Registration Reminders As you begin registering and turning in data on the 2020 calf crop remember the most recent enhancements to the registration rules. ASA has expanded approved means of identification from just a tattoo to four different options. Every registered Salers animal must be identified with at least one of the four approved identification methods. Tattoo Identification: A tattoo consisting of an individual animal identification (I.D.) number, and the appropriate year letter. Individual herd letters are no longer required but approved herd letters can be part of an animal tattoo. No two animals within a herd may carry the same tattoo with or without herd letters. Freeze Brand: A freeze brand consisting of an individual animal identification (I.D.) number and the appropriate year letter. Again, no two animals within a herd may carry the same tattoo with or without herd letters. Electronic Identification Tag: Identified with an electronic identification tag(RFID) where the identification number stored in the tag is recorded with the ASA. ASA would allow the recording of a replacement RFID tag pending official notification from the breeder that the tag was lost. The original identification number would still be retained.
ASA Year Letter Codes For your reference, these are the registration

Bugas Ranch
A Can-Do, Cooperative Approach
The Bugas family has been based in Fort Bridger, Wyoming, in southwest Wyoming, since the ranch was homesteaded in 1916 by George and Larry’s grandfather. The operation runs on a variety of rangelands, Larry points out that they “will run on everything from desert country on up to some mountain country.” The altitude ranges from 7600 feet up to 9500 feet or more. “We will summer on 4 different ranges. We are spread out quite a bit as it is not continuous. We’ll have to haul some cattle and other cattle we are able to trail to their range.”
AMERICAN SALERS
15
The ranch runs on private land as well as Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land. They work with the BLM on grazing their allotments and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department with their AccessYes program and have found both agencies very good to work with over the years. Bull selection plays a very important role in building their cow herd. They buy both Angus and Optimizer bulls to use on their Salers and Angus cross cow herd. “We want middle of the road genetics that do everything well and a balanced approach that doesn’t go to extremes. These cattle have to fill a lot of roles. We keep replacements, so they have to have all the things right on the cow side of the equation,” Larry emphasizes, “We need to keep everything in check with performance and birth weight. They have to be structurally correct because they need to last and stand up on our range. We can’t be having their feet go bad. And we want them to have a certain amount of eye appeal when we see them. But, they also have to be efficient and work on the feedlot side with good carcass characteristics.” When asked what Salers contribute to the operation, Larry states, “The Salers cattle just make such great momma cows. There are a lot of crossbreeding options out there, but they are one of the absolute best you can use. The carcass attributes are very impressive as well. When you combine that they have all the aspects covered that the ranch needs on the
16
SEPTEMBER 2020
cow side with the traits the feedlot and packer are looking for, it is a great combination.” The operation will sell some of the heavy steers early but keep the majority of the steers to run over on grass and sell as yearlings. The heifer crop will be put on feed at a feedlot in Riverton, Wyoming. They will select their replacement heifers and then a good middle cut of heifers will end up being sold as replacement heifers to other ranches. The lighter end of heifers will be spayed and run over as yearlings. All of the yearlings are sold on the Cattle Country Video out of Torrington. Larry says, “We used to feed all of our cattle all the way through at Magnum Feedyard in Colorado. They have ended up buying our yearlings on the video many years.” Recently, the ranch lost a grass lease and ended up feeding some of the cattle in Riverton with their replacements. The cattle converted at an impressive 5.8 pounds of feed per pound of gain and gained an outstanding 4.66 pounds average daily gain. The Bugas family is firmly entrenched in their community as pointed out in the accompanying article as a recipient of the AccessYes Award from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Larry states, “We are just fortunate to be able to be in the cattle business here in Wyoming. It is a great place to raise a family and kids. We all enjoy the outdoors, the cattle, riding horses, the wildlife we have here; this lifestyle is just hard to beat.” A family operation that has been in business since 1916 must be doing some things right. When asked what he would consider to be some important things to making a family ranching operation work Larry offered these three things to consider: 1) be willing to help each other; 2) communication; 3) organization. Sounds like some good advice for any cattle operation or any business when you think about it. g
