Even sunglasses, someone, somewhere wants those glasses even more than you do and will not hesitate to take them clean off of your head in a crowd. You may be cringing at the thought of such blatant crime, but remember this IS a social gathering for sometimes up to 100,000 people, unfortunately thieves will always work these places. Don’t give them the satisfaction and leave it at home.

DRINK WATER

Sounds like a dull one, but people underestimate how important this action is during a festival. Even if it’s 10 C, if you are walking on average 6 miles per day then you need to be drinking on average 2 litres more than your average consumption.

Assuming everyone your with is a part of the 21st century, you will of course have the gift of a long battery lasting mobile phone, however what you are not prepared for is signal problems. When you gather lots of people who want to use the same s ervice provider in a small radious of each other, you get problems.

Prioritise Bands

There’s no point in going to a smelly field in the middle of nowhere with a tent for a home if you’re not going to be getting your moneys worth. Make a loose itinerary for each day, so you can see who clashes and where abouts you have to be in the area.

terreity It’s cold and raining in Southampton right now, the ques of fans waiting outside The Joiners Arms is getting bigGer by the minute, no-one is deterRed by the fact that it is now below freEzing outside and there is stilL two hours before doOrs open to witnesS one of the most influential young metal bands in the Country right now. TerReity have just finished a headline tour, topPing thirty threE dates in seven countries. We have guitarist Mark Slobodian spilLing the beans on tour antics, losing faith and the REAL reason behind the bands change in line up.

MARK SLOBODIAN Sat  in  a  ‘cosy’  tour  bus,  I  am  joined   by  lead  guitarist  Mark  Slobodian   who  is  essential y  the  reason  for   the  success  following  numerous   line  up  changes  and  a  chance   of  complete  abandon  this  time   last  year.  He’s  back  from  tour  and   more  ready  than  ever  to  destroy   the  UK  with  a  bigger  and  badder   attitude. For such a new band, you seEm to have gathered quite the female folLowing... ‘Haha, really? i hadn’t noticed. Their probably here for Sylosis! We’re quiet boys really, we’ve all got girlriends back home so we really are here just for the music.’

So you’re telLing me the Rock N RolL lifestyle doesn’t hapPen? ‘Oh well i wouldn’t say that, we do like the odd drink, or twenty. We’ve just finished the last leg of our european tour, finishing in Germany and to say it was messy would be an understatement. Let me tell you this, Jagermeister, Jack Daniels and Red wine is an awful mix. I had to be busted out of Jail after thinking it would be hilarious to piss on a lampost in the middle of a high street, little did i know this is highly illegal in Germany. Waking up in a jail cell was accompanied by the worst hangover of my life. Never again!

This is a far cry from the Catholic boy he was raised in Reading, Berkshire. A regular church goer, Mark was urged to spend his time musically rather than getting involved with girls and experinmenting as a teenager.

“I’m not  striving  for   perfection,  i’m  striving   for  change  and  that’s   why  our  music  is  so   fresh”

Metal more than anything is a brutal genre of the industry. There’s always going to be a band that has a smiliar name, or claims that they’re guitar riffs feature in 0.10 seconds of one of your songs. It’s hard to be in it to win it when you’re doing this full time let alone part time. However it can be a nice distraction when the politics of line ups gets too heavy. Stick at what you want, no matter how far away it seems. Two years ago i didn’t dare dream that i would be playing in front of 5,000 people. It sounds cheesy, but never ever give up. If you try you could possibly get it, if you don’t then it’s never gonna happen, then where are you gonna be?

You’re a grade 8 in numerous intruments including drums, guitar and piano was your strict Catholic upbringing responsible for this?

You come from one of metal’s breEding grounds, did you find it difFicult to be taken seriously as an original band after an influx of similar sounding bands?

I’ve always had a passion for music, and i believe even without my parents’ influence that this direction was always where i was going to be heading. Whenever i mastered an instrument as a child i would put it down and ask what was next, i’m not striving for perfection, i’m striving for change and that’s why our music is so fresh.

Of course it was hard to get other people to take us seriously, the key is to have something distinctive about yourself and your band. I think our sound can be mistaken for Sylosis or Teraki sometimes, but that’s just because we’ve been playing togethor for years. As long as you know what makes you different, it will show through your live shows and your studio recordings.

Is that why you can’t keEp a band member for more than a couple of months?

