Negative Factors affecting Thailand’s Economy in 2011 2010 has already passed. If we look back and consider it, we’ll find that it was a year in which the economy grew very well. Economic growth in the third quarter of 2010 was about 6.7 percent, with the first half of the year at 10.7 percent, being Thailand’s maximum growth in 15 years. However, it was growth based on 2009’s low base, when the country was affected by the subprime crisis. In 2011, many organizations expect economic growth to be 3.5 to 4.5 percent down from 2010. Risk factors causing contraction to Thailand’s economy in the year ahead, are the following; Global economic growth will decline in 2011 n recent years, the global economy has already recovered from crisis due to world growth rates that have grown in more than two consecutive quarters and increased to levels equal to or higher than the period before the crisis. However, the recovery of the global economy is not strong yet, especially in the developed countries. This makes the global economy next year likely to slow down. We may see that the unemployment rates are still high, especially in developed countries. The United States had an unemployment rate of 9.6 percent in September 2010. Europe had a 10.1 percent unemployment rate in August 2010. Japan had an unemployment rate of 5.2 percent in August. Besides this problem, there is also a problem of budget deficits and a rise in public debt to GDP. This is due to the use of huge budgets to stimulate the economy. Many countries, especially in Europe, have public debt issues. Public debt in the developed countries grew rapidly from

48.2 percent of GDP in 2007 to 70.7 percent of GDP in 2010. However, the public debt of GDP ratio in the emerging economy is quite stable. Slowdown in the global economy will also make Thai exports slow down next year. If we include the result of flooding, which heavily damaged farmland and caused the export of agricultural products to decrease significantly during the rest of 2010, the slowdown may continue until 2011, and it is possible that Thailand’s exports next year will slow down significantly, compared to 2010. Baht appreciation continues In November 2010, the baht appreciated to its highest level in the past 13 years. It was 29.5 per US $ as a result of a continual inflow of capital. In 2011, the situation will still not change that much. Short-term capital will flow out from Europe and the United States to Asian countries that have higher returns. Thus, Asian currencies will appreciate more quickly. Continual baht appreciation will increase the pressure on Thai exports. The margin of Thai exporters will be lower. Export value growth in term of the baht was in the

negative since August and expected to continue to be negative later in 2010 and in the first half of 2011.

land considers Thailand’s economic growth not to be a problem. But economic stability will fluctuate because inflation is expected to rise. Even at the end of 2010, the inflation rate grew less, after expanding at a high level. However, it is estimated that the rate of inflation in the fourth quarter of 2010 to 2011 will increase due to an increase to agricultural crop prices after the major floods. Also included, is the increase to minimum wages and salaries of the entire system of MPs and senators, as well as government officers. Thus, higher costs of production are caused, which may lead to the phenomenon of a wage price spiral that happens when the cost of goods increases and then labourers call for more pay, and so on as a cycle. For this reason, the Bank of Thailand has increased the interest rate in order to control inflation, thus resulting in higher financial costs in 2011. We are going to see manufacturers fight hard for currency appreciation, higher production costs from inflation and rising interest rates, and increased wages.

Political situation is likely to change The Prime Minister has confirmed the certainty of parliamentary dissolution in 2011 and there will be an election under democratic rule. 2011 will mark an important turning point for the Thai economy. Government changes may cause policy inconsistency and economic growth that is not to full potential. Before the new election takes place, investors may be unsure, due to changes that may occur. They will postpone their investments to see if there will be changes to government policies or not. This will slow down new investments. However, if election results come out in a good way and are acceptable to all parties, it will be a The oil price factor may also be one of slight good sign for investments. increase. Though expected to stay at 79 dollars per barrel in 2010, in 2011 the oil Rising interest rates and inflation price should remain within the range of 80-90 The interest rate has stayed low for a long time dollars per barrel, thus not changing much from in order to stimulate the economy. However, the present, and not rendering oil price as a the current economic situation is recovering significant negative factor to affect industry more strongly than before. The Monarchic Institution in Thailand Somdej Phra Borom Trilokanath (Phra Ramesuon) took the throne when he was 17 years old, in 1448. He was the 8th king of Ayutthaya. The other was from his mother, the Phra-Ruang dynasty, Sukhothai. or spiritual welfare, Somdej Phra Borom Trilokanath was a devout Buddhism. TBUK is aware that the current biggest problem facing the operation of Thai business in the UK is difficulty surrounding the import of certain fresh Thai vegetables and herbs into the EU. With this in mind the group joined forces with the Royal Thai Embassy, DEP, and the Office of Agriculture in Brussels to organise a seminar on vegetable imports from Thailand which took place on 27th January 2011 at the Royal Thai Embassy.

A

The seminar discussed the latest developments in the EU regulations for “high risk” vegetable imports which mainly concern problem items such as Thai aubergines, sweet basil, holy basil, coriander, mint and some types of chilli. Shortage of these ingredients could spell trouble for many Thai businesses in the UK, the majority of which are made up of more than 1500 restaurants and cafes, not to mention supermarkets and grocery suppliers.

restaurant review Sponsored by

ORA is a modern Thai restaurant in central London, located in Little Portland Street, just off Oxford Circus station. This is actually the 4th time we’ve visited ORA, and they’ve been consistently getting better on each occasion. Tonight, they really set out to impress. With several new additions to the menu and an even larger range of drinks than ever before, it seemed like exactly the right time to visit. The arrival of the pomegranate martini was just the right balance between sweet and sour. ORA’s food is a real taste of Thailand. You will love the starter, mieng kum, if you are Thai, or even just a farang who loves Thai food. If you’re not used to the general taste and texture of Thai food, you may wish to stay away from this particular dish. The tod mun pu (crab cakes) were real hit with everyone on the table. Not too chewy, not too hard – just right. Lastly, if you’re a fan of salads, don’t Our first drinks were Thai iced tea, served miss the nuer nam tok (beef) salad. in traditional ceramic pottery. The taste was authentic, wouldn’t look at all out of place For the main course, we were recomin a swanky Thai café. The Tiger beer was mended the ped yang nam makam (duck served at exactly the right temperature, and breast in tamarind sauce), and the pla was nicely poured out by the one of the paow (grilled sea bream). The meat was tender and juicy, and is suitable for both many members of helpful staff. s soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a member of staff, who bundled our many layers into their complimentary cloakroom, before being shown to our table. We could not help but notice the centrepiece of the restaurant, which is the large bar, complete with computer screens and flashing lights. All through the meal, we saw mixologists hard at work, creating what seemed like extremely delicious cocktails.

This curry is unlike many other Thai curries, because it does not contain any coconut milk. Perfect for those who are watching their figures! We promise that you won’t notice the absence of the coconut milk too much.
