ABSTRACT Anaïs Lora
The Story of Frederiksberg’s Hidden Gems explores co-creative urbanism through the process analysis of a temporary intervention, Frederiksberg’s Hidden Gems, that took place on Kong Georgs Vej and Dronning Olgas Vej on Friday the 31st of May 2013 and was realised together with local citizens, Frederiksberg Experience (the union of Frederiksberg’s local businesses), different departments of the Municipality of Frederiksberg and the student association, Creative Roots. The intervention had multi-layered purposes: to create synergies between the existing networks, to reveal the qualities of the neighbourhood, its residents and activities, and to engage the locals into a meaningful transformation of their neighbourhood. Before becoming the initiator and coordinator of Frederikbserg’s Hidden Gems, I founded the association Creative Roots in August 2012. After building up the association network through other projects, I used it as a tool to navigate between the different stakeholders in order to create the necessary synergies that brought this thesis project to life. This book offers an overview of the background setting, the realization process, the local people, their activities and networks. I relate here details on the co-creative process, its successes and failures, its synchronicities and challenges, while drawing out local knowledge of the area’s social networks and activities, practical learning on civic engagement tools and recommendations for co-creation applied to starting a local urban renewal program. 45 ECTS MSc Thesis Student Anaïs Lora - pfh904 Supervisors Anne Tietjen - Assistant Professor Trine Agervig Carstensen - Assistant Professor Jeff Risom - Head of Gehl Institute Centre for Forest & Landscape Faculty of Science University of Copenhagen June 2013

As a student group, we worked under two common goals: how to explore co-creative urbanism and how to actually co-create life between buildings in the real context of the Nordre Fasanvej area(1). Our project involved a broad number of stakeholders from urban designers (us), social scientists, and decision-makers, to local residents and workers. In order to facilitate our work as a group and our interactions with the other stakeholders, we created a name, the co|urbanists, and a website to gather and share our work with each other and later on with others: courbanism.com(2). Our focus area, Nordre Fasanvej Kvarteret, was chosen following a collaboration opportunity with the Områdefornyelse Nordre Fasanvej Kvarteret of Frederiksberg Municipality. The project leader, Brian Hansen Westerheim, welcomed our participation in the process from the beginning and his team offered us access to their latest collected data. The Common Ground is a base/framework for our Master Thesis on cocreative process. It presents collections of information from formal and written documents, including the program of Områdefornyelse Nordre Fasanvej Kvarteret (Program for Områdefornyelse i Nordre Fasanvej Kvarteret 2013-2018, 2013), events, workshops, interviews, casual meetings and additional maps that constitute a basis for further investigation in our individual thesis projects. I personally focus on the impact of co-creative temporary intervention on social networks, and I present here some key points of the Common Ground, necessary to place my project in its context and to illustrate its relevance.

The focus areas for future development in Frederiksberg include Nordre Fasanvej area in the North, where the Co|Urbanists contributed to the urban renewal, as well as the Flintholm area in the East, where the student association Creative Roots participated in Frederiksberg’s KUBE 52 Weeks of Activities project.
Nordre Fasanvej Kvarteret is located in the north of Frederiksberg(3). Surrounded by the Muncipality of Copenhagen, Frederiksberg is however an independent city. It is located north-west of Copenhagen’s city centre. While being the densest city of Denmark, Frederiksberg is known for its residential villa neighbourhoods and its green atmosphere. The vision of the municipality of Frederiksberg is to become a healthy, vibrant and green destination in the capital (Frederiksbergstrategien, 2012). The development strategy is divided into four themes: the climate city, the knowledge city, a destination in the capital and quality in everyday life. The municipality HI½RIWEW[IPPQEMRJSGYWEVIEWJSVYVFERHIZIPSTQIRX(4).The area around Bispeengbuen and Nordre Fasanvej is one of them and has just received funding to realize the urban renewal program: Områdefornyelse Nordre Fasanvej Kvarteret. PRELIMINARY SITE ANALYSIS
URBAN RENEWAL STRATEGY
The area has a great variety of building typologies and identities, from an industrial raw atmosphere around Bispeengbuen to a calm and domesticated villa area on Kong Georgs vej and Dronning Olgas vej(7). This industrial area is unique within Frederiksberg, and the preservation of its atmosphere and historical heritage is challenging due the area’s lack of pedestrian friendliness. The creative villa environment is a mixed-used area of housing and industries. The biggest social housing of Frederiksberg, Stjernen, stands out from the typical building block of Frederiksberg with its 70’s modern architectural style. Adding to the fragmentation of the area, heavy infrastructure(8) (S-train elevated railway, Bispeengbuen, major XVEJ½G WXVIIXW GYXW XLI EVIE MRXS TMIGIW -R GSRWIUYIRGI XLI RSVXLIVR part of Frederiksberg is perceivied as being part of Copenhagen. These disconnections, together with a lack of green public spaces(9) and other places to meet and stay are important challenges to overcome in the process of civic engagement.

