Merit System Awards Outstanding Performances By Becca Salamone

Don’t we all like to get credit for the hard work we put in training and showing our horses? With ASHA’s Merit System, the horse and rider team are awarded merit points for outstanding performances. The current merit point scheme seeks to award the hard work and dedication of committed ASHA members. How does it work? The points structure awards horse and rider combinations in both the Open and Non Pro divisions of approved American Stock Horse Association shows. Merit points may only be awarded in one division at any one show. The horse/rider combination must show in all four classes for their division, and the number of points awarded is based on the number of entries in the All-Around or High Point division, up to a

maximum of ten (10) points. Can you change riders and still receive points? A horse may receive points with more than one rider, but the points cannot be combined for more than one rider nor can points be transferred to another rider. Horses that change riders must start over in accumulating points for the Superior and Supreme Awards. What are the top Merit Award Honors? Horse/Rider Teams may receive Superior and Supreme Awards for excellent performances.

earned at different shows. Records of the points are kept and certificates are presented to the rider (and the owner, if different from the rider). The same is true for the Supreme Stock Horse Versatility Award, except that at least 200 ASHA Merit Points must be earned. ! Source: ASHA

Merit Points earned from the two different divisions may be combined as long as they are

American Stock Horse Association Affiliates Region 5 Region 1 Oklahoma Stock Horse Association The Oklahoma Stock Horse Association was started by a group of people interested in promoting the American Stock Horse Association’s philosophy and mission of creating better horses and better horsemen. The OkSHA was established as a nonprofit Oklahoma organization in August of 2009. They applied and were accepted as an affiliate of the American Stock Horse Association shortly thereafter.

Region 2 Alabama Stock Horse Association The purpose of the Alabama Stock Horse Association is to provide opportunities for horsemen and horsewomen to learn to train and show a horse that is broke, relatively safe, and versatile enough to do whatever a person wants to do with it. We want to help riders “git r done” with their horses whether they are rich or poor, old or young, expert or amateur. We will find a way to include a person in our program and help them ride a better horse no matter what their skill level or level of income may be. ALSHA was formed in 2009.

Tennessee Stock Horse Association The Tennessee Stock Horse Association (TnSHA) strives to help our members ride better horses by creating better horsemen and strengthening the relationship between horsemen and their horses. The Tennessee Stock Horse Association was formed in 2012.

CoWN Stock Horse Association The CoWN Stock Horse Association promotes events throughout Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska, including;   shows, clinics and premiere events.  CoWN was formed in 2010. In November 2012, CoWN hosted the first Region 5 Championship Finals at the National Western Events Center   in Denver, Colorado. This premier event also included the ASHA World Championship Futurity and Derby. In December 2013, CoWN hosted the inaugural American Stock Horse Association National Championships.  The National Show was held in conjunction with the Region 5 Showdown, again including the limited aged events World Championship Futurity and Derby.

Region 6 Western States Stock Horse Western States Stock Horse (WSSH) was chartered as a nonprofit organization in 2011 and represents Region 6 of the American Stock Horse Association. Region 6 consists of nine states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. The mission of WSSH is to assist its members to improve horse and horsemanship skills through education and competition in a safe and enjoyable environment, while also preserving the traditions of the American Stock Horse.

Mustangs Among Us! By Becca Salamone

Tracie McVay and Maverick Photo by Anna Bishop

Ask Tracie McVay of Pine Mountain, Georgia about her favorite breed of horse and you’ll get a one-word answer: Mustangs! A long time rider and lover of registered and well-bred AQHA Quarter Horses, Tracie happened upon the Mustang when a friend encouraged the second generation trainer to compete in a Mustang Makeover. With that experience and their win, Tracie fell in love with the wild horse called the American Mustang. She admires their intelligence and tendency to Send news and photos of your activities and accomplishments to: Becca Salamone alabamahorsetalk@gmail.com

develop a deep bond with their owner or trainer. And the love of the Mustang runs in the family. Tracie’s daughter, Madeline, has a Mustang named Mighty Mouse whom she has trained and shown to several wins, including the recent Alabama Trail Horse Competition. Like mother, like daughter! Tracie trained and rode Maverick, a TIP horse, to win ASHA’s High Point Mustang award, a saddle sponsored by the Mustang Heritage Foundation. Tracie says that she started showing in ASHA because it’s one of a few places an unregistered Mustang can be shown. She encourages those interested to seriously consider adopting, training, and showing a Mustang in the ASHA.
