The Jockey Club of Canada Welcomes You to the 47th Annual Sovereign Awards Ceremony

The Sovereign Award Trophy

On behalf of Chief Steward, R. Glenn Sikura and the Jockey Club of Canada Board of Stewards, we would like to congratulate all of the finalists and winners this evening.

His major racecourse accomplishment was his 20-length victory in the Ascot Gold Cup. He annihilated the field with such ease that his jockey was unable to pull him up after the 2 1/2 mile test. Highly regarded as a racehorse, it was as a stallion that St. Simon gained everlasting international fame. The son of Galopin – St. Angels, by King Tom, headed the list of winners nine times and the maternal grandsire list on six occasions, records that have never been equaled. St. Simon, or one of his three sons, led the winners’ sire list sixteen times between 1890 and 1913. The Sovereign Award Trophy is a bronze which was sculpted by local carver and award winning sculptor, the late Siegfried Puchta, a native of Germany who immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1953.

The Master Trophy The Master Sovereign Award Trophy is a permanent fixture on display in the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame located at the west entrance of Woodbine Racetrack. The Trophy is a symbol of the outstanding achievements of all Sovereign Award recipients from the past 47 years. Affixed on the base of the Master Trophy are the names of the Horse of Year recipients as well as the recipients of the E.P. Taylor Awards of Merit (formerly the Man of the Year Award).

Only one Sovereign Award Trophy is to be presented to an individual or partnership in his or her lifetime. Any subsequent awards are to be noted by the addition of a Gold Sovereign Coin and a brass plate which are intended to be affixed to the individual’s or partnership’s original trophy. Individual breeders or partnership breeders of a Sovereign Award winning horse will only receive one trophy in his or her lifetime. Breeders or breeding partnerships of subsequent award winners will receive a brass plate only which is intended to be affixed to the individual breeder or partnership breeder’s original trophy. Only one Gold Sovereign or Trophy is to be awarded in any single year for the accomplishments of a horse, individual, or partnership. If a horse, individual or partnership is awarded in more than one category this is to be noted on individual brass plates intended to be affixed to the base of one trophy.

Welcome to the 47th Sovereign Awards

We would like to say a special thank you to our dedicated Sponsors and Advertisers for continuing to support the Sovereign Awards.

The Sovereign Award Trophy is a replica of St. Simon (1881-1908). St. Simon raced at age two and three and was undefeated in 10 starts.

A STAR IN THE MAKING At Adena Springs we are truly honoured to play our part in Canadian racing and breeding. We’re here to support you in your quest for the ultimate accolade in Canadian racing – a Sovereign Award. We truly believe that AMERICAN GURU will one day be the sire of a Sovereign Award winner. He’s a young stallion with his first foals on the ground this spring. Breed to him and you’ll be tapping into the famed Lyphard’s Delta family. A grandson of Unbridled out of a daughter of Mineshaft, AMERICAN GURU is bred along similar lines to Royal Delta. Remember that his dam (Camargue) is a three-quarter-sister to: • INDY FIVE HUNDRED – dam of MAGNY COURS – in 2021 - 3rd in the Dubai World Cup (Gp.1) and winner of a Gp.3 and Listed, placed in a Gp.2. • Magical Crown – dam of GOOD EFFORT – a 3x stakes winner and placed in Gp.3 races on dirt and synthetic in 2021 and this year, finished 2nd in the Gp.3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint. • DELTA PRINCESS (dam of CROWN QUEEN, DELTA PRINCE, ROYAL DELTA). • And a half-sister to BIONDETTI. AMERICAN GURU is an excellent out cross for the NORTHERN DANCER line.

