Klide and Sheba were surrendered to a shelter in NYC, and thankfully, these wonderful seniors were saved

by Second Chance Rescue. Klide is an american stafford/cane corso mix and he is approximately 7 years young.

Sheba, at 8-years-old, is an American stafford/boxer mix. These two are bonded in every sense of the word. They are joined at the hip and eat, play and sleep together, every second of every day. They both can be very energetic and they are exceptionally outgoing.

They are playful and will do just about anything for attention. Both dogs can also be very laid-back, content to just curl up and sleep. Because they are an

older couple, they are very easy to care for. Both Klide and Sheba have some separation anxiety. I think that they would be best in a home where there is people around often. I leave them with no worries since I distract them by filling their Kong with treats, food and peanut butter. They both have good leash manners and these two bonded seniors are extremely loyal and have so much love to offer a forever family.

Please help us insure they find a home together. Klide and Sheba currently reside in Rhode Island, but we absolutely encourage out of state adoptions and will assist you with transport.

Meet Waldo! He's a 6-year-old, Pit Bull Terrier mix that has spent the last four and a half years of his life living in a kennel – first in a municipal shelter, and since, in a private boarding facility. This quiet, mellow fellow is low-key, rarely rambunctious and, although strong, an easy walking companion. He is quite smart, highly food motivated and eager to please.

He knows all of his basic commands and even a few tricks too!

When Waldo is lucky enough to get out of his kennel, he really enjoys playing tug with his braided rope or choosing a special toy to chew, though honestly, he seems most content sitting next to

you, getting butt scratches and soaking up all of your undivided attention.

Though not much of an outdoorsman, Waldo does relish car rides and makes a great co-pilot. He is also neutered, up-to-date with vaccinations, on heart worm prevention, housebroken to a fault and crate trained. He is a model patient at the vet, well-behaved while being groomed and tolerant of being handled.

Waldo is located on Long Island, New York, ready and waiting for his future adoptive family to notice him. We are seeking an experienced guardian, without other pets, who is financially secure and owns their home, preferably

in the Northeastern USA. Though Waldo is always kind to children, we request kids of the household be over age 12, due to his mouthiness and play style. DOCK DIVING

Dock diving is a popular sport for the canine athlete in which dogs run and leap off a 40-foot dock into a pool of water after a lure thrown by their handler. The dog that jumps the farthest is the winner. Any breed of dog can participate in this sport, but obviously a love of the water is a must.

There are four different tournament events; Big Air, Extreme Vertical, Speed Retrieve and Iron Dog. There are age classifications as well. Dock diving events are held regionally, nationally, and internationally.

This incredibly popular sport called Disc Dogs only requires a Frisbee, a four-legged buddy and a level play area. Dogs of all kinds love to perform in this competition and some of the world champions have been mixed breeds and shelter rescue dogs. This is a great sport because it gives the dog

a job to do, keeps them entertained and is a terrific way to bond and work as a team with your dog.

In this sport the dogs and their handler compete in disc-throwing events such as distance catching and freestyle catching.

Flyball is a fantastic sport for dogs that love to run and are obsessed with balls. This fast and exciting competition is a relay race between four high-spirited dogs and the course consists of hurdles to jump and a spring-loaded box that shoots out a tennis ball when the dog steps on it.

After catching the ball the dog runs back over the hurdles and crosses the starting line, allowing the next dog

to take off. The team with the fastest time wins the race.

Flyball is open to all canine breeds, ages and sizes, and many dog owners become involved for the fun and camaraderie of the sport.

DOG HERDING

A wide variety of breeds have the “instinct” to herd and this sport lets the dogs act on their instincts while having a great time! The American Herding Breed Association says, “The AHBA Herding Trial Program allows dogs to demonstrate herding ability in herding trials at started, intermediate and advanced levels on a standard course and on farm/ranch courses which vary in detail but include specified requirements.”

AHBA also states, “The goals of the AHBA are to promote an appreciation of the skills and value of the herding dog and to help provide information about herding breeds, training, behaviors, and herding in general."

The herding trials involve a group of animals (usually sheep), handlers, the dog and judges. Most events are open to all dog breeds or mixed breeds, but some titles are limited to specific herding breeds.

