Last season, we began a movement with WE THE PEOPLE, our season theme reflecting American Stage’s commitment to embrace the opportunity to engage with one another through the sharing of compelling stories.

In 2018-19, we continue to build our WE THE PEOPLE community with powerful, bold live theatre. This season, we are coming together to experience LIFE. OUT LOUD. At American Stage, we are committed to telling stories that impact our hearts and minds, honor our diversity, embrace our differences, and rejoice in our shared experience of what it is to be human. Our season theme, LIFE. OUT LOUD. reflects our passion for Powerful Stories, Boldly Told and our commitment to promote connection and unity in our community through the sharing of a diversity of perspectives and experiences.

When I saw the world premiere of Jen Silverman's THE ROOMMATE, the fourth production in our mainstage season, at the Humana Festival of New Plays in Louisville, I joined the rest of the audience in being completely charmed and surprised by the unique and comical friendship that evolves between Sharon and Robyn. The story is a wickedly funny take on Life. Out Loud. that gives us something all too rare in the theatre: two characters who defy our assumptions and expectations about 'women of a certain age.'..."

Looking further into the year, we're excited to present an exciting new voice in the theatre with Jen Silverman's dark comedy, THE ROOMMATE, the second Pulitzer Prize-winner of our season LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT, and the fresh and unforgettable Tony Award-winning

musical, FUN HOME. Our 2018-19 season features characters laughing, crying, loving, rebelling, mourning and soaring... out loud. These are sit-up-and-take-notice stories that will dare you to lean forward and be transported.

Of course, our season wouldn’t be complete without our one-of-a-kind Tampa Bay tradition, American Stage in the Park. In 2019, we are thrilled to celebrate another production under the stars at Demens Landing with MAMMA MIA!, a high-energy romantic comedy set in a Greek Island paradise and featuring the eternally celebratory songs of ABBA. SERVICES & FACILITIES Physical Accessibility: The theatre features accessible parking, entrances, restrooms, and seating.

Displaying a valid disabled parking permit will allow you to park at City metered spaces for FREE, for as long as your event requires, including those posted with time limit signs (green signs). This does not apply to loading zones or otherwise restricted parking signage (red signs).

Large Print Program: Theatergoers may peruse large print programs for each Mainstage production.

THEATRE INFORMATION

Re-entry into the theatre during the performance is not permitted.

•

The use of photographic or recording equipment during performances is strictly prohibited.

Fire exits are located in the lobby and backstage left and right.

•

Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager at an appropriate interval in the play. Reservation and seat location will be guaranteed only until five minutes prior to performance.

•

Guests are not permitted to smoke in any area of the building. Please use the ashtrays in the front of the building to extinguish and dispose of cigarettes.

•

Outside food is not permitted in the auditorium.

•

During the run of a show, box office hours are Monday and Tuesday from 10AM until 6PM; Wednesday through Friday from 10 am until showtime; and Saturday and Sunday from two hours before the performance until intermission. During weeks with no scheduled performances, box office hours are Monday through Friday from 10 am to 6PM.

Please read posted parking signs to avoid being ticketed and/or towed by independent lot owners.

Jen is a New York-based writer. Born in the U.S., she was raised across the U.S., Europe and Asia. Her theatre work includes THE MOORS (Yale Repertory Theatre premiere, off-Broadway with The Playwrights Realm, Susan Smith Blackburn finalist); THE ROOMMATE (Actor’s Theatre of Louisville Humana world premiere, multiple regional productions including South Coast Rep, SF Playhouse and Williamstown Theatre Festival, upcoming at Steppenwolf); PHOEBE IN WINTER (Off-off Broadway with Clubbed Thumb); COLLECTIVE RAGE: A PLAY IN 5 BETTIES (Woolly Mammoth premiere); and ALL THE ROADS HOME, a play with songs (Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park premiere). Jen is a member of New Dramatists, a Core Writer at the Playwrights Center in Minneapolis, an affiliated artist with SPACE on Ryder Farm, and has developed work with the O’Neill, New York Theatre Workshop, Playpenn, Portland Center Stage, The Ground Floor Residency at Berkeley Rep, and the Royal Court in London among other places. Every once in a while, a person comes into our lives and brings a whole new perspective that we never considered. Maybe it's a co-worker, or a teacher. Or a roommate. They push us beyond our boundaries, and help us open up to new ideas.

If we are receptive, we are encouraged to think differently about the world.

It's a classic scenario, the unlikely duo overcoming their differences, but this story is more complex. The two women in our story are at a crossroads and they desperately need to make a change. Sharon is recovering from a divorce, and Robyn is escaping an uncertain lifestyle. Thrust together in the middle of the Iowan cornfields, they begin to overcome their distrust and connect over life's questions. They are from completely different backgrounds but they choose to talk, to listen, to learn and to accept each other on their own terms.