Standing at just C$3000 he represents tremendous value. NOMINATION INQUIRIES TO: DERMOT A. CARTY – DIRECTOR OF SALES EMAIL: DCARTY@STRONACHINTERNATIONAL.COM ONTARIO TEL: (416) 518-1449

HAYLEY MORRISON New Races, New Faces: How I Fell for The Fort Published: November 12, 2021 on CanadianThoroughbred.com A rolling stone by nature, I found myself embracing a new job role in the horse racing industry this year. This new venture took me beyond Toronto’s cement jungle to the historic border oval of Fort Erie Race Track in Fort Erie, Ontario. A contract role as the Fort’s media and communications manager saw me head south on the QEW to a place surrounded by serene landscape and reminiscent of a Hallmark movie that plays on repeat as the holiday season approaches. A journalist by trade, social media is in my wheelhouse. Yet, one must keep in mind that media management is a continuously changing role, and as technology flourishes into new dimensions, the social media landscape has also dispersed into a subset of platforms. Various platforms where different audiences devour information on the news, entertainment, sports and find a general escape from a reality that has been engulfed by the COVID-19 pandemic...

JENNIFER MORRISON Run With a Mighty Heart Novel Published: December 17, 2021 Chapter 1: Pandemic The spring of 2020 was just thirty-six hours old when trainer Josie Carroll watched Mighty Heart race erratically around the Fair Grounds racecourse in a maiden turf race on Louisiana Derby day, his head turned awkwardly as he tried to compensate for his missing left eye. It was the biggest afternoon of the Fair Grounds meeting, a New Orleans track that runs from December through March and is a popular spot for Canadian horsepeople to prepare their horses for races in their home country. Spring’s arrival in the sport of Thoroughbred racing is a magical time. The days begin to stretch out, trees slowly fill out with leaves of green, and the hibernating racetracks of the north stir from their long winter’s rest. Many racehorses are also back from a few months of romping in the snow, or if their owners have deeper pockets, time off in the sunshine at farms further south. Dreams of a winning horse in the new year, perhaps the ‘big horse,’ bubble over for every owner, trainer, jockey, and groom...

SUSAN STAFFORD-POOLEY The View (and Some Tales) from the Starting Gate Published: September 22, 2021 on CanadianThoroughbred.com Every time the starting gates spring open and the horses leap from the stalls to charge down the track, you have Clay Puett to thank. Born in 1899, the Texan invented the closed electric starting gate which is now used at all major Thoroughbred race tracks around the world in some form or another. And it was actually right here in Canada at Exhibition Park Race Track in Vancouver, BC where Puett’s invention made its debut on July 1, 1939. Prior to Puett’s starting gate a number of mostly unsuccessful techniques were used. In the mid19th century a starter would stand beside the horses and jockeys, drop his flag to signal the start, while his assistant 100 yards down the track had a second flag to mark a false start. Later, racehorses were routinely sent off from behind spring-loaded ropes, wires or cloth or webbed barriers which would fly upward. This also proved to be a recipe for disaster (and more false starts), leading to many injuries and other mayhem. In one incident at the 1924 Kentucky Derby...

CURTIS STOCK Real Grace’s Winning Ways an Inspiration for Brown to Keep Fighting Terminal Diagnosis Published: May 20, 2021 on TheHorses.com The news arrived black. Hard as coal and as unexpected as a knock on the door at two in the morning. Early last September Thoroughbred trainer Shelley Brown had gone to Winnipeg’s Grace Hospital because of a piercing pain in her shoulder that hadn’t let her sleep in three days. “I thought maybe I had torn something,” she said after one of the horses she trains had knocked her into a stall wall. Maybe a rotator cuff injury. Something along those lines.” Routinely, X-rays were ordered which Brown felt were a waste of time. “I knew my shoulder wasn’t broken. I was convinced it was a soft tissue injury which the X-rays wouldn’t detect. I almost said forget it; I’m going home.” The X-rays, however, revealed something much more sinister than a shoulder issue: a baseball sized mass and a copious amount of fluid in her left lung. Not sure exactly what the mass was, Brown was quickly transported by ambulance to the Health Science Centre where, immediately, a CT scan was performed...