Wyoming Game and Fish Department Recognizes Bugas Ranch The Bugas family, based in Fort Bridger, is the award recipient from the southwest quadrant. “The Bugas Ranch was homesteaded in 1916 and I can honestly say the history and integrity this family carries is deeply respected by their community,” said Countryman. He explained the Bugas Family allows access to nearly 4,000 acres of prime mule deer, elk, moose and antelope hunting in Uinta County and have been enrolled in the AccessYes Walkin Program since 2003. “Not only have they enrolled in the program, they have also encouraged 10 of their neighbors to join the program as well,” said Countryman. He noted five years ago, the family asked for his assistance in developing a second walk-in area. “As I was approaching neighboring landowners, this was not a hard sell,” he explained. “I typically explained who I was, what we were looking at doing and that the Bugas family was involved, and they would just stop me right there and join.” “I thought for a while, if I could put the Bugas name on snow cones, I could sell them in January. It was that easy,” Countryman laughed. Countryman explained with the help of the Bugas family, they have created two walk-in areas on the Bigelow Bench. “Both of these areas create a lot of opportunity,” he explained. “They consist of rolling hills mixed with sagebrush, aspen groves and dark timber and allow early season archery hunting through late season elk.” Countryman said while taking pictures he asked the family why they so freely open their property up to the public. “They looked me in the eyes and said very honestly ‘We are blessed with this land and we want the public to enjoy it too,’” Countryman said. “It is apparent this family wants to give back and their willingness to go above and beyond has shown through their actions.” – contributed by Hanna Bugas, editor, Wyoming Livestock Roundup

International Genetic Solutions Earlier this summer Salers breeders were sent the very first Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) created using the latest technology available in the worldwide Beef Industry. These 2020 EPDs are generated by International Genetic Solutions (IGS) powered by state-of-the-art BOLT (Biometric Open Language Tools) software (from Theta Solutions). Salers breeders now are part of the largest beef cattle database in the world of almost 20 million animals representing 17 different breed associations worldwide. This database represents the most cost-effective, the quickest, multi-breed, directly –comparable genetic evaluation in the word. “The Salers breed is pleased to be part of this historical effort, says Sherry Doubet, ASA Executive Vice President. This database represents the largest collaborative effort between breed associations to date. We all realize together we can offer better predictions to ourselves and our customers to accelerate genetic improvements at a much faster rate.” “We’ve come a long way since the first set of EPDs in 1989,” says Doubet. “Now, in addition to all the performance data contributing to the genetic evaluation and EPDs, we are able to include genomic DNA in the analysis to improve our accuracy of information even more. By providing you and your commercial customers with better genetic selection information, you can contribute the best genetics possible to improve the bottom line profitability to your customers. “ EPD Averages - 2019 EPDs compared with 2020 IGS Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation Main List Sires 2019 EPDs 2020 IGS EPDs

Being part of the multi-breed database shows the calving ease benefits of Salers cattle being better accounted for than in the single breed analysis. Again, this will be very useful in marketing Salers genetics to commercial producers to include them into their crossbreeding programs. The growth performance numbers of WW (Weaning Weight) and YW (Yearling Weight) and Milk and STAY (Stayability) EPDs change only slightly from the previous EPD numbers. Seedstock producers and Commercial customers will see very little adjustment to their previous selection criteria when looking at these EPD numbers. The carcass data EPDs see some shifting both up and down and that may continue as new enhancements continue to be made to the IGS Carcass evaluation. Currently, the average EPDs for REA (Ribeye Area), MARB (Marbling) and BF (Backfat) all shift in a positive direction, while CWT (Carcass Weight) becomes smaller. Again, as being part of a multi-breed database and having the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center breed adjustments factored into the breed differences, these changes would be expected. ISG also offers a more frequent EPD evaluation. EPDs are now computed on a weekly basis. All data submitted by Friday will be analyzed with new EPDs available on Monday. The American Salers Association is proud to be a part of the International Genetic solution team. The more we all work together the more we learn about the beef industry and our place in it. This is probably the first time in history when you find breed associations working together to this extent for a common goal. As a Salers breeder you should continue to make use of all available tools to you for improvement and IGS is certainly one of those tools. For more information on IGS and other tools offered through the IGS program go to www.internationalgeneticsolutions.com.

