MATTHEW THE POOR

If You Love Me

Serving Christ and the Church in Spirit and Truth

W

hat does it mean to serve God in His Church? Whether you are clergy or laity, hold a position on the parish council or mop the floor of the nave—if you have chosen to serve Christ in any way, this book will challenge and inspire you to give your all for Christ.

the

author’s

introduction

Christian service . . . focuses on the catechization and reproof of oneself, mastery of the bodily desires . . . and the adoption of a warm and constant state of repentance in order to receive God’s grace. The end result of this process is usually self-abandonment, the surrender of oneself to God, the forging of an open and honest relationship with others, and a constant and reverent engagement in worship.

Abba Matta is known in the West as Matthew the Poor, and is widely regarded as the greatest Egyptian elder since St. Antony the Great. He produced a huge and varied body of work in Arabic, only a little of which has been translated into English. In addition, a great many of his informal talks to monks and visitors were recorded. He had a marvelous ability to communicate the deepest spiritual truths in the simplest and most practical language, making them accessible to laypeople as well as monastics. He speaks to the heart rather than the head, gently exhorting the reader to pursue a deeper life in Christ.

P

opular author and speaker Archpriest Michael J. Oleksa has spent most of his life serving the Church in Alaska and advocating for the Native populations there. But he has also had many adventures in other parts of the world. The unifying thread in all his experiences is the providence of God, leading him, providing for him, and guiding him through miracles large and small. In this collection of reminiscences, Fr. Michael relates story after story of the wondrous love and mercy of God working in his life and the lives his ministry has touched. His faith and enthusiasm are contagious. distinctives

LAWRENCE R. FARLEY Akathist to Jesus, Light to Those in Darkness

E

ventually, everyone comes to dwell in darkness for a time. That is when we need to turn to Jesus, the only Light of the world and the only rescue for those in pain and despair. We break through the darkness by offering praise to God. This akathist is for all who sojourn in the darkness, with the prayer that they will use such praises as this to break through.

Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos, Daughter of Zion

Z

ion in the Old Testament is a type of the Holy Mother of God. As God chose to dwell in Zion and thus blessed and glorified her, so God also chose to dwell in Mary and to bless and glorify her. In the New Testament, Jerusalem is revealed as both a virgin and a mother—just like the Holy Theotokos. This akathist draws on scriptures that reveal this image of Mary as Zion, so that we may see anew Christ’s Gospel work revealed in the Old Testament.

Akathist to Matushka Olga Michael

M

atushka Olga was the wife of a Yupik priest in an Alaskan village. She was not only mother to her own eight surviving children, but also spiritual mother to those in her parish. Olga served quietly, working as midwife in her village and constantly caring for the needy. She had a special gift in working with those who suffered abuse, especially sexual abuse. After her repose on November 8, 1979, many people experienced her coming to them in dreams, bringing her healing gifts. Matushka Olga’s sanctity reveals the possibilities for genuine theosis and holiness, even for those living in the world. Each Akathist: Saddle-stitched, 4 X 6, and 32 pages. LAWRENCE R. FARLEY

In the Beginning

The True Message of the Genesis Origin Stories

T

he assumption in most creation debates is that the claims of religion and of science are irreconcilable. But there is a third viewpoint—that while the Bible teaches that God created the world, it never states exactly how He did it. The origin stories in the Book of Genesis were never intended to be read as either science or literal history, but they contain important lessons. Fr. Lawrence Farley takes us through the first chapters of Genesis verse by verse, bringing out the spiritual truths hidden in this ancient text. A Song in the Furnace

The Message of the Book of Daniel

T

he Book of Daniel should be read with the eyes of a child. It’s a book of wonders and extremes—mad kings, baffling dreams with gifted interpreters, breathtaking deliverances, astounding prophecies—with even what may be the world’s first detective stories added in for good measure. To argue over the book’s historicity, as scholars have done for centuries, is to miss the point. In A Song in the Furnace, Fr. Lawrence Farley reveals all the wonders of this unique book to the receptive eye. A Song in the Furnace: The Message of the Book of Daniel Paperback 5.5 X 8.5 248 pages ISBN—9781944967314 $18.95