The integration of the local citizens and stakeholders is considered as a key point in the strategy to ground the urban renewal and set up long-term synergies. The urban renewal also suggests temporary use as a suitable QIXLSH³³XS½RHXLIQSWXETTVSTVMEXIWSPYXMSRW´´ERHFVMRKRI[JYRGXMSRW to the area (Program for Områdefornyelse i Nordre Fasanvej Kvarteret, 2013, p.71).

The urban renewal program points out potentials in terms of: - unique atmospheres and identities to preserve and that can in part be illustrated by the building typologies of the area; - under-used spaces, mostly around de regional road, which fragment the area and act as a mental barrier; - and local stakeholders to integrate in the process. It also highlights that although there are many private green pockets, the area is lacking in public green open spaces as well as other kind of places to meet and stay.

SPECIFYING A PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION
Specifying how I could contribute the best to the urban renewal have been a long process. I had been splitting my resources between Creative Roots, where I was exploring co-creation through practice and the thesis project, where I was developing a theoritical background, until a day in 1EVGL 8LEX HE] XLI X[S TVSNIGXW ½REPP] QIX HYVMRK E [EPO MR XLI Creative Villa Environment, and it became clear that I would participate in the urban renewal by revealing some existing potentials of the area, fostering social connections and creating useful synergies for the coming urban renewal through a co-creative urban intervention, putting into play the network and opportunities I had built up with Creative Roots. Considering the two strategical points of civic engagement and temporary use, the relatively short timeframe of the thesis project and its location MRXMQIFIJSVIXLISJ½GMEPFIKMRRMRKSJOmerådefornyelse Nordre Fasanvej Kvarteret(5), it seemed as if the best way to contribute to the toolbox for co-creation in the Nordre Fasanvej area was to explore how temporary use could be developed as a method for co-creation. 1 Bispeengbuen

CREATIVE VILLA ENVIRONMENT AN INTERESTING STARTING POINT
The Creative Villa Environement standed out as an interesting starting point for a project on social connections and existing potentials. Indeed, the welcoming atmosphere of the streets and the complex environement offered by the mixed-used atypical urban fabric captured my attention as a place where a neighborhood spirit could easily grow.
A MEANGINGFUL LOCATION
The area is located in the South part of Nordre Fasanvej Kvarteret, between /VSRTVMRWIWWI7S½IW:INERH4VMRW'SRWXERXMRW:INERHEPSRK/SRK+ISVKW Vej, Dronning Olgas Vej(10). It is part of Mariendalsvej Kvarteret, whose common historical background explains today’s urban fabric and bonds the streets together. It is also in direct vicinity with the social housing, Stjernen, and therefore offers the possibility to create new connections through a common intervention along Kong Georgs Vej and Dronning Olgas Vej and as a long-term perspective to forster exchange between the two areas.
A WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE
A BONDING HISTORY

Even the fences, [LMGLEX½VWXWMKLXGSYPHFITIVGIMZIHEWLSWXMPI SJJIVIHEWIRWYEPI\TIrience through the variety of their color, material and height (11). During my exploration of the neighbourhood, I enjoyed the inspiring street names full of kings, queens, princes and princesses and their names did inspire later on the title of the intervention. But there was more behind the names that I could expected. There was a common history, a story learned from Jens Degerbøl, an enthusiast local resident of the Smedekollektivet on Kong Georgs Vej 10 during a walk we took on the afternoon of April the 4th. Here follows an short extract of the story adapted from Jens’ talk.

