Chess is one of the most powerful educational tools available to strengthen a child’s mind. Chess enhances concentration, patience, and perseverance, and develops creativity, intuition and memory. Most importantly chess improves the ability to analyse and deduce from a set of general principles and teaches how to make tough decisions and solve problems flexibly. Learning chess allows pupils to foster critical, creative and original thinking.

Opportunities will be made available for matches against other schools and to play in tournaments. Each year the children enter the UK Chess Challenge tournament. This is the biggest event of its kind in the world, with over 70,000 children taking part. Both groups are limited in numbers: The Pre-Prep group a maximum of 12 pupils and the Prep group a maximum of 20 pupils only. CO D I NG CLU B

Code Club is for children who are interested in learning to design and code computer games. They will learn how to create their own worlds and develop characters to carry out missions there. Attendance at Code Club does not assume a level of coding ability, just an interest in programming.
The languages used are not those used in the Computing curriculum; the sessions will, however, help to grow skills covered in the lessons. Year 3 and 4 will use Kodu to create games that can be played on the laptop. Years 5-8 will have the opportunity to use Kodu but will also use Minecraft Education Edition, a version of Minecraft in which users write code to control the characters and worlds.
