January Issue, 2011
AMPLIFIED then on October 21st, 2011 the world will end. Maybe you tend to stay away from theories like these which seem dramatic, but are wondering if maybe, just maybe, the deaths of the birds and fish along with the catastrophic worldwide events in 2010 and 2011 should be something to pay attention to?
IS IT THE BEGINNING OF THE END? By Cheniene Clemens
Have you noticed, there have been odd things going on in the world around us? Is it the end? If you are like many, you are not sensing immediate impending doom, but maybe you are thinking some things have been just plain bizarre; and you are beginning to listen to co-workers and wonder… just a little. If you explore google, you will find there are hundreds of different theories attempting to explain and predict the end, and it is easy to get swept up in the weird and the mystical. Can we know, definitively, when the end will begin?
In case you are not familiar with any of these, allow me to share events that have led others to be at least curious if, together, we can glean an indication that we are in the beginning of the end. On January 1st, to the surprise of us all, thousands of blackbirds fell out of the sky in Arkansas. Granted, this was a very rare occurrence. It would be safe to say that birds die everyday and it is just rare when a human gets to see them after they have passed. However, over the next few days people started to report the findings of dead birds globally. Three days later, Louisiana reported the findings of approximately 500 blackbirds and starlings. A week later, approximately 100,000 fish (all of the same species) were found along the shoreline in Arkansas as well. Similarly, in Maryland, approximately 2 million fish were found dead around the same time. At this point, it is easy to think, ‘well it is just in the US; there is probably something scientific going on that is stressing the animals out’… until Italy reported in that they had a thousand turtledoves fall from the sky. Similar stories popped up all over the world, all within the first two weeks of the New Year.
Indulge me while I mention just a few prevalent theories, which, mixing science and faith, lay claim to a determination of when the end will come. Surely, in the past few years, you came across a belief which states that because the Mayan calendar comes to its end in December of 2012, we can know this is the end of civilization. And there is the theory that at least most of life on the earth will end by a great shaking of the earth caused by the reversal of the poles. There is even a recent declaration being spread amongst people via bumper stickers, billboards, websites, and word of mouth, that on May 21st, 2011 Jesus will come and rapture His people up into heaven, and
What about the bizarre weather and catastrophic events? Freak tornados ripped through the US in 2010 as if cities were thin paper. Heavy rain and flash flooding drowned a good portion of
world leaders making decisions against Israel? What about wars? Birds and Fish dying in masses? In Matthew 24, He mentions there being earthquakes and famines and tells us “..these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs”. It is the writer’s belief, as the birds and fish are not mentioned, to give these too much heed risks turning them into a theology. The same may be said about the United Nations’ decisions. Perhaps it is important to take note that strange things are beginning to happen, and to consider it a test to make sure we are paying attention, and have the oil needed when He does come. We have to make sure that we are living in accordance to what He has called us to, and the areas where we are found lacking, we need to begin to correct the wrongs while there is still time left. As John Zebedee tells us “...we are children of God...we know when He appears we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself just as He is pure.”
California over the holidays. Flash floods hit hard in Australia. Forty-nine (49) out of the fifty (50) states in the US had reported snowfall in the past three weeks. In 2010 a dormant volcano began to wake up in Indonesia, and also in 2010 there were approximately 69 earthquakes worldwide. What about the continuing dispute over the nation and land of Israel? In a newsletter written by messianic Jews in Israel, “Israel Today”, alerted readers that the Executive Board of the Hundredth and eighty-fourth session of the United Nations stated it: “8. Regrets the Israeli authorities decision to include the two sites (the tomb of the Patriarchs in al-Khalil/Hebron and Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem) on its national heritage list; 9. Urges the Israeli authorities to abide by international law ad the relevant international conventions and decisions, and 10. Also urges the Israeli authorities to remove the two sites from its national heritage list“. “Say what?” You may be thinking, “Does the United Nations have the ability to determine Rachel’s (Jacob’s wife) tomb is not an Israeli historical sight? Will this lead to other things which will one day soon cause a great war?”

While all the things mentioned above are real, and they all happened for a reason, let us remember, there is only one way to determine when the end begins. We must go see what the Word says, relying only on it. Does Jesus tell us catastrophic events will be a sign? How about

THE TRUTH BEHIND VALENTINE’S DAY knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.
By Zerimar Ramirez When you hear Valentine’s Day… what comes to mind? Perhaps chocolates, flowers, jewelry and maybe even those little, cute, cut out cards you buy your kids at the drug store to hand out to all of their little classmates at their school parties? You know, the ones taped shut with heart-shaped candies that leave those red stains on your tongue. I know, I thought of all of those things. Unfortunately, this is what we all see and know of Valentine’s Day. Another harmless commercialized holiday, right? Perchance, if we were in Italy, we would have a tad more of a historical background on Saint Valentinus… yes, Valentine’s Day is the celebration of a martyred saint and his story of love.
The lives of young boys and girls were strictly kept separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia, the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl's name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry. Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II, Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed the reason was that Roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest in Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed, Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off.
The history of Valentine's Day — and its patron saint — is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains fragments of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.