‘‘At the end of the 19th century, the grounds of Mariendals Kvarteret was owned by a rich man, Niels Josephen. He did a lot to improve the neighbourhood, such as bringing the tramsways to Falkoner Allé in 1884. They were parked on Dronning Olgas Vej, where the day care ‘Remisen’ (depot) is today. In 1884, he also shaped the villa parcels(12) and made public the streets Kong Georgs Vej ERH(VSRRMRK3PKEW:IN%X½VWX LIXVMIHXSREQI/SRK+ISVKW:IN8LSVEWZIN from Thora Josephen, his wife. It was refused. (13) Mixed-Used Area industry service housing
This common background bonds the streets together with a meaningful story.
What seems to be a quiet dwelling neighbourhood is in reality a complexmixed-used urban fabric(13), which consists in front villas, mainly dwellings, with industrial buildings in their backyards, which hosts services and industries(14). When you walk in the street you can see a collection of signs, that invites you to take a look in the backyards. If you are lucky enough, you are there welcome to by passionate people, residents or workers that are happy to show you what they do from teaching to building, from painting to sewing. All this rich creativity is like hidden treasures you do not expect to meet when wandering in a villa environment.

The backyards hide an unexpexted range of activities from creative industries to service buisinesses. There are services such as lawyers, doctors, electricians, plumbers as well as acupunture, and yoga centre. How to reveal existing potentials and foster social interaction through a co-creative temporary intervention from the positive assets of Nordre Fansavej area?
Co-create a neighbourhood event to reveal existing potentials, connect, create synergies, engage locals and spread awareness through action.
The co-creative intervention will bond the local networks together through action, creating new connections and fostering a community spirit, that will lead to new local initiatives. By bringing attention to the positive assets of the neighbourhood, it will create awareness about the canvas of possibilities and enlarge the perspectives of the area. By temporarily transforming the streets as a place to stay and meet, a place for recreation, it will inspire the citizens to reconquer this public space in their every day life.

However, my role as urban designer and the degree of participation of the citizens varied during the co-creative process according to sub-objectives. In order to do so, my method was to create a name, a structure, a brand and a network in order to navigate between the different stakeholders and to integrate the project in an existing larger project and network. This method is the one I had set together with other students from the beginning of the association Creative Roots EX SYV ½VWX 'S'VIEXMZI Breakfast in June 2012: to bridge students, professionals, decision-makers and local citizens through the realisation of 1:1 project. Inspired by the rich variety of fences of the neighbourhood as a place to display, I created an adapted project-based tool for engaging the local citizens in the process: the collections of portraits and realization of an urban gallery during the neighbourhood event. There, my main role was to gather all the activities together in one common program and to integrate it into the larger framework of FRB Dage. The aim behind this method was to include, bond and co-realise concrete interventions that reveals the qualities of the area today.

THE MUNICIPALITY OF FREDERIKSBERG Jørgen Glenthøj
BY OG MILJØ Brian
KULTUR OG FRITID Marianne
As inall institution, the municipality is organised into administrative sectors, subdivided into departments(16). They all follow the directives from the City Council, represented by Mayor Jørgen Glenthøj. The project combines the sector By og Miljø (city and environment) with Kultur og Fritid (culture and leisure) from the service sector, within the framework of an existing annual event, FRB Dage and of the municipality’s branding strategy, Oplev Frederiksberg. Putting all this into play was possible through the partnership between the student association Creative Roots and Frederiksberg Experience, the union of businesses of Frederiksberg. By og Miljø is in charge of the development and maintenance of a safe, beautiful, green and sustainable environment. It includes the department of urban planning, where Brian Hansen Westerheim, Jannie Rydahl Magnussen, and Ditte Klerens Søndergaard were my main contacts working on Områdefornyelse Nordre Fasanvej Kvarteret. They plan to ½RHEPSGEPTPEGIMR2SVHVI*EWERZIN/ZEVXIV[LIVIXLI][MPPWIXXPIXLI secretariat of the project in order to be closer to the citizens. By og Miljø also includes technical departments such as Vej og Park, in charge of the XVEJ½GVIKYPEXMSRW*6&&VERHZWIR ½VIHITEVXQIRX ERH*6&+EVXRIVSK Vejservice (city gardeners and maintenance). Kultur og Fritid is in charge of the cultural strategy of the municipality and of an annual cultural budget of 500.000 kr. to distribute to associations and other actors to realise events and ensure a vibrant cultural life in Frederiksberg. It is an interdisciplinary unit in the municipal organization. As such, this department works in most cases in collaboration with others. This is illustrated by Marianne Hovmand’s projects, in the Flintholm area and in the social housing, Stjernen. Around Flintholm, she takes part in the urban development through the project KUBE 52 Weeks of Activities, which aims to bring cultural activities before the new cultural centre /9&)MWFYMPX -R7XNIVRIR WLIXEOIWTEVXMRWSGMEPTVSNIGXW WYGLEWE¾IE market event in Stjernen coordinated with the social worker, Annette Bruun, with the goal to bring culture to social areas. Another event is the festival of Frederiksberg, FRB Dage, coordinated by Hanne Schonemann. It contributes to the branding strategy of Frederiksberg: Oplev Frederiksberg (Discover Frederiksberg).

