2019 Commercial Producer of the Year

The Gary Mehling Family by Jim Doubet Situated in southeastern Wyoming is a family run operation that has been using Salers cattle since 1986. Started by Gary and his wife Kathy, along with their son, Kelly, and daughter, Jamie, they have been avid users of Salers cattle. This past fall, Gary passed away unexpectedly, but the family plans to continue using Salers genetics in the operation. “Dad was looking for something better. He had tried a couple breeds after using Shorthorn for quite a while. Those cows were working pretty well and then it seemed like they kind of bred the muscle out of them,” son Kelly recalls. They tried a couple different breeds back in the early ‘80’s trying to find that perfect mix of enough performance without getting calving problems in the calves, and yet, they wanted to have a tremendous herd of cows that were maternal based. They tried a couple breeds with more muscle and discovered some lethargic calves that didn’t want to get up. “It was about 3 years later that Dad found what he was looking for,” Kelly remembers. “I remember dad coming across the Soderberg Brothers that used to run registered Salers cattle. Dad worked as a water commissioner for the state of Wyoming and Soderbergs were having some water issues. Dad loved to visit and it wasn’t long before they were talking about cows. He got a tour of some of those cows and just fell in love with one of their very best cows. He came home excited about what he had found in the Salers cattle. We bought our first Salers bull from them back in 1986,” says Kelly.

10

JANUARY 2020

“We are always working to keep the cattle moderate framed and they have to be easy-calving with good gain for our environment” Seeing how Gary traveled a lot with his job, it was important that the cows could pretty much take care of themselves and calve on their own. Kathy remembers, “He would leave early and I would go out and write down the numbers on what had calved that day and make the ear tags so they were ready when he got home so we could go out and tag them that night.” All along the way, it was important to have good dispositions. “We had the kids helping us back then and now we have grandkids helping, so it has always been important to have good mannered, gentle cattle.” That has paid off when they get ready to sell their calves at the sale barn in Torrington. Kelly tells about when they get ready to sell their calves, “Someone will always come out every year and look at the calves and they always comment about how gentle they are.” It wasn’t long after that initial purchase that they bought some top bulls from Middleswarth Ranch. Kelly ended up helping them at the National Western Stock Show in 1997 and he called up Gary and told him about this outstanding bull that was there that he needed to buy. The bull was for sale private treaty in the Pen Show. It was then that the bull, 6M Extraordinaire, found his way back to Wyoming.

The kids used to show at the Wyoming State Fair and they started showing their Salers steers there and met Jim Wilson of Thermopolis. “Dad loved to talk cows with Jim at the State Fair. His daughter, Billie Jo, was showing and it seemed like she would almost always be Champion and one of us would be Reserve in the Salers steer show,” says Kelly. They always enjoyed making their way to Denver to the Stock Show. “It was there that Dad met up with the Werth family and they started buying bulls there in the early 2000’s and then the MacDonald Ranches in the mid2000’s, continuing to buy bulls at both places today. “We are always working to keep the cattle moderate framed and they have to be easy-calving with good gain for our environment,” stresses Kelly. Kathy says, “Gary always wanted some butt in the bulls that he bought, muscle was important. He pretty much considered it a family vacation when we would go to buy bulls. He always wanted to get there and look the night before the sale and then we would get out there sale morning and look them over again.” Several times they bought the top end bulls that breeders were keeping a semen interest in. “He would spend hours studying the bull sale catalogs that came. It was common to see him continued on page 12...

AMERICAN SALERS

11

sitting in the chair in the evening marking his catalog for the top bulls. He wasn’t much of a computer guy, but he began studying the videos we would get on the different sales. He always had his top 5 or so bulls picked out before he showed up to the sale,” Kelly adds. Gary Werth says that, “I have really enjoyed the Mehling family as customers. You could count on Gary showing up the night before the sale and you’ll see them going through the bulls until dark. They are always studying those top end bulls. They want them thick and stout with performance in a moderate frame and they still have to have calving ease. A couple years ago they bought our high selling bull. I have always looked forward to visiting with them at the sale.”

On behalf of the American Salers Association, we are pleased to recognize the Gary Mehling Family as the recipient of the Commercial Producer of the Year. “It’s been a family run business since my dad started,” Jamie states, “we all have some cows that we run together today. Dad would have really have liked to have been here today for this recognition from a breed that meant so much to him. I can’t thank you enough.” g

Will MacDonald knows first-hand, “I have visited with them at our sale and they always have lots of things marked in the catalog. Sometimes, I think they may know more about the bulls than I do,” Will chuckles.

Birth Weight Update for the Approaching Calving Season Research study finds hoof tape correlates highly to scale weights but exhibits less variation. By Jackie Atkins, Ph.D., International Genetic Solutions There has long been a stigma against using hoof circumference for estimating birth weight;however, there are pragmatic reasons why hoof tape is a sound alternative. Collecting scale weights at birth can be difficult for breeders due to labor constraints. It is known that some breeders are using hoof tape to esti-mate birth weight. Recently, IGS and consulting scientists, Drs. Bruce Golden and Matt Spangler, delved into a number of potential improvements to the genetic evaluation of growth traits including how to handle hoof tape records as a measure of birth weight in genetic evaluation. Dr. Golden started looking at large numbers of records from herds known to use hoof tape or known to use scale weights. Golden used over 7,000 hoof tape records and 15,000 scale weight records and found hoof tape and scale weights have a high genetic corre-lation (0.92). As expected, hoof tape estimates for birth weight had less variation in the records resulting in hoof tape measurements with fewer extremely

light or heavy birth weight estimates compared to scale weights (see graph). What does this mean for seedstock breeders? Scale weights remain a gold standard for birth weight measurements. However, hoof tape measurements look like a very reasonable alternative. The Beef Improvement Federation recently came out with the following statement. “BIF recommends that organiza-tions responsible for recording performance data require breeders who use a hoof tape to record birth weight to indicate that they have done so. Remember, with both measurements, the economicallyrelevant trait is Calving Ease. The genetic correlation between hoof tape measurements and calving ease is not yet known but given the high correlation to scale weights, it is likely to be similar to the correlation between birth weight and calving ease.

As a reminder, for ALL phenotypic records, if animal measurements are missed for any reason, it is far better to leave the records blank than to fill in the blanks with guesses. Inaccurate records introduce noise to the genetic prediction that reduces the ability to assess the genetic merit of these and related animals. Stay tuned for more updates on other improvements in the growth traits predictions in the IGS Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation.

22

JANUARY 2020

“If at all possible, it is important to have the same person taking the measurement every time. Make sure cold weather has not caused hooves to swell before you measure. As with any other performance trait measurement, try to be consistent,” says Stan Sayler, Hebron, ND, Elm Creek Ranch and long-time user of hoof tapes.

Tips when using a hoof tape: 1. Measurements should be collected within 24 hours of birth. 2. Place the tape around the coronary band (where the hoof meets the hide) of a front hoof, tighten, and read the measurement.

3. There are two sides to the tape. One for bull calves and one for heifers.

Dollars and Sense... The Amazing Salers Influence Dollars Up O ne of our Wyoming customers reports $160,000 in added returns as a

result of their 9% increase in breed-up since using Salers and Optimizer bulls and the Salers influence in their cow herd. They run calves over as yearlings and see a 7-9% increase in breed-up, depending on the year, from what they used to get before. I hear those results again and again from our customers –

$160,000 Dollars and that Makes Sense The Salers and Optimizer fertility is just one of the traits many of us take for granted, but for some, they never knew it could be this good! Give us a call (303) 638-2625 and we’ll be glad to discuss our Private treaty bull offering and a select group of females we have available.