He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time, it was the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom indeed, to celebrate the Lupercalia, feasts in honor of a heathen god in the month of February. On these occasions, amidst a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed. The pastors of the
Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honor Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also
early Christian Church in Rome endeavored to do away with the pagan element in these feasts by substituting the names of saints for those of maidens. And as the Lupercalia began about the middle of February, the pastors appear to have chosen Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration of this new feast. So, it seems that the custom of young men choosing maidens for valentines, or saints as patrons for the coming year, arose in this way. While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial — which probably occurred around 270 A.D — others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to "christianize" celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and a type of wheat called spelt throughout their interiors. Lupercalia, which began at the Ides of February, February 15, was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at
the sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would then sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. The boys then sliced the goat's hide into strips, dipped them in the sacrificial blood and took to the streets, gently slapping both women and fields of crops with the goathide strips. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed being touched with
the hides because it was believed the strips would make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would then each choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. Pope Gelasius declared February 14, St. Valentine's Day, around 498 A.D.
The Roman "lottery" system for romantic pairing was deemed un-Christian and outlawed. In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced Valentines in America. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion Valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest cardsending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.) Approximately 85 percent of all Valentines are purchased by women. In addition to the United States, Valentine's Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR February! Wow! A month chocked full of events….chocked full of celebrations, spanning from Valentines Day to Black History Month. I think you will find this issue of Amplified so full of interesting and informative information that you just may not be able to put it down…or in this case….close your computer. My first thoughts of February tend to veer towards Valentine’s Day and love …. or my son’s birthday (on second thought, in case he is reading this, my first thought is always of his bday!!). With that in mind, I want to share one piece of wisdom from my vast (said sarcastically) experience and knowledge of “love.” What the world needs now is love, sweet love! Is that a true statement? Yes, it most certainly is. God is love, and what the world needs now is…..God. As believers, we are filled with God himself in the form of His Holy Spirit. With the empowering of the Holy Spirit, we have the ability to reflect the Lord…..at least we are supposed too. Our very lives should, in fact, be pointing people towards God and showing them who He is……a God of love. God doesn’t just have an overabundance of love…..He is love! So…..why is the world seemingly full of everything except love, and even the church, as a whole, critically lacking in this emotion? Why are Christians so easily labeled by the world as “hypocrites” when their very behavior mirrors a world of hate rather than a God of love? I believe it is because of two very important facts. The first is this: true love is not something we can muster up ourselves. Any love we produce ourselves is fleshy, weak, and unsustainable. The God kind of love is called “agape” love and is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, produced in our lives as we, the branches, stay connected to and nurtured by the vine, God. John 15:5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” As we grow in God, we draw our nutrients, our very life and breath, from God. Through His Holy Spirit, He, in turn, produces the fruit of the Spirit in our lives….the first of which is “love.” The second is this: Jesus said in the New Testament that the greatest commandment was to love God and each other… Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ At first glance, this would appear to be a contradiction to what I just stated before, that this isn’t something we produce, it is given by the Lord. This Scripture implies that we are to do something ourselves, as though we have a choice in the matter. Well….guess what? That is exactly right! We do have a choice in the matter. Love is, in fact, a choice. Let me explain further. We have a choice to make with every response or action, whether to respond in love, or whether to make a less “Godly” choice. Since we cannot produce this love in ourselves, the choice is one of allowing the Holy Spirit to be in control, or being in control ourselves which will inevitably prove to be disappointing to someone. It is a choice independent of our emotions, our soul, and totally dependent on our spirit. We live in a society where people fall in and out of love….a love based on nothing but weak and wavering emotions, where decisions and actions toward each other are made based on nothing but weak and wavering emotions. God’s desire is that we experience and reflect back to the world, His love… a steady, selfless, unconditional, unwavering kind of love produced in our lives as we allow Him to do so. Remember, God chose to love us. He didn’t have to….He chose too! And, His kind of love is a faithful love that is unchangeable! Love is a choice!
MAMA KNOWS BEST... Don’t know what to do? Ask you know who! Q. I am 16 and want to go to church and youth group. My parents are Catholic and don't want me to go to a non-Catholic church. HELP! A. A desire to be in church and plugged in to a youth group is awesome, and God loves that! BUT God has also set up the way things work best … an order, a divine order, which is even more important than going to church and youth group. In plain terms, God is the head over your parents and they in turn are your head . . . meaning they're still in charge! Because you're 16 -- and I presume still living at home -- your parents are still responsible to God and to the law for you, both morally and legally. God says to "Honor your father and mother" and "Obey your parents, and things will go well with you." God has given us an order of how to live before Him -- as individuals, as families, as a church. GOD -> umbrella over -> parents -> umbrella over -> kids Think of an umbrella: it provides covering from the climate, right? It gives protection from a storm. As long as we stay under that umbrella, we stay dry and warm, or cool in the heat. If we move out from under it, we become open to all kinds of trouble. God is like that -- a huge umbrella -- even over your folks! and they are the head or "covering," like an umbrella, over you. If you stay under their guidance and "covering," especially when you think there's a better way, that honors your parents, and God will honor you and your obedience. That's divine order. God is our Heavenly Parent, caring and instructing and protecting us through His word on how to live; and He gives us earthy parents who are responsible to provide that same care and protection until we are able to
care for ourselves, with God's help of course. Even if we have the "perfect parents," we still need God. But until then, they're in charge… disappointment and even discouragement may come, but let's remember the BIG PICTURE> God sees the heart and He's in control! In fact, many times God gives us a desire or appetite for something long before we may have it -> hunger! So here's how that works: Honor, obey and pray . . . honor your earthly parents and pray to your Heavenly Father. Ask Father God to make a way for you according to His will. Respect your parents -- do what's asked, be responsible, volunteer to help, work hard at school, doing your best. You might also ask to invite some new friends from the church and youth group to your home and have a bible study and worship there! Perhaps their hearts will soften as they see you loving God and willing to obey cheerfully, no matter what. They may still say no, the challenges may still be there, but your relationship with God will be getting stronger and more real every day . . . and hopefully with your parents, too And before you know it, you'll be of age and able to follow the Lord to where He wants you to worship and study the word. It is God's design and wisdom to obey and honor your parents. God LOVES that a lot. Debra Wynn attends Resound Church and LOVES it. Debra is married to Tom Wynn, has 4 children and 3 grandchildren. She is a passionate teacher of Word. Oh, and did we mention that she is Leah’s mom... If you would like to ask Mama Wynn a question, please email DebraWynn@Resound247.com.