FREDERIKSBERG EXPERIENCE Sine
At FRB Dage, all citizens, residents and actors, were invited to initate events to celebrate the city.To do so, they had to register their event on FRB Dage website. They are then gathered into one program by the coordinator from the muncipality: Hanne Schonemann from Kultur og Fritid. In addition, the Mayor had decided this year to give funding and to delegate the realisation of major events for the day to Frederiksberg Experience, the union of businesses. The aim of the union is to bring together the business community in Frederiksberg to work on common interests and foster synergies. Sine Lyons, the project leader, contacted Creative Roots to collaborate in creating three thematic experiences for three streets that [IVIMRXIRHIHXSFIGPSWIHXSXVEJ½GJSVXLIIZIRX
Creative Roots is an association of students in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design from the Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen that I founded in August 2012.We work under the motto MEET & CREATE. The aim is to create a bridge between the study environment at the university and professional life, and building an active network of students, local citizens and decision-makers through the realisation of co-creative projects. Therefore, the partnership with Frederiksberg Experience for FRB Dage was a real opportunity to put in practice our motto.

ENTHUSIASTS AT SMEDEKOLLEKTIVET
Who could have predicted that a random encounter of Henning, a resident from the Smedekollectivet, would provide me some of the core actors of the co-design process. Smedekollektivet is a collective founded in 1969. They have been organising summerfest with their close neighbours since 1984. Bente is coordinating the residents and neighbours to organize the event. She knows all about the story of the Smedekollektivet. Henning and Lars are always up for playing music for the summerfest. Jens is a carpenter, passionate in many things, including walks and history. He is part of Middelalderlandsbyen, a medieval village, in Brøndby. He was a great supporter of the project. He has a profond knowledge of the history of the neighbourhood and of Frederiksberg. Through his work, he knows Usama from the Frederiksberg Snedkeri.

One of them, Camilla, gives art classes at the Frederiksberg Daghøjskole og Kursuscenter (FDKC). Hanna is the directrice of the school. Passionate about her job, she has been working for many years in the neighbourhood and knows residents of the the closet villa. FDKC offers adult education training in health, art and IT. There is a pleasant atmosphere between the staff and the students. Betaniahjemmet is a nursing home of 60 apartments. Jette is the project coordinator there. She is the one to contact to collaborate on an event. 8LI]I\LMFMXEVXMRXLIHMRMRKVSSQERHTVSNIGX½PQWMRXLIGLETIP:IV] welcoming, she helped me with communicating with the residents there. 8LI½ZI-LEZIQIX[IVIVIEPP]WEXMW½IH[MXLXLITPEGIWE]MRKWIRXIRGIWWYGL ’’We never get bored here.’ ’ Some of the relatives of Smedekollektivet’s residents had stayed in the past there. (23) Local Social Networks
MEDIA SILICON VALLEY
A group of creative media businesses are located in vicinity to each other on Dronning Olgas vej. When I met the CEO of Citrus Media, he called this media hub the ‘‘ Media Silicon Valley’’. Too busy this time to get more involved, they are nevertheless an interesting network to contact at an earlier stage of the process. If we extend the area to Stjernen, the clubs of Sjternen, coordonated Annette Bruun, are interesting networks as well. Among them, Stjernekoret is run by Maria Kynne. She does not live in the neighbourhood, but is really engaged in bringing together cultures through music. Stjernekoret is composed of about 20 women, 5 coming from Stjernen.

