The Secret of the Village Fool by Rebecca Upjohn & illustrated by Renné Benoit

The true story of an unlikely hero who saved a family and two orphan girls Based on a true story

When the war brings Nazi soldiers to town, life changes. The Nazis begin rounding up Jewish boys like Milek and Munio. Anton worries about them and comes up with a plan to hide the whole family in his own home, putting his life at risk without a thought.

about the author When REBECCA UPJOHN heard of Anton’s powerful story, it seemed a natural fit for her. The author of the picture book Lily and the Paper Man and Patrick’s Wish and the chapter book The Last Loon, she is interested in characters who reach out to help others. She divides her time between New Hampshire and Ontario.

The back of the book outlines what happened to Anton and the others after the war, and includes photographs. Anton was honored both by Poland and by the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, where he was named one of the Righteous Among the Nations.

themes: the holocaust, racism, bravery

Milek and his brother, Munio, live in a sleepy village in Poland, where nothing exciting seems to happen. They do have an odd neighbor, though. The rest of the village laughs at Anton because he has strange habits. He speaks to animals, feeds the flies, and only eats vegetables. Most people call him the Village Fool.

From the team that brought to life Lily and the Paper Man, Blue Spruce finalist and ForeWord Book of the Year winner.

We Are Their Voice

Young People Respond to the Holocaust by Kathy Kacer, with Karen Krasny, Alan Gotlib, Susan Gordin, and Shawntelle Nesbitt

That’s the question that prompted a writing project across North America, Italy, and Australia asking young people to share their ideas about this time in history. Students wrote short stories. Some discussced the impact of books they had read and wrote about the messages that they understood from these books. Several interviewed survivors and recorded their impressions. Many talked about how they have tried to make sense of this history in the world in which they now live. Others created works of art. Children wrote from their hearts with sensitivity, thoughtfulness, and great insight. Their teachers saw this opportunity as a gift. Young people can make a meaningful connection to the Holocaust. And perhaps, with that in mind, they will be able to create a more peaceful future. Read their stories. Listen to their perceptions and observations. We have so much to learn from them.

about the author Kathy Kacer travels widely talking about the importance of remembering the Holocaust and how to talk about it with young people. She has written many award-winning books in the Holocaust Remembrance Series, including To Hope and Back, The Diary of Laura’s Twin, Hiding Edith, and The Secret of Gabi’s Dresser. She embarked on this project with educators Karen Krasny, Alan Gotlib, Susan Gordin, and Shawntelle Nesbitt because they wanted to prove that young people do feel a meaningful connection to the Holocaust.

An excerpt from one student’s letter to Otto Frank, after visiting the Anne Frank house: “I cannot imagine what it would have been like for you and your family not to stand on green grass or smell fresh air – not to do the simple things that I take for granted.… I am writing you this letter now, not because my teacher, mother, friends, or family told me to, but because my heart did.… You were able to live the unimaginable and then move forward. For that I would like to say thank you.” —Rachel Meyerovitz, Grade 8, Robbins Hebrew Academy, Toronto.

Napi’s Dance by Alanda Greene

Two women, one Blackfoot and one white, live out the history of Southern Alberta Napi’s Dance narrates the tale of two women in 19th century Alberta: Snake Woman, from the Blackfoot Blood tribe, and Eleanor, a young woman of English/ Irish descent who arrives on the prairies with her homesteading parents. The story of these women is the story of the history of Canada, as two different cultures and ways of life come face to face for the first time. Marked differences emerge in attitudes about land, spirituality, responsibility, and sense of purpose. In the mid-1800s, southern Alberta was dominated by the tribes of the Blackfoot Confederacy. Snake Woman and her tribe have kept the trader and settler invasions at bay and on their terms, but this control is finally eroding, the buffallo are gone, killed off with great disruption to her people and to the land that they know so well. When Eleanor arrives in Alberta, she feels like she has come home. As she struggles to come to terms with the landscape and its inhabitants, she becomes curious about the Native peoples. A chance encounter with Snake Woman entwines their paths, as they conspire to see a Native artifact returned to its rightful place.

Alanda Greene was born in Calgary. She later spent 24 years teaching at the local school in Kootenay Bay, BC. During this time she wrote many articles for education magazines, completed a B. Ed and wrote and illustrated a book for middle school educators. After leaving teaching, she managed the small bookstore at the Yasodhara Ashram. She still works there, now engaged with the ashram land exploration. Her childhood was spent listening to her father, a historian, tell stories about the history of southern Alberta, and after forming a writing group with friends she began exploring the questions she still had about southern Alberta. From that exploration came Napi’s Dance. Alanda makes her home in Kootenay Bay, BC.

But Hope is Longer

Surviving the Country Called Breast Cancer

by Tamara Levine

A survivor’s letters provide reassurance and guidance for other women navigating cancer More practical than a simple memoir, Tamara Levine’s book combines personal insight with information provided by the medical professionals who helped her navigate through her diagnosis and treatment. When Tamara received her diagnosis, in a state of shock, she decided to inform her friends and colleagues by writing to them. That e-mail was the first of thirteen communications – some heartbreaking, some inspiring, and some challenging – in which she shared her “healing journey.” As well as sharing the letters, Tamara tells us what she learned maneuvering through the “black hole” of cancer treatment. Her journey may be personal, but what she describes is universal.