we’ve always done, and for someone to question said practices would mean offense in our own hearts! Oftentimes, these are pleasurable for us in the short term, such as sin in the moment, like those sweets and desserts that look and smell so enticing. At first they taste so good, though they’re deceptively unhealthy and may cause some issues down the road! When it comes to our health: physical, emotional, AND spiritual, many of us would rather have fast food than a sit-down restaurant.
DAILY BREAD By Matt Tucker For the majority of my life, I’ve thought very little about the things I put into my body. I would come home from school when I was younger and immediately go to the pantry for a snack, I did not question whether or not I was actually hungry, it was simply habitual and pleasurable. I preferred fast foods, sweets and desserts rather than my mother’s wonderful, home-cooked meals and home-made salads, and it was not unusual to have multiple sodas in a sitting!
So what did I do? I stopped eating fast food for a time and gave up soda. Shortly after that, I gave up red meat, then meat itself, and while it was tough at times, something interesting began to happen - my tastes shifted. When you eat healthier, as well as little and often, your stomach gets smaller and it begins to take less to fill you up, which also equals less food and money spent, and more you can save after! Unhealthy foods didn’t smell or taste as good as they once did, and when I would partake of them I didn’t feel the same pleasure that I once had. I felt good, and seemed to be sick less often, AND my physical body began to show a difference for the first time.
When I got to college, I put on 10 pounds my first year, so the following year I began going to the gym with my roommate two and three times a week in the mornings before class. After weeks of this, I realized I was seeing very little physical change. I began to think of my eating and drinking habits and discovered that I had not changed my diet in the least! A good friend of mine and personal trainer says that as much as 70% of your body’s health and look depends on what you’re eating and drinking….what you’re putting into your body.
I got my original, and the more shallow of the goals, of having my physical body’s appearance shift when I made the right and healthy decision first, and put the time and discipline into it. I will be writing Daily Bread monthly, and from here on out, we will look at healthy lifestyles, primarily through the lens of healthy eating and drinking, as I research and discuss issues within nutrition and diet.
Looking back, I think there are many lessons to be learned. Above all, it provokes a question: Isn’t this a perfect portrait of the spiritual battles we face daily within ourselves? We have practices we don’t even think to question because it’s what
ORGANIC AND ALL NATURAL
And, as with all things, we should all pray for direction and discernment, certainly in our own lives when it comes to our nutritional habits! May you be blessed by Him until then, and thanks for stopping in!
I’m sure by now you’ve noticed our nation’s shift towards organic and all-natural foods. Supermarkets have sections of “green” products and farmer’s markets are springing up in many places. I’m all for this. I’m an organic, all-natural buyer when possible as well! Often there is the misconception that this is pricey, and while an organic or all-natural version of a product may be more, buying healthy doesn’t necessarily have to equal more cash flow, particularly when you focus on vegetables, fruits, pasta, rice and beans, and the like, which you can make and portion out. Also think about this: while organic and allnatural may charge another dollar or two, how much more would unhealthiness cost us? Next month we’ll be looking into the questions of “organic-ness” within products, and in the meantime I hope that you’ll be inspired to search it out on your own so you can learn for yourself.

HISTORY BELONGS TO THE WINNERS taught that the people in the South are despicable slaveholders, and the people in the North acted as a savior to the people being held under oppression.
By Cheniene Clemens History that is recorded and taught to the mass populous belongs to the winners. What I mean is, whoever gets their way over an issue, whoever comes out the victor in a debate, or frankly, whoever gets the longer end of the stick decides what future generations think or believe about the event and/or time period. Obviously, this is not a fair practice by any means, because in order to fully understand a story, you must evaluate both sides. All too often, we take what we are taught in school or what we listen to on the History Channel and never bother to study into the things to see what really happened. Over the next few Amplified issues, I am going to devote my article to the unraveling of some of the most important, misunderstood, and propagandized documents and their time periods. For this first article, I would like to take a look at the Emancipation Proclamation.
What if I told you a majority of what we are taught is bogus information? What if I told you, that this is a very narrow-minded view of what actually happened? What if I told you that these facts have actually been skewed and that the story is much bigger and more intriguing than it appears to be? Here’s what really happened. Lets go back to before the Civil War even started. In 1860, during the Presidential election, Abraham Lincoln was running on the Republican ticket. The Republican party which was around in 1860 (there had been more than one political party that held the same name) was composed of abolitionists from the Democratic and Whig parties, and their number one agenda was to see slavery ended. Lincoln did not necessarily hold fast to the same beliefs that the Republicans did. He was not for the expansion of slavery, but he did not have a personal agenda to have it removed either. As you know, Lincoln won the election and became the 16th president. The people in the Southern states were very upset because they believed that with a new republican president, the focus would be shifted to slavery, the tables would be turned on the Missouri Compromise, and they would be forced to release their slaves (mind you only about 25-30% of Southerners owned slaves and 90% of that very small percentage had no more than 10). Although Lincoln attempted to assure the southern states that he would not force them to release their slaves, they did not trust his word and began to take action towards secession. There were a total of 11 states that seceded and joined together to create the “Confederated States of America” (CSA). Very similarly to the way presidents had acted in the past towards states who wanted to secede, Lincoln opposed the South’s wishes to secede from the Union and they were met with military force.
