D’MELLO HOUSE Semester 3

D’MELLO HOUSE

S3 STUDIO

Walter D’Mello is a Goan sculptor who has moved to Trivandrum with his family of five. He would like to reside in a ‘house which like his own work defies the gravitational pull of conventions, that which can be moulded like the earth, that which reflects their emotions and can yet be belonging to the land’. Assuming to be the sculptor himself a sculpture was made which attempted to incorporate the sculptor’s style and which is in accordance with the above mentioned qualities. LEFT: Deconstructed Bottle Sculpture The concept was developed by notions of human perception and understanding of existent forms.Breaking and reconfiguring a familiar form was translated as an attempt to architecturally deconstruct conventional residential spaces.

OPPOSITE PAGE: Wire-mesh models derived from the physical properaties of the sculpture.Instersection volumes, transparency, lightness and fluidity are the key characteristics derived.

of

STAGE1 Deconstructed bottle was used to derive surfaces and lines of the D’Mello House

STAGE 2 Wire-mesh was used to create another round of sketch models that incorporates the surfaces obtined from stage 1

The idea was to design a residence for a sculptor and his family. The main objective was to integrate the character of the family and their activities and also express the nature of work of the sculptor himself - a design that the defied gravity of conventions like his sculptures at the same time exploring the relationship between man, his natural and built enviroment.

ARTVILLE, NETTAYAM Semester 5

The emerging city of Trivandrum has brought a burst of vibrance with hybrid cultures. Culture as reflected through visual and communicative medium however lacks a befitting venue. The design aims to provide a wholesome campus to nurture and showcase art and culture.

Artists’ Quarters

ARTVILLE, NETTAYAM S5 STUDIO

Nettayam is a town set on the hilly outskirts of Trivandrum city. The site is a continuation of the sprawling natural sanctuary of Nettayam. The site provides the perfect setting for an artists’ convention centre. ABOVE: A series of drawings were generated by hand to arrive at a suitable zoning of spaces, and create relationship with one another. This involved a back and forth process of creating line and block diagrams and models. OPPOSITE PAGE: Clockwise from left, roof plan, floor plan and elevation of library block, CAD drawing: Plan of restaurant space, schematic section of site through auditorium , restaurant and artists’ quarters.

RIGHT: Site Drawing The challenge of the project was to manage the steep, contoured terrain and at the same time manipulate it creatively to fit the purpose. The program of 5 major spaces: auditorium, library, studio, restaurant and residential block was zoned by site factors and exploded maintaining adjacency. The spaces in between spaces were carved out by the natural lines of the connecting pathways.

The design is evolved by exploding a program of required spaces and keeping them connected by pathways and serpentine ramps that merge into the natural terrain and the built form.

LEVATE SITE

ICONICITY

USER-GROUP

The Kazhakuttam area is populated by young business, IT professionals and their small families. There a travelling population which includes business personnel, students, budget travellers.

Near Infosys Campus, Kazhakuttom, Trivandrum, which is one of the fastest growing development centres of the state. The site is located along te NH47 connecting major IT centres, several tourist spots and major suburbs of Trivandrum.

Hotels are an important typology of buildings that bring out the iconicity of a place. Hence the proposed building intends to project the growing urban sub-culture of Kazhakuttom.

ENERGY CONCERN

Aesthetic elements can double as energy producing elements. Photovoltaic glass panels are a new innovative solution to address this need. One sq.ft of PV glass can absorb as muc as 30-40W of power/annum

Function

Energy- Efficient Aesthetic

The objective was to design a budget hotel with basic facilities including a restaurant, a banquet space, a conference room and guest rooms. Other back of house facilities like kitchen, house keeping, staff rooms etc were also to be considered. Rules of KMBR were to be adhered to while calculating the quantity and quality of the rendered service. Building services were to be provided appropriately following safety and minimum standards as precribed by the NBC and KMBR.

The Ulloor Smarakam is a memorial built in honour of Ulloor S.Parameswara Iyer, one of the famous triumvirate poets of 20th century Kerala. The renovation mainly was to rejuvenate and restore the building and site to its original intended purpose as a research institution. Research conducted on the life and works of the poet combined with contextual studies provided valuable pointers to concept development.

IT’S MY CITY Competition Entry First Runner Up Crossroads 2014, MBCET

The design challenge was to identify the drawbacks of the urban planning of Trivandrum and suggest a creative solution in order to address these problems. The given site is near Thampanoor , which is the nerve centre of business and trade in the district as well as the principal terminal for rail and road transport. The design process involved two main stages: The first involved identifying the emerging identity of Trivandrum as a rising metropolis, a port city and business centre in addition to its primary status as the administrative capital of Kerala and also an educational centre. Next the consquences of this identity shift were investigated, the most critical of which is the population influx. Thampanoor therefore is directly subject to the extra load of floating pedestrian population. The proposed design solution attempts to introduce a new typology of public building which recognises the need for space for the sake of space. The building is a “diffusing centre which helps disperse the incoming floating population offering them with basic needs of a traveller. The program includes these services on 3 levels zoned by priority of need.
