A N D R E A Ă L VA R E Z M U Ă‘ I Z 09/04/1992 (Asturias, Spain)
I studied architecture at the School of Architecture of Valladolid (ETSAVA) and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Afterwards, I attended an official BIM course in Madrid which complemented my knowledge in this field. Then I started working as Junior Architect in a modular construction company, where I acquired knowledge about business activity and constructive processes, as well as I started communicating with clients and working on real projects. As a student, I have also been part of an architectural studio during a 4 month scholarship, collaborating in urban planning projects while completing my academic training. My passion for travelling in combination with my interest about other cultures has led me to move abroad to do volunteer work, where I have discovered myself as a person with problem-solving skills and easily adaptable to new working environments. I am currently pursuing a new job opportunity, I would like to be part of a multi-disciplinary team where I could take part in collaborative projects and also assume independent tasks.

R+D COWORKING S PA C E
Final grade project consisting on drafting a R + D Centre in the form of coworking as spaces for innovation. The project is located inside the polygon of Argales, in Valladolid. As it is an industrial zone and workspace of the city, two of the most affected realities by the crisis are dealt with: industry and employment.
portfolio 2017 6
COMPOSITION In response to the problems posed by the industrial environment of the plot, there is a proposal that, in addition to hosting the required functional program, acts as a reference space in the immediate surroundings of the polygon. The building is developed by articulating the different spaces with a layout that generates a division of the free spaces of parcel. Inside the building is distributed on two floors that are organized by an annular system of distribution and circulation around an inner courtyard that characterizes the visual and mobility relations in the interior of the centre. The spatial linkage of each of the interior spaces with the areas of outdoor recreation is reinforced in a plastic way by means of an extension of the finishes used in the different pavements. This resource is used in the rest of the plot and reinforces the linkage of the building to the place.
STRUCTURE AS AESTHETICS We choose to resort to the characteristic materials of the industrial areas (concrete seen, metal panels prefabricated in facade) so that the plasticity of the whole evokes the industrial character of the environment, it in an aesthetically controlled proposal. The structural solution has a primordial presence, since the large ridge beams configure, organize and articulate the spaces inside. This leads to a distribution of the main installations that adapts to the structural logic. In this way, the systems (structure and installations) that allow the correct operation of the building are expressly put in value and not hidden as usual practice. Constructive sincerity defines the character of the project and solves the needs of the program. The sizing and assembly of the pieces plays a very important role in the building, configuring both its exterior and interior image.

HOTEL RESORT IN COMILLAS
University project. Intervention in the historical center of the city of Comillas. The existing elements in the solar have a historical value, so it is proposed a planning that respects and highlights the potentialities of the place. A public space, a complete parking area and a set of hotel apartments are projected.
portfolio 2017 14
RESPECTING THE EXISTING The town of Comillas is characterized by being integrated in the landscape, between the hills and the Cantabrian sea. It still retains an interesting balance between landscape and edification, with the important presence of slopes and vegetation. These elements, on a smaller scale, are the same ones that are present in the chosen plot. The intervention area is surrounded by a large stone wall. It includes a hermitage and a historic hotel and offers views of the church. Various initiatives, both private and municipal, aim to revitalise the area. First, restoring the old hotel and consolidating its private use. Second, incorporating the lower part of the solar to the urban area as a public square. Third, demolishing the obsolete hotel to connect the site with the apse of the church and the main square of the village.
A PA R T M E N T C E L L S The program comprises a main building linked to the entrance that contains the common areas, such as reception, leisure spaces, storage and installation rooms. A public square over an underground parking area that complements the town’s facilities. Several hotel apartments with one, two and four bedrooms. It is proposed a series of disaggregated apartments that adapt to the topography of the place. These are placed at different heights, conveniently oriented towards the views and connected by a stone path. They are supported on concrete slabs, trying to interfere as little as possible in the topography to conserve the vegetation. The main building material is wood, creating a parallel with the abundant trees in the plot. While the structure of the public use building is made of metal, the apartments have a wooden portico structure combined with thermal-chip insulating panels. The wood autoregulates the moisture of the interior, absorbing it when it is excessive and giving it off when the environment dries.

VENICE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
University project consisting on the extension of the School of Architecture of the UniversitĂ Iuav di Venezia. The solar condenses the cultural identity of the Venetian school. Apart from showing a beautiful combination of water and land, it merges simultaneously with the ancient urban design of Venice and the industrial area of the Giudecca.

MADE OF CONTRASTS Venice is a city characterized by contrasts: water and solid land, free space and building, picturesque scale and transatlantic scale. Following the line of reconciliation of opposites, the project for the Enlargement of the School of Architecture is based on an idea: the wall. An element that functions as a room divider, a singular barrier that contains an orthogonal space. The brick wall encloses the perimeter of the plot, configuring a compact image to the building, similar to the existing one in the historical part of the city. The succession of gaps in the enclosure creates singular accesses and filters the views from different perspectives. Only after crossing this barrier can the free spaces and glass facades be discovered. The buildings of the university complex that are are located in the interior are characterized by their lightness and transparency as opposed to the exterior image. Two openings placed on opposite sides of the wall create a linear connection between the old university headquarters and the industrial buildings, converting the central courtyard into an element of passage and a space of relationship.
I D E N T I T Y O F S PA C E S The needs of the program are solved with two blocks aligned to the interior faces of the wall, so that the center of the empty plot creating a large space of recreation. One of the buildings contains the classrooms of teaching and faculty, as well as an exhibition area and another one of restoration linked to the main entrance. The other, being more closed and compact, houses the auditorium that will serve the nearby faculties. The selected materials also create a texture contrast. To the exterior, the brick wall shows its historical character, while to the interior, the modular constructions of metal, glass and concrete offer an industrialized and modern image.

REEF SPORTS COMPLEX
Project competition consisting of proposals for the remodelling of the sports area of Piedras Blancas, in Asturias (Spain). The current sports complex of the municipality is to be remodeled, so that it encompasses the offer and sports demand in terms of sports facilities, as well as equipping it with new sports infrastructures.
portfolio 2017 26
PHASED CONSTRUCTION Considering the remodeling and modernizatio of the Sports Area, it is proposed an intervention that allows continuity of the different activities during the execution of the works. The process of construction of the new sports spaces is programmed so that the facilities can be used without the need to relocate or suspend trainings or activities. The public facilities constitute not only a service to the citizen, it affects the social cohesion of the area in which they are located. The new sports space will have to be integrated into the municipal equipment network, also offering an image that seeks to valorise the existing resources: Arnao climbing pathways. The pathways of the nearby town on Arnao will be reproduced in the wall projected on the west facade. Fossil Reef of Arnao. It is moved to the main building, printing on its facades the relief of the fossilized stems that can easily be found on the coast.
PREMISES Setting in value of the existing building. The useful life of the sports facilities must be optimised to the maximum, it will opt for the remodeling and expansion of the existing one. Compaction and compatibility of uses. The building will agglutinate the sports court and service spaces, the new multi-purpose rooms, the administrative uses and the sports house. Minimization of enclosed free space. The correct management of the plot allows to liberate a greater area destined to open use spaces. Energy sustainability and respect for the environment. The use of solar thermal energy is foreseen for the supply of the installations with sanitary hot water. Permeable systems will be used in the urbanization. Accessibility to all people. A universal accessibility criterion is adopted to all the projected spaces, it guarantees its use in a safe and autonomous way. Flexibility of projected spaces. Flexible space is configured and able to adapt to different future programs. Reuse of resources. The structure currently covering the outer runway can be reused in other sports facilities of the Council.
