CORPORACIÓN AMIGOS DE LOS PARQUES DE LA PATAGONIA Protecting our natural legacy, its beauty and biodiversity.
About us. Amigos de los Parques is a network of people united around the conviction that National Parks are a development option and the soundest conservation strategy for long-term protection of our ecosystem. Parks
landscapes of Chile, are a source of national pride and prosperity, and provide settings for recreation, spiritual renovation and
economic dynamism in the areas around them. National Parks connect us to the vitality of the natural world, and their beauty speaks to the plenitude of life, motivating us to reflect upon the harmony between ecology and society. Amigos de los Parques is a network that emerges out of a desire to nurture and build the public value of National Parks and foster the role of civil society in their protection. We believe that a more robust national park system is our best option to conserve our natural heritage, guarantee access to this public good and significantly contribute to the economic development of neighboring communities through conservation-related tourism.
Protected Patagonia in numbers: • 91% of the land protected under the national park system in Chile is in Patagonia. • 3 regions • 17 parks Our strategy: Corporación Amigos de los Parques proposes to build the Chilean national park system along 4 lines of action: • Citizen awareness: We emphasize the public, democratic and transformative character of National Parks and we urge civil society to visit them, value them and act in favor of their protection. • Public policies: We foster public debate to generate policies that lead to a more robust institution for Public Parks, support their proper operations, and stimulate
conservation. • Activities:
participative opportunities in National Parks and promote the installation of infrastructure that guarantees their public access, enabling more Chileans to connect to their National Parks. • Fundraising: We work to increase public and private investment in National Parks.

10 PRINCIPLES 1.- We believe that National Parks are the greatest and soundest opportunity to guarantee long-term ecosystemic protection on a large scale. They are essential if we want to halt the species extinction crisis, mitigate climate change and maintain the natural processes that shape the diversity of life on our planet. 2.- We emphasize the public, democratic and transformative
protected areas belong to everybody; they keep us connected to the wild and beautiful, driving us to strengthen the balance between citizenry and nature. 3.- We see National Parks as engines of harmonious development for Chile and for Chilean Patagonia through conservation-related tourism: protected areas economically stimulate neighboring communities, generating investment and employment. 4.- We promote environmental education and scientific research with the aim of inspiring a culture of appreciation and valuing of our National Parks, which enables us to visualize them as sources of
pride and belonging,
motivating citizens to protect and safeguard them. 5.- We collaborate with the government to strengthen public and private investment in National Parks and stimulate policies that lead to a more robust institutional system of protected areas and ensure their proper operation.
6.- We stimulate the economic dynamism generated by National Parks and we support local development in neighboring communities in relation to protected areas, drawing attention to these as a source of inspiration to undertake and create a network of tourism-related services that foster balanced growth, in keeping with the capacity of the destinations. 7.- We highlight the singularity of our National Parks and we promote the “Patagonian Parks Route that connects us to our natural wonders and projects an image of Chile around the world as a unique and memorable natural destination. 8.- We defend our National Parks, their proper care, good administration, public access and ongoing improvements,
ecosystems remain intact, harmonious and free. 9.- We foster the synergy between national and international entities,
contributions for the preservation of our ecosystems and their evolutionary processes. 10- We call on as many citizens and leaders as possible from the public and private sphere to join in the challenge of building our National Park system and furthering
development. We propose to activate the culture of Chilean National Parks, mobilizing and sensitizing society around its invaluable natural heritage: our most beautiful and prized national resource.
“In Parks ...we recontact both certainty and uncertainty, the permanent and the changing, the stable and the spontaneous, the predictable and the novel ... We confront order and chaos. We go wild; we go where the Earth is still wild.” -Holmes Rolston III