DENZIL FONSECA

sponsored by OLG

Outstanding Groom

Growing up in Jamaica, Denzil Fonseca was introduced to horse racing by his grandfather and an uncle. By the time he was a teenager, he was working as a groom and an exercise rider in his home country for trainer E.L. Lym. When Denzil followed his mentor, Mr. Lym, to Ontario as a young adult, little did he know he would one day be acknowledged for his tremendous horsemanship at the Sovereign Awards. The Jockey Club of Canada is proud to present Denzil Fonseca with the 2021 Outstanding Groom Award, sponsored by OLG. This year marks Denzil’s 40th year working on the Woodbine backstretch. For the past 14 years he has been a groom for trainer Mike Doyle. Denzil has worked for many accomplished horsepeople in Ontario including trainers John Charalambous, Cliff Hopmans, Jr. and Deborah England. He groomed many top horses for England. “I learned a lot working for Deborah,” said Denzil. “It was a big part of my life and we had so many good horses.” Among the equine stars who flourished for Denzil and England were Complete Endeavor, Voodoo and Bold ‘n Flashy. In recent years, Denzil has been the groom for many top horses from the Mike Doyle barn. Most notable of these was Holy Helena, a strong filly who came to Ontario for a stint in the summer of 2017 and won the Woodbine Oaks and Queen’s Plate for Stronach Stables. One of Denzil’s favourite horses, however, was not a stakes star but claiming horse Walkabout Creek, owned by Doyle. “I love him and just had a great relationship with him. He had so many physical issues and it was a while before he even got to the races. He won first time out and that was a big highlight.” Denzil is dedicated, hard-working and extremely diligent while making sure that each of the horses in his care are his number one priority. When he is not spending long hours at the track he is kept busy at home with five women in his life, his daughter Donna Lee and her four girls. “I am so happy to be recognized by the Jockey Club,” said Denzil. “I love horses and my job and I have a great respect for Mr. Doyle and his team.”

IVAN DALOS

E.P. Taylor Award of Merit

From the moment he claimed his first racehorse, Ivan Dalos wanted to learn everything he could about Thoroughbred racing and breeding which piqued an obsession that led Ivan to build one of Canada’s most successful Thoroughbred breeding operations. This evening, Ivan is honoured by the Jockey Club of Canada with the E.P. Taylor Award of Merit for his contributions to Canadian horse racing and breeding industries. Ivan came to Canada from Hungary around the same time E.P. Taylor opened Woodbine racetrack in 1956 and put together a successful flooring and construction business. Once the horse racing bug took hold it did not take long for one of the first horses bred by Ivan to make news on an international stage. Victory Gallop, a son of Cryptoclearance and the first foal of his mare Victorious Lil, spoiled Real Quiet’s bid for the Triple Crown when he beat him a nose in the 1998 Belmont Stakes (G1). Ivan immersed himself in pedigrees, seeking that perfect ‘nick’. A broodmare band that numbered a handful is now more than three dozen, many of which are a part of several generations of Tall Oaks breeding. From his ‘Ami’ line, started by his stakes placed filly Secret Ami has come champion Amis Gizmo, now one of three stallions for Ivan standing in Ontario and champion Ami’s Mesa, his brilliant sprinting mare who was second by a nose in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1). Two mares from that breeding line, Galloping Ami and Victorious Ami, won consecutive Sovereign Awards for Outstanding Broodmare for Ivan in 2016 and 2017. The mare that produced the most accomplished horse bred by Ivan to this point, In Return, is the dam of Grade 1 winner Channel Maker, the Eclipse Award winner for Champion American Turf Male in 2020 and a career earner of over $3.3 million. In Return also produced Grade 1 winner Johnny Bear and she completed an Outstanding Broodmare Sovereign Award hat trick for Ivan in 2018. Tall Oaks won its first Sovereign for Outstanding Breeder in 2018 and doubled up in 2020. Ivan’s top colt Avie’s Flatter is a finalist this evening for Champion Male Turf horse and Male Sprinter, along with his dam Avie’s Empire (Outstanding Broodmare).

