Wildlife in the Urban Jungle Nicholas Read hen we think of wild animals, we don’t immediately associate them with the cities we live in. But a closer look soon reveals that we share our urban environment with a great many untamed creatures. Heavily illustrated with color photographs throughout and full of entertaining and informative facts, City Critters examines how and why so many wild animals choose to live in places that, on first glance at least, seem contrary to their needs.
How do those deer, raccoons, squirrels, skunks, coyotes, crows, gulls and geese—not to mention the alligators, eagles, otters and snakes—manage to survive in the big city? What special skills do city critters have that many of their wilderness cousins lack? Why have they developed these skills? And what are our responsibilities in ensuring that these animals can continue to share our city lives? Nicholas Read is a journalist, a teacher and a lifelong animal lover. Before joining the faculty of journalism at Langara College, Nicholas wrote about animals and the environment for the Vancouver Sun newspaper and hosted a weekly radio show about animal rights. He has written four other children’s books about animals, including two about the Great Bear Rainforest with photographer and conservationist Ian McAllister. Nicholas Read lives in Vancouver with two rescued cats. When Elephants Fight Eric Walters and Adrian Bradbury his ancient proverb is as true today as when the words were first spoken, perhaps thousands of years ago. Its essence is simplicity—when the large fight, it is the small who suffer most. And when it comes to war, the smallest, the most vulnerable, are the children.

When Elephants Fight presents the stories of five children—Annu, Jimmy, Nadja, Farooq and Toma— from five very different and distinct conflicts—Lanka, Uganda, Sarajevo, Afghanistan and the Sudan. Along with these very personal accounts, the book also offers brief analyses of the history and geopolitical issues that are the canvas on which these conflicts are cast. Eric Walters is one of Canada’s most successful writers for young readers. He is the only threetime winner of the Ontario Library Association Silver Birch Award and has made presentations to over 750,000 children across the country. Adrian Bradbury is cofounder and director of GuluWalk, a foundation dedicated to supporting the abandoned children of northern Uganda. Themes: effects of war on children Praise for When Elephants Fight: “Bradbury’s personal experience with children in northern Uganda lends credence to these narratives, and readers will share his sympathies with these innocent victims.” —Kirkus Reviews “[Walters and Bradbury] provide a thoughtful historical and political analysis to assist young readers— along with many an older reader understandably confused by world events—in seeing how these conflicts arise…The tales provide a fresh and vibrant voice that needs to be heard.” —Quill & Quire

THE FINAL INSTALLMENT OF THE
DESERT LEGENDS TRILOGY Victorio’s War The Desert Legends Trilogy, Volume 3 John Wilson im Doolen discovered his father’s fate in Written in Blood and met Billy the Kid in Ghost Moon. Now, in the final installment of The Desert Legends Trilogy, he’s a scout for the Army in the middle of a brutal war to force Victorio’s Apaches onto a reservation far from their traditional lands.
Deeply troubled by the violence he’s witnessed and been a part of, and having lost so many friends, both white and Indian, Jim feels trapped between the two worlds he’s encountered over the past three years. Captured by his nemesis Ghost Moon and forced to flee with an Apache band of warriors, Jim is only saved from a slow and torturous death when his old friend Wellington adopts him as his son. But now he’s on the wrong side. Will he be branded a traitor? Or killed in a battle with the 10th US Cavalry or the Mexican Army? Jim finds his loyalties now divided, and he begins to understand the plight of his captors. But as supplies and ammunition run out, Jim’s fate is tied to that of the doomed Apache warriors and survival seems unlikely. Along with The Desert Legends Trilogy, John Wilson has written more than thirty books for juveniles, teens and adults. His self-described “addiction to history” has resulted in many awardwinning novels that bring the past alive for readers young and not-so-young. Wilson spends signifi cant portions of the year traveling across the country speaking in schools, leaving his audiences excited about our past and its relevance to our lives today.