LURE COURSING

Lure coursing is a fast-paced sport where the dog chases an artificial lure zigzagging across a field and they compete for the best time. The artificial lure is meant to simulate a live animal (jackrabbit or hare) in an open field and a typical lure course can be up to 1000 yards with obstacles, turns and jumps throughout the course. The course has to have a certain number of turns in order to

simulate the unpredictability of live prey changing direction if it were a real chase.

ASFA states, “The American Sighthound Field Association is an organization of sighthound fanciers dedicated to the common goal of preserving and further developing the natural beauty, grace, speed and coursing skill of the sighthound. We

will endeavor to promote lure field trials for sighthounds." You can visit the website for a list of eligible dog breeds to participate in this sport.

RALLY OBEDIENCE

Rally obedience is a sport for dogs based on obedience. The AKC explains, “Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler complete a course that has been designed by the rally judge.

The judge tells the handler to begin, and the dog and handler proceed at their own pace through a course of designated stations (10 - 20, depending on the level). Each of these stations

has a sign providing instructions regarding the next skill that is to be performed. Scoring is not as rigorous as traditional obedience."

AKC states, “Communication between handler and dog is encouraged and perfect heel position is not required, but there should be a sense of teamwork between the dog and handler. The main

objective of rally is to produce dogs that have been trained to behave in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs, in a manner that will reflect positively on the sport of rally at all times and under all conditions."

Tracking trials are events where dogs use their nose to follow a scent trail. The AKC has a lot of great info on this sport and their website says, “AKC tracking events are the competition form of canine search and rescue. These Tracking events provide training for dogs and their handlers to meet some human needs for tracking and finding lost humans or other animals, as well as,

demonstrating the extremely high level of scent capability that dogs possess.

The AKC's Tracking Tests allow dogs to demonstrate their natural ability to recognize and follow human scent.

This vigorous outdoor activity is great for canine athletes. Unlike Agility and Obedience events that require a dog to qualify three times, a dog only needs to complete one track successfully to earn each title."

CANINE FREESTYLE

Canine freestyle is a modern dog sport that is dancing with dogs to music. It’s a fun sport that involves a mixture of choreographed dance, tricks, and obedience training. The World Canine Freestyle Organization says, “Canine Freestyle is a choreographed musical program performed by handlers and their dogs. The object is to display the dog and handler in a creative, innovative and original dance, using music and intricate movements to showcase teamwork,

artistry, costuming, athleticism and style in interpreting the theme of the music."

There are organizations in the United States that regulate competitive canine freestyle such as The World Canine Freestyle Organization, the Musical Dog Sport Association and the Canine Freestyle Federation. Dog Carting is a sport for dogs in which a dog pulls a cart filled with supplies or barbell weights and performs obedience routines and maneuvering exercises on a course. Usually this activity is preferred by large breed dogs who love to exercise.

In 2011, my sons, Ryan (24-years-old) and Kyle (20-years-old) and I started selling Acadia Antlers at a roadside stand outside the Acadia National Park in Maine where we were able to do business the oldfashioned way – by talking with our customers about their dogs and catering

our customers money. While other companies buy lower grade antler and have reduced the sizes of their antlers to compete, we simply have not. Our customers know we have their pets best interests as our priority, and trust that we will treat their dogs as we treat our own. Their dogs are like family to us, and we work hard to make sure they only get the best.

We know that other companies attract new customers with sales gimmicks and games. At Acadia Antlers, we realize that loyalty is a two way street. We

value our customers’ loyalty, and also believe that we must earn that trust.

My sons and I travel across the country to personally meet as many of our customers as we can. Our Facebook fan base has grown to over 37,000 people who share their dog's lives with us. We share the happy and the sad, we learn from each other, and we are inspired by their accomplishments.

We all share the common bond of loving our pets, and we all share a common goal of wanting our pets to be happy, and live healthier, longer lives.

SURVIVAL TIPS SURVIVAL TIP #1 - HAVE A FOOD SUPPLY FOR 7 DAYS In the event of an emergency or natural disaster involving hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, power outages, or winter storms you might not able to leave your house. In addition, emergency services might not be able to get to you or your neighborhood for days, so you should keep at least 7 days worth of nonperishable food and water on hand. If you are able to budget more money for emergency supplies, then having 14 days worth of food and water would help your family be better prepared. You should have foods with a long shelf life and will not spoil, can be easily stored, that do not require cooking, and foods that your family and your pets actually like and will eat.