A dedicated family man Ivan enjoys sharing the racing experiences with his wife Irene and his three daughters, one of whom, Colleen, has moved into a lead role in the racing and breeding operation and is also a director on the Ontario board of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society. “I started Tall Oaks for my family,” said Ivan. “I try to breed every horse to the best of my ability.” Congratulations Ivan Dalos!

Progeny earnings $1,979,672

Avie’s Empire was bred by Sovereign Award winning breeder Ivan Dalos under his stable name, Tall Oaks Farm. A daughter of Grade 1 winner Fly for Avie, who raced for Dalos, Avie’s Empire was bought back from the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale for $230,000. While she never made the races, Avie’s Empire has been a gem in the breeding shed as her first three foals to race include a Champion, black-type winner and a graded black-type placed runner. Avie’s Empire’s son Avie’s Flatter (Flatter), the Champion 2-YearOld of 2018, was a double, graded winner in 2021 taking the Grade 2 Nearctic Stakes and Grade 2 Connaught Cup Stakes. Raced by Dalos and trained by Josie Carroll, Avie’s Flatter is a double Sovereign Award finalist this evening. Avie’s Empire is also the dam of 2018 Wonder Where Stakes winner Avie’s Mineshaft (Mineshaft) and Avie’s Mesa (Sky Mesa), who was second in the Grade 3 Singspiel Stakes. Avie’s Empire has a 2022 foal by Tapit.

A finalist for Outstanding Broodmare in 2020, the late Include Katherine was a remarkable producer for her Ontario breeder Dom Romeo, owner of Terra Farms. A third-generation mare from the Romeo family’s superb breeding program, Include Katherine, who was placed in a three-race career, has had nine winning foals from nine starters. Her 2016 offspring, Amalfi Coast (Tapizar), has been one of Canada’s top distaffers in the last two years and in 2021 she won the Grade 2 Royal North Stakes and Grade 3 Ontario Fashion Stakes. Amalfi Coast is a three-time Sovereign Award finalist this evening. Include Katherine is also the dam of stakes winner Auntie Katherine, multiple graded blacktype placed Why Katherine, graded blacktype placed Afleet Katherine and stakes placed Chris’ Brew. Include Katherine’s final foal is a 2-year-old by Midnight Lute foaled in Arkansas.

Progeny earnings $1,440,618 Chiefswood Stables’ Sunday Affair was represented in 2021 by her 3-year-old son Weyburn (Pioneerof the Nile), the exciting winner of the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack for the Chiefswood team of Robert and Mark Krembil. It is no surprise that Sunday Affair has had a great deal of success as a broodmare as she is an impeccably bred daughter of the great A.P. Indy and she was bought for $800,000 as a yearling in 2008. Sunday Affair did not make it to the races but her first foal, Nipigon, was blacktype placed three times and he earned over $317,000. The mare’s 2014 foal, Yorkton, by Speightstown, was a multiple graded blacktype winner and a finalist for Champion Sprinter in 2018 and 2019. Weyburn, who has earned over $350,000, is in training in New York with James Jerkens. Sunday Affair has a 3-year-old by Curlin named Indy Champagne and was bred this spring to American Pharoah.

Frank Stronach and his powerful Adena Springs have won this category 12 times in Sovereign Award history. Adena Springs-bred horses, foaled at the Aurora, Ontario farm made their presence felt once again during the 2021 racing season. There were 31 Adena-bred winners from 66 starters collectively earning over $2.3 million. Topping the list of performers was Stronach Stables’ own gelding Silent Poet, who won the Grade 1 Highlander Stakes for trainer Nick Gonzalez. The son of the Adena Springs stallion Silent Name (Jpn) is a finalist for Champion Male Turf Horse this evening. Another star bred by Adena Springs was the 2-year-old filly Moira, who won the prestigious Princess Elizabeth Stakes in her career debut for X-Men Racing, Madaket Stables and SF Racing. The Ghostzapper filly is a finalist this evening. Other top runners of 2021 bred by Adena include Riptide Rock, who came within a head of winning the Queen’s Plate and also finished second in the Breeders’ Stakes. Malibu Mambo was third in the Grade 3 Dominion Day and Lois Len and Whatswrongwithyou were both stakes placed.

