April 2014

Welcome Amanda Macias Hallo! I’d like to start off by saying that I’m very excited to be here and look forward to meeting and working with everyone soon. This is my first time in Germany, well, Europe for that matter, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. I’ve been asked to introduce myself so let’s see how I do: My name is Amanda Macias, and I’m the new Assistant Station Manager for American Red Cross Hohenfels. Before arriving in country, I was soaking up the sun in my hometown of Apopka, Florida. It’s a small town near Orlando and the name actually means “Big Potato.” I got to spend some much needed down time with family and friends which is always a good time.

Deployment to Afghanistan Prior to my time in Florida, I was stationed at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan where I was an Assistant Station Manager working closely with our deployed service members and civilians. My deployment lasted about six months where I spent one month training in Fort Sill, OK and Fort Bliss, TX before leaving for a five month tour in Afghanistan. While on deployment, our main mission is Emergency Communication Messages and Afghanistan receives a fair number of them. The office staff would jump for joy when the messages involved the birth of a healthy baby or, even better, the opportunity for the service member to watch the birth via Skype.

My Red Cross career actually started back in 2010 while stationed in Camp Casey, South Korea. This is where I first started volunteering and feel in love with the organization. I would do small things like organize the office, manage files, make decorations and assist with whatever I could at all the events. The tasks might have appeared undersized but the impact was felt base wide.

New Opportunity in Germany I’m really excited for this opportunity and am looking forward to spending the next few years with all of you. Thanks for all the support , and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone.

American Red Cross Bavarian Military Community The American Red Cross Bavarian Military Community (BMC) serves Tower Barracks, Rose Barracks, Hohenfels and Garmisch communities. Our locations offer:

-Emergency Communication Message Services

On March 11, the Red Cross teamed up with the USO to host a blood drive for the Armed Services Blood Program. Red Cross volunteers assisted with the blood donors and answered any questions they had about the Red Cross. The blood drive was a success: 96 people volunteered and gave 91 pints of blood, which will affect the lives of 271 of our servicemen and women. Be on the lookout for the next blood drive on May 6!

During the month of March, the Red Cross taught 20 community members life-saving skills during 3 CPR certification classes and a Babysitting Training class.