SEPTEMBER 2020
At one of the most picturesque settings in the mountain west, you’ll see some beautiful Salers cattle grazing the slopes below the rugged Ragged Mountains near Somerset, Colorado. Here, Gary and Gail Volk have summered their registered Salers cattle for the last 38 years. The ranch dates back to 1911 when Gary’s grandfather homesteaded here while working at the coal mine. Gary says, “There is no other cow on this earth that can do all the things a cowman needs them to do like a Salers cow. I just can’t say enough about the merits of
AMERICAN SALERS
Salers cattle and their contribution to making a profit in the cattle industry.” Like most western ranchers at that time, Herefords were the base of the cow herds for years. Gary recalls, “About 1969, Dad (George) realized that the 650-700 pound, 18-month old steers off of fall pasture were not paying the bills.” Exotic genetics were being imported and hybrid vigor and more pounds were the buzz words in the industry. “We tried them all. We got more pounds, but calving ease and calf vigor were becoming a problem.” In 1979, they started fattening their own calves to sell as

“We got those Salers influence females into the herd and that is when we really reaped the benefits,” says Gary.
locker beef. They witnessed finished beef cattle that looked alike would see a $300 swing in value after processing into retail cuts to the final consumer. Yield, cutability and cost of gain varied greatly. Meanwhile, fullblood Salers steers entered by Roy Moore were winning the National Western Stock Show Fed Beef and Carcass Contest several years in a row. The Salers steers were producing carcasses that were Choice, Yield Grade 1 and 2’s, with 65%-68% yield from live weight to carcass weight. Their cow herd needed these kinds of results along with much needed consistency. It was the fall of 1982 that they called the Canadian Salers Association. “In a few days, Dad and I enjoyed a free trip to the Regina Show to learn about the commercial merits of Salers cattle first-hand. Phil Tetrault, who imported the first Salers bull to North America, Vailliant, and an impressive set of females, made sure we saw all the Salers cattle in the area. The testimony we heard over and over was overwhelming, Salers were the right exotic we should try back in Colorado.” Unfortunately about that same time, the owner of Hidden Valley Ranch, Joseph Drisdale, had lost his wife and was going to be selling his herd of Salers cattle. The herd consisted of 3 imported French fullblood cows, 8 fullblood females that were born in Canada, 8 purebreds and 4 percentage females and 5 fullblood bulls. Overnight, the Volks were in the Salers business and still are 38 years later. Gary and a friend headed the ranch semi to Canada in mid-December to bring back the herd of Salers cattle. It was quite a trip with several challenges along the way, including running the semi out of fuel just north of Great Falls, Montana, at 10:30 at night. All in all, they were able to make it home on Christmas Eve. Gary remembers his sister, Margo Keiser “greeting the cattle off the trailer after the 3-day ride to be wished Merry Christmas by a kiss on her nose by the import cow Lucette. She was just a real peach of a cow.” Gary credits that trip with the start of it all. “We bought some more bulls after that trip. We were running about 2000 mother cows at the time and we had bought 10 Salers bulls. Each of these bulls had a big group of cows for 2 heat cycles. I would bet those Salers bulls bred 75% of those cows. We had never seen anything like it. They would breed a cow and then be on to the next one.” In January of 1983, they took herd bulls, Lincoln and Go Star 2K, to the Stock Show and put them on display. The interest was spectacular for someone who had never been
28
on the promotion end of the purebred business. “I’m not sure we really knew what we were doing at the time, but we sure had a good time and the cattle were well received.” The results from that first set of calves from the 2000 mother cows pretty much sold them on Salers. Those calves were born unassisted, were vigorous at birth and got up and nursed right after they hit the ground. George and Gary were impressed. That fall the calves were heavy and very uniform. At the time, they didn’t realize the best was yet to come. “We got those Salers influence females into the herd and that is when we really reaped the benefits,” says Gary. The ranch has gone from having an annual sale to now selling everything by private treaty. Gary likes the ability to talk with the customer and see what they are looking for in their bulls. It has