More than half a century since Sam-Son Farm was founded by the late Ernie Samuel, the iconic Canadian farm remains at the top of the charts of leading breeders. Sam-Son has been awarded the Outstanding Breeder trophy 10 times, most recently in 2019. Horses foaled on the Milton, Ontario farm earned over $2.6 million in 2021 and there were 31 winners from 52 starters. The majority of the nine Sam-Son bred black-type horses had success south of the border. Say the Word, the 2020 Champion Turf Male in Canada, won the Grade 2 Hollywood Turf Cup at Del Mar and Grade 2 Elkhorn Stakes at Keeneland for Sam-Son and co-owners Agave Racing. The son of More Than Ready was also second in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile. The exciting Messier, a 2-year-old colt by Empire Maker, won the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar for an American ownership group and Rideforthecause and Curlin’s Catch were other U.S. Stakes winners bred by Sam-Son. At Woodbine, the farm’s own gelding Tio Magico won the Queenston Stakes.

Ivan Dalos and his Tall Oaks Farm has won the Outstanding Breeder Award twice in the last three years and Ivan is honoured with the E.P. Taylor Award of Merit this evening. The Tall Oaks-bred runners in 2021 included 21 winners earning over $2.1 million. Avie’s Flatter is a finalist for Champion Male Turf and Male Sprinter this evening. Three-year-olds bred by Tall Oaks made an impact in the Canadian Triple Crown with Harlan Estate finishing second in the Prince of Wales Stakes and H C Holiday landing a close third in the Queen’s Plate. One of the most accomplished horses bred by Ivan Dalos, the 2020 Eclipse Award Champion Turf Male Channel Maker, finished second in the $1 million Neom Turf Cup in Saudi Arabia early in 2021 and his halfsister Court Return was also graded stakes placed last season.

Michael David embarked on his career in the summer of 2021 and it was no surprise he was soon riding into the winner’s circle. Michael guided 19 to 1 Diamondsinhereyes to a frontrunning victory at Fort Erie on August 2, his eighth career mount. He promptly won again three races later on Seal Team Two. Michael continues his family tree filled with accomplished riders. His great uncle is Hall of Fame jockey Ron Turcotte, of Secretariat fame, and his father Daniel David is a career winner of over 1,200 races and was one of Ontario’s most popular riders. Michael, who hails from Peterborough, ON, credits one of his early riding instructors, Jane Allen, for teaching him horsemanship. The 28-year-old won 12 races in his first four months of his riding career.

A winner of the 2020 Sovereign Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey, Mauricio Malvaez is seeking to become the ninth young rider to win back-to-back apprentice honours. The Edmonton, Alberta born jockey switched over to riding racehorses in 2019 after a promising boxing career. The son of jockey Marcos Malvaez had his first full season of riding in 2020 in Alberta and rode Real Grace to a big win in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby. Mauricio bettered his 2020 totals in 2021 riding 19 winners at Century Mile, including Canadian Juvenile Stakes winner Asyoubelieve. He then moved his tack to Woodbine Racetrack in mid-September. Mauricio won with his fourth mount at the Toronto track and added eight more to bring his 2021 total to 28 wins, leading all apprentice riders in Canada.

Edgar was a finalist for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in Canada in 2020 and returns as a nominee in 2021. Following a four-month campaign at Century Mile in Alberta he improved his win total from the previous year. Edgar, the son of successful jockey Rafael Sr. and a graduate of jockey school at home in Mexico City, joined his older brother Rafael at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg in 2020 where he rode his first full season as an apprentice. Quickly becoming popular among the horsepeople with two stakes victories, Edgar moved his tack to Century Mile in 2021. In a shortened season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Edgar won 12 races from 116 mounts and placed in 23 others.