Tamara Levine is a long-time adult educator, literacy activist, and feminist. She has worked with unions and employers to pioneer workplace literacy and clear language initiatives across Canada with the Ontario Federation of Labour and the Canadian Labour Congress. She retired from her job as National Education Representative at the CLC in 2011 following breast cancer, treatment, and recovery. Previously, she worked in federal citizenship and women’s programs and was active in health and safety in the workplace. She lives in Ottawa with her family.

about the author

We learn that all health care is not equal, that not all medical people are wonderful, and that not everyone should or will deal with the world of cancer in the same way. Tamara discusses vulnerabilities and fears, the impact of both financial and personal supports, the need to make choices, and the necessity for advocacy. A key addition are the voices of Tamara’s health care providers, including her oncologist, who wade in further, outlining options, critiquing their own systems, and generally providing insights that families struggling with cancer could find invaluable.

Support the Girls Bra Art for Breast Health Compiled by the West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation

Can a book about breast health be both beautiful and funny? This one is. When the women from a community in Central Ontario needed to raise funds to buy a mammogram machine for the local hospital, it wasn’t laughter that led them to the “Art Bra” project. More likely, it was the fear of breast cancer and the need for early detection that motivated them. But the result is full of fun and whimsy, as people from across the country responded to their call to craft an “art bra,” sending in their creations along with the stories behind them. You will smile at the bras that have been turned into works of art, with names like “Got Milk,” “Lucky Charms,” “Go, Girls, Go,” and “Cradles of Civilization.” The book showcases over fifty bras, with accompanying personal stories that celebrate the curative power of laughter. Even hockey greats Bobby Orr and Sidney Crosby have gotten into the act by signing “sports bras.”

the “bra-artistas” are an eclectic group inspired by the whimsy of the project and stirred by the cause of women’s breast health. They started with two brave women who wore two specially crafted art-bras at an International Women’s Retreat in Northern Canada, to the delight of the more than 100 women in the audience. After this event, witty Art-bras began to pour into the West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation from across the country, and eventually around the world.

Special events during October, Breast Cancer Month The original project raised over $700,000 for a new mammogram machine

Writing the Revolution by Michele Landsberg

Michele Landsberg on the front lines of the women’s movement One of the most respected voices in Canadian feminism, two-time National Newspaper Awardwinning journalist Michele Landsberg has engaged with the women’s movement more than any other writer in the country. Her opinions, always careful and sometimes controversial, have mattered to women’s lives. For 25 years, between 1978 to 2005, Michele wrote a highly influential column in The Toronto Star, recording and interpreting history from the front lines of the feminist movement. In this volume, Michele brings us a collection of her favourite columns. With her trademark blend of kindness, toughness, bluntness and humor, she reflects on when she was right, when she was wrong, what was happening behind the scenes, and what has happened since. “Ms. Landsberg’s forum provided a much-needed voice for those among us who could not speak up nor out … on issues of gender and equality. We counted on her to speak for us, to lobby politicians and various grand poobahs of big biz alike; and, to her everlasting credit, Ms. Landsberg never disappointed us.” —Judith Fitzgerald for The Globe and Mail

Michele Landsberg began her career with The Globe and Mail in the 1960s. She joined Chatelaine Magazine in the 1970s, under the editorship of leading feminist Doris Anderson. She is the author of three best-selling books: Women and Children First, Michele Landsberg’s Guide to Children’s Books and “This is New York, Honey!”. She continues her work as an activist, and is a regular reviewer of children’s literature on CBC Radio. Michele lives in Toronto with her husband, Stephen Lewis, and their family. The Feminist History Society is a project of the Women’s Education and Research Foundation of Ontario Incorporated.

Lisa and Sol board the luxury ocean liner St. Louis in Hamburg, Germany on May 13, 1939. Lisa and her family are in first class; Sol and his parents are below in tourist class. Both children have mixed feelings – they’re excited to be beginning this voyage to a better life, but sad to be leaving their old lives behind. They are Jewish, as are almost all of the 937 passengers on board, and although war has not been officially declared in Europe, the Nazis have been persecuting Jews for years. As the ship sets sail for Cuba, the atmosphere is optimistic. The passengers feel fortunate to have been able to buy landing permits, and their German captain, Gustave Shroeder, is determined to get them to safety. The captain’s voice alternates with Sol and Lisa’s, revealing the details passengers didn’t know. As Hitler’s propaganda machine turns Cuba against them, the mood on board changes to despair. The St. Louis and its Jewish passengers are turned away – first from Cuba, then the United States, and then Canada.

It is 2008, and thirteen-year-old Shannen and the other students at J.R. Nakogee Elementary are tired of attending class in portables that smell and don’t keep out the freezing cold winter air. They make a YouTube video describing the poor conditions, and their plea for a decent school gains them attention and support from community leaders and children across the country. Inspired, the students decide to turn their grade-eight class trip into a visit to Ottawa, to speak to the Canadian government. Once there, Shannen speaks passionately to the politicians about the need to give Native children the opportunity to succeed. The following summer, Shannen is nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize. Her passion, and that of the other students, makes politicians stand up and take notice, and becomes a rallying point for the community and for the country. Shannen will never see her dream fulfilled. Tragically, she was killed in a car crash in 2010. Her family, friends, and supporters are continuing to fight and to honor her memory as they work for equality for children in communities everywhere.

Emily Included by Kathleen McDonnell

Emily, born with cerebral palsy, fights for her right to go to school with her peers Based on a true story

Emily’s fight to be treated like a “normal,” everyday kid in a regular classroom, at a time when children with CP were segregated, was groundbreaking. Her story makes her an amazing role model for children everywhere – whether they are living with a disability or not. Hackmatack Children’s Choice Book Award Finalist for 2012/13!

themes: disability, inclusivity, social activism

Emily Eaton was born with severe cerebral palsy. Denied access to classes at her local school, she and her parents challenged the local board of education in their Ontario community for her right to be educated with non-disabled children in a regular classroom. Her case went all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada in the late nineties and is considered a breakthrough for inclusive education for both physically and mentally challenged people. Emily went on to graduate from high school proving the skeptics wrong.