When asked, the majority of people will tell you the Emancipation Proclamation was a document President Lincoln used to free all the slaves. Lincoln is known as “The Great Emancipator”. President Obama used Lincoln’s Bible when he was sworn into office because, supposedly, it was a furthering of unity between the races. Where all these things may seem wonderful and accurate, sadly, there are holes in this bucket. In grade school, we are taught that the Civil War was a war over slavery. We are
The driving factor behind the Civil War is not, and was not slavery. The war was fought because there is a
to disarm their plans. Three years after the war had started, President Lincoln issued a proclamation that would significantly change the course of the war. The Emancipation Proclamation was more a war strategy than it was an effort to release slaves. It stated that all slaves who resided in any Confederate states were to be released. Now, this is a little bizarre considering that technically the CSA states had their own president, constitution, and were claiming to be their own nation, yet Lincoln was still able to sign a valid piece of legislature, which affected their own personal property. In addition, when France and England witnessed Lincoln presenting the Proclamation, and then the South rendered their slaves, the two countries interpreted it to mean that the war really was over slavery and they both chalked it up to be a basic civil dispute between neighbors. Consequently, they both denied the South their alliance. Public reading of the Emancipation Proclamation
With a single document, Lincoln was able to both release the slaves (which were personal property) in the South without any authority to do so, and he greatly lessened the CSA’s chances of gaining any leeway in the war. I do not believe that Lincoln was a devious and horrible man; in fact, in several respects I believe the opposite. He knew our Lord and was not afraid to show it. But, I do want to make sure that we understand the reality of what happened with the EP during the Civil War, and that we are not fueled by false information.
driving force in our country for control over oneself, and to answer the question “what does government mean?” and “what does it mean to be governed?” Slavery was simply a symptom to the war, not the actual disease. Before we can understand why Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation we must set up a few more ideas. There are several remarkable parallels that can be drawn between the North (the Union) during the Civil War and England during the Revolutionary war, as well as the South (The CSA) during the Civil War and the Patriots during the Revolutionary war. All of the parallels are all very interesting and worth looking into, but for time purposes I will only highlight one of the most important.
The Emancipation Proclamation did release some of the slaves, but its purpose was not to release them from an abolitionist viewpoint, but rather as a warstrategy/jab at the South. Not a lot of people take the time to actually read the original documents or study the historical context behind what the mass populous believes, and the few people that do take the time (you and me) are less apt to be swayed by propaganda in the long run! I hope you don’t feel too betrayed by your middle school/ high school teachers. I’m sure they didn’t mean to give you false information. And as always… I suggest you google the Emancipation Proclamation, google information on the Civil War, read books, and google primary documents from that time period for yourself. In order to understand where we are going as a nation, we must understand where we have been. I promise it’s not as boring as it may seem; it is actually incredibly exciting and interesting, and I also promise you will not be disappointed by what you discover.
The Patriots during the Revolutionary war would never have had a chance if they had not received foreign aid from France; naturally, the South needed the support of foreign aid as well in order for them to be able to stand against the Union. The South sought after the aid of England and France, but they needed to come out as the victor in a large battle before England and France would join forces with them. Because the war’s focus was not on slavery, France and England viewed it as one nation (the CSA) fighting against another nation (the Union) so they were considering aiding them. While the South was trying to find her victory Lincoln (the commander in chief for the Union Army) recognized what the South was trying to achieve, and he had a brilliant idea for how

Taylor: …..um…wrapping Christmas lights around your clothes is not the same as their electronic suits. Chris: Woman! Don’t you realize we are in the middle of a recession?! I’m on a budget! Taylor: Moving on. Tron Legacy is a sequel to the first Tron movie that was made in 1982. Jeff Bridges starred in it and was also in this new one. I like that it kind of continues from where the last movie left off, but if you didn’t see the first movie, don’t worry. I think they explain enough that you won’t be lost. In a nutshell, Flynn’s son enters the computer through his father’s video game after his dad has been missing for several years.
Chris: Ya, it does explain it well because it has been so long since I have seen the original and I could still follow along. The movie was really clean with the exception of the women who wear tight “pleather” outfits, but I don’t remember any language or adult situations. Taylor: Maybe its just the nerd in me, but the graphics and music were awesome. One of the characters (I won’t tell you which one) was completely CGI and I didn’t even realize it until halfway through! Chris: Not to mention those SWEET rides. You know, its hard for me not to pretend I’m on a light cycle when I am on my motorcycle.
RSM ministering at The By//Way...
Taylor: Yea, watching all of the action and their “games” was so cool. And man that girl can fight! It makes me wanna give someone a karate chop sandwich!
Why stay at home, when it’s so much fun to go out? You don’t have to go to another country to do missions work. Orlando has lots of people who need God. You don’t need a degree, you just need to be willing!
