Isango Ensemble presents

THE MAGIC FLUTE OCT 8-12, 2014 From Sir Ian McKellen to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, everyone is raving about Isango Ensemble, the South African company making its Southern California debut at The Broad Stage. Without a string section in site, Mozart’s fairytale opera about love and redemption is boldly re-imagined–South African style! Winner of the Olivier Award for “Best Musical Revival in London” and co-produced by Eric Abraham, Isango’s The Magic Flute is a dizzying array of marimbas, swirling dancers, and brightly patterned costumes. The twenty singers, many of who come from Cape Town’s surrounding townships, pack enough vocal energy to raise the roof, and leave you with “a rare sense of life-enhancing joy” (Sunday Times, UK). Be the first to experience this international box office hit when it makes its rare appearance stateside.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre presents

KING LEAR Nov 5-9, 2014 Direct from the UK, Shakespeare’s ultimate tragedy comes to The Broad Stage in a high-octane whirl of love and deceit, delivered with a thrilling physicality. Best known for his role on the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Joseph Marcell (King Lear) is joined onstage by a powerhouse cast for one of the deepest artistic explorations of the human condition. Produced by the brilliant and daring Shakespeare’s Globe, this King Lear will leave you breathless with its style, wit, and gusto. Shakespeare at The Broad Stage made possible by a generous gift from Linda and Michael Keston.

Box Tale Soup presents

Northanger Abbey DEC 5-Dec 13, 2014 [The Edye] The two-person British theater company transports us to a world of beautiful puppets and gothic romance in this award-winning adaptation of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey. The laughout-loud presentation about a novelobsessed young girl breathes fresh life into Austen’s work. With two performers, seven puppets, and a vintage trunkfull of handmade props and costumes, Northanger Abbey ignites the imagination and delights in every last drop of Austen’s humor and wit.

Chris Lemmon, son of Hollywood legend Jack Lemmon (Some Like It Hot, The Odd Couple), joins us at The Broad Stage for a new play written and directed by Hershey Felder. Chris, an actor and pianist, grew up immersed in the magic of Hollywood–Marilyn Monroe, Gregory Peck, James Cagney, Jimmy Stewart, and Shirley MacLaine were but a handful of the many stars who came through his childhood home. Based on the life of his Academy Award-winning father, this is a heartwarming story about a world famous dad and his son, performed in Felder’s signature musical-storytelling style. Support made possible in part by a generous contribution from Linda and Michael Keston.

BODYTRAFFIC thu / FEB 26, 2015 / 7:30PM

L.A.’s own BODYTRAFFIC is back

We know L.A. is an amazing place for the arts, so it is no surprise that a growing number of dancers and choreographers are taking root and thriving in a city as diverse and vibrant as our own. Case in point–Lillian Barbeito and Tina Finkelman Berkett, co-directors of one of the most talked-about dance companies nationwide. After sold out appearances last season, BODYTRAFFIC returns to The Broad Stage to showcase new work by emerging stars on the international dance scene, including new choreography by Victor Quijada and Hofesh Schecter. With its dynamic theatricality and confident athleticism, you can see for yourself why this L.A.-based dance troupe was recently named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch.”

DORRANCE DANCE: THE BLUES PROJECT

DIAVOLO

SAT / NOV 1, 2014 / 7:30PM

A local favorite and worldwide wonder, Diavolo returns to The Broad Stage for a weekend of gravity-defying performance that will stir audiences into a frenzy of excitement. Combining lyrical movement with risk-taking athleticism and large architectural objects, Artistic Director Jacques Heim re-imagines what dance is with a striking visuality. Set to Philip Glass’ Symphony No. 3, Heim’s latest creation, Fluid Infinities, includes 10 performers executing thrilling duets, trios, and perfect unisons around an otherworldly orb.

Michelle Dorrance is pure dynamite, blasting open our notions of tap with every stomp, stamp, and shuffle. Her marriage of tap and modern dance comes off as “edgy, seductive, and smart” (The Chicago Tribune), thrilling audiences during recent debuts at the Spoleto and Jacob’s Pillow Dance festivals. Her company will perform with Toshi Reagon and her live band for The Blues Project, featuring imaginative choreography, bluesy rhythms, and some of the most stunning tap artists dancing today.

Taj Mahal TRIO FRI / FEB 20, 2015 / 7:30PM With more than 40 years of music making and international touring under his belt, the unstoppable Taj Mahal swings by The Broad Stage for an evening of blues and roots music that spans continents and generations. The Grammy Award-winning musician’s insatiable appetite for sounds from across the globe–from the Caribbean, to West Africa, to the South–combined with his passion for Delta blues, front-porch finger-picking tunes, and funky soul sounds, makes for a concert of incomparable grit and sweetness.

BRUCE HORNSBY fri / April 10, 2015 / 7:30PM Bruce Hornsby’s work displays a creative iconoclasm that’s been a constant in the artist’s two-and-ahalf decade recording career. His commercial stock soared early on, when “The Way It Is”–the title track of his 1986 debut album–became one of the most popular songs on American radio. Despite his early mainstream successes, Hornsby has pursued a more personal, idiosyncratic musical path, focusing on projects that sparked his creative interest, including collaborations with the Grateful Dead, Spike Lee, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Bela Fleck, Pat Metheny, Bonnie Raitt and many more.

BLACK VIOLIN

FRI / MAR 20, 2015 / 7:30PM

The sounds of the Congo and New York unite for an Afrobeat mash up of the year! Zap Mama is Marie Daulne–a sonic stylist from East Zaire who blends urban, funk, and African music to make Grammy nominated tracks championed by the Talking Heads’ David Byrne. Daulne will be joined onstage by Antibalas, a Brooklynbased jam band that combines Latin funk with Afrobeat grooves. The group has collaborated with everyone from Questlove to Fugazi’s Ian MacKaye, and recently released its self-titled album on Daptone Records.

Kev Marcus and Wil B are Black Violin– a genre-busting act of high-energy, classically trained musicians who make a sonic party out of string instrumentals layered with jazz, R&B, and hip-hop beats. Having worked with Kanye West and 50 Cent, the duo has enough hip-hop swagger and seriousness to charm critics at SXSW (Voted “Top 5 New Bands” in 2013), Bonnaroo Festival audiences, and Broadway theatergoers alike. Joined onstage by a turntable artist, drummer, and cellist, “Black Violin works hard, but makes it all look like play” (The New York Times).

Pete McBride, Photographer and Filmmaker Proof that passion, hard work, and guts matter more than the cost of your gear or where you went to school, Pete McBride has taken pictures from the cockpit of a WWI-vintage biplane and the underside of an iceberg, working in over 70 countries. Named a “freshwater hero” by National Geographic for his work photographing and filming great rivers, he’ll offer unforgettable journeys down two of them.