SURVIVAL TIP #2 - HAVE A WATER SUPPLY FOR 7 DAYS You should have one gallon of water per day for each family member including pets. Following a natural disaster, your regular water source from the sink, tub or hose could be cut off and not be available or compromised. Also, you cannot safely drink water from a lake or stream or pool due to contamination unless you have a good quality water purifier. So make sure you have enough water stored for your entire family for drinking and sanitation. You should keep bottled water in its original container, unopened, and store in a cool place till needed.

SURVIVAL TIP #3 - PREPARING FOOD: ALTERNATIVE COOKING SOURCES WITHOUT ELECTRICITY During a natural disaster your home could lose electricity, gas or water for an extended period of time and you will want an alternative cooking source and supplies available to prepare food for your family and your pets if needed.

Cooking off the grid or cooking without electricity and preparing food can be a challenge without your oven, stove or microwave.

Therefore, it’s a good idea to plan ahead and be ready with an alternative source of cooking when an emergency comes up.

Barbecue Grills - charcoal or propane gas. Make sure to always keep a full tank of propane, and preferably have an extra tank as well (filled). If you use charcoal for your grill then make sure to buy extra bags when they are on sale.

Coleman Camp Stove - Contain two burners and run on propane bottles and you can cook, boil or grill.

Rocket Stoves - offer the flexibility to cook with wood, biomass fuel or charcoal, and you can cook with flat or rounded bottom pans on the stove top.

Dutch Ovens - Cast iron Dutch Ovens are great for cooking directly over campfires and you can place them on grills as well.

Smokers - Smokers are available using charcoal or propane gas and give your food an authentic smokehouse flavor.

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS BEHIND. Remember, if it isn't safe for you, it isn't safe for your pets. They may become trapped or escape and be exposed to numerous life-threatening hazards. Note that not all Red Cross disaster shelters accept pets, so it is imperative that you have determined where you will bring your pets ahead of time.

• Contact your veterinarian for a list of preferred boarding kennels and facilities.

• Ask your local animal shelter if they provide emergency shelter or foster care for pets.

• Identify hotels or motels outside of your immediate area that accept pets.

• Ask friends and relatives outside your immediate area if they would be willing to take in your pet.

EMERGENCY SUPPLIES AND TRAVELING KITS Keep an Evac-Pack and supplies handy for your pets. Make sure that everyone in the family knows where it is. This kit should be clearly labeled and easy to carry. Items to consider keeping in or near your pack include: Pet first-aid kit and guide book (ask your vet what to include or buy one online)

• 3-7 days' worth of canned (pop-top) or dry food (be sure to rotate every two months)

• Disposable litter trays (aluminum roasting pans are perfect)

• Litter or paper toweling

• Liquid dish soap and disinfectant

• Disposable garbage bags for clean-up

• Pet feeding dishes

• Extra collar or harness as well as an extra leash

• Photocopies of medical records and a waterproof cage liner.

SURVIVAL TIPS SURVIVAL TIP #9 - HAVE AN EMERGENCY PLAN IN PLACE Make sure each person in your family knows what to do in a disaster or if there is an emergency. For example, if there was a fire in your house make sure family members know the fastest escape routes out of the home and a way to exit each room. If there was an earthquake, identify where the safest room, doorway, or furniture to take cover under is located in your house. If there is a tornado do you have a safe spot to protect you that will fit all family members and pets? If there was flooding in your neighborhood, do you know where to turn off water, gas, electric and have an escape route to higher ground? If the electricity went out during a bitter winter storm do you have adequate clothing and blankets to keep your family and pets warm? Do you have an alternate indoor heat source?

SURVIVAL TIP #10 - HAVE 3 WAYS TO GET WARNINGS Have alternative ways to receive emergency warnings in your area. Make sure each person in your family has access to a cell phone and has the ability to get text alerts on their phone.

Have internet service and be able to receive emails on your computer. In addition, have a batterypowered AM/FM radio with extra batteries to stay tuned to severe weather or disasters in your area.

SURVIVAL TIP #11 - HAVE A PLACE TO MEET AFTER A DISASTER Make sure all family members know the designated place to meet after a disaster in case you need to evacuate or are separated from each other and it’s not safe to return to your home.

