New Diana high school baseball field dedicated to fallen hero, Donny Tidwell By: Reagan Roy, Trent Bennett That same year, Tidwell left baseball to join the United States Army and fight in the Vietnam War. According to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, Tidwell earned the rank of Corporal. On April 12, 1968, Tidwell was killed in action (KIA) in South Vietnam in the Battle of Good Friday. As part of the the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Tidwell is honored on Panel 49E, Line 37. A memorial was erected outside the NDHS field and a U.S. flag will fly 24/7 to honor Tidwell's life and legacy. “My first championship team was the 1966 Ogden Dodgers," Lasorda says. "I’ll always look at that roster and think of Donny Tidwell. Every player who starts out in pro ball has a dream of playing in the Majors. While several of his teammates eventually played in the Majors, Donny decided there was something

The

New Diana Robotics teams have had a great year. In December the teams competed in one of the largest competitions in Texas and Team 9950 got close to making it to state. They were a part of the final two alliances and after fighting hard they lost their final match by a few points. In February (23-18), New Diana hosted their first Vex robotics competition. There were 18 teams that came to the competition and with the help of awesome volunteers, our first competition was a success. Next year the competition will be a bigger as Vex has seen an increase in East Texas schools interested in adding the program to their curriculum. On February 24, 2018 we had a team qualify for State and compete for a chance at Worlds. Hunter Ludgate, Ethan Nicholson, Mitchell Chapman, Tommy Moseley, and David Whatley placed top 7 after qualifying rounds at State.

bigger than baseball. His decision to enter the Army took courage as he set aside his dream of playing baseball to serve his country. The image of Donny eagerly taking the ball and pitching in a Dodger uniform during that summer of 1966 is something I’ve carried with me for more than 50 years. DIANA, Texas (KETK) - An East Texas high school has dedicated their baseball field to a fallen hero 50 years after his untimely death. On Tuesday evening, the New Diana Independent School District held a ceremony to dedicate the Donny G. Tidwell Memorial Baseball Field in honor of former student-athlete Donny Tidwell. Tidwell was born on April 2, 1947, in Diana. As he grew up, he excelled in athletics; mainly basketball, baseball and football, even earning him a spot on the All-State football team as a quarterback in 1964. In 1966, the Los Angeles Dodgers sent scouts to Diana to witness Tidwell throw his 100-MPH fastball. He then signed a contract with LA's farm system team. He played a year of professional baseball in the Rookie League under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Tommy Lasorda.

We are now on the heels of spring break and our push towards the state assessment season and ultimately graduation has begun. Graduation for our high school seniors will be held Thursday, May 24th at LeTourneau's University Belcher Center. The construction timeline for the Phase II expansion of the Robert F. Hunt Elementary School remains in check with a construction beginning target date of this summer. We are hoping to begin the 2019-20 school year with all of our Pre K through fifth grade students under one roof. The vacated school will continue to be used for secondary instructional and administrative purpose. Even though the summer break looms, there remains much to be accomplished before concluding this school year. Spring sports such as track and field; softball, baseball; and golf are all showing success and look for deep playoff runs and/or state appearances for many of our students. Our high school band recently received a Sweepstakes Award for perfect scores in marching, concert contest and sight reading. UIL academics has several of our students at the time of this writing heading to their regional tournament in Tyler while our Ag department recently sent students to Lubbock for the State horse judging competition.

Pole Vaulting is a Uniquely Technical and Dangerous Sport By Jenifer

Jack Miller, New Diana Senior, intensely stares down the runway and up at the bar. His eyes are focused, his eyebrows bounce, his head jerks to the left. He could be cracking his neck; it's more likely the senior is thinking, "Holy Mackerel, that's high." He is about to attempt a 4.9 meter pole vault leap—that's more than 15 feet 9 inches. Miller catapults off the pole, kicks toward the rafters, gymnastically swings his hips and body over the bar, and falls back to Earth. His arms are outstretched in celebration before he even hits the mat.

