ISLAMABAD:TheSenateStandingCommitteeonMaritimeAffairsonTuesdayexpressedconcernand dismayovertheadministrativecrisisinthePakistanNationalShippingCorporation(PNSC),triggeredby therefusaloftheformerchairmantohandoverchargetohissuccessor,onthebasisofastayorder.The committeemeeting,presidedoverbySenatorRubinaKhalid,wasinformedthatPrimeMinisterShehbaz SharifhadappointedRearAdmiralJawadAhmedasthechairmanofthePNSConAugust5andthenew chairmanwenttothePNSCheadquartersthesamedaytotakecharge.However,theformerchairmanof thestate-ownedentity,MrRizwanAhmed,refusedtovacatetheofficeonthegroundsthathehad obtainedastayorderfromtheSindhHighCourt.
Thecommitteesaidthatnon-compliancewiththeprimeminister’sorderwasacriminaloffence,andthe chairpersonofthecommitteedirectedtheMinistryofMaritimeAffairstotakesternactionagainstMr Ahmedandcurtailhisfinancialandadministrativepowers.Thecommitteewasinformedbyofficialsof theministrythattherewereallegedmisappropriationinthepurchaseofvesselsinthePNSC.

Inreplytoqueries,PNSCofficialsinformedthecommitteethatrecently,ontheinstructionsoftheformer chairmanofPNSC,twovesselshadbeenpurchasedfor$42.75millionwhichwere14.5yearsoldand theycouldbefurtherusedonlyforthenext5.5years.Membersofthecommitteeexpressedconcernover theinformationgiventothepanelandsoughtfurtherdetailsofthematterfromtheofficialsconcerned.

ThecommitteemeetingalsodiscussedproblemsrelatedtoGwadartechnicalandvocationalinstituteand GwadarPort.TheChairmanofGwadarPortAuthority,NaseerKhanKashani,informedthepanelabout introductionofcoursesinthePakistan-ChinaTechnicalandVocationalInstitute,Gwadar.
HesaidthatmeetingswerebeingheldwithofficialsofShandongInstituteofCommerceandTechnology (SICT)foranexchangeprogrammetointroducemorecoursesintheGwadarinstitute.
ThecommitteewasalsoinformedbyMrKashanithatmeetingswerebeingheldwiththeShandong InstituteofCommerceandTechnology(SICT)tointroducecommercecoursesinthePakistan-China TechnicalandVocationalInstitute,Gwadar.Thechairpersonofthecommitteeencouragedthestepand saidthattheobjectiveofthevocationalinstitutewastoequipstudentswithtechnicalskillsandefforts shouldbemadetostartcoursesattheinstituteattheearliest.
ThecommitteewasinformedthatPC-1wasunderconsiderationfortheacquisitionoftheremainingland fortheGwadarPortanditwouldbesubmittedtotheMinistryofPlanningandDevelopmentforapproval shortly.
