ASA News Obituaries Jerry Allcott
Salers Junior Amelia Liebhart is winner of National FFA Diversified Livestock Proficiency
Dwight Jerome “Jerry” Allcott passed away Sunday, February 2, 2020, from natural causes, in Nampa, Idaho, at the age of 89.
Amelia Liebhart, New Boston, Missouri, 14 year ASJA member, was recognized by the National FFA Organization with the National FFA Diversified Livestock Proficiency Award during the 2019 National FFA Convention.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Charmain, children; Karen Allcott, Lance (Cyndi) Allcott, Linda (Mark) Pedersen, and Kim (Glenn) Whitaker, and four stepchildren: Rhonda (Wayne) Taylor, Terry (Michelle) Mote, Allen Mote, and Sheri Mote and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He retired as a Fire Captain with the Anaheim Fire Department in California after 27 years of service. He cherished his lifelong friendships and the brotherhood of the AFD looked forward to the yearly Fireman’s Retirement Pancake Breakfast. He served as President of the Idaho Salers Association for over 20 years. Salers were his favorite breed of cattle and his herd bulls are scattered to ranches far and wide. He purchased his first Salers cattle in 1984 and in 2006 was awarded the American Salers Association Honorary member award. He also actively promoted the Canyon County 4-H and helped and sponsored many kids to learn through 4-H programs. He had a deep love for his family and friends and thoroughly enjoyed fishing and eating oatmeal raisin cookies. Salers breeders throughout the continent will miss the passion of Jerry Allcott.
Northwest Missouri State University pre-vet major, Amelia Liebhart has dreams of returning to her family’s farm in New Boston, Missouri. “It’s my goal to carry on our family’s farming legacy. I want to be a large animal veterinarian and continue to raise livestock with my family,” Liebhart explains. Currently, Liebhart owns and manages a herd of nearly 50 Salers beef cattle and a small breeding tribe of Boer meat goats. Throughout middle and high school Amelia also raised a small farrow-to-finish hog operation. Along with goal setting, Liebhart’s livestock and her involvement in the FFA provided her with ample leadership opportunities. Through FFA, she participated in livestock judging and served as Bucklin FFA Chapter President. Actively involved in the American Salers Junior Association, she promoted her herd’s genetics exhibiting cattle at Junior National Shows, the Missouri State Fair and local fairs. She is the current American Salers Princess. Congratulations to Amelia Liebhart, as the National FFA Livestock Proficiency Award winner.
Ronnie Galen Reece Ronnie G. Reece, age 70, of Pikeville, Tennessee died, January 22, 2020, at his home. Ronnie graduated from Bledsoe County High School in 1967 and married the prettiest girl ever, Regina Smith, on July 27, 1968. He welcomed a daughter, Lehan, while serving in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam conflict. He obtained a BS degree in Engineering at Tennessee Tech University. He was owner of PES (Professional Engineering Services) and had a passion for farming. He ran Fall Creek Farms with a true love for the land and appreciation of the rich history of our area. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Regina Reece; his only daughter, Lehan; and his pride and joy, his grandson, Alex. Ronnie was very active in the Salers breed, purchasing his first livestock in 1991 and then joining in 1994. He served on the ASA board of directors from 2001 to 2008 and was president for two of those years. He dedicated much time an effort towards the preservation of the breed having been involved in numerous Salers tours and Junior National events. He will be missed by many.

ASA - From 2019 and Beyond Registry software upgrade to ILR2 The year 2019 seemed like a whirlwind here at the American Salers Association. As you know, ASA staff contracts our registry services for two additional breed associations, the North American South Devon Association and the American Aberdeen Association. All three breeds upgraded the registry software to the new International Livestock Records software (ILR2) as provided by the Agricultural Business Research Institute in Armidale, Australia. The ILR2 software is used by a multitude of cattle and other species as the registry software in over 30 countries. For those of you not familiar with software conversions, they can be challenging. ASA started with Aberdeen in early January. That breed is our smallest database and has the least amount of performance data, so it was the logical beginning to sort out programming modifications. We then moved to South Devon in early May, and followed with Salers in July. The new software does offer some great enhancements for Salers Breeders.
10
MARCH 2020
Upload and download registration and registry spreadsheets. For those operations not using a ranch management computer software system, Salers producers can now receive a comma delimited file (csv) to open in applications such as Excel or Google Docs to fill in registry and performance data. That file can then be uploaded direct to the registry system for much quicker and more accurate registry information. Members can then log on to their online account and retrieve PDF reports of processed data. Additional enhancements include quicker upload and download of ultrasound scanning spreadsheets and turn-key sale catalog download files. Additionally, the listing of coat color on all animals in the pedigree is now on papers and there are data enhancements to the dam production progeny reports.