(laughs) No that’s not why, unfortunately due to other commitments it has been difficuly for certain people to remain in the band. People always ask why we don’t just find members that will be committed, but in my experience the best muscians are always the most distracted. Although Mark is a budding musician he hasn’t forgotten about his education and even juggles a music degree in his Reading home town. Studying Graphic design, Mark often has to compromise University work with pursuing his dream. He later reveals that his reasons for further education remain in the hands of his parents, who are not exactly supportive of his metal loving, binge drinking attiutude.

What advice would you give to other Uni students who want to break in to the metal scene?

“Waking up  in  a  jail  cell  was   accompanied  by  the   worst  hangover  of  my  life.   Never  again!” What is the bands plan now you’ve finished wreaking havoc in the rest of Europe? We’ve got some pretty exciting studio time booked for the end of the year in our hometown, so we’re pretty stoked to have Christmas at home. Hopefully we’ll start touring again sometime in spring, just a UK tour mind, i think it’s safe to say we won’t be going back to France! Art House

Soul Bowl

If you like art, music, crafts or more importantly delicious organic vegetarian/vegan food then make time in your day between eleven and five (and eight on a Wednesday!) Than I implore you to dive in to Art house. Situated at the top of town, above bar street, the location is of the cafe looking over to beautiful green park really sets up the standard. Food is cooked to order and is served piping hot with service with a smile, which is quite the surprise considering all staff at Art House are volunteers. From the wide range of fair trade vegetarian food my eyes were drawn to the Greek Mezze a traditional mix of homemade hummus, juicy olives, cream cheese and stuffed vine leaves laid on a bed of warm pita. The food itself is fresh and inventive, which reflects on the surroundings in the Café. The prices are fair and ideal for strug-

Situated almost directly opposite the guildhall, this restaurant is suited to the more alternative person. For example if you like heavy rock music or dub step to accompany your meal at very acceptable prices, then this place may be the one for you. The decor is relaxing and warm, perfect for picking up a mince pie and a hot chocolate this Christmas, with deep carmine red painting the walls. This cosy little gem offers you home made bean nachos for as little as the change in your pocket. The falafel burger for less than a fiver is fresh and delicious, using home grown vegetables which make the world of difference in cooking. The cafe may be new but it has clearly established a regular customer relationship. Although the quality of food is fantastic, the atmosphere at Soul Bowl is what really sells the place. The chilled out vibe sets the scene for a more student orientated hang out.

gling students. Offering a cheap range of ‘light bites’ including Maize tortilla chips, and even their own spin on classic beans on toast. If original local artwork is your thing than do not pass up this opportunity of exceptional food and psychedelic experience. The staff were friendly, the decor was amazing and more importantly the food was exceptional.

Restaurant of the week! Indian Melody 25 High Street

This new vegetarian, Indian restaurant state that they are ‘Hampshire’s first and only authentic vegetarian South Indian restaurant.’ If this isn’t enough to catch your eyes, then I don’t know what is. Location is on 25 High Street, next to a string of meat eating Indian restaurants, this place has some strong competition. However as soon as you step in to the restaurant you are greeted with authentic South Indian décor, beautiful colours, and a grand grandfather clock which the owner claims is over one hundred years old. The open kitchen is incredibly inviting and is a nice change to be able to see the food being cooked and prepared. The main concern for eating at a vegetarian Indian restaurant is that the selection would be limited considering most dished are traditionally cooked in animal fats or contain meats. It was a nice surprise to learn however, that there are over 170 items on the menu. Taking this on board I decided to be adventurous and attempt (not usually one of my favourites) aubergine curry, which came presented nicely on a slightly oversized plate. The rice was sticky but worked beautifully with the aubergine which itself was superbly cooked. The herbs used in the curry were very strong and gave excellent substance to the dish without overpowering it. I was so impressed with the main course I also tried another dish afterwards, a desert; I ordered payasam, a rice pudding dish with almonds and raisins. It was delivered quickly and was cooked to suit vegans as well as vegetarians. The pudding was warm and not scorching hot, which gave me the opportunity to really taste the spiced fruits included in the desert, which were dried and not overly spicy. The overall experience was surprising, and I urge any Indian food loving vegetarians or vegans to try out this authentic restaurant. The staff are friendly and helpful and willing to alter dishes to suit dietary needs. The most pleasant surprise of the meal was how little the bill had come too. It’s comforting to know that to eat fresh vegetables it will not cost you an arm and a leg. Overall a very exciting experience for an Indian food lover. So get down to Indian Melody, your new favourite restaurant.
