School Night Passes

Private rentals are available at times when no programs are scheduled. Reservations are accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.

Promotional school nights are held at the ice arena to encourage and develop interest in ice skating among youth.

The admission fee is $1 and skate rental, if needed, is an additional $1. School night passes are good for the Monday, Wednesday and Friday 4 - 5:30 p.m. or Friday 6 - 9 p.m. public sessions.

Ice Skating Lessons Learn-to-Skate & Advanced Skating Classes Learn-to-Skate and Advanced Lessons (Tots - Delta) are 30 minutes in length with a 15 minute practice. Practice ice time will be detailed on your activity registration receipt. Freestyle participants: Off-ice warm up will start 30 minutes prior to class time. Tennis shoes must be worn during warm-up. All Tuesday Freestyle classes are 45 minutes in length. There will be a short parent meeting the first night of each session. Ice Dancing Class

Off-Ice Conditioning Class

Ice Dancing is a discipline of ice skating that focuses on musicality. Proper posture, correct timing, clean footwork and individual expression will be fine-tuned during these classes. Skaters in the ISI Gamma level and above are eligible to enroll. Ice Dancing classes take place on Thursday evenings. The 23 dances correspond directly with USFS Ice Dancing descriptions.

Off-ice conditioning class helps skaters improve their overall fitness level. This class includes cardiovascular exercises and promotes muscular strength and endurance. An emphasis is placed on core body strength and agility, which is utilized most in figure skating elements. The class will also focus on jumping and spinning techniques. ISI Gamma level and above are eligible to participate. Class meets in the ice arena multipurpose room for 45 minutes.

Moves in the Field Prep Class This is a 30 minute class to help prepare skaters for the upcoming USFS test session. Instructors will help skaters learn and polish the moves in the field patterns and skills in their various levels. Low MIF: Pre-preliminary to Pre-juvinile High MIF: Juvinile to Senior Class will be held on Thursdays, August 24 and August 31. Class

Junior Instructors In order to assist staff instructors, junior instructors must attend an off and on ice training seminar. Participants must at least be entering 7th grade and have passed Freestyle 1. Attendance at monthly training meetings is required for all instructors. Attendance will factor into scheduling Jr. Instructor volunteers for classes. Private Lesson Policy Skaters interested in taking private skating lessons may contact the Ice Arena for information on skating professionals eligible to teach private lessons. Students receiving private instruction must pay admission to the public or freestyle session, as well as pay the instructor for the private lesson. Instructors interested in teaching private lessons must contact Rachel Bruemmer, Skating Director or Brent Echols, Assistant Skating Director at 634-6480 for eligibility, requirements and contact information. The Jefferson City Department of Parks and Recreation is not liable for any private instruction from a coach who is not registered through the Washington Park Ice Arena, a member of ISI, USFS or PSA and covered by liability insurance through one of the aforementioned national skating organizations.


Washington Park 27 Ice Arena Capital Classics Synchronized Skating Synchronized Skating is a fun and exciting sport for figure skaters. Team Sensations is a performance based team focusing on the fundamental elements of synchronized skating. Team Vibrant is an advanced formation team working toward transitioning to competitive skating teams. The teams will perform at least four times during the skating season: the Winter Recital, the Capital City Classic Competition at the Washington Park Ice Arena, the annual Ice Show (3 shows) and the Spring Recital. Team Vibrant will also attend at least one out of town competition in the St. Louis area. A team costume is required, but the cost of the costume is kept to a minimum. All skaters Pre-Alpha or Basic 1 and above are encouraged to sign up for this program. Ice Show Spotlight Tryouts

Jefferson City Figure Skating Club The Jefferson City Figure Skating Club (JCFSC) is an co-sponsor with the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Commission. Established in 1962, JCFSC is a non-profit organization and a member of U.S. Figure Skating. The club provides skaters of all ages and abilities an opportunity to develop figure skating skills through a variety of skating opportunities. Registration: Aug 24, 6 - 8 pm; for new and returning members; Classes begin Sept 7 JCFSC Events The Annual Ice Show provides JCFSC skaters the opportunity to combine the grace of figure skating with the artistry of the theater. JCFSC also offers a Family Skate Night for member families, an Exhibition Night for skaters to showcase their abilities, and other activities throughout the season. Classes JCFSC programming offers Moves in the Field, Freestyle sessions and Adult lessons. Snowplow Sam: Designed to help pre-school children develop coordination and strength on ice. Emphasis is on learning through games and fun activities. Learn to Skate USA: Introduces the fundamentals of the sport such as forward/backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns and Mohawks. Free Skate: Introduces many advanced moves built around single jumps and spins. Adaptive Skating Program: Introduces children with special needs to the rewards of ice skating. Licensed Physical Therapist on hand throughout class!

Parent Meeting: Tuesday, Aug 29 6:00 pm This meeting will provide details for the spotlight tryouts for the 56th annual Ice Show scheduled for March 2-4, 2018 Group Numbers: Participation is FREE for skaters who have enrolled in Jefferson City Parks and Recreation group lessons in September-December 2017. All levels from Tots to Freestyle will be represented. Some groups will be asked to provide costume items and/or pay a small fee to provide costumes and props for the show. The group number practices will be held on Tuesday evenings. If needed, we may also host an additional practice on Saturday. Information will be provided by email and on first night of each group lesson session.

Washington Park 28 Ice Arena Learn-To-Play Hockey

The newly redesigned Learn-to-Play program includes Skating and Stick Skills instruction with classes at all levels, from beginners to advanced travel team players. Each week’s lessons include mini-games and interactive practice-style drills, as well as direct instruction. NEW for 2017-18: adults ages 18+ may also register for hockey lessons!

Washington Park Ice Arena is home to University of Missouri Club Ice Hockey Team. Several games are scheduled throughout the season. Schedule is subject to change. Check mizzouhockey. wordpress.com for current game dates and times.

Full hockey equipment required: full equipment rental is available from the Mid-Mo Tigers youth hockey club for a $50 deposit; $25 is refunded when the equipment is returned.

If your child has never skated before, a Learn-to-Skate session is recommended before &/or concurrently with Learn-to-Play.

Broomball League Similar to ice hockey played without skates, Broomball uses brooms instead of hockey sticks to shoot a foam ball into the opponent’s goal. It is played cross ice and is designed to proivde a quality leisure experience for participants without being intensely competitive.

Jefferson City Speed Skating Club

The Jefferson City Speed Skating Club (JCSSC) and members are teamed with the Missouri Speed Skating Association (MOSA) and US Speed Skating (US). JCSSC allows members to participate in local practices and competitions throughout the skating season. For membership sign up for either of the practice schedules through Jefferson City Parks & Recreation. For more information call Kirk Bonnot at 573-338-3324 or Paul Rudder at 573-635-7995. Short track speed skating is an Olympic sport which promotes speed on ice in a competitive, fun, exciting, and safe manner. Any person of almost any age who has a desire to skate either in competition or for recreation can speed skate.