Initial Data Implementation to International Genetic Solutions (IGS) for EPD Calculations In 2018, three Board’s of Directors, including the American Salers Association, the Salers Association of Canada and the North American South Devon Association, decided to pool our funds and together and join the database of International Genetic Solutions. Each organization was interested in getting the most accurate EPDS for each of our respective Breed Associations which would also include the availability of Genomic Enhanced EPDS for those animals having a 50K or greater genomic test on file. In early September 2019, ASA embarked on that journey with our first download of Performance and Genomic information from all of our respective groups through the newly established pipeline to IGS.
American Salers North American South Devon
Canadian Salers
Once the programing snags were identified and corrected, all of the organizations began weekly transmissions of data to and from IGS. The Salers data then entered the beta testing phase. Dr. Bruce Golden at Theta solutions had to add additional programing to the Bolt software to be able to properly identify both breeds of cattle. All available research regarding breed difference and identification was also used to be able to get where we are today. As I write this article, ASA has just received the first EPD/Genomic data from the Beta test run. We are nearly able to provide North American Salers producers the most accurate EPDs ever provided for our breed. We are now part of the largest beef cattle database in the world of nearly 19 million animals representing 17 different breed associations in the US, Canada and Australia. To date, over 230,000 genotypes are now included and the Salers DNA is a part of this. The more we know about our cattle, the better decisions we can make as cattle breeders. ASA will distribute information to all breeders upon completion of the evaluation of the final DNA run. EPDs will then be calculated in a weekly run for each organization.
Neogen Lab
For those breeders that assisted the American Salers Association by participating in the 50K sire genotyping project, you will now begin to see the rewards from your participation. The chart below lists the number of progeny it would take for each trait to reap the benefits of one genomic test. Exciting times are ahead for the Salers breed to now have this type of information for our seedstock and commercial producers. continued on page 12...
AMERICAN SALERS
11
2020 Estimated Progeny Equivalents An estimated progeny equivalent is the average number of progeny records it would take to see an equivalent change in accuracy from a genomic test. For example, if a non-parent animal is genotyped, the accuracy of his/her EPD is akin to an animal that has already produced 5 offspring with a carcass weight record (see table below). Over time, these estimates will change as statistical models are improved, the number of phenotypes increases, and the information from genomic data improves. Trait Calving Ease (Direct) Calving Ease (Total Maternal) Birth Weight Weaning Weight Yearling Weight Milk Stayability Docility Carcass Weight Marbling Rib Eye Area Back Fat
2020 Estimated Progeny Equivalents 25+ 4 22 25+ 25+ 19 15 25+ 5 8 6 8
ASA Enhancements for Seedstock Producers in 2020 Additionally, the ASA board of Directors has made some significant modifications to allow Salers seedstock producers more flexibility when it comes to the record keeping process. The ASA board has expanded Animal ID systems for Registry. Breeders now have a choice between three different methods to uniquely identify registered seedstock. 1. Tattoos Producers can still use a tattoo as a means of official identification. The tattoo still must include a number and the year letter but herd letters are now optional. 2. Tattoo Freeze Brand or Hot Iron Brand A brand including the number and the year letter in now also considered an official means of identification. 3. Electronic Identification (EID) A UDSA approved RFID Electronic Identification tag is now an official means of identification for the registration of Salers cattle. Producers will be required to obtain a Premise Identification number to purchase RFID EID tags through an official vendor. Producers can enter EID numbers on any and all electronic spreadsheets when registering cattle. A provision will be in place in case of a lost EID. Salers producers can now choose to utilize one or all three methods of identification for registered cattle. The ASA would like to encourage more than one method to better allow for a lost EID or an illegible tattoo or freeze brand. ASA is excited for the new opportunities that exist to better identify Salers cattle and the great leap ahead we will have made when we finalize the IGS Genomic Enhanced EPDs. It is an exciting time to be involved with a great breed of cattle that are more right for the industry and cattle producers everywhere. g

Bulls For Sale
They are out of Denver winners Or are out of the bulls that sired Denver winners For the past five or six years a Colmore Farms bred and raised heifer or bull has been named Grand or Reserve Champion in Denver. The 2020 National Show was no exception. JCGC Gunpowder 912G, an eleven month old bull, was named Reserve National Champion in January’s show. The judge proclaimed that he was “Astonishingly well put together”. Half interest and full possession of him are for sale. Aside from Gunpowder, I have a set of powerful yearling bulls (Purebred and Optimizer) for sale at private treaty here at the farm. They are also “Astonishingly well put together”
