Sovereign Awards Celebrating Outstanding Achievements in Canadian Thoroughbred Racing

WE SALUTE WE SALUTE YOU YOU Throughout our fifty year history we have been blessed with many amazing horses, trainers, jockeys, grooms and supporters. In an industry that provides opportunity, heartbreak and exhilaration we have had our share of each. As we look back on our proud legacy and look forward to new adventures, we would like to thank all of the people that have joined us on this journey. We look forward to watching our bloodlines continue to bring joy to a new generation of owners and fans. Congratulations to all of this year’s Sovereign Award finalists. You have made Canadian Racing proud.

The Sovereign Award Trophy

On behalf of Chief Steward, R. Glenn Sikura and the Jockey

The Sovereign Award Trophy is a replica of St. Simon (1881-1908). St. Simon raced at age two and three and was undefeated in 10 starts. His major racecourse accomplishment was his 20-length victory in the Ascot Gold Cup. He annihilated the field with such ease that his jockey was unable to pull him up after the 2 1/2 mile test. Highly regarded as a racehorse, it was as a stallion that St. Simon gained everlasting international fame.

Michelle has worked for Hall of Fame trainer Robert Tiller for almost 10 years and she is the groom of Pink Lloyd, the 2017 Horse of the Year, a six-time Sovereign Award winner and a two-time finalist at this year’s awards. “He is my child,” said Michelle. “He is very smart and he loves being at the track. He just knows exactly what is going on.” Michelle learned everything she could about riding and horse care when she attended riding school in Caledon. She began to work with top circuit show jumpers and was soon travelling throughout the United States to major horse shows. When her son Devin was born in 2001, Michelle wanted to leave travelling behind and she checked in at Woodbine racetrack where she got different world,” said Michelle. “But my first job was with [owner/trainer] Shelley Fitzgerald and she also had a show jumping background and knew where I was coming from. to all the 2020 Sovereign Award Finalists and Best of Luck in 2021 KEVIN ATTARD RACING STABLE

“I am truly honoured to play my part in Canadian racing.” Life has been incredibly good to me. I’ve met kings and queens, presidents and prime ministers, the rich and the famous, a lot of colourful characters and plenty of decent, down-to-earth people. Even though I’ve experienced the lowest of the lows and the highest of the highs, it’s the hardships I’ve endured that have made me the person I am today. In racing, my overriding goal is simple and straight-forward: to breed and develop an extraordinary horse, the kind that comes along once in a lifetime, one whose name will live on for generations. That’s what drives me. I am truly honoured to play my part in Canadian racing and breeding and in 2021 we’re going to make Adena Springs Canada great again. But we can’t do it without you. Thank you for supporting us and we’re here to support you in your quest for the ultimate accolade in Canadian racing – a Sovereign Award. – Frank Stronach
