THE 2019 CTHS YEARLING SALES

ABOUT THE CANADIAN THOROUGHBRED HORSE SOCIETY The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS) was incorporated in 1906 under the federal Live Stock Pedigree Act (presently called the Animal Pedigree Act – 1988) as a National Breed Organization to assist breeders of Thoroughbred horses in Canada. Located in Toronto, the National Office determines the requirements for Canadian-Bred status of foals, maintains the Breeder membership roster for Canada, compiles statistics and represents Canadian Thoroughbred Breeders nationally and internationally.

In 1976, provincial divisions were established in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan. The Divisions assist Breeders with provincial bonus and incentive programs, operate auctions, and provide other services to members. Currently Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario have offices.

2019 saw the 160th running of the Queen’s Plate, 84th running of the Prince of Wales at Fort Erie, Canada’s oldest Racetrack, and the 60th running of the Breeders Stakes, completing the Canadian Triple Crown. The last horse to complete the feat in Canada was Wando in 2003. The Canadian Triple Tiara inaugurated in 1999 and is for 3 year-old-fillies, consists of the Woodbine Oaks, Bison City Stakes & Wonder Where Stakes, has only been captured once. In 2007, Sealy Hill, became the first filly to capture all three races.

Canada celebrated its 150th Birthday on July 1st, 2017, a great milestone marking our Confederation. One hundred years before that, on July 1st, 1767, the first recorded horse race in Canada took place on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City.

The Canadian Triple Crown and Tiara are restricted to Canadian-Breds. Many of the CTHS Sales graduates go on to make a name for themselves, such as Heart to Heart, Pink Lloyd, Escape Clause, Lexi Lou, C U at Eau Clair and many more.

“The horse race for a purse of forty dollars was held on Wednesday, first of the month, on the Hill of Abraham. It was easily won by Captain Prescott’s mare Modesty, much to the discomfiture of those who, purporting to know about such things, had wagered against her and thereby parted from their money.”

Who will the next Champion be? You could own a piece of History! Come visit one of the upcoming CTHS Sales!

This program reimbursed up to 50% of the Purchase Price of a Pregnant Mare, bought at specific recognized public auctions in the United States. The mares had to foal in Ontario and be bred back to a registered Ontario Sire. Both foals produced must be sold at a recognized CTHS Ontario Sale or must make 2 starts in the Province of Ontario to qualify for the Mare Program, thus supporting Commercial Breeders as well as “Breed To Race” Stakeholders. CTHS BRITISH COLUMBIA YEARLING & MIXED SALE Tuesday, September 10, 2019 - 3pm (with preview and yearling parade Monday, September 9)

Thunderbird Show Park, Langley, British Columbia If a yearling sale’s best advertising comes through its graduates, then potential purchasers should be beating a path to the CTHS Yearling and Mixed Sales at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, British Columbia, on September 10. After all, this year’s Canadian Derby winner Explode (Trappe Shot) passed through the ring in 2017, and there is once again an impressive lineup of leading North American sires represented among the 90-strong catalogue. In addition to the 20 plus yearlings by Kentuckybased stallions, there are some 60 youngsters bred locally in British Columbia, all of whom qualify for up to $1,500 in rebates – as long as the horse remains in BC for its two-year-old career.

Last season’s sale was topped by a son of leading freshman sire Tapiture and, this year, the popular young stallion has a half-sister to no less than nine winners offered by agent Jamie Demetrick.

Included among the locally bred yearlings are siblings to this season’s leading Hastings’ juveniles, At Attention and Infinite Patience. Peter Redekop’s At Attention has a half-brother by Bakken consigned by Wild Rose Farm, while William DeCoursey’s sensational filly, Infinite Patience, has a half-sister by leading BC sire Second in Command offered by Red Rock Farm.

With five yearlings by leading regional sire Harbor the Gold, as well as colts and fillies catalogued by the likes of Afleet Alex, Animal Kingdom, Fed Biz, Fort Larned, Macleans Music, Midshipman, Oxbow, Palace Malice, Stay Thirsty, The Factor and Wicked Strong, this year’s sale looks certain to attract plenty of potential clients from throughout the region and beyond.

The 2019 sale will also be a first opportunity to see BC-bred yearlings by Value Plus, a G1-placed son of Unbridled’s Song, who has already sired a G1 winner in Long On Value.

Potential purchasers should also note that all horses will be available for inspection the day prior to the sale (September 9), when there will also be a parade of yearlings in the afternoon.
