From the Editor WE LOVE ALASKA GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN! Sen. John McCain couldn’t have chosen a better person to serve as his running mate and future Vice President. Not many people knew her name prior to Sen. McCain making the announcement on August 29 before an enthusiastic crowd of thousands usands in Dayton, Ohio. But since then, we have fallen in love with the 44 year old old, happily married, hockey mother of five. As we stated in our last issue, we will focus on a different aspect of John McCain’s life and campaign. In this issue we will focus on his running mate. In other Teen Age Republican news, last year’s entire Executive Committee was re-elected to serve another term in their posts. At our first meeting of the school year, seniors Colin Swearingen, Kyle Hickox, and Jessica Cowing were rere elected as Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary-Treasurer Treasurer respectfully. All three won unanimously, demonstrating the confidence among members of their ability to lead during this important election year. CONGRATULATIONS!

THE RUNNING MATE ISSUE
The Palin Family: From L-R back row: son Track and husband Todd, second row: daughter Willow, Governor Sarah Palin, daughter Bristol, at front daughter Piper.
SARAH PALIN SHARES OUR VALUES On election night 2006, most Republicans were left numb by the trouncing they received. However, some stars shine brightest in the darkest of times. This was true for Sarah Palin. Although an underdog in the Republican primary, she managed to defeat a very popular incumbent governor. Then she won a landslide victory on November 7, 2006. A Republican star was born. She is one of eight women currently serving as the governor of a state. She is Alaska’s first female and youngest governor. She is also the first governor to be born after Alaska was made a state. And Alaskans love their Governor. At a time when the President’s approval ratings are low and Congress’ are even lower, Gov. Palin is the most popular governor in the country. Her approval rating is in the 90s.
All one has to do is take a closer look to figure out why she is so popular – her values are our values. She attends church regularly and is staunchly pro-life. She is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and loves hunting (including caribou) and fishing. She played basketball in high school and led her team to the state championship. She married her high school sweetheart and they have five beautiful children. As a concerned mom, she got involved in her children’s school life including the PTA. Sarah Palin’s story doesn’t sound much different than many families in Columbia County - except this mom got into politics. And on November 4, when the American people elect John McCain President, Sarah Palin will get into the history books as the first woman Vice President.
THE RUNNING MATE ISSUE HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBA BASKETBALL When Gov. Palin was a student at Wasilla High School in Wasilla, Alaska, she served as point guard and captain of the basketball team. Although the team was an underdog, she led the Warriors to the 1982 state championship. She was so competitive that her teammates gave her the nickname “Sarah Barracuda.” But she kept it all in perspective, never forgetting what was important. As head of the Fellowship of Christian stian Athletes, she led the team in prayers before each game.
High School sweethearts – Todd and Sarah Palin
“FIRST DUDE” TODD PA PALIN Todd Palin isn’t like other First Husbands. While most husbands of high powered women work white collar jobs, Todd is blue collar to the core. Part Yupik Eskimo, he has spent most of his life working in Alaska’s two most physically demanding industries – oil and fishing. He is also four-time time winner of the world’s longest and most grueling snowmobile race, the 2,000-mile mile Tesoro Iron Dog contest. His toughness has earned him the title “First Dude.” For Gov. Palin, being married to her high school sweetheart eetheart is a dream come
true. In her high school yearbook, on the class page, she wrote that her ambition was to “sit sit in a broadcast booth with Howard Cosell broadcasting basketball games played by her boyfriend, Todd Palin.”
TRIG – BRAVE VICTORY In the spring of 2006, Gov. Palin faced the toughest challenge of her life; life her fifth child, Trig, was born with Down’s syndrome. Studies in the late 90s showed that more than 80 percent of prenatal Down’s syndrome diagnoses end in abortion. Although she learned months in advanced of her baby’s condition, bringing this beautiful child into the world was the only option. "We've both been very vocal about being pro-life," life," Palin said of her and Todd. "We understand that every innocent life has wonderful nderful potential." They named the child Trig which is a Norse word meaning “true” and “brave victory.” The day after the birth birth, Todd and Sarah issued a statement saying, “We feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives.”

THE RUNNING MATE ISSUE are quick to recognize this. "It was Senator McCain who refused to hedge his support for our troops in Iraq, regardless of the political costs," she said. "And you know what? As the mother of one of those troops, and as the commander of Alaska's National Guard, uard, that's the kind of man I want as our commander commander-inchief."
Track Palin heads to Iraq this month
SARAH PALIN: WAR MOTHER MOT On September 11, 2007, the sixth anniversary of the evil terrorist attacks, Gov. Palin’s oldest son Track enlisted in the United States Army. He attended boot camp in Fort Benning, Georgia. Track is an infantry soldier and this month he will be deployed to Iraq. Gov. Palin is no different than the thousands of other mothers who have watched their sons and daughters go off to defend freedom. As Commander-In-Chief Chief of the Alