SPECIAL EDITON October 2009

It Is All Coming Together The AMTA OK Chapter Board had the first ever (that we know of) Board Retreat at the Canebrake (www.thecanebrake.com) in Wagoner, Oklahoma. We stayed cool in the August heat and were able to focus on a Board Orientation, Strategic Planning and Budgeting. The presentations were incredible. Thank you so much Christopher! We also enjoyed a couple of Yoga classes that were great experiences for the Board to participate in together. During this short retreat we bonded and learned a lot about each other. We have a diverse group with a wide array of skills and are looking forward to some wonderful experiences with you….the members. We hope you enjoy this special edition and have your chapter pins by now. We look forward to seeing you soon at a meeting or event. ThanX! Chris, Scott, Xerlan, Nina & George

October 25th - 31st, 2009 Chair: Nina Madsen, 3rd VP 973-670-2713 National Massage Therapy Awareness Week (NMTAW) October 25-31, 2009 In looking at what we have done for NMTAW in the past we decided to kick it up a notch this year. We are going to have a blast! We will have two events this year. One in Tulsa and one in OKC at the State Capitol. Scott Rayburn, 1st VP will be heading up the event at the State Capitol. At the time of this printing he is still getting confirmation of the date. It should be Wednesday, October 28th. If you are interested and willing to come do chair massage with the group please contact Scott as soon as possible; phone 405-528-4840 or by email Waterock1@cox.net Our event is Tulsa is very special. Operation Aware is a non-profit organization whose mission is to "equip youths, through prevention education, with the knowledge and skills to make positive life choices." They are having their 8th Annual Red Ribbon Run on the morning of Saturday, October 24th (8:30 am). They are so kind they are actually putting the NMTAW Logo on the Run T-Shirts. It also might be nice to demonstrate to parents at the race simple massage therapy techniques they can use on their child to help relieve stress. (This way we put ourselves in a position of educating them) in addition to offering chair massage. By offering table and chair massage I feel we can have greater participation. Please contact me as soon as possible if you are interested and willing to participate in this event. Nina Madsen LMT, CMA, BFA Licensed Massage Therapist Certified Movement Analyst

We are most effective as a team  when we compliment each other  without embarrassment and         disagree without fear.    ‐ Unknown Delegate Report by Xerlan Geiser-Deery AMTA House of Delegates approves two position statements The AMTA House of Delegates debated proposals for association position statements that express the sense of the membership on matters pertaining to massage therapy. This year, the delegates approved two position statements, which are now official positions of the association. Two proposed position statements were not approved, as delegates felt their language and/or the research support cited were not at the level the delegates would like to see for the association to take such positions. Details on the approved position statements will soon be available on the AMTA website and will become part of the association’s efforts to promote the value of massage therapy, supported by research. The approved statements are: - It is the position of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) that massage can aid in pain relief. - It is the position of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) that massage therapy can improve the quality of life for those in hospice and palliative care. One proposed recommendation was not approved, as delegates were so clear on the issue they only had the introduction and one debate against the measure before it was moved to a vote. One proposed recommendation was approved: The HOD operations committee recommend to the National Board of Directors to include in their 2010 budget a compensation to hire and train full-time field representatives to travel to and promote AMTA to schools and students for increased membership and lasting relationships, with territories left up to National to decide along with job descriptions to promote professional excellence. The HOD went incredibly smooth this year. We appreciate the leadership of Moderator Dan Barrow (NM) and HOD Chair Maureen Hoock (MO). There was vibrant debate, issues were discussed and presented in a thorough and clear manner with high decorum. The HOD was completed in record time this year. I thank everyone for an amazing experience the last two years representing Oklahoma in the House of Delegates at the National Convention. It has been an honor for me. Next year, your delegate is Christopher Deery. He is very thrilled to represent Oklahoma on the floor of the HOD. He is also willing to take it to the next level in Oklahoma to actually write and submit a recommendation or position statement. There is a March 15 deadline so the work will begin quite soon. If you are interested in participating in that process please contact Christopher by phone 918-859-7216 or email Chris.Deery@gmail.com Page 5
