WELCOME TO AMERICAN FOLKLORE THEATRE A Rose By Any Other Name… Beginning officially in 2015, American Folklore Theatre will debut a new company name – Northern Sky Theater. The change, which will coincide with AFT’s 25th anniversary in 2015, has been a part of our long-term strategic plan for the past seven years. From the neck up, the decision to change our name almost always makes sense to folks. Neck down, sometimes not so much. Overwhelmingly, our fans get the rationale while expressing some reservation, or admitting a little sadness. We get that. We knew we would be asking those closest to us to make an emotional sacrifice for the long-term strength of the company. But we also know that, to the uninitiated, the name “American Folklore Theatre” often communicates connotations about our focus that are no longer accurate. Over these past 25 years, AFT has evolved from a storytelling and concert-centric ensemble to a full-fledged theater organization that primarily focuses on the creation and presentation of original full-book musicals. After we announced our intentions this past spring, we received hundreds of suggestions for possible new names from our devoted fans throughout the country. The response was amazing. Most importantly, the process allowed people the opportunity to ponder and distill what they really love about us. The strongest themes running through all this feedback were those of family memories shared and the uniqueness of our theater “under the stars.” Ultimately, we’re confident that “Northern Sky” will prove itself a strong iconic name that will help to expand our audience, as well as our national team of creative collaborators. We’re excited about the possibilities that the name will allow us to take advantage of, to be challenged by, and, most importantly, to draw inspiration from. Look up and see what we mean. Thanks for coming and enjoy the show! Jeffrey Herbst Dave Maier Artistic Director Managing Director

American Folklore Theatre

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD “Over my dead body!” That was my first thought when the prospect of replacing the name “American Folklore Theatre” was brought up for discussion at our 2007 long-range planning meeting. I love American Folklore Theatre just the way it is! Why would we change the name that we hold near and dear? Answer: To ensure continuing, long-term success. This is the primary responsibility of our Board of Directors and management. To carry out this responsibility, we need to look at the big picture and think into the future. So, after hours, months and years of considering, debating, researching and seeking input, we all came to realize that changing the name makes good strategic sense for several major reasons. Broaden our appeal to new audience members. Yes, we have thousands of devoted fans who are attached to the name “American Folklore Theatre” and we’re extremely thankful for them. But, with an eye to the future, we know we must continually add newcomers. To expand our audience, we need to broaden our appeal. Attract talented writers, composers and performers. Original….musical comedies…delighting audiences of all ages… celebrating the culture and heritage of the United States… This is our time-tested formula for success and we’re sticking to it! But it takes tremendous effort from our artistic teams. To keep the pipeline of new shows continually filled, we need to make it clear that our theater is worthy of top, professional creative talent.

Evoke the magical experience of our one-of-a-kind theater. It took me, and many others, quite some time to come to grips with the idea of changing the name. Now that we’ve selected our new name, Northern Sky Theater, we’re all very excited about it! It really feels right. It evokes that magical feeling we all experience during our summer shows…under the stars, beneath the northern sky. Or, during our extended season, that delightful feel after a show as we head home in the autumnal Door County night. By the time our new name takes effect in 2015, I‘m confident you’ll join me in saying, “I love Northern Sky Theater!” Mary Seeberg AFT Board Chairperson FolkloreTheatre.com

MARVIN & LLOYD MAKE THEIR TELEVISION DEBUT! We are certain Marvin will be as thrilled as you are to hear the news that American Folklore Theatre is making plans to partner with Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) for a taping of a special production of Guys on Ice at our amphitheater in Peninsula State Park! AFT has been in discussions with WPT for some time now about how we might utilize their network to capture and highlight the experience of being at an AFT performance and share that experience across the state. After numerous negotiations to iron out the details and with the support of some very generous donors who have agreed to help us fund this extraordinary opportunity…it seems that the canopy of stars above our stage have aligned to make this all possible. The taping event will take place at the amphitheater during a special performance of Guys on Ice on Sunday, August 3rd with a second taping on Tuesday, August 5th. Find out how you can be in the audience for this once-in-a-lifetime event by calling our office at 920-854-6117 or by visiting www.folkloretheatre.com. We look forward to sharing this iconic musical and the AFT experience with the wide audience of Wisconsin Public Television viewers.

After graduating from the American Conservatory Theater Advanced Training Academy in San Francisco, Dave joined the A.C.T. acting company as an Equity actor, eventually assuming additional roles as conservatory trainer, literary coordinator, and stage director. He was also Production Manager of the New Plays Program for seven years, where he produced over thirty premiere productions, many of which he either designed or directed. He also served as Artistic Director for Encore Theatre Company in San Francisco for eight years, an experimental summer repertory theatre which produced over two-dozen critically acclaimed theater productions. He married his muse, Barb, in 1983, and they and their two beautiful sons have been blessed to call Door County home for the past twenty years. JOHN Very heroic, I assure you, but not necessary. A co-founder of AFT, he’s written or co-written 20 shows, including Guys & Does (with Lee Becker and Paul Libman) and Packer Fans from Outer Space and Belgians in Heaven (both with Lee Becker and James Kaplan). This spring Doc and Lee finished a first draft of the prequel to the latter show, tentatively titled Belgians Go Bowling, wherein we discover which came first, Mildred the Chicken or the egg. Doc is an award-winning associate professor at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in San Francisco, teaches at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and is associate editor of the APA journal PsycCRITIQUES. He’s won awards for his research and has published many dense articles in scientific journals with imposing titles. In his spare time he loves to ski and watch movies with his darling wife Jody. Doc dedicates his work on Packer Fans to his Dad, who at age 93 still watches the Pack and any other football team that his TV can pull in.

JIM MARONEK Scenic Designer Jim has designed scenery for at least ten AFT productions, he thinks, as well as their new permanent stage. He has designed maybe thirty sets for the Peninsula Players since he began his career there in 1950. He is now on their Board of Directors and helped to replace their theatre, which was nearly as old and creaky as he. His other local work includes designing The Christmas Schooner and An Enemy of the People at the Door County Auditorium. Otherwise, he operates his fine art gallery at Silver Poplar Studios in Ellison Bay, along with Russian cottage rentals, with his wife, Carole. His credits, including The Goodman Theatre in Chicago, number over 250 designs, some of which have been exhibited internationally. He is Professor Emeritus of The Theatre School of DePaul University.

A Note from the Authors of Strings Attached Book & Lyrics by Dave Hudson Music & Additional Lyrics by Colin Welford Tragedy is easy, comedy is hard. While working on this show, we’ve certainly found that expression to be true. It seemed like an easy task…take a story that’s already been told before and put our own spin on it. Plautus, the Roman playwright, wrote The Twin Brothers or The Twin Menaechmi around two thousand years ago. Shakespeare revisited the tale of lost twins in The Comedy of Errors. We started with a draft and it seemed very funny, but once we read it aloud there seemed to be something missing…and there was the rub. Strings Attached is both a comedy and a farce. When it comes to farce, think of it like a great big line of dominos stacked up next to each other. We’ve all tried that. Once you’ve tried the tipping dominos trick, you’ve learned two things: 1) If you make one mistake and nudge one domino at the wrong time, the whole thing goes tipping over before it is all even set up correctly; 2) If one thing is out of place, then one domino might go askew and the rest of the dominos will remain standing…and unfunny. That’s what writing Strings Attached was like. We wrote a draft and it seemed right, but then we saw that we had nudged things in the wrong direction. The events in the story were our dominos and if one was out of place, it all wouldn’t work. So, we started with a draft…and rewrote the whole thing. Then, we rewrote it again. Next, we had a workshop in Milwaukee this past winter. We read it aloud…and the dominos fell too soon, or too late, or not at all. We rewrote it again. And again. Keep in mind that none of the big things changed all that much. Many of the songs remained, and the key emotional points continued to be a constant. It was the connective elements that needed work...again. So, the draft you see on stage this summer is arguably the fifth full draft of the play, the fifth full rewrite. Comedy is indeed hard…but we certainly hope that you find it funny.