worked well over the last 11 years, “It was hard to be able to visit with everyone on sale day to address their specific needs. Now we can. We’ll be able to work with the volume bull buyers to come up with a solid group of bulls that fit their price range, where they may have had trouble filling that order in a sale. Our customers like the low pressure private treaty setting. Whatever their bull needs are, 1 to a pot load, we will work with them to get them what they are looking for,” says Gary. The customers like the approach and Gary works with them to deliver the bulls when they are ready for them. So far it has been a win-win for both parties. While the ranch doesn’t PAP (Pulmonary Arterial Pressure) test the sale bulls, their environment runs from 5,500 feet at the lowest point, 7,200 feet in elevation at the homestead, on up to 10,000 feet on the Forest Service allotment, and they have never had an issue with brisket disease. Gary says while some commercial cattlemen are seeing up to a 15% death loss due to brisket disease, and he’s heard up to 30% in one case, they haven’t had a case in the 38 years of running Salers cattle. “We are willing to guarantee any of our bulls will pass a PAP test when the buyer takes them home to their operation, we are that confident in our cattle. All the bulls are semen tested and ready to go when we deliver them,” Gary confirms. “When we had the chance to go to France and see the town of Salers and where these cattle originated from, it is clear why they have done so well here. The mountainous topography where they originated helps explain why they are such great foragers and utilize the range. Many breeds want to be ‘bottom dwellers’ and spend all their time right by the water hole on the riparian area,” Gary continues. “No
SEPTEMBER 2020
doubt about it, these cattle are terrific at utilizing all of the range. We have customers that used to have to push cattle off their riparian areas every day up into higher country. The next morning, the cattle would be back down and they would have to do it all over again. When they started using Salers cattle and were keeping replacements, they were amazed at how the cattle spread out, stayed off the bottoms and grazed all of the range.”
still have several cows in the herd that are producing a calf every year and they are 18 years old.” The Volks are still sold on Salers. g
Their “No Frills Outfit” maintains that the cows need to be raised to work for the commercial producer. That lack of pampering contributes to the efficiency of their cow herd Gary says and his customers vouch for how well the cattle hold up for them. Reproductively, “it’s just hard to beat them. We’ve tried other breeds before we got into Salers, and a few since, and we just never found anything that measures up. They offer calving ease, maternal aspects and longevity that just can’t be beat and that allows you to build a cow herd that will stay with you for a long time. We

American Salers Junior Association
Junior National Show
Everybody at Salers Nationals was “Seeing Clearly” while in Colorado. The 2020 American Salers Nationals took place June 14-19th at the Logan County Fairgrounds in Sterling, Colorado. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, things were just a little bit different this year. Social distancing kept us from doing some of the fun activities we have in the past. But the pandemic didn’t stop us from having a good time, making new friends and just enjoying each other’s company. To start off the week, we had a showmanship clinic. Junior members listened to professor Jason Beltz, a representative for Sullivan Supply, to show the proper way to show in the ring and the
proper equipment to have during showmanship. The juniors could bring their animals to the show ring and practice some of the techniques that Jason shared with them. Hands on training is always helpful and a great way for kids to remember information! That evening, we had a BBQ Social. This gave us a chance to socialize with people from other states. Following supper, the Junior Board had a scavenger hunt for the members. The board members had questions for the groups to ask and then figure out. First one back was the winner! Fun was had all around The next Showmanship day!! Boy did the members make it hard for the judge. There was good competition in all divisions. As the week went on, the temperature kept heating up, and so did competition. Each class and division had tough, young competitors. Whether it would be kids practicing their speeches in the barn or getting advice for the fitting contest, they were always up to something productive.