Chris: My final question to you Tay: Are you a program or a user? Taylor: Definitely a user…..for the people that have no idea what that means, you will just have to see the movie. Why, what are you? ONETHING ORLANDO By Cody Duncon
their hearts, proclaim His Word to their generation, and bring the kingdom to every sphere of society.” [from the Onething website, IHOP.org]
Excitement filled the atmosphere as young adults from across Florida began to flood the sanctuary. Jacksonville came with anticipation for what the next few days would hold. Tallahassee was seen at the coffee shop, mingling with Orlando, and exchanging stories from what past reunions held. Gainesville, pumped and ready to go found themselves to the right of the stage with an obvious zeal for what was about to be let loose in that sanctuary. Something new was about to break out, and everyone wanted to catch some to take to their friends and families back home.
Onething Regional Conferences stem from the International House of Prayer in Kansas City, Missouri, where prayer services have been running continuously for the past 11 years, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Their desire is to train and mobilize intercessors to live lives of prayer and fasting, while preaching the gospel, healing the sick, making disciples, planting ministries, and transforming society; being fully devoted to Jesus. Onething Regionals mobilizes the House of Prayer in cities across the nation with this one scripture setting the pace.
And then it started… a man of God came upon the stage and gathered the pieces of Florida that had come to be fed, and with no delay, asked Almighty God for His tangible presence to come. Hungry men and women began to lift their eyes to heaven. A few hit their knees to the ground, bowing their faces to the dust. What would happen when His presence arrived? Then another man of God, a warrior in worship, began to play the six strings on his instrument, yet one note alone shook the room. The vibrations of spiritual songs rattled the ground and drew in the stragglers from the lobby. The Holy Spirit began to move across the room, looking for true worship, and when He found it, He began to increase Himself. Soon the room was in agreement and, moving as one body, they glorified their King Jesus! Dancing broke out amongst them, with tears and shouts of joy as their accompaniment. Orlando rushed the altar and shook hell with their praises. Thus… Onething Orlando had begun, and Florida had arrived.
"One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple (Ps. 27:4, NKJV)" Praise God! He has been cultivating a culture of prayer here in Orlando and in Florida! Many houses of prayer, churches, marketplace ministries, and believers, young and old, attended the conference last week, January 13-15. They felt it was a time of refreshing, sending out, encouragement, and unity. I am reminded of Psalm 133:1-3, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments. It is like the dew of Hermon, descending upon the mountains of Zion; for there the LORD commanded the blessing— life forevermore.”
“In this important time in history, God is raising up a movement of young adults and awakening their hearts to intimately encounter Him, that they might give themselves to love Jesus with all
internship for that position, and I had to get to know the CEO I'd be serving forever.”
The Kingdom of Heaven is coming to earth, and Jesus is returning to reconcile man to Himself, fulfilling His covenant with us. When His kingdom is established, who do you think is going to be there? Us. You. A friend told me this week, “It sure is a good thing we (churches) are starting to get along and function in and appreciate our differences and giftings, because we’re going to be with each other for a long time. If we don’t learn to be unified now, how on earth will we live and serve in the Kingdom together?” More and more, the body of Christ is beginning to love God… and love each other. And the promise? Life forevermore. Praise God for Onething Orlando helping to fulfill scriptures in our region! I believe success is defined by the love of God, and our love towards Him. Did this conference help us love Jesus more? We interviewed a Onething attendee, a student at the University of Central Florida, Ivanna Ortiz. (Cody) “Ivanna, what happened to you at the conference? “ (Ivanna) “Onething was awesome. The Lord graciously released greater revelation of His justice and coming kingdom.
I'm even more excited for Jesus to come govern the earth and make the wrong things right!” Later, we also interviewed Nicole Hawkins, a staff member at Resound Missions Base in Orlando. (Cody) “Nicole, what was your favorite moment over this weekend while attending the Onething Conference? (Nicole) ”One of my favorite moments was when Dwayne Roberts preached Friday on the importance of seeing our future assignment, not just focusing on these 90 years (or so). I also realized I don't understand at all the term: forever. He talked about what will be chartered in the next age. I realized that I hadn't fully considered carefully what I had been building in the Lord, and thought, ‘What if the foundation I'm building in the Lord, such as love as pure gold, gemstones of righteousness, and revelation as rock (things that can't perish in holy fire) were the LITERAL foundation of my home in heaven?’ I felt the fear of the Lord, and I realized that forever is His reality. I had to destroy my paradigm. I have become motivated to live a fasted lifestyle, denying passing pleasures, to sow into eternal ones. In short, I realized that this really is an
Dwayne Roberts, of whom Nicole spoke, was just one of the phenomenal, “dedicated to Jesus” ministers, who served and led us over the weekend. With him came Mike Bickle, Wes Martin, Justin Rizzo, Matt Gilman, and others. Church in the Son hosted everything while Carlos and Emily Sarmiento organized and served Onething with their team, the Orlando House of Prayer. Resound was excited to serve as well, and even led a prayer set in the Onething prayer room, along with helping minister alongside OHOP in the prophecy rooms. Thank you Orlando House of Prayer, Church in the Son, and the International House of Prayer for facilitating such a wonderful and powerful gathering of believers. We look forward to next years Onething Orlando! For more information about Onething visit IHOP.org, and look under the events tab.