That is inspiring in these divisive times.

Women in their most evocative years are sometimes ignored. They are easily dismissed and yet they are the ones holding the world on their shoulders. We rarely embrace mature women pursuing their truth – especially if that means behaving badly. In this play, we get to look deeply at their desires and revel with them in their triumphs. They deliberately go out of their comfort zones in order to shake things up. It makes me wonder: Can we become “better” by allowing ourselves to be “bad”?

I am delighted to be directing Silverman's surprising comedy with such a wonderful creative community. It’s been a joy to explore these characters with such fine artists. I hope you enjoy their journey and are inspired to consider the women in your life as the forces of nature that they truly are.

AN INTERVIEW WITH PLAYWRIGHT, JEN SILVERMAN The following is an interview excerpt from American Theatre Magazine

BY DIEP TRAN What made you want to write a two-person, very introspective Thelma and Louiselike tale set in Iowa?

JEN SILVERMAN (JS): Well, practically speaking, I had been thinking for a while of how, when I go to the theatre, I rarely see any roles for women of that age range that are not supporting roles. When I do see older women onstage, or women in their 50s or 60s onstage, those women are generally just there; the play’s actually about younger people but those women are there to, you know, have a couple of jokes or have a couple of jokes made about them.

So I really wanted to write a play for badass women in their 50s. I sort of thought that, like, there is a kind of energy, a kind of concentration that happens when they are the two players on that stage and they have all that agency and all that power.

Also I find it to be such a difficult thing to write a two-hander. So that was a challenge I wanted to give myself and see what happens.

Did you like it?

JS: I enjoyed it! I had to be ruthless with myself because there is no out! No, “Okay, now that fifth character comes out.” I had to stay very specific to what these two people need and want. What are they giving each other? What are they not giving each other? What are the beats between them — or the beats that move this thing forward? And there can’t be any cheap tricks, there can’t be, like, somebody enters and then the energy changes.

I tend to feel much more comfortable in worlds that are slightly absurdist, where something crazy might happen, and with this play, I had to be really strict with myself and say, like, “You are in a kitchen in Iowa, you may not put a shark onstage!” It required a ruthlessness, but it was something that I found really exciting.

You’re in your 30s. Thematically, what was it about the theme of second beginnings and mid-life crisis that appealed to you?

JS: This older gentleman at Actors Theatre, a patron, quite enjoyed the show but he was like, “You’re a quarter of my age! What do you know about the mid-life crisis?” He was joking—but no, that’s a fair question. To me what it’s about is transformation. What it takes to get to a point in your life, whatever that point is, where you look at you life and you realize, I cannot do this anymore, I can’t live this life, I can’t wear these clothes and walk through my day in this way that I’ve been doing.

In a lot of my plays—the ones with many more characters—I’m really interested in this question of how do you transform and can we transform and what does it take to become the thing that we want to become and can we? Can we ever become something other than what we are? And how do people make us different even without our realizing it? This question has haunted me for a long time in general.

This play was a very specific lens on that question because it’s happening in the mid-50s for this woman. But the drive to be different, the drive to transform and the hunger that happens when she realizes that she can be living an entirely different life than the one she is living. That feels very relatable to me even if I’m not yet in my mid-50s.

Catherine returns to American Stage having previously designed THE 39 STEPS and 4000 MILES. Originally from Washington DC, she began her career as a costume intern at the Arena Stage in 1973 and received an MFA in design from the University of Texas.

Catherine and her husband relocated to the St. Petersburg area from New Jersey in 2017, where for 24 years she designed and managed the costumes for Princeton University’s theater and dance students. In addition to her theater work, Catherine is a docent at the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum.

KRISTIN CLIPPARD DIRECTOR

Kristin is the current Associate Artistic Director/Producer in Residence for Orlando Shakes. Selected directing credits include THE LUCKIEST PEOPLE by Meridith Friedman, GOD OF CARNAGE by Yasmina Reza, LOYALTY AND BETRAYAL (a community collaboration based on Julius Caesar), LANDLESS by Andrew Saito, and CHAMPAGNE GODS

Favorite classic play projects include TWELFTH NIGHT, THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, THE IMAGINARY INVALID, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, MEASURE FOR MEASURE, PERICLES, DR. FAUSTUS and SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER. Kristin has taught, administered, acted, assisted or directed with over three dozen theatre companies, nonprofit organizations, universities, and schools across the country. She enjoys developing new works with writers and is a playwright herself.

