What Are Your Values? Before answering this question, we need to define what values are. Your values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. They generally determine your priorities. Deep down they are probably the measures you use to tell if your life is turning out the way you want it to. When what you do and how you behave match your values, you usually experience loving your life. But when your actions aren’t aligned with your values that can be a real source of unhappiness. This is why identifying your values is so important. Your life can be much easier when you are clear about your values and make plans and take actions that are consistent with them. Values are usually fairly stable but they don't have strict limits or boundaries. Over time your values may change. Keeping in touch with your values is a lifelong commitment. It is important to periodically revisit this work, especially if you start to feel unbalanced and you cannot put your finger on why. As you go through the value work, keep focused on what is important to you now as values that were important in the past may not be relevant today. We are going to starting by looking back on your life to identify times when you felt really good, and really confident that you were making good choices. Find examples in both your career and personal life to ensure balance. 1) What were you doing? 2) Were you with other people? Who else was there? 3) What factors contributed to your happiness in those situations?

Identifying and understanding your values is a challenging and important exercise. Your values are a central part of who you are and who you want to be.