Reaching Reluctant Readers
What is a Reluctant Reader r Reluctant readers are those who, for whatever reason, do not like to read.
What are Hi-Lo books s Hi-Lo books from Orca Book Publishers are short, high-interest novels, written at a lower reading level but with age-appropriate plots, characters and storylines. These books feature linear storylines, limited vocabulary and contemporary topics.
Hi-Lo Books for the Reluctant Reader Effective Hi-Lo fiction for reluctant readers features strong realistic protagonists that the reader cares about. Exciting plots and interesting themes are also key elements. The subject matter is relevant and sometime controversial, which enables the reader to become emotionally attached and invested. The dialogue is authentic, lively and varied. Vocabulary and sentence structure is accessible without being patronizing through oversimplification.
“Quality teen fiction, relevant to our students’ lives, can and should be our point of entry with reluctant struggling readers. Teen fiction of this caliber is available, and it is time to provide new options for reading that let our students experience how great it feels to finish a book and how much fun it can be to escape reality by getting involved in a great story.”
— Carolyn Salonen
Program Curriculum Consultant, Waterloo Regional District School Board
Making the case for high quality reluctant reader fiction.
Literacy starts in the classroom. Recent studies suggest that nearly 50 percent of North Americans struggle with literacy to some extent.* *According
to Statistics Canada’s International Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (2003) and the U.S. Department of Education’s National Adult Literacy Survey (2002)
E n gagi n g Students: Effective reading instruction focuses on a student’s personal interests and includes diverse reading material. Readers can be alienated if the material they are provided with has no connection to their world. Reluctant readers need material that extends their thinking and allows them to make meaningful connections with literature.
I ndependent Readi n g: Providing classroom time to read is an effective way to develop literacy skills. Students have diverse interests and need to be able to selfselect appropriate material and to learn to read at their own pace. Independent reading can also teach them that reading can be enjoyable— and rewarding.
At-level M aterial: For reluctant and struggling readers, material must not only be meaningful and engaging, but must be at an appropriate reading level. Students who struggle with comprehension and vocabulary will have difficulty connecting to the text. Providing novels that reluctant readers have the skills to read to completion allows them to enjoy success in reading. This success instills confidence, encourages further reading, and can be a catalyst for improved student behavior. If we can get reluctant readers to enjoy books, we have the opportunity to teach the skills they require to improve their comprehension. Quality fiction that supports students at their reading level provides the best opportunity to motivate students to read.
That’s where Orca Book Publishers comes in…
The Orca Soundings were developed in 2002 in response to requests from teachers and librarians for books that appeal to teen reluctant readers. The goal was to develop a series that fosters an appreciation for reading and motivates students to move on to more challenging books.
With reading levels between grade 2.0 and grade 4.5, these books present themes that appeal to teen readers while being simple enough in terms of construction and plot development that less-confident readers can succeed in mastering reading.
With the success of the Orca Soundings, other series were created for reluctant readers in middle school (Orca Currents), for students interested in sports (Orca Sports) and for adults (Rapid Reads).

“Orca Soundings are my first choice when shopping for reluctant teen readers. The stories are extremely relevant. When students tell me they hate reading and all the books are boring, I take them to my Orca shelf. Once they try one Orca Soundings title, they want to read them all!” —Tori Jensen, Media Specialist, John Glenn Middle School, MN
“When I was the YA librarian at Hays Public Library, our first few copies of the Orca Soundings series needed little booktalking. They disappeared off the shelves, grabbed eagerly by teens drawn in by the appealing covers and discreet paperback size. Teens who ordinarily wouldn’t call themselves readers became regular patrons because of their love for Orca Soundings!” —Erin Downey Howerton, School Liaison, Johnson County Library Overland Park, KS
“I have been sold on the Orca Soundings line ever since I purchased the first titles in 2003. I have been talking it up for several years to both public and school librarians and parents! It is the only series I know that combines a low reading level with a wide variety of topics interesting to teen readers. Teens are able to experience both a reading success and a great read! —Patricia Foster, Salt Lake Co. Library System, Riverton, UT

A Winter Kill Vicki Delany
When reputation means more than reality, the truth can be hard to find. icole Patterson is a young, green and very eager probationary constable with the Ontario Provincial Police. Although she spends much of her time breaking up bar fights, giving out traffic tickets and finding lost kids, she dreams of one day becoming a detective.
Late one bitterly cold winter night, she comes across the body of a young woman lying on the edge of a snow-covered field on the outskirts of town. The girl appears to have been strangled. Nicole recognizes the victim as a local high school student with a somewhat sullied reputation, the daughter of the town drunk. Though both under-qualified and unauthorized, Nicole feels compelled to throw herself into the murder investigation. Was the murdered girl really as promiscuous as her classmates described or the victim of bullying? What was her relationship with the star of the football team? And what is the significance of the ring with the large blue stone found near her body? Is Nicole Patterson herself heading for trouble by pretending to be a detective? Vicki Delany is one of Canada’s most prolific and varied crime writers. She writes everything from stand-alone novels of psychological suspense, to the Constable Molly Smith books, a traditional police procedural series set in the British Columbia Interior, to a light-hearted historical series set in the raucous heyday of the Klondike Gold Rush. Vicki now enjoys the rural life in bucolic Prince Edward County, Ontario, where she grows vegetables, eats tomatoes, shovels snow and rarely wears a watch.
