REFABRICATION OF SABJI MANDI MEHRAULI,NEW DELHI The object of refabrication of the vegetable market is to create a design solution catering to the activities and customs of the people residing within one of the most oldest settlements of Delhi.The main intent is centered around the modelling of a community oriented public space,which strictly respects the existing urban fabric of the region while favourably aiding the existing population of the locale.

PROJECT SITE AREA: 0.8 acre CLIMATE: composite climate The vision for the redesign of the Sabji Mandi site is to create a vibrant and efficient marketplace that fosters a seamless experience for both buyers and sellers. By embracing modern design principles and the richness of local produce and promotes sustainable practices in a greener marketplace. Ultimately, our vision is to revitalize the Sabji Mandi site as a vibrant community space that embodies the essence of local culture, supports economic growth, and provides an exceptional experience for all stakeholders involved.

In total, there are around 100 shops. Most of the big shops have their own storages and the aarthi’s office. Wheareas,there are small vendors too, who don’t have any storage; they buy vegetables and fruits which they could sell in a day and hence no storing is required. The walls of the shops are made of bricks, the material of the roof varies from the usual brick to tin sheets.

This traditional proposed typology matches with the fabric of Mehrauli. Nothing fancy, nothing alien,just a simple, functional, organized sabji mandi is what would work the best there.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The design concept for a Sabji Mandi in Mehrauli would blend elements of Islamic and Indian architecture to reflect the rich historical context of the neighbourhood. The market would feature a central courtyard, serving as a green gathering space for vendors and customers. Sustainable design features, modern amenities, and pedestrian-friendly pathways would be incorporated, ensuring a comfortable and environmentally conscious environment. The basic idea of choosing the form [hexagon] came from Islamic monuments and the circulation path also.By creating a vibrant and culturally immersive space, the Sabji Mandi would harmoniously blend with the unique character of Mehrauli.

Design issues should address the following: Macro and micro climate, User behavior and requirements, Utility and space enhancement, Form and function, Circulation: horizontal and vertical, Site Planning and Landscape detailing. Structural details such as beam framing, building services / HVAC etc., Use of innovations in materials and techniques of construction Design detailing considering the barrier free environment, Socio-economic profile of user group, Parking details and standards, Application of energy rating systems viz. LEED, GRIHA. Design of high rise buildings/services oriented buildings.

The site choosen was bhalsawa sanitary landfill which is presently in jahagirpuri, New Delhi. The proposal was made to reconstuct the vigin site for urban development scheme.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The concept of our schematic zoning is based on grid planning. Grid planning is a fundamental and enduring concept in urban design that has significantly influenced the development of cities all over the world. Grid designs prove to have a scope by providing options for symmetry, green areas, and attractive streetscapes. Grid designs encourage effective land use, a crucial factor in urban planning.

The grid can be used to organize the allocation of space for residential, commercial, industrial, and recreational uses through zoning restrictions. Navigation is made simpler by the grids logical structure, making it simpler for both locals and visitors to get around.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

DESIGN DETERMINANTS The economic potential of a site refers to the opportunities and possibilities for generating economic value or benefits through the development or use of a specific piece of land or property.

Effective circulation refers to the well-planned and efficient layout of pathways and spaces within a site to facilitate the smooth movement of people and enhance functionality and accessibility.

EFFECTIVE CIRCULATION

ECONOMIC POTENTIAL Landmarks are notable and often iconic buildings or structures that hold significant cultural, historical, or architectural importance. These structures stand out for their distinctive design, innovative construction methods, historical significance, or symbolic value.

The walkability factor refers to the design and planning of urban environments and buildings to encourage and support pedestrian movement, making it easy, safe, and convenient for people to walk within and between various spaces, promoting healthier and more sustainable communities.

LANDMARKS

WALKABILITY

Legibility refers to the clarity and ease with which people can understand and navigate a built environment or site. It involves the design and organization of elements within a space to make it comprehensible, user-friendly, and visually coherent.

Adequate green spaces refer to the intentional inclusion and design of natural, green areas within urban environments or buildings. These spaces serve various purposes, such as promoting environmental sustainability, providing recreational areas, improving air quality, and enhancing the overall well-being of residents or users.

ADEQUATE GREEN SPACE The visual aspect refers to the deliberate consideration of how buildings and structures will appear within a specific location or site. It involves the aesthetics, design, and visual harmony of architectural elements with the surrounding environment and neighboring structures.

VISUAL ASPECT WORLD UNIVERSITY OF DESIGN

Interactiveness on site refers to the intentional design and incorporation of elements that encourage engagement, participation, and interaction between people and the built environment. It aims to create spaces that are dynamic, engaging, and responsive to the needs and desires of users.

On the hypothetically rejuvunated lands of the Bhalswa sanitary landfill, a proposed vibrant residential community to cater to the evergrowing shelter needs of contemporary Delhi.