A Note from the Authors of Packer Fans from Outer Space Book & Lyrics by Frederick Heide & Lee Becker Music by Frederick Heide Additional Music by James Kaplan Two fascinating historical facts inspired Packer Fans from Outer Space. In the spring of 1952, reports of strange objects over local skies appeared in The Door County Advocate. William Beckstrom, superintendent of Peninsula State Park, actually called the Advocate to describe one of these “flying saucers,” estimated to be almost 800 feet long. Among many eyewitnesses were Sturgeon Bay residents Carol and Jim Lorenzen, who soon founded one of the first UFO research organizations in the U.S. This was back in the days when people took such sightings very seriously, and some Door County residents we interviewed can still recall these puzzling events. Not long after – on November 8, 1953 – the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears played a historic, though little-remembered, game. This battle captured our attention thanks to an outcome that has never been repeated in the rivalry. We set our show on the weekend of that game, and everything you hear about it tonight is true. Packer Fans from Outer Space builds on these two remarkable incidents to create a hilarious show that concerns very down-to-earth themes. Peggy, a smart idealistic farm girl, has big dreams that clash with her mother Marge’s traditional hopes. Marge, a Bears fan, becomes increasingly concerned for the mental stability of her Packers-loving husband (named Harvey in a loving nod to the classic Jimmy Stewart film of 1950). Romance with a mysterious stranger blooms under the stars. And so on. Although the title may not suggest it, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reviewer Mike Fischer describes Packer Fans as “a poignant coming-ofage tale wrapped around a tender love story” and “a frequently touching show with a great message.” A message he thinks could even help Wisconsin’s charged political climate, as he encourages the Governor and the State Legislature to make a goodwill outing to the show. Whether or not that happens, we hope you’ll pay a visit to the Kiester family’s Juddville apple orchard for a laugh-filled football fable that’s just a little bit out of this world.

A Note from the Authors of Guys on Ice Book & Lyrics by Fred Alley Music by James Kaplan Conceived & Researched by

Fred Alley & Frederick Heide Guys on Ice has played to sold-out houses throughout Wisconsin – from Eagle River to Viroqua, from Wausau to Milwaukee. Recently it has also been produced nationwide from Oregon to Massachusetts with Iowa and Minnesota in between! You’ve seen them. Little wooden shanties sitting on lake ice. Puffs of smoke rising from chimney pipes. On a quiet day, maybe the static of a tinny radio filters through plywood walls, across the frozen tundra, back to shore. In a cold world, on a cold day, on a frozen lake, these little signs of life are all most people know of a secret culture that thrives right here amongst us. Well, wonder no more. Once again, AFT sets its sights close to home as we bring you our somewhat twisted take on the secret world of ice fisherman. Guys On Ice spends a day in the life of Marvin and Lloyd, fishing buddies and home grown philosophers. With musical numbers like The Wishing Hole, Ode to a Snowmobile Suit, Fish Is the Miracle Food and The One That Got Away, Guys on Ice works not only as a serious anthropological study but as a musical comedy as well.

HOLLY FELDMAN Director of Development & Public Relations Though Holly has been around AFT for more than 12 years now in various behind-the-scenes roles, she was pleased to recently step into AFT’s newest position as Director of Development and Public Relations. She considers it an honor to have the opportunity to thank AFT’s generous donors personally for building, shaping, and sustaining this special place that holds her favorite childhood memories. Holly grew up camping in Peninsula State Park and has since added her own three children to the newest generation of AFT Fans. In addition to her behind-the-scene contributions, Holly has been seen singing on stage with Doc Heide, Jimmy Kaplan, Eric Lewis and Karen Mal. Last year one fan accused Holly of having a clone when, within just a few short hours, she witnessed Holly singing on stage at Songs of Doc Heide, then in the AFT office as the Marketing Director the next morning, and then later that evening selling popcorn at the amphitheater. While she hasn’t perfected cloning, if you listen carefully, you will hear Holly singing three-part harmony with herself in Packer Fans from Outer Space.

CAROL HEIL Box Office Staff Carol recalls her first trip to Door County in 1989. Drawn to the natural beauty and outdoor and cultural opportunities, she dreamt of living here one day. In 2010, Carol and her husband, Richard, made that dream a reality, breaking ground for their “right-sized” home in Ellison Bay. Carol works as an AFT box office representative by day, volunteer by night. When stage lights go dark and Door County enters the quiet season, Carol enjoys weaving, hiking, skiing, and traveling to sons (and soon-to-be grandson!) in Virginia and Oregon. “We love returning to Door County, though. It’s an amazing place to call home.”