Jack has been jumping for NDHS for four years. His freshman year he was 5’2”, weighed in at 90 pounds and jumping at 11 feet. Miller was confronted with the challenge of his height and weight in comparison to his competitors over the years. The gain in self-confidence and athletic maturity throughout the years brought about a steady holistic growth to Miller. He now stands 5'11" and weighing in at 140 pounds. We are now weeks away from the district meet where Jack has his eyes set on clearing 16 feet, which will secure him a trip to Area. When asked what is focus is Jack said, "I know I have to stay focused on each milestone in my journey to the State meet where I will attempt to clear 17 feet." " I am humbled for the experiences that I have encountered and have had to work very hard to obtain them. I give God all my glory as I kneel before Him at the start of each jump."

A combination of gymnastics, weightlifting, sprinting, and jumping, pole vaulting is one of the most technically demanding events in athletics. Pole vaulters must be fast, powerful, strong, agile, and brave to succeed in this challenging and sometimes dangerous sport. Pole vaulting is a common competition in today's Olympic Games. Using a pole made of flexible materials, the vaulter uses his own weight to launch over a heightened bar. If the vaulter upends the bar, then he is disqualified, leaving only the vaulters who have cleared the bar to be judged.

Fiberglass poles shatter with the echo of a gunshot. Jumpers miss the landing pads. They jam themselves in the box, tear muscles, or slip backward and hit their heads. Young jumpers pull the pole close to their bodies in midair out of fear, negating all forward energy.

Robert F. Hunt Elementary celebrates Dr. Seuss’ birthday Robert F Hunt Elementary - West Campus

Cat in the Hat, Sara Yount; Thing One, Sadie Star; and Thing Two, Noel Star

Theodor Seuss Geisel, or “Dr. Seuss,” is one of the most wellknown children’s authors in history, having sold more than 600 million copies of his work at the time of his death in 1991 at the age of 87. Dr. Seuss was born March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Massachusetts, and his birthday is celebrated every year at schools across the United States.

On Thursday, March 8, 2018, Robert F. Hunt Elementary West hosted the annual Dr. Seuss Night. Our building was full of activity with over 250 students and their families in attendance. Carnival games, the reading of Dr. Suess books by our inspirational teachers, a Dr. Suess short film in the library, various photo ops. along with the famous Green Eggs and Ham and pancakes served

in our cafeteria were among our activities. Cat in the Hat along with Thing 1 and Thing 2 also stopped by for a visit. Excitement and great anticipation was visible in every student walking through our doors. We would like to thank Ms. Costlow (Spring Market), Ms. Rushing (Spring Market), Mr. Wright (board member), Mr. Key, Mr. Ferrer, Mr. Guerrero,

Sara Yount, Sadie Star, Noel Star and our New Diana High School PALS for volunteering to help us. We could not have had as successful a night without their help. We would also like to thank all of the students and their families for attending. You made Dr. Suess Night terrific.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Memory Projects by High School Advanced Art Students

The Advanced Art students at New Diana High School are partnering with The Memory Project to create portraits for children who were hit by the hurricane in Puerto Rico. This organization travels all over the world to deliver hand drawn portraits to children who live in refugee camps or orphanages. The students are sending 14 portraits and in return will receive a video of the children opening their portraits; to see the smile on their faces is a great reward. This is an amazing project and the students feel a sense of pride in the work that they were able to create for these children.

For the concert portion, bands perform three prepared pieces for three judges and receive a rating of 1-5, 5 being the worst and 1 being the best. The second portion is sight reading; bands get seven minutes to silently rehearse, directors may only talk about the music and each band has one chance to perform it, again for three judges. This year the band got first division ratings from each of the six judges, making the New Diana band a sweepstakes band. We are super proud of the work these student have put forth this year. A good Cheerleader is not measured by the height of her jumps but by the span of her Spirit Eagle Spirit is alive in New Diana

By Courtney Verzosa, High School Cheer Coach

What an awesome year it has been to be a New Diana Eagle! Our cheerleading season began last March with tryouts. These girls go year round and never stop cheering on the Eagles. The squad goes from tryouts, to camp, to summer practices, to football, to basketball, to competition, then back to tryouts. When a cheerleader tries out they commit to a full year of supporting each and every sport, academic team, and each other. The fall season was one to go down in the books. Our football team did an outstanding job! We were very excited not only for the games but the crowd involvement this year. Our kids feed off the excitement for the crowd and the love from our town. We are hoping Diana will come out and support next season and be involved just as much as they were this season! It is always a great year to be a New Diana Cheerleader. The girls worked very hard and we are very proud for all they have done this year. As stated in our constitution, more will be expected of you and your behavior will be held at a higher standard than that of the average student. When you make the cheer squad you are on the squad from March to March. These girls go year round and support the Eagles through all sports, even if it is behind the scenes. For the girls to be able to maintain a high grade point average, some work outside of school, and participate in multiple sports these girls stand out in being exceptional in all areas of their lives! It was a huge honor being

their cheer coach this year. As we all know, anytime you put 21 girls into a room you can just assume it has a possibility to go downhill real fast from there. However, these girls have completely blown us away! This was not the case at all! They treat each other with respect and give constructive criticism when needed. They have shown maturity well above their age. We have grown to have a special relationship with each one of these girls and love them dearly. I tease that we will never have a better year than we have had this year. Each practice and performance was a true joy and they never caused hardship. They represented Diana well and with class everywhere they went. We are proud of the cheerleaders they have become today, but more proud of the role models and good character they portray that will last a lifetime. This year we attended the Varsity UIL Spirit Competition in January. The girls competed in three different categories: Fight Song, Band Dance, and Game Day Crowd Leading Cheer. They got almost all perfect scores in the fight song and good scores as well in the other two categories. This pushed us over into finals. The girls placed 20th out of 74 squads in the 3A division. Varsity Spirit said that the 3A division was the largest and most competitive division at state. We could not be more proud of the girls and a job well done putting Diana on the map in the cheer world. We can not wait to see what next year has in store for us!

thoughts and ideas. igh S l c ho ol P r i nc ip a This year, we have recognized an individual staff member as our Employee of the Month and a student from each grade level as our Students of the Month. As for our employee nominee, our staff looks for those who also exhibit great pride for the campus , someone who goes above and beyond to help their fellow staff member, students and community. We have so many deserving people, which makes New Diana High School a tremendous place to work. Our staff has done a tremendous job on their nominations and the wonderful things they say about each other. We are very proud of those who have received this recognition. For our students, we look at character, integrity, hard work, growth in their academics, presence on campus and overall who we believe represents New Diana High School with great pride and support of their fellow students. We are very proud of all our kids and their accomplishments. We want to thank our community for your continued support for our campus. Thank you again and we look forward to many more success this Spring and as we end the year! H r,

We have had a tremendous year up to this point. Our kids and staff have done a fantastic job coming together as a whole. Thank you for taking pride of our NDHS name. We have had many successes which will be highlighted as well in our district newspaper. Thank you to our directors, sponsors, staff and coaches for pushing our kids towards excellence and raising the bar. I wanted to add a couple highlights for our campus as well. As a focus this year, we wanted to help make sure parents and community members knew they were welcome on campus as well as their input. Each month, we have had a Principal's Coffee for our parents and community members. The focus for these meetings is to pull back our curtain to provide our community information about the on-goings of our school, get their feedback on questions and or possibly clarify certain aspects of the campus. Ultimately, it is an opportunity to have open and candid conversations. We have had 5 thus far and I cannot thank our parents and community enough for taking time to be a part of this. I truly believe this will help continue to grow our school's and our community as well as provide an avenue to share

NASA Approved Flight Profile

New Diana High School This year, the New Diana Rocket Society is creating a rocket designed to travel 100,000 feet high (19 miles). Not only is the destination of the rocket extreme, but so is the project itself. This year the students must build the entire rocket from scratch; everything from the nose cone to the engine must be crafted from their hands alone, without the help of the teacher. In November, the flight profile was approved by NASA and students started the actual design process. The design is now being turned into reality. Once our rocket is complete in June/July, we will travel to White Sands, New Mexico to have the Army launch our rocket. Students are working hard and we still need to raise quite a bit of money to finish our build and pay for our trip to New Mexico. The cost of transportation alone for the students is around $9,000. The building supplies range from $5,000- $11,000. We are asking for financial support in the acquisition and application of designing and building this rocket. Please make all checks out to New Diana High School. If you have any questions, please ask swarden@ndisd.org.

So many students participate in the New Diana Middle School program, we must have a mini competition to determine which teams will travel to the actual competition, since there is a limit of four teams in each division (arena or inventions). When participating in the inventions category, teams must think of a problem around their home, school, or community and create a robot from a Lego kit that will solve the problem. Teams are required to document attendance dates and times they meet, what each team member works on, and the use of the engineering design process from beginning to end. They are also interviewed by judges, with scores dependent upon how well the entire team participates in the discussion. This year’s inventions participants are Brayson Birdsong, Hayden Thomas, Garrison Conner, Kaden Sims, Colten Killingsworth, Rebecca Henson, Max Moses, Bryson Moses, and third place finishers Victoria Mills, Mallory Rudd, and Maelee Player. The arena competition involves the use of an autonomous robot, which is a robot programmed to do things without human intervention as opposed to using a remote control. Robots attempt to earn points by completing tasks such as picking up, scooting, scooping, and moving items like checkers, cotton balls, practice golf balls, and sections of pvc pipe. The theme and tasks change every year and incorporate educational and/ or real life components. Each team has three matches, with opportunities to return to their “pit area” between matches to tweak programs so that they will hopefully improve on the next run. Students are not allowed any electronic devices or outside communication with parents or coaches to ensure programming is done strictly by students. New Diana teams placed 8th, 10th, 15th, and 17th and included Noel Starr, Rebecca Schoon, Daniel McElwee, Andrew Rodgers, Justin Nugent, Shane Palmer, Symry Mitchell, Gavin Winn, and Brendan Donaghy.

Middle School competes at TCEA 2018 Robotics

Middle School The 7th & 8th grade girls begin the season working hard to learn the fundamentals of the game. They were able to compete against some stiff competition throughout the season. The 7th grade girls lost in the Championship game of the Gladewater Tournament, as well as, finishing the district season with a record of 9-1. The young ladies showed not only improvement, but a true competitors spirit throughout the season. While the 8th grade team struggled through several obstacles throughout the year, they managed to show substantial improvement with each game. The 8th grade girls were 0-10 in district play, but managed to compete every game until the buzzer sounded. Very proud of both these teams.

We are currently 8-4 overal and 2-1 in District 16-3A. We started off Spring Break with a loss to Harleton and then we got beat convincingly by Hughes Springs 12-1. However, your Eagles have bounced back and beat and dominated Elysian Fields on Friday invoking the mercy rule with an 11-0 win in 5 innings and beat the tenth ranked 4A school in Texas (Pleasant Grove) 10-6. We have our rivalry game coming up Tuesday, March 21st against Ore City. Please come out and support your Eagles baseball team.

The JV girls fought through a tough season. The ladies only had 7 players to compete through a tough preseason and district schedule. The Lady Eagles managed an overall record of 4-14 & 2-12 in district play. Although their record isn’t what the ladies wanted, they showed fight and improvement throughout the season. The Varsity girls showed improvement all season. The ladies ended the year at 4-21 & district 1-13. The girls were able to win more games than the previous season which gives them something to build on. For their hard work the team received the following accolades from the district coaches:

They are Austin Green, Cooper Holland, Addison Holt, Isaiah Martinez, Cade Medlin, and Cody Stanley. There are huge shoes to fill with the graduation of Tristan Swains record breaking season and the production and leadership of Lane Meshell and Jordan Stroud but I believe this group will figure out how and they are up to the task.

It was a very warm and windy day in Rockwall May 27th 2017. We were playing in the Region 2 SemiFinals against Whitesboro. We lost a heartbreaker in Game 1. We have to win both games Saturday to move on to the Regional Finals and a chance to go to the State Tournament. We came up short and lost 2-0. For our returners and myself that day and series has left a bitter taste in our mouths. 2018 will be about finishing. Our team theme and motto will be to Respect All and Fear None #GRIT. GRIT (Great Response In Tough Times). We will be young (starting at times 6 sophomores) but are being led and anchored by a fine senior class.

High School There are a lot of reasons to be excited about what was accomplished this year by all the high school teams. Varsity finished off the season only one game away from playoffs. For the first time in years New Diana was able to field Varsity, JV, and Freshman basketball teams. With 21 returning high school basketball players and 14 incoming freshman, the potential for great things is definitely there and growing. With the foundation laid and the commitment that has been demonstrated in these players, the Eagles have a lot to be proud of and many great days ahead. ad