The transformation aims to revitalize the area, turning a once-disused space into a safe and desirable place for living.

The idea is to produce a climate responsive,restorative and self sustaining housing society for the targeted users while targeting its common concerns including the imposed verticality of towers and lost connections to the ground.

SHADED COURTYARDS AS A SHARED GREEN Courtyards have been created among towers as a shared green owing to the harsh climate conditions of Delhi.

They have been oriented in lieu of the sunpath to constitute a shaded versatile common green allowing for social interaction.

Ground devoid of units to maintain openess and visibility and allow a seamless flow of the landscape.

PEDESTRIAN ROAD CONNECTIVITY THOUGHTFUL INTEGRATION OF WALKWAYS WITHIN THE COMMUNAL SPACE FOSTERS A PEDISTRIAN FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE, PROMOTING SOCIAL INTERACTION AND SENSE OF COMMUNITY. THE LANDSCAPE DESIGN, COMPLEMENTING THE PEDESTRIAN PATHWAYS, NOT ONLY ENHANCES THE AESTHETIC APPEAL BUT ALSO CONTRIBUTES TO A SUSTAINABLE AND GREEN LIVING ENVIRONMENT. PEDESTRIAN ROAD CONNECTIVITY

DOCUMENTATION OF KUMAONI SETTLEMENT

JAGESHWAR DHAM, ALMORA [U.K] History of Almora can be traced back to the ancient times of Mahabharata. However, the earliest historical account of the place is provided by a Chinese pilgrim of the seventh century.The pilgrim wrote in great detail about a kingdom called ‘Brahmaputra’.

A kingdom was first established in this area by the Katyuri dynasty. The Katyuri dynasty reigned from Dwarahat in Katurya Valley. During those times, there was a small settlement in this area, not much of any political significance.

King Baichaldeo of the Katyuri dynasty, who reigned in the region where present day.Almora is located, donated a major part of this land to a Gujarati Brahmin by name Sri Chand Tiwari.

In later times, during the rule of the Chand dynasty, Almora was founded around 1560 by Kalyanchand at this place which he called ‘Alam Nagar’. It was also called ‘Rajpur’.

ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSIS • Kumaon is one of the two regions and administrative divisions of Uttarkhand, a mountainous state of northern India, the other being Gharwal division.

• The traditional building technique of Kumaon Region called ‘KOTI BANAL’.

• There are two distinctive types of houses found , which are Row house type and Single House type. Most of the old houses of Kumaon have stone walls, mud floors, slate roofs and patangans [courtyards of gray stone]. The staircase is tucked on the front facade. The roof is of large slate stones supported by wooden beams. Surface and narrative crafts on a wall and door.

• Settlements are usually linear blocks or individual units. They are homesteadswith agriculture lands surrounding the settlement. The lower storey is low-ceil- inged base- ment and houses the cattle. The walls are made of local stone and wood and daubed with mud. The roof is of large slate stones supported by wooden beams. The staircase is tucked on the front façade. It is usually of stone and has 5-6 steps leading to the upper floor. The entrance porch is either open or covered with cantilever upper floor. The peculiar feature of all these houses is that they have a paved porch/ floor in the front of the house where many ac- tivities spill over during the day.

• A door is called kholi; a room, khand; the front reception room, tiwari; the space behind the house, kuriya; a row of houses together, bakhal or kholo. A rub- ble-masonry wall made of slate (pattdar) and coated with mud plaster (made with red soil); and the roof (pakh) is a timber truss finished with local slate. Mud is mixed with cow dung and other organic additives for thermal insulation. The flooring is made of wooden planks supported with wooden trunks as beams and then smeared with a paste of cow dung and clay. Doors and windows are commonly made of loheta and surai and in some cases of kedar [deodar cedar, sal tree, tun wood .

MOTIFS The motifs and designs are inspired by the religious beliefs of the community and the natural resources around them. They generally include conch shells, creepers, floral patterns, swastika, footsteps of goddess, geometric designs and figures of gods and goddesses.

DOCUMENTATION OF A TRIBAL COMMUNITY

RABARI TRIBE SETTLEMENT The Rabari, also goes by the name Rewari, Rakas or Desal belongs to an Indigenous tribal caste spread all across North-West India. The word Rabari literally means “outsiders” which fairly describes their social and professional life as nomadic cattle and camel herders.

Proficient In Hindi, Marwari, and Haryanvi, they use Devanagari script to communicate among themselves. The Raban tribe can be divided further into 133 recognized sub-castes following Hinduism.

The nomadic life comes with migratinq in groups consisting of Individual families and living in a tent house or under open skies ‘With ther cattle and other supplies including utensils, rations, clothes, etc.

Originally complete nomads, now live a life as semi-nomads as they move depending on the season making their living through milk selling.

As time passed, some adopted the modernized way of living, living the nomadic life behind and settling down in cities.