A FIRE IS BURNING: CHINA By Anonymous Contributor
It was the summer of 2008 during the Olympics being held in Beijing. I was in China on a short term trip with a team of just 5 people. It was a Sunday and I was in a sort of church that one needed a foreign passport to attend. This church was totally open and even had a few billboards around town advertizing its existence. I was confused to say the least because we were working with the “underground” church, yet here we were right out in the open. As I write this, I have now lived in China for about a year and a half. Not long enough to know much, but one thing I've learned is that this land is a study in contrasts and contradictions. When you think you know something, you really don't… out in the open and hidden… freedom of religion, yet leaders of religious networks in prison. I told a friend of mine who came to teach in the underground church to try not to make sweeping generalizations because this country is just too big, too diverse, and the only frame of reference we have is so small as to really be irrelevant. Our impressions are just that, personal and, whether relevant to the whole or not, is impossible to say.
ascendancy of China. Inside I can feel that God is up to something big in this land, something that will effect the entire world. My friends here feel the same thing. I came to help train Chinese workers. We called ourselves shadow pastors, and we used teaching English as our framework for sowing into these precious lives. We conducted ourselves in a very secretive manner, not telling anyone what we were doing or with whom. I found when I interacted with other westerners here, they were very comfortable with this vagueness, and we just learned not to ask work related questions to those of us from the west. If asked what we were doing here, our pat answer was 'I'm learning Mandarin.' Since coming, I have learned much about China; its ancient culture which values a communal mindset as opposed to an individualistic one is deeply engrained. From a negative standpoint, this means people tend to hide in a group, but from a positive standpoint, it gives the Chinese believers an entirely different view of 'the body of Christ.' They can relate at a level we don't understand because of our cultural bias to think individually. This opens up all the scriptures that talk about unity, the body and its connectedness because thinking of the group first comes very naturally to the Chinese.
But back to that church on that Sunday morning now over three years ago. It was early, so I followed my nose to the coffee machine, and there was a Chinese lady making coffee engrossed in a conversation with another westerner. This middleaged Christian lady was talking about the Olympics and particularly the opening ceremony. Apparently, there was a spectacular light show and part of it consisted of giant pyrotechnic footsteps coming into the stadium. The lady said “That was Jesus coming into China.”
I had the opportunity to teach a group of about 50 people who came from all over China who were learning how to pray for their nation in what to them was a new way. The Seven Mountains is what we call it. The Seven Mountains are simply the key segments that make up a society; Politics, Religion, Education, Entertainment, Business, for example. They are key areas of influence the church is supposed to have in society. We are supposed to rule through spiritual authority. The Chinese church is renowned for its ability to pray, but I believe what God is doing is focusing that prayer in a new way, from the standpoint of authority and responsibility.
She said these Olympics are China's coming out party. China was taking its place as a leader among the nations economically and that is how the Chinese government viewed the games. But she said what was also happening, and far more significant was that spiritual China was taking its place among the nations, and the light show was a prophetic enactment of what she saw in the spirit. This was a totally new idea for me as a westerner. But this was a key piece in God's orchestration of my journey to China and it has proved to be the theme of my short tenure here…the spiritual
I knew the recent history of China was awful because I was in Vietnam in the late 60's, and during that time, the big restraint on America's involvement in that war was the fear of China entering that war. I now believe that those fears were well founded as the turmoil in China was beyond anything we in the west could imagine. During those years, it is estimated that some 80 million people died in China, most from preventable starvation but many as the result of paranoid programs intended to crush dissent. It was in this crucible of suffering that the seeds for the explosive growth of the church were planted. Believers paid a price for their faith and that price was at least being marginalized in society, but sometimes was imprisonment and even death. This is a huge truth we in the west need to appreciate. There is a tremendous amount of innocent blood spilled on this ground. That blood is crying out for the Father to act on behalf of the martyrs and those who have suffered here like nowhere else on earth throughout history that I am aware of. Recently, our friends here went through a rather frightening series of events with the authorities. Simply put, someone from the inside took sensitive information to the local authorities. My personal information was included. Everything we were doing stopped. We prayed, feared for the worst and trusted God would work even this for good. What He did is really incredible. No one was arrested, no one was put in prison, and the work can continue in a little different form and in new locations. Let me remind you of my beginning admission; I only know this little slice of China. I know leaders are still in prison elsewhere. But here, in our little sphere, a door has been opened a little wider, and we know there are many others all over this country being opened by the sovereign hand of the Father as well. This is a time of tremendous opportunity. As I write this I have to also say that the Chinese church isn't perfect, not at all. In fact, I'm sure a lot of missionaries here, if they were reading this would say I'm whacked. They would say that the church here is just as materialistic, just as selfish, just as doctrinally divided as in the west and you’re going to think I'm schizophrenic, but I would agree with them… if you look with your natural eyes. And of course, that's not how to see what the Father is doing. But if we look with the eyes He gives us, with faith, knowing that His Kingdom is ever increasing, knowing that we are watching as He is pouring out His Spirit on all flesh right before our eyes, then we see His Kingdom. Let me conclude with a little story. A friend of mine who is a Chinese historian specializing in the efforts of foreign missionaries before they were evicted after World War II. She was on a trip to find a church
established in the first half of the 1900's by one of those missionaries. It was on the top of a mountain about 7,000 feet up. She and a friend followed a 68year old woman in the rain straight up that mountain. That 'old woman' never stopped to rest the entire time, neither did my friends. One broke a toe; the other a wrist on that climb, but when they got to the top and they were about to walk into that church, my friend prayed “Father, is your fire still in this place and these people?” The next thing she did was to take this picture. When she showed it to me, she said, “I know the Father was answering my prayer and showing me He is still here.”
When she showed it to me I was extremely encouraged in His faithfulness. He is never decreasing only increasing and He is calling all of us to agree with Him and His truth. But it isn't American truth or western truth. His plan includes the whole world and He's asking us to be in agreement with it. The suffering and tenacity of the church in China has to be absorbed and reconciled theologically by the church in the west as being totally in keeping with our Father's great love for mankind and His Bride. My short time here has been about opening my eyes to see things less from a western perspective and more from a Kingdom of God perspective. His Kingdom includes the whole earth and all its people. And His plan for every people is incredible. My hope for this little article is it would encourage you to pray for China. And that those prayers would agree with heaven; “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven...” As you look at the world what do you see? Do you see darkness and calamity all around or do you see His Kingdom breaking forth everywhere you look?

