Waterford's Chia Bia wins 'Best Exporter' at National Enterprise Awards Chia Bia from Tramore in County Waterford has won the top „Export‟ award at this year‟s National Enterprise Awards in Dublin Castle, organised by the County and City Enterprise Boards. The Waterford-based health food company and Ireland's largest supplier of chia seeds, has become the first business in Waterford to take home a top accolade at the prestigious National Enterprise Awards 2013 in 21 years. The Enterprise Boards set up the National Enterprise Awards in the late 1990s to celebrate the achievements of Ireland‟s micro-enterprise sector. Speaking in Dublin Castle, Minister Richard Bruton T.D. said: “A key part of the Government‟s Action Plan for Jobs is driving entrepreneurship and start-up companies, enabling indigenous businesses to grow and create. It is also very important to recognise and celebrate small business success stories and through the National Enterprise Awards, the Enterprise Boards are showcasing the success stories of small business owners from all over the country.” Since setting up in Tramore in 2009, Chia Bia has launched eight different chia seed products, which are on sale through 1,250 outlets in Ireland and the UK. The company, supported by the Waterford County Enterprise Board, also trades in North America, the Middle East and Scandinavia. The company was founded by Barrie Rogers and Ray Owens with six full-time and two part-time members of staff. Chia Bia has been grant-aided by the Waterford County Enterprise Board, which nominated the joint company founders for the competition. CEO of the Waterford County Enterprise Board, Anike Tyrrell, was the first to congratulate the company. She said: “Chia Bia is clearly leading the field when it comes to growing export markets for health-related products… By looking beyond the domestic opportunities, Barrie Rogers, Ray Owens and their hard-working team are helping to lead our county‟s economic recovery, through export growth.” Further details about the supports available to micro-enterprises in County Waterford are available through