COLLABORATING WITH AN INSTITUTION
While being a student opens doors with locals, to work with an institution, the best is to have a structure. This is how Creative Roots took part in the project. Here is in brief how the major connections were built.

PLANTING A SEED
At the community event organised by the Områdefornylse, I had the chance to ‘‘plant a seed’’, without knowing it at the time. I asked the Mayor about his opinion of the concept of Open Streets. He answered he was not against it, that the municipality did it already for sport events and that I should get in touch with Simone Chimera, from Frederiksberg Experience. He had the funding for FRB Dage and who was at the event as well. That I did, using Creative Roots because it seemed to be a good project for the association. We exchanged our contact details. I proposed to Maria to take the choir outdoor for the occasion of a neighbourhood event. Maria was enthusiastic about it from the beginning and the whole choir took in charge the activity.
To integrate more locals in the annual sommerfest of the Smedekollektivet and close neighbours. To mark the event as just one among a permanent process.

It went according to plan, except that the walk was too long. Around 20 people participated. It was perceived as a great success, but everyone (locals/municipality, host/ participants).
Sjternekoret could not stay after the songs, so the connection were limited. But it created a shared experience between peolple from Stjernen and people in its neighbourhood.
It led to exchanges with other activities and attacked attentions with the costumes, an invitation indoor by a local engineer, an additional presentation of the Smedekollektivet, knowledge brought by the participants.
DOES IT HAVE LONG-TERM EFFECTS? INSPIRATION Jannie was inspired by the walk and might organise new ones with Jens. LOCAL KNOWLEDGE It shared local knowledge about the neighbourhood and revealled some of the existing local stakeholders.

It created an activity in the street for a couple of hours, where the students and their work was visible. It would have been better with more people in the street.
It a a great success for the artists, and suceed in revealing their activity
It was clearly not a success. There was not enough people engaged in the process to animate the activities..

WHAT WAS PLANNED?
HOW WAS IT PLANNED?

WHY WAS IT PLANNED?
HOW DID IT LOOK LIKE?
WAS IT ADAPTED?
DID IT SUCCEED?
It was removed for safety purposes.
It did not succeed at all. The wind was to strong under the bridge and the curtains acting like a sail. For safety reasons, it had to be taken down,
To connect both side of the street. To create an atmosphere. To communicate something was happening.
To create a place to stay during the day for the families. To add an extra activity.
To provide the stage for the event. To learn by doing. To participate in the atmosphere.
To provide alternative seatings next to the stage. To create a cosy, lounge atmosphere.
WAS THERE INSTANT EFFECTS?
It reduced our resources.
The kids drew on the tables and stayed calm, enabling the parents to relax.
It worked as planned. We added tents to protect from the rain and sun.
It was a success. The delivery and setting up was easy The bakery owner was very happy. The tables were used all day.
Most of the building workshops were under the rain and we missed UYEPM½IH LIPT YRXMP XLI last few days. However, we manage to provide a stage that worked.
It created a hand-made cosy atmosphere. The host of the performance consider it as a great success.