Time and Despondency

Regaining the Present in Faith and Life

I

dleness. Apathy. Restlessness. Procrastination. These are symptoms of what early Christian theologians called despondency (acedia), a spiritual sickness rooted in a lack of care or effort. A condition as old as the ancients, despondency thrives in today’s culture of leisure, anxiety, and digital distraction. Time and Despondency is a penetrating synthesis of ancient theology, spiritual memoir, and self-help practicality. It envisions despondency as the extension of a broken relationship with the experience of time. Driven by the fear of death and the anxiety of living, despondency drives us to abandon the present moment, forsaking the only temporal realm in which we have true fellowship with Christ. The remedies offered by timehonored Christian thinkers for this predicament constitute not only an antidote to despondency but also stepping stones back to the present moment. In regaining the sacredness of time, we re-encounter the Resurrection of Christ in the dark and restless moments of our lives. “Despondency might seem like a big, abstract subject, but Nicole makes it concrete and personal through her abundant (often brilliant) metaphors and warm writing style. . . . It’s a wonderful book, and I highly recommend it!” —Sarah Bereza

ANDREW STEPHEN DAMICK

Bearing God

The Life and Work of St. Ignatius of Antioch the God-Bearer

S

t. Ignatius, first-century Bishop of Antioch, called the “God-bearer,” is one of the earliest witnesses to the truth of Christ and the nature of the Christian life. Tradition tells us that as a small child, Ignatius was singled out by Jesus Himself as an example of the childlike faith all Christians must possess (see Matthew 18:1–4). In Bearing God, Fr. Andrew Damick recounts the life of this great pastor, martyr, and saint, and interprets for the modern reader five major themes in the pastoral letters he wrote: martyrdom, salvation in Christ, the bishop, the unity of the Church, and the Eucharist.

When You Pray

A Practical Guide to an Orthodox Life of Prayer

A

nyone who prays, or has tried to pray and given up in discouragement, knows praying—really praying—is not easy. Praying consistently seems almost impossible. Too often and too easily, prayer becomes a burden: one more item on an already overcrowded to-do list. Failing to pray becomes a source of guilt and stress as we must once again admit our inconstancy and procrastination to our father confessor. Yet, our Lord said, “Come to me, all of you who are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. My burden is easy and my yoke is light” (Matt. 11:30). The purpose of this book, then, is not to add to the burden, but to ease it by distilling the advice and experience of those who pray. distinctives

introduction

“I’ve called this collection of stories The Sweetness of Grace because I feel this title captures the one element of Orthodoxy that does not change, whether one lives in Asia, Europe, or on a Canadian island. Whether one is a priest, monastic, or layperson, the sweetness of grace is offered to us all: through the trials, through the victories, we struggle to acquire and hold onto it, and when we taste it, we want to share that sweetness with others. Recovering Your Humanity in a Broken World

ur first parents departed from what it means to be truly human when they ate from the forbidden tree. Ever since, humans have been working with corrupted minds and wills, employing a distorted approach to life. Lawrence Farley examines the Orthodox Church’s teaching on this difficult subject through the lens of Scripture and patristic writings, making the case that the existence of hell does not negate that of a loving and forgiving God. distinctives

• Offers a compendium of the scriptural, canonical, patristic, and liturgical material on hell in one easy-toread place • Includes theological arguments for the morality of eternal punishment and its consistency with belief in God as loving and merciful • Helps readers discern and identify what is really at stake in the ongoing debate about hell “Let us struggle with all our powers to gain Paradise. The gate is very narrow, and don’t listen to those who say that everyone will be saved. This is a trap of Satan so that we won’t struggle.”—St. Paisios the Athonite, d. 1994 rel ated

From God to You

The Icon’s Journey to Your Heart

I

n this follow-up to the popular Pictures of God, John Skinas introduces children to some of the ancient icon archetypes most treasured by Orthodox Christians—from the Icon Not Made by Hands to the Pantocrator of Sinai. From God to You follows the path of the icon through history and encourages children to mindfully consider icons and their stories as windows of inspiration and doorways to prayer. “Burned, smashed, and buried, icons have endured a great deal as they’ve made their way from God to you. They’ve reached you because He wants them in your church, in your home, and in your hands. But most of all, God wants you to keep His image in your heart, where, if you listen closely, you can hear His message with every beat. . . .”

In the Julian version of the calendar, feast days are shown on the date they are celebrated on the secular calendar (e.g., for those on the Julian Calendar, the feast of the Nativity of Our Lord is celebrated on January 7), and the liturgical date is displayed in smaller blue type just below the Gregorian (new calendar) date.

With these materials, anyone can host an effective discussion group and invite guests to a further exploration of Orthodox Christianity. In the program, you will find a highly engaging and superbly produced feature documentary about the “unaffiliated” category of people who are often referred to as “Nones.” This is the fastest growing demographic in America. There is also a Course Director’s Manual as well as a Moderator’s Workbook for leading group discussions. This ministry is designed to be lay-led with your priest as your spiritual advisor.