Cody’s CORNER A LEADER IN THE MAKING
by Joyce Meyers
You were built for greatness. You were created to be used for the glory of God; heart, soul, mind, and strength. The greatest man to ever walk the earth desires that you be like Him, great, meek, glorious, a leader of the people. There is a range of influence on your life that you may not have understanding of, yet, but it’s powerful. Joyce Meyers, in her book “A Leader in the Making” takes you through the desires within yourself to be great, why God put them there, and how the He desires them to be fulfilled in your life. Whether you’re a student, dad/mom, business person, or in full-time ministry, you have the opportunity to lead! I hadn’t finished reading the first 2 chapters, when the Lord began to make massive changes in my own heart, even towards myself. Take the time to read this one, it will begin to challenge your character, your thought life, your responses, and your love for the people around you. Did this book make me love Jesus more? Yes! Then it’s worth the read!
THE MUSIC REVIEW By Daniel Fedorchak Dove Award winning male vocalist of the year, Brandon Heath, is back with a new project after having the hit song: “Give Me Your Eyes” which spent 14 weeks at the top of Billboard's Hot Christian AC radio chart. It ranked second for Most Played Song in Christian contemporary radio for 2008. Challenged to grow in his writing, Heath brings us Leaving Eden, which invites the listener to take a journey starting back in the garden with Adam and Eve, seeing the repercussions that have occurred from that moment until now. Brandon’s junior album reminds us that there is a hope in Christ’s return although the narrow road may be a difficult one. Understanding that, only God’s love toward us, His light in us, and His Hope of returning will help get us through. For you pop/rock fans, this album will not disappoint! I see it as a fresh start to the New Year, and a breath of fresh air in Heath’s career. The album offers tracks with beats perfect for driving in your car with both windows rolled down while it also provides a nice balance of ballad driven lyrics that will compel you to think and ponder on the truth about Christ and how real He is! God is revealing something to me more and more: that He is real, He is here, right here with us, and available to love us freely. Leaving Eden will remind you of His steadfast love, and compel you to grow closer to God’s heart.
The Dream Continues
By Nicole Hawkins Once a year, the Civil Rights Movement is celebrated during the month of February, Black History Month. But who helped this movement come about? Those who worked behind the scenes in the Civil Rights Movement were mostly Christians who helped release a revival of justice that changed public opinion and permanent reform. A.D. KING (1930 -1969) Born a pastor’s kid, he wasn’t bent at first towards ministry or education, but he eventually attended college and helped his dad at church. He and Dr. Martin were already involved in open protests against segregation. This led to his leadership in the Birmingham Campaign, where he organized “sit-ins,” where they wouldn’t leave segregated lunch counters. On October 1970, he and 70 others were arrested, along with his brother, Martin, in Birmingham. After his house was bombed, he announced to the Birmingham mob, “My friends, we have had enough problems tonight. If you’re going to kill someone, then kill me. . . Stand up for your rights, but with nonviolence.” In 1968, after his brother’s assassination, he shared the senior pastor role with his dad while still involved in regional grassroots work outreaches in Atlanta. Tragically, less than a year later, he died in an accidental drowning; his oldest daughter, Alveda, now carries on his legacy as a national pro-life pastor and speaker.
Movement. Born in Mississippi, he worked on a plantation while going to school and joining the Navy. He left the military to pursue a life in ministry, and helped launch the famous 1961 Freedom Rides, a controversial integration promotional tour from Washington, D.C. to Jackson, Mississippi, that desegregated transportation on major highways. This put Bevel on Dr. King’s radar. They met and combined their efforts under the SCLC; Bevel became its chairman and spokesman during the 1960s. He organized the 1963 Birmingham Children’s Crusade, where hundreds of elementary and middle school kids marched nonviolently to their City Hall. International outrage came because of dogs and fire hoses used against these kids, and President Kennedy couldn’t stop Bevel. In fact, a 2nd “kids” march was planned but postponed. This 2nd march was the template for the famous Civil Rights march. After witnessing King’s assassination, he continued in non-violent work, and surprised everyone by endorsing Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. He also helped initiate the Million Man March. He died in 2008 of pancreatic cancer. AMELIA BOYTON ROBINSON: Born in Georgia, she wanted to see voting rights permitted for her
people. After her first husband’s death, her home became the hub of the center of Selma's civil rights battles, used by Dr. King to plan the demonstrations known as the "Selma to Montgomery marches". She was chosen to help lead one on March 7, 1965, known as “Bloody Sunday.” She was teargassed and left for dead by Alabama State Troopers, and outrage from that event helped lead to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, where she was a guest of honor when President Lyndon Johnson signed it as law. Robinson met Lyndon LaRouche in 1983, and a year later served as a founding board member of the Schiller Institute. She is now the Vice-Chair of the Institute, which she says is "following in the footsteps of Martin Luther King," according to the Schiller Institute website. She was awarded the Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation Medal of Freedom on July 21, 1990, by the New York State Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation. She still tours and proclaims the importance of civil rights and integration. There were many more that gave their lives for this cause, and it wasn’t just a good idea, but it was a mandate for pastors and their people to stand against injustice. Next issue we will visit new revivalists 40 years later carrying on King’s dream.