We got free plants on the day, which improve the design instantly. We added a tent in case it was raining.
The drawing spread to the bike lane.
IS THERE LONG-TERM EFFECTS? LOCAL KNOWLEDGE - the wind under the bridge is strong; - an authorisation from the owner of the bridge was needed. PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE - Sometimes the best is to let go a project when the resources are lacking.
- about H.C. Ørstedsvej as being a potential place to stay PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE
- Table with top black board is an adapted design for families
PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE - construction details; - need for expert help on WTIGM½GXEWOW NETWORK - carpenter
- about Værnedamsvej being a potential place to stay PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE
- Low, loungy seatings is adapted design for next to a stage
PUTTING IN PERSPECTIVE
Finally, Kong Georgs Vej and Dronning Olgas Vej did not have enough activities out to justify their closing. However, the open streets the most successful (Værnedamsvej and H.C.Ørstedvej) were the ones that already had a previous experience. H.C. Ørstedsvej was as well empty last year. The local people were not warned early enough. As the main feedback from the locals about Frederiksberg’s Hidden Gems is about improving the PR of the event, it seems that it is quite a common issue. It leaves how ever perspectives to what could become the neighbourhood event in the future with more XMQIJSVTVITEVEXMSRERHE½VWXWLEVIHI\TIVMIRGI
PERSONAL vs. LOCAL INVESTMENT
Among the 11 activities of Frederiksberg’s Hidden Gems, I initiated and realised mainly myself 2 of them (portrait gallery, ourdoor games), I initiated and co-realised another two (the walks). Four activities were initiated and realised (open house, summerfest planning meeting...) by locals and 2 were following my suggestions, but realised by enthusiastic locals (yoga classes and the music from Stjernekoret). Most of the spontaneous surprises came out of the activities initiated and realised by the locals, maybe due to a stronger feeling of ownship and investment in the activity. The locals that offered an activity were already in touch with me in April. May, thatMWXSWE]XLIQSRXLSJXLIIZIRX[EWHI½RMXIP]XSSPEXIXSXV]XSIRKEKI more people unless they already know someone who is involve (Bente). With a longer timeframe, it seems possible to get the street full of activities, while keeping mainly the role of a facilitator of the projects of the local community and not realisator/main host of the activities.
3.2 SUCCESSES & FAILURES ANALYSIS CO-CREATIVE PROCESS
It highlighted many stakeholders of the area, existing active networks, and potential local contributions (material, resources).
FOSTERING SOCIAL CONNECTIONS
It created many connections within the locals, but as well between the locals and the urban renewal department of the municipality. The facebook page enables this new networks to grow in the future.
It did not worked out as planned. The participantes were more interested in inviting the people into their courtyard.
TAKING ACTIVITIES OUT IN THE STREET
ENGAGING CITIZENS IN THE PROCESS
OBJECTIVE NETWORKING & BUILDING UP BACKGROUND
The involvment process was a bit too late in the process.
The engagement took many forms: either through, portraits (60 portraits), through activities (8 activities offered or co-created), sponsorship (wood, costume), facebook likes (64). It could have reach more people if it was initiated earlier in the process.

REFLECTIONS ON THE PROCESS
What makes it a success was mainly a good strategy of engagement in the co-creative process. 3.3 PERSONAL LEARNINGS
This exceptional practical experience offered me the possibility to challenge myself every day and do things I would not have imagined to do. If I have to remember one word from this adventure, it would be about management: management of time and resources, management of risk and planning, management of people and communication.
TIME & RESOURCES
Most of the failures of the project are due to a lack of time and resources. It was a bit too much for one person to cope with all the work I have accomplished, and it is visible in the results. The portrait gallery suffered JVSQMX%WMX[EWQ]½VWXTVSNIGXEXXLMWWGEPIERHWSQIXEWOW[IVIRI[XS QIMX[EWEFMXHMJ½GYPXXSHIPIKEXIERHWIIQIHXSXEOIXLIWEQIXMQI2S[ that I have done it once, I know I will for example delegate or pay for the HMWXVMFYXMSRSJ¾]IVWERHTSWXIVW-XXSSOQIEPSXSJXMQI[LMPIXLIVI[EW RIZIVIRSYKLSJXLIQ -[MPPEPWSWTIGMJ]JVSQXLIFIKMRRMRKXLIUYEPM½IH resources I need, such as the help of a carpenter for Værnedamsvej’s stage. This impacted the co-creative process as well. Indeed, co-creation has its own rhythm. It takes time to bond with the area and to include the whole neighborhood in the process. LOCAL & PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE
Although not always visible, it is clear from this project that temporary interventions do have permanent effects. Temporary build up permanent networks, foster awareness, offer local and practical knowledge and inspires people in the long-term. The most obvious permanent effect of this project is its impact on the local and larger social networks. Indeed, new social connections were created between the participants during the event itself, for example at the Summerfest planning meeting. But, it also had connected local residents to Frederiksberg Municipality itself during the walk Imagine the future, bridging in that way the local networks to the political setting. Furthermore, the realisation process created as well new connections between the necessary stakeholders. These connections are also preserved through the facebook page and websites. Temporary fosters awareness on the urban space as place, as a place XS WXE] XS TPE] XS QIIX 8LI [EPOW [IVI SR XLEX TSMRX ZIV] IJ½GMIRX Combined with the costume from the past, it not only impacted on the people participating in the walk, but also on the passerbys, whose curiosity about what was going on was awakened. The walk can be easily designed JSVWTVIEHMRKE[EVIRIWWSJEWTIGM½GQEXXIV The temporary tables of H.C Ørstedsvej illustrate as well how valuable it is to do a prototype in situ. A prototype in situ provides knowledge of the local area, its qualities and local networks as Frederiksberg’s Hidden Gems did; it also provides practical knowledge of the design, if it is working (as in the tables on H.C. Ørstesvej), or not (as in the portails of Peter Bangs Vej). Finally, the temporary design, like any events, offers a shared experience that can inspire over the long term through its documentation, such as XLMWVITSVX XLITLSXSWSVXLIJEGIFSSOTEKI -XGVIEXIWEVIEPP]IJ½GMIRX communication media. It happened. Therefore, it is possible to make it happens again or better. For example, Jens might do new walks together with Jannie from the Municipality., or some staff members of Betaniahjemmet enjoyed so much organising this event that they will do more in the future.

