I was born and raised in Saint-Petersburg, a city full of inspiration. I spent my childhood drawing but after high school that choice turned into a technical major. After graduating life brought me to work with furniture and after a while, I felt the desire to extend my focus from the shape to the space. From that moment, I have never been able to satisfy my hunger of growing more. Attending design school and then beginning my own interior design studio were the first steps. But after a few years, a desire to do something more important led me to leave my city and move to Italy to study architecture. I have found a strong impulse for personal and professional growth in this move to a new country. That is why after a while I decided to take the opportunity to expand my horizons even further by enrolling for a semester in a master’s program in Germany.

As a designer how can you bring farming to the cities where people can see, participate or celebrate cultivation - and understand what they eat, much better? Where not only awareness related to food is available, but as a community we become more responsible for our actions. How can you change the image of cities as the ones that only consume, to ones that contribute too? Or make farming so easy for people using technologies of today that makes it easy for people to grow it in their homes? Urban Meal Formicary, is a place where people can generate/learn/contribute to grow food for their city.

Most of the Urban Meal Formicary premises are available for observation and visits during excursions and lectures, which gives the most complete picture of farming and related processes. The openness of the territory, the location of parks, game, exhibition and festival zones, attract different groups of people. Speaking in a phenomenological paradigm, the involvement of citizens is not intrusive and linear, instead, a full range of opportunities is created: from a light contact and observation, to a full participation in the process when such demand arises. We distinguish 5 main stages of involvement: 1. User (buyer in the market), 2. Observer 3. Controller 4. Partner 5. Participant (urban farmer) Moreover, the relevant functions constantly intertwine within Urban Meal Formicary and, going to the market for fresh tomatoes, you can witness the process of growing the vegetable beds along the way or see an unfamiliar root crops next to the tomatoes and then sign up for a culinary workshop involving those ingredients. Passive involvement can switch to active and back, depending on the person’s life situation.

A good example of a stable and self-organizing system in a natural environment is an ant colony. Its stability is determined, among other factors, by its great sensitivity to all processes occurring both inside and outside, reaction to them and its ability to adapt to them. Another unique feature within such colony is the ability of ants to swap their roles in response to a changing environment. On this swap their roles, we focus in your project. Urban Meal Mine as a self-regulating anthill, where many additional processes flow during the course of the main work and all this affects the workplace, making it respond and adapt. The system of open gardens, while retaining its general shape in the overall layout of the territory, during the operations may vary considerably, responding and adjusting to its current tasks.

Technical drawing, Constructive decisions

Location Xinchang, Cina Architects Atelier Deshaus Tutor prof. Anna Maria Giovenale Team Roberta Menaguale

Overview The aim of the assignment was to propose a structural, constructive, and energy-efficient solution and to develop my technical drawing skills. As a layout for the work, I chose Xinchang Village's Central Kindergarten designed by Atelier Deshaun. Since the project is situated in one of the most seismically active regions in the world, we suggested a reinforced brick masonry. The building brickwork use locally-produced shale sintering bricks.

More with Less Residance

Project Data

2015 / Residance. Interior Design Implemented Project Location Saint-Petersburg, Russia Year 2015 Floor-space 41,5m² Construction term 2 months Budget Low-budget project

Overview This project to transform the interior of a 41.5 square metre flat required strict adherence to the budget and severe time constraints. Notwithstanding the restrictions, the designer insisted on changing the existing plan. Originally the flat was to consist of two bedrooms, an extremely small kitchen-dining area and a useless corridor, which was not designed to provide any storage possibilities and did not provide any living space. The designer came up with an idea to switch the kitchen and the bedroom and include the corridor to get an adequate place to serve as a living room for spending time with family. The renovations satisfy the current Russian Housing Design Guide.

The renovation was finished in two months including electrical and plumbing work. The furnishings were acquired mostly thanks to an assortment of Ikea furniture and local manufacturers. The preferences were for built-in furniture to maximize the use of space in the small apartment. In this way, the fridge is hidden in a wall which separates the kitchen from the living room and a bed in the bedroom was placed on a raised floor which contains storage for bed linens. The finished project provides a comfortable living space with an exceptionally small footprint.

Bookshelf "JAWA" and "Clockwork Lamp" Product design & hand made

Project Data

2015 / Product design Bookshelf Table lamp Project Type Product Design Implemented Materia Metal refuse, Welding Year 2015 Collaboration Welder - Slava Voronkov Overview The starting point of the design was the metal waste I could find in my friend’s garage and the need for a bookshelf. My friend taught me how to work with a welding unit. In this way, JAWA, the legendary chain of motorcycles, was transformed into a bookshelf in my hands. Then in another improvisation with metal, the Clockwork Lamp was born.

Learning to weld pieces, to heat the metal until it becomes red, then to bend it – was a very exciting experience for me. It was surprising to find out that such a harsh material like metal can have a quite delicate effect.
