How does consciousne

Relativity by M.C. Escher - multiple viewpoints and impossible stairs

Architectural Form: Forms follow functions, (or not), or follow a parametric design; they definitiely try to follow a formal system with rules. Self-referring formal systems, lika parametric designs, are akin to strange loops.

Tectonics: Kenneth Frampton calls tectonics as the ‘poetry of construction’. The argument lies that there is no theory needed for architceture to follow except the simple fact that it is a construction exercise which creates structures

The human mind, made of inanimate protein at its most basic level, is capable of identifyig and mirroring patterns in nature (isomorphism, forming strange loops). By this, it makes it possible to arrive at meanings. Thus, meaningles patterns become meaningful; how might this be working in architecture?

How do

strange loops exist

in Architecture? - Anam Akhter

inanimate matter? - Douglas R. Hofstatder ‘Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid’

“The strange loop phenomena occurs whenever, by moving upwards (or downwards) through levels of some hierarchial system, we unexpectedly find ourselves right back where we started”

- Dr. Hofstadter

Symmetry: Perhaps most studied since ancient times, symmetry is defined by Vitruivios as the relationship between parts to a whole, hinting at a formal system that is self aware in that it alludes to itself - parts + whole.

Contrast: Contrast between shapes, light and shade etc create meanings that are inter-dependent on bpoth aspects. Light gets meaningful because of presence of the dark, curves acquire meanings on plan surfaces.

Minnette de Silva A Sketch of a Politically Conscious Architecti

The Indian Independence movement played a crucial role in discovering and asserting an ‘Indian’ identity which was defined as different from the Western imperial powers.

de Silva attended the CIAM Bridgewater Conference in 1947 as the only female Asian delegate. She was trained in the AA and was the first modernist architect in Sri Lanka.

She pioneered Regional Modernism; proposing tenets of modernsim that valued local arts and crafts and vernacular forms. Her work was a synthesis of the local and the Modern.

The questions on Identity, tropical climate of Sri Lanka, even herself as a female architect in a male dominated field, lead to investigations in the ‘Exotic in architecture’, like the picture.

de Silva was uniquely situated as a person and her contributions to the field is immense, which poses a challenge to the supposed dominance of the design process than the person.

Right after gaining Independence from the British Colonial rule, Sri Lanka witnessed its first ever practising woman architect - the first Sri Lankan Modernist architect Ms. Minette de Silva. She is credited to be the first to introduce modernist ideals in Sri Lankan architecture that, instead of breaking away from the past, sought its revolution by incorporating local craft and materials, and promoting a Sri Lankan identity -- a feat that is indeed exemplary. While literature on Sri Lankan Modern Architecture sheds light on the likes of well known modernist architects like Geoffery Bawa, Channa Daswatte, etc., yet it fails to do so on the life and work of this talented architect.

The Modern Vitruvius The purpose is to compare the Vitruvian philosophy and ways of building, obtained from treatise, ‘On Architecture’, with that of a ‘Tiny House in a Prairie’, a unique project that is completely modern in its existence. This is to understand the contemporary building philosophy with the oldest known treatise on the subject, and perhaps be reassured (or startled) that Architecture, despite the various and sometimes utterly contrasting phases throughout its history, has an essence that remains unchanged.

& the Tiny House Kamama Prairie is a 92-acre nature preservend located in rural Adams County, Ohio. This prairie is notable and renowned amongst experts as a particularly rare ecosystem, limited to a small area in southwestern Ohio and central Kentucky. A need to build a new shelter in the site for the land steward of this Prairie was felt, and thus the Tiny House was envisaged and eventually built by students of DAAP from a shipping container.

Design Process

Given by Vitruvius

Followed by Tiny House

Structure rests on pilotis or piles as foundations. Timber material widely used - here the panels are oak strips, a fine material. Steel a novelty. Vitruvius advised to use black above dado with strips of vermilion and ochre and simple interior without ornamentation - very Modernist.

Public Square Appraisal:

U Square

Open square at the intersection of Calhoun and S Market Street, surrounded by restaurants and Calhoun Hall. Lively and open, used mostly by students and professionals working nearby, containing an apparent commercial agenda inherently. Sitting down at the public space, one can feel a sense of liveliness and activity all around. The space itself is quite enclosed and small, with a few main elements contained within it, namely; concrete benches with fountains at the back, metal furniture to sit down, and a circular green space.

Deception So fluidly we run, Gliding sound.less.ly, Across green and yellow fields, Leaving them behind, Quietly. (like a night’s footstep) And this is how we only cheat, Ourselves. For we are not skimming smoothly, But rather tearing through violently, On powerful engines that rival Wild crazed horses. On wheels that spin mercilessly, Like agents of cold deaths, Divided by clear windows that Bear the brunt of the wind’s war on speed. We drink in the endless vista, Like a smoothie-a-drink. And but - who are we fooling? Who gets conquered on the journey, And who gets deceived?