DESIGN A PLAN
SHAPE IN ACTION
Throughout the process, I encountered many challenges linked to the difference between traditional process and co-creation. Indeed, other kinds of skills are needed in many ways. Behind each challenge, one question kept coming to my mind: What is the role of an urban designer MRGSGVIEXMSR#-½REPP]KSXXLIERW[IV-XMWXLISRISJERYVFERGEXEP]WX an enzyme. An enzyme facilitates a chemical reaction and that is what an urban designer do during the co-creation process. While in the traditional process, the designer produces the design, in a co-creation process, the designer is more there to help the project be brought to life than to EGXYEPP]TVSTSWIXLI½REPHIWMKRFIGEYWIWSQISRIRIIHWXSOIITXLI project rolling. Indeed, co-creation is based on the active participation of the local citizens. However, they already have their own occupations to take care of. Only the urban designer is supposed to be focused on the urban space. So to ensure their engagement it is necessary to provide a process where they can easily join. This can mean to be the one going door to door, sending out news, and creating communication platforms (facebook). It is about doing the design with the community instead of applying a design/concept/masterplan to it. There are several elements of the design that I initiated myself. For example, the open street was my input because I saw the opportunity to actually enlarge the perspective, bring attention to the area and create more networks. I therefore invited the local residents to go out in the street with activities. However, what they prefered to do and what was more adapted to their needs was to do open houses and get people inside instead. In such a case, you have to accept to lose control over the design and let parts of the result become open to the unexpected. Here again, it is in contradiction with what you usually learn in urban design or architecture, where you are taught to be very precise in your concept and to control each aspect of it. You are taught to design precise and argumented masterplans, while the skill needed the most for co-

APPLYING A METHOD
creation is being able to shape the design in action, that is to say, modify the design along with the inputs from the locals, the opportunities and obstacles. It is a bit like sculpting the result from what exists. Co-Creation is more than a simple participation of the citizens, more than the consultation of their opinion on a design already done. For the urban designer, it is really becoming part of the community for a while. The time to discover with the community what could be done together, and how each stakeholder could contribute. Even if engaging people is essential in the process, co-creation is more. It is revealing the possibilities, how everyone could contribute and take part of the responsibility of the urban transfomation. When starting the thesis, one of the main question to answer was: How?. Which method are you going to apply and why. However, the best successes I had in the project were when I was welcoming the unexpected, being spontaneous and open to whatever could happen. The perfect example of this was, during the walk I too on March the 6th. A bit later, when more and more pressure came along due to the lack of resources and time, I could tell that my visits in the neighbourhood and my interactions were less rich. When I strated my project, I wanted to connect people together through action, through a temporary intervention. However, as a result, it is not only connections between locals, between locals and the Municipality of Frederiksberg, or even between the departments within the Municipality. What I did not expect wa that would personally bond with its residents and other actors.

The urban renewal will start this summer too and will be insiped through action and example.
The event has revealed extraordinary local resources in terms of variety of skills and activities as well as in terms of active networks. It also has brought focus on all the qualities of the neighborhood and attracted people attention. It also has shown an example of what can be done, creating a new local awareness ownership of the public space. They are EPWSE[EVIEFSYXXLIYVFERVIRI[EPERHEFSYXXLIRSXMSRSJ49&0-'2)77 of the street. A CO-CREATIVE URBAN RENEWAL
This project collects practical knowledge on co-creation.This will hopefully inspire the urban renewal process. It is answering their strategy and has shown how temporary co-creative interventions bring people together and awaken active participations. This engagement could grow into a real co-determination of the future of the neighborhood.