THOUGHTS FROM TOM’S CAVE By Tom Wynn Talents, abilities, desires... Take a look back – I'm thinking all of those things seem pretty constant in your life. I'm also pretty sure that when you are calm, you know what they are. Look a little deeper – fears, insecurities, anxieties -- I'm imagining those seem pretty constant too. And, it's okay. We are made how we're made – blonde hair or black – blue eyes or brown. A bucket load of cooking talent or none of that, but perhaps a genius gardener. Whatever, the specifics don't matter that much – certainly not to God. God doesn't waste us, neither does He waste effort on us. All we've been given – the abilities and the limitations – He knows both are useful. He's done His part and will continue to work with us when we work honestly with what we have been given. Our limitations and blindspots are opportunities to learn the grace of submission. (Some might call it “learning to relax”) There really is no need to overestimate our talents or our fears, but there really is an absolute imperative not to underestimate them either. Who do you suppose might be the most perfect guide in discovering those boundaries? Jesus and The Father and The Holy Spirit. They offer us peace to relax in, to hear, and respond to their perfect plan.
GAMING WITH BRIAN The Sly Collection for Playstation 3 The Sly Cooper Games was one of my favorite game series growing up, so naturally when I heard they were coming out with the whole collection in one game, I jumped at the chance to review it. I remembered the heists, beating up the bad guys and escaping the beautiful inspector fox. While I enjoyed recalling all the fun levels and stories again, I was sad to find that Sly was a bit lacking in it’s supposedly “kid friendly” themes. First of all, Sly is a thief. Granted, he is a thief that prefers to steal from other criminals and thieves, but a thief none-the-less. I don’t see this game causing anyone to go out and become a criminal, but the spirit of the idea is there. There is at least one time where you have to steal info from the cops to find out some necessary info on the bad guys. You will also see a couple scenes where the Cooper gang steals from common places like museums or banks. You can also pickpocket criminals to get jewelry and other items for money. While most of the game is sneaking around and beating up bad guys to take back what is yours and stop evil, the game is not shy on making light of this sin. The other issue with this game is Inspector Carmalita Fox’s clothes. While most of the other characters are animals who don’t wear pants, Carmelita’s attire is seriously lacking. While she is one of the few wearing pants, through most of the game, she can be described as wearing a bra with an open jacket. I was very disappointed when I saw this during my research. It’s one thing to have half-naked cartoon animals; it’s another thing all together to dress them in seductive clothing. At first, I was really glad to go back and experience one of my favorite childhood games. But upon considering it again with fresh eyes, my findings left me disenchanted. The Sly Cooper series makes light of a serious sin and dresses at least one of its characters in seductive clothing. Other parts of the game also have to do with voodoo. Over all, I want to recommend the game for its cartoony fun and adventure. But sadly, serious believers should reconsider the spiritual implications before playing this game. Fable III for Xbox 360 If you know about the Fable series, you will know that the game is about choices. This is one of those good vs. evil games where every choice you make alters much of your gaming experience. I figured your ability to choose good could outweigh the bad of this game, but I was wrong. This game deserves its M rating. As in the previous game, there is much you can do in the way of evil. A few of these are killing anyone you meet, getting drunk like there is no tomorrow and expressing rude/inappropriate gestures. The game is not only packed with tons of immorality and sexual immorality, but you also encounter demons and “undead” monsters. The game is also very violent, with little attempt to hide all the blood and unnecessary killing. While the game does provide you with benevolent and moral options, the bad far outweighs the good. The potential of being able to run your own house of prostitution, marry and sleep with both sexes, and massacre whole towns is easily enough to argue why a Christian should not go anywhere near this game. But what if you only want to play the moral character and play the hero? The game will still have you experience its foul language, monstrous creatures, sexual images and pointless brutality. Even the loading screens have immoral images. I think it’s safe to say that Fable III is a spiritually dangerous game made with the good or evil concept in mind, but wrongfully presented. In the end, it leaves you with the “choice” of being horribly depraved or complacently sinful. By Brian Couvillion
GOD END ABORTION, SEND REVIVAL By Nicole Hawkins Saturday, January 22, 2011, marked 38 years that abortion has been legalized in our country. 55 million babies have been aborted since 1973, and on that day, there were marches, speeches, and other events that were sparked around the nation. So what did Orlando do on this day? They came outside their four walls and stood as one man against the death decree of abortion. Pro-life leaders, clergymen, teenagers, young and old came together and held a vigil from 8:30-11am at the Planned Parenthood off Tampa Avenue in Orlando. Almost 200 people came to pray, stand, and worship Jesus in front of the clinic. There were Hispanics and blacks that stood together, fulfilling a prophetic word of the 3rd wave of these minority groups leading in abortion to help take it down!
Jesus as the ruling authority through his people.
The day was hardly silent; there were residents who honked and yelled at those who prayed and stood silently. The sidewalk counselors who pleaded with clinic escorts and patients to reconsider with sprinklers running seemed an unfriendly reminder of the pro-life presence there. Many pastors, such as Larry Ramirez with Resound, Father Scott from St. James Cathedral, Corry Robinson from Victorious Living Fellowship, came to pray for the employees, patients, and doctors and declare the name of
200 people are not even 1% of the population of Orlando… it’s a remnant… but it’s a start! If the Lord can use 12 to flip the world upside down in Acts 17:6-7, surely he can multiply 200 into 10,000 to stand statewide against abortion. Let this be the last anniversary of Roe v. Wade; God end abortion and send revival!