SEPTEMBER 2020
This year, we had educators from the North Eastern Junior College, there in Sterling, come to the fair grounds and present a talk on Animal Reproduction. Juniors were able to do hands on activities which included touching and seeing the reproductive tracts of cattle. It was very interesting and all the juniors had a fun learning experience! Before you know it, it’s the end of the week and the most important day, Show day!! Everywhere you looked in the barns there were good cattle all around. But before that, we had some business to discuss at our annual meeting. During the meeting we talked about ways to improve the national event for next year. Our facebook page and our website are up and going. These are 2 great places to keep up with what is going on in our organization. Social distancing was stressed during the show by all juniors, parents and guests present. The new Salers Queen for the 2020-2021 year is Sholoh Neal, Jr. Princess is Mattie MAckee, Jr. Miss is Ashley Schrag and Little Miss is Chesney Doubet. Without the support of the sponsors for the 2020 Salers Nationals it wouldn’t have been possible to have this show. The AJSA Board is accepting proposals until September 1. 2020 Idaho National Salers Tour We then stopped in front of the Idaho Forest Group Mill and learned just how important the timber industry is to Idaho. This mill, and others owned by the same company in the region, provide the majority of lumber for Home Depot, Lowes and Menards stores. Just to add a bit of humor, the leftover woodchips from the Lewiston factory are shipped directly into the Clearwater Paper plant next door which is one of the largest toilet-paper factories in the world.
The State of Idaho did a fantastic job of hosting the 2020 National Salers Tour. A livestock outing was just the event needed as producers from 14 different states were in attendance. In addition to excellent registered Salers cattle, the group also had the opportunity to view commercial Salers and Salers cross cattle. Livestock exhibits were provided by Ahtanum Valley Salers , Yakima, Washington; Lyman Creek Salers, Rexburg, Idaho; McCoy Livestock, Buhl, Idaho; BCW Salers, Buhl, Idaho and Camas Prairie Salers, Reubens, Idaho. Commercial livestock were provided by McCann Ranch and Livestock and Willson Lowe Farms, Reubens, Idaho and Rick and Tina Woods. The tour kicked off from Lewiston, Idaho, near the Port of Lewiston which is the most inland seaport with a total distance of 465 miles to the Pacific Ocean. The hotel view allowed a guest to see the Clearwater River merge into the Snake River and may have made a person think back to the Gold Rush days of the 1860’s which actually created the town of Lewiston. Initially, our tour bus headed up through the smoke to Steptoe Canyon which provided our first look at the dramatic altitude changes in the region. Fortunately, that was the last of the smoke.
Following lunch everyone learned about the Nez Perce Tribe though a tour of the park and had a taste of the humble beginnings of Mickey Mouse and Dumbo, whose ideas came about when Walt Disney met his wife in the area. The Reubens Community Center, which was the high school until 1962, provided to be an excellent venue for the Level Above The Clouds Foundation Female Sale. We want to thank all of the donors and buyers for investing in the future of Salers by providing funds to the Foundation. Day two brought more beautiful scenery and excellent livestock and conversation. Lunch was provided by the Keuterville Pub and Grub, which if you could see through the trees, sits right above the Salmon River at 4,160 feet above sea level. Though, I don’t work for the Lewiston, Idaho, Chamber of Commerce, it would be very easy to spend an enjoyable vacation in this area. The Lewiston, Idaho, area has beautiful views, excellent fishing, unlimited timber and paper, an ammunition factory, excellent farming, good cattle ground and best of all - toilet paper!