EILEEN MAYBORNE Box Office Staff Eileen is a part Illinois and part Indiana native that fell in love with Door County on numerous visits as a child. She brought her now husband of 29 years, Dennis, up for a visit. He fell in love with the county and she fell in love with him. They have both been volunteering at AFT for the past 6 years and Eileen has been in the box office for the past 3 years. These still avid Chicago Bear fans reside in Fish Creek with their family, Oliver the Westy and Gabby the barn cat. Eileen says, “The winters in DC are okay, except they’re too long between performances.”

The Bachelors returns to AFT this fall and makes it debut at the Door Community Auditorium. This follow-up to Guys on Ice celebrates the realm of bachelorhood through the lens of Stew and John, hapless bumblers in search of love in Madison, Wisconsin. Two thirty-something (or is that forty-something?) bachelors inhabit a cave-like apartment basking in a blissful state of extended adolescence. One night they innocently order out for pizza, never expecting the delivery girl is the reincarnation of a woman they both wronged in a previous lifetime. Welcome to The Bachelors.

A Note from the Author of The Bachelors Book & Lyrics by Fred Alley Music by James Kaplan Story by Fred Alley & James Kaplan In 1990, I left my New Jersey homeland, motivated by the offer of a rent-controlled studio apartment in Berkeley, California. Soon after, I met up with Fred Alley at Uncle Ralph’s, a counter-culture consumer electronics store that employed us both. We became friends, and by the summer of 1992, we had collaborated on our first show, Fishing for the Moon. In the winter of 1993, Fred came to Berkeley to spend some time working on our next show, Northern Lights. Looking to keep housing costs to a minimum, Fred stayed at my place. I had a queensize futon and another bed that folded up into the closet. With these two beds in their sleeping positions, there wasn’t room for much more than a desk and a piano. Several years later, and with the assistance of Doc Heide, we wrote a show called Guys on Ice, which proved to be very popular. Sorting through ideas for a follow up, and inspired by our experiences in Berkeley, we decided to explore the world of two more grown men confined in a small space. This time we thought things might be more interesting if we introduced a woman into their world. We spent the better part of a year talking about all the strange and funny things that go on when men live together. We talked about doing the dishes, how to make coffee when there are no more filters and the mysterious science experiments you would find in the refrigerator. (I would like to be clear that I have never used a sock – dirty or clean – as a coffee filter.) We talked about annoying calls from telemarketers, our efforts to eat three meals a day for less than five dollars and the way things changed when one of us had a girlfriend. When the time came to actually write the show, we did it in about 60 days. Berkeley 1993 became Madison 2001, with a brief stop in Victorian England. The songs in The Bachelors cover a broad range of styles, and Fred got a big kick out of watching the show over and over. We hope you do too. It is wonderful that the show is coming back to Door County, this time in the lovely Door Community Auditorium. – James Kaplan FolkloreTheatre.com

Volunteers of American Folklore Theatre Do you love theatre? Do you love the outdoors? Do you enjoy sharing that experience with others? If your answers are “YES”, then we have the perfect opportunity for you! AFT offers many different ways to get involved with the theatre experience – in addition to ushering, selling concessions, guiding parking and assisting our disabled guests, there are opportunities to help with poster and rack card distribution, assisting with bulk mailings, preparing the amphitheater in Peninsula State Park so it is ready for the summer season, and assisting with the many special events that AFT has planned for this summer. Volunteers can choose what job they would like to do and their hours – no matter what you enjoy doing and when you enjoy doing it, there is a task for everyone. If this sounds interesting, we’d love to hear from you. No experience is necessary – just a willingness to help and a desire to be part of something original in Door County. Please call Ann Birnschein, AFT’s Volunteer Coordinator, at the AFT Office, (920) 854-6117 ext. 104 or e-mail the office at volunteer@folkloretheatre.com. SUMMER RAIN POLICY The show will go on if at all possible. AFT will not cancel a show until show time, or even a bit after if the weather appears to be passing. If cancelled, and the show is less than half over, you will have the option of a mail-in refund coupon or receiving a rain check ticket, which is good for any future AFT performance without expiration. If a show is more than half over when interrupted, patrons will be issued rain check tickets only. If you choose not to attend, and the show goes on as scheduled, there are no refunds.