He then moved to Florida, where he has worked as a Scenic Designer, Properties Master, and Scenic Dresser for many popular Tampa Bay theatres and universities. On occasion, Jerid is also an Assistant Director or Art Director for theatrical productions, feature films, short films, and television commercials. Rachel has added a sound designer credit at Urbanite Theatre with the world premiere of Hannah Benitez’ new play DIKE. Guided by a love for experiential and environmental theatre, Rachel particularly enjoys the challenge of producing and managing theater in unconventional and unlikely spaces. Rachel is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association, The Stage Manager’s Association, and USITT and an advocate/ member of Intimacy Directors International.

Since 1986, Joseph has designed lighting for over 550 productions with such organizations as Asolo Repertory Theatre, Palm Beach Dramaworks, Maltz-Jupiter Theatre, Orlando Shakespeare Theatre, Palm Beach Opera, Opera Tampa, New Orleans Opera, Sarasota International Dance Festival, Ballet Eddy Toussaint USA and the Interlochen Dance Ensemble in Michigan. Joseph has received two Individual Artist Fellowships from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs and is a two-time recipient of the Theatre Tampa Bay award for outstanding lighting design. Further, he serves on the Advisory Board of Tampa Repertory Theatre. He is also a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829 New York and of IATSE Local 412 Sarasota.

MIRIAM ROCHFORD* STAGE MANAGER

Miriam is a NYC-based freelance stage manager. In NY, she works in the two very different worlds of Deaf theatre and opera, among other things. A Tampa Bay native, Miriam got her start at local companies like American Stage and Jobsite Theater.

She is thrilled and humbled to have been invited back brought on for this production of MAMMA MIA!. She sends love and broken fingers to her ASL Rocky NYC cast and crew, who are doing the Time Warp right now in NY. She also showers love and eternal gratitude upon her family and Mike, without whom she would be a trainwreck. Miriam dedicates this and every performance to her father.

Rose recently graduated with honors from Towson University and received a BFA in Acting. Credits include servant/exile in AS YOU LIKE IT (Baltimore Centerstage); Nadine in THE WILD PARTY (Iron Crow Theatre); Ophelia in HAMLET (Green Globe Theatre); and Puppeteer in MATERIALIZE (Maryland Ensemble Theatre). Towson University credits include METAMORPHOSIS, CABARET, FREAKSHOW, AFTER, VAJUNGLE, and STUPID FUCKING BIRD. Other theatre experience includes Producing Artistic Director for Wright Hard/Play Hard, A Festival of New Plays, and Assistant Director for PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (Towson University). She is thrilled to be joining the team of artists at American Stage. Rose looks forward to continuing to grow as an actor and artist through this apprenticeship.

KAYLIE HOROWITZ

Kaylie is from Lakeland, FL, and recently graduated from Auburn University with a BFA in Performance and a minor in Communication. She has also been involved in theatre through many different capacities from costume construction to aerial silks. Some of her credits from Auburn include the titular character ANTIGONE, NELL GWYN (Playhouse Creatures), and director for an original play, THE SPIDER. Outside of theatre she enjoys swimming, building cosplays, being at home with her cats, and taking trips to Disney World. Kaylie hopes to one day be working as an actor on stage as well as a voice actor from a home studio. She is excited be working at American Stage and to find a home within the arts community in St. Pete.

DYLAN CONNOR RENFROW

Dylan graduated from Auburn University in May 2018 with a BFA in Theatre Performance and Minor in Dance.

He appeared in ten shows during his time at Auburn. Some of his favorite roles include Haemon in ANTIGONE, Underling in THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, and Aerialist/Featured Player in

CHICAGO. Dylan has training in stage combat and aerial silks that he brings to the American Stage apprenticeship program. He looks forward to his time with the 2018-19 American Stage apprentice team to further his skills, meet new people, and be a part of the vibrant arts scene that St. Petersburg has to offer.

Season is a recent graduate from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

She has recently been a part of stage management teams for immersive theatre, devised theatre, and classical theatre productions. She has experience working in both the United States and Hong Kong. She is very excited to be a part of the apprentice team this year. She looks forward to working as stage and production management apprentice as well as in different departments. She believes hard work pays off. The professionals at American Stage will definitely help her to grow and learn to become a professional as well!

DONOVAN WHITNEY

Donovan was born and raised in Indianapolis, IN. He attended Wabash College, a small, all-male liberal arts institution in Crawfordsville, IN. It was there he took his first course in acting and later added theater to his degree. He graduated in 2016 with a BA in Political Science and Theater. Since graduating, Donovan has resided in Indianapolis, where he has been fortunate enough to hold down a few jobs and stay active in the Indy theater scene. American Stage credit inculdes: Oswaldo in BETWEEN RIVERSIDE AND CRAZY. The chance to collaborate with and learn from a group of dedicated artists while in St. Petersburg is one of the many things he is looking forward to with this apprentice team.