Rafael Hernandez won his first Sovereign Award as Canada’s Outstanding Jockey in 2020 and seeks a repeat after another stellar season in the saddle in 2021. Rafael rode the winners of 17 stakes races among his 85 wins in Canada and his horses earned just over $4 million. This was the sixth season for the Puerto Rican-born jockey riding full time at Woodbine and among his top horses in 2021 was the great sprinter Pink Lloyd. Rafael and the multiple champion won a pair of graded stakes races before the gelding was retired at the age of nine. Rafael was also the partner for top 2-year-olds and 2021 Sovereign Award finalists God of Love, winner of the Grade 3 Grey Stakes and the Cup and Saucer Stakes and Mrs. Barbara, who took the Grade 3 Mazarine Stakes. Kazushi’s eight stakes wins included a win in the Grade 3 Ontario Derby aboard Gary Barber’s Frosted Over, a finalist for Champion Three-YearOld Male this evening. He also won the Grade 3 Hendrie on Barber’s Our Secret Agent who is nominated for Champion Female Sprinter. Kazushi maintained an impressive 19 percent win rate in 2021.

A finalist in this category on several occasions, Gary seeks his first Outstanding Owner honour at the Sovereign Awards following another stellar season with his Canadian runners. For the second straight year Gary, a film producer based in California, was the leading owner at Woodbine by purse earnings. His familiar bright, pink silks landed in the winner’s circle 24 times and his horses earned over $1.6 million. Gary’s Canadian stars of 2021, trained by Mark Casse, included Frosted Over who blossomed in his 3-year-old season and won the Grade 3 Ontario Derby, earning him a finalist position in Champion Three-Year-Old Male category. Our Secret Agent, a 5-year-old mare, was one of the year’s top females winning the Grade 3 Hendrie Stakes and placed in four other graded stakes events. Gary’s gritty gelding Olympic Runner won the Grade 2 King Edward Stakes before a troubled outing in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile. Gary is also the co-owner of God of Love, a finalist for Champion Two-Year-Old Male.

This is the first Outstanding Owner nomination for Godolphin with purse earnings just shy of $1 million from 14 starts in Canada. The massive global Thoroughbred racing and breeding operation was founded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Godolphin horses can often be seen in the biggest races worldwide and in September of 2021 they arrived at Woodbine to win three Grade 1 stakes races in a span of 24 hours. Trainer Charlie Appleby sent out the 8-year-old gelding Walton Street (GB) to win the Canadian International (G1) by 5 3/4 lengths with an impressive 110 Beyer Speed Figure. The following day, Appleby saddled the Godolphin homebred 2-year-olds Wild Beauty (GB) winner of the Natalma Stakes (G1) and Albahr (GB) winner of the Summer Stakes (G1). Both events were Win and You’re In races for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. Albahr’s win in the Summer Stakes (G1) marked the 350th Group 1 win for Godolphin.

Live Oak Plantation, owned by Charlotte Weber, won its first Sovereign Award for Outstanding Owner in 2020 and had an even more lucrative season with its Canadian starters in 2021. Live Oak, located in Ocala, Florida, won 19 races from 68 starters, including seven stakes races. Leading the charge for the stable was Our Flash Drive, trained by Mark Casse, who won the Selene Stakes (G3) on Tapeta and the Ontario Colleen Stakes (G2) on the turf. The 3-year-old homebred filly by Ghostzapper is a finalist tonight in the Champion Three-year-Old Female and Champion Female Turf Horse categories. Live Oak’s homebred gelding Souper Stonehenge had a big year winning the Vigil Stakes (G3) and Jacques Cartier Stakes (G3). Another top runner for Live Oak in 2021 was Souper Escape, the 2020 Champion Older Main Track Female, trained by Michael Trombetta, topped a Live Oak exacta with Crystal Glacier, in the Grade 3 Trillium Stakes. Other stakes winners for the farm included March to the Arch and Tap It to Win.
