m p a n y. I t ’s c o - c r e a t e d b y o t h e r p e o p l e a s m u c h a s o u r s e l v e s , s o t h a t w a s the idea behind it. And it's a nice vehicle for jotting down things as t h e y c o m e i n t o m y h e a d , p r a c t i c a l l y. T h a t ' s h o w I w o r k , o n t h e whole – I don’t overly plan my pieces because I want them to have a r a n d o m a u t h e n t i c i t y, I s u p p o s e . ” - G r a y s o n P e r r y