Contemporary Groups…
You can’t have accurate EPDs without them By Sherry Doubet, ASA Executive Vice President
Now that ASA is an official team member of the International Genetic Solutions group, with an even larger performance database today is probably a good time for a refresher on contemporary group designations. Perhaps the most important component of data submission and therefore EPD accuracy is accurate contemporary grouping. After many years’ worth of tracing down breeder questions relative to EPD changes, most times we find that inaccurate contemporary groupings are the cause of the issue. Let’s review what a contemporary group is relative to genetic evaluation. A contemporary group consists of animals that have been exposed to the same external environment. ASA currently defines this in four, soon to be five, automatic contemporary group splits: 1 – Same sex 2 – Born in the same herd and season (within 90 days) 3 – Managed together and treated alike 4 – Have the same weigh date And soon 5 – All Calves born from first-calf dams Items 1, 2,4 and 5 are self-explanatory. Defining and discussing “managed together and treated alike” is the objective of this article.
Managed Together and Treated Alike Most contemporary group errors are made when submitting weaning data in the management code and management group sections of ASA forms. Management code details are noted first. Please remember to note any designations when submitting performance data.
ASA Management Group The second section contains optional management group information. Most generally this is where the confusion comes in. If one group of cows are run on irrigated pasture with exceptional forage resources and another group of cows are grazing native prairie grass there will probably be a difference in the weaning weights of the calves. Therefore, the calves in each group should be reported as being in different management groups even if they have the same weigh date. For example, the group code could be 1 for irrigated pasture and 2 for native prairie grass. Commonly, breeders think calves can be grouped together even if they were raised in different pastures. Most think that differences in “prairie grass” pastures on the same ranch are minimal. Studies have shown that pastures next to each other that visibly look the same can still cause large discrepancies in weaning weights among the calves in those different pastures. Inaccurate submission of the data from these two pastures as the same group causes negative and inaccurate effects on the EPD of both the calf and the entire pedigree. For example, the group code in this case could be 1 for one of the pastures and 2 for the other pasture, even if the weigh dates are the same. To most producers larger contemporary groups are perceived to equate to more accurate EPDs. This is true in reference to higher calculated accuracy values such as are listed by each trait in the Sire Summary. If larger groups should be split into smaller groups due to pasture differences, the EPDs you generate by doing this will be more informative and more accurately relate to the true differences.
Contemporary Group Example A breeder has weaning weights on 15 bull calves each from three different sires. Each sire had 5 calves in three different pastures. If we
ASA Management Codes 1 – no creep, raised by natural dam 2 – received creep feed, raised by natural dam 3 – fed for show, within show/sale group 4 – embryo transfer 5 – irregular, such as twin, sick, injured
40
SEPTEMBER 2020
ignore the rules and group all 45 calves together, it is true that the calves’ EPDs will have a slightly higher calculated accuracy than if we went by the book and sorted them into 3 contemporary groups. On the other hand, grouping all the calves together will actually lower their factual accuracy compared to placing the calves in 3 groups. As a breeder we do see value in knowing that a sire can perform across multiple different environments and therefore understand that the accuracy value is going to increase due to the performance in the three pasture groups as oposed to a single-contemporary group situation. This example helps us remember that we are trying to identify the genetic merit in an animal as opposed to the difference our environment causes. Once you think about it is simple. Just doing the simple things right will enhance the accuracy of your EPDs and the EPDs of other breeders using the same genetics. Just take a few minutes and double check your data before sending it in.
Common Pitfalls when turning in performance information •
Don’t bias ratios, take weights on the entire crop – not just the top 50%
•

Longevity is the ultimate goal as a seedstock cattle producer. Genetics that last mean they have passed the tests for the traits that matter most. Longevity at Elm Creek Ranch requires fertility, sound feet and calves that perform. OPP Black Lady 9R, pictured top right, in August 2020 at 15.5 years old and confirmed bred for the 15th time within the first 21 days of breeding. She continues to influence the Salers breed with herd bulls such as OPP Saber 847U, OPP West Star 938W, OPP Eliminator 038X and outstanding daughters. OPP Black Lady 53S, pictured bottom right, in August 2020 at 14.5 years old and confirmed bred for the 14th time within the first 30 days of breeding. She is the Dam of Salers herd bulls such as ECR Effective 719E of 53S, OPP Valor 351A and multiple daughters in the ECR herd.