SURVIVAL TIP #12 - HAVE AN EMERGENCY CONTACT PERSON (FRIEND OR RELATIVE) Ask a friend or relative to be your family’s designated emergency contact person for family members in case you get separated or are in different locations during a disaster. Make sure all family members know the contact’s phone number so everyone can stay in touch with each other.

SURVIVAL TIP #13 - HAVE AN EMERGENCY CONTACT CARD Make sure to have an emergency contact card with all the emergency phone numbers you would need and that each family member has a card to carry with them. The card could include your children’s schools, your work (job) phone numbers, relatives numbers, hospitals, close friends, utility companies, and any other pertinent phone numbers to have handy.

SURVIVAL TIPS SURVIVAL TIP #14 - MAKE SURE YOUR INSURANCE IS UP-TO-DATE Make sure your home, auto, boat, or business insurance policy is up-to-date. You should regularly take photos of furniture and all personal items in your house and garage for your records should anything happen to your possessions.

Keep photos in a safe place or fire-safe box for future reference if needed. Also, make sure you have adequate insurance coverage to cover structural damage to your house or property and if there were possible flooding in basements, etc.

SURVIVAL TIP #15 - MAKE A LIST OF ITEMS NEEDED IF EVACUATING Make a list of important items you would grab if you had time to evacuate. This list could include family photo albums, family heirlooms, important documents, cash and credit cards in house and computer equipment. Keep this list readily available with your disaster supplies kit.

SURVIVAL TIP #16 KNOW HOW TO TURN OFF MAIN UTILITIES Make sure all family members know where the main switch and valve shut-offs are located for the electricity, water and gas lines and how to turn them off in an emergency.

Keep the necessary tools needed near the gas and water shut-off valves.

SURVIVAL TIP #17 - UNPLUG ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT In the event of an emergency or evacuation you should unplug all your electrical equipment such as televisions, small appliances, stereos, radios, lamps and fans.

You can leave refrigerators and freezers plugged in unless there could be a risk of flooding in your area.

SURVIVAL TIP #18 TEACH FAMILY MEMBERS HOW TO USE THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER Make sure to show each family member how to use a fire extinguisher and where it’s kept.

You should have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen as well as your garage, and maybe the laundry room.

SURVIVAL TIP #19 - TEACH SMALL CHILDREN HOW TO DIAL 9-1-1 Make sure if you have children that they know how to dial 9-1-1 in an emergency and review your emergency action plan with all family members. You should have your local emergency numbers posted by the phone as well.

SURVIVAL TIPS SURVIVAL TIP #20 - INSTALL SMOKE & CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR Install smoke detectors and a carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home, especially near the bedrooms your family sleeps in. Make sure to test them every month using the alarm button, and if the battery is low, replace the battery immediately. You should replace the batteries at least once every year to be on the safe side.

SURVIVAL TIP #21 - ONE FAMILY MEMBER TRAINED IN FIRST AID & CPR It’s a good idea to have at least one family member trained in basic first aid just in case if your loved ones are hurt and emergency medical personnel are delayed. Also, make sure family members know CPR for people and your pets.

The Red Cross often has classes available throughout the year.

SURVIVAL TIP #22 - IF YOU HAVE A CAR KEEP A FULL TANK OF GAS If you have a car and are alerted about a crisis in your area then make sure to have a full tank of gas if an evacuation is necessary. You should always remember to keep your car filled with a half tank of gas in it at all times just in case you might have to evacuate unexpectedly.

During emergencies or disasters or power outages the gas stations may be closed and unable to pump gas.

SURVIVAL TIP #23CHECK YOUR EMERGENCY SUPPLIES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR Make sure to check your emergency supplies throughout the year to replace your food, your pet’s food, water, batteries or anything that has an expiration date on the label.

SURVIVAL TIP #24 - PRACTICE EVACUATION DRILLS ONCE A YEAR Conduct fire drills and make sure to practice evacuating your home at least once a year. What you would do and where you would go in the event of a mandatory evacuation, earthquakes, wildfires, or other disasters. You can look for alternate routes to travel on your map if main roads are closed or impassable. Know where the pet-friendly motels are on your evacuation route just in case it becomes necessary to use them.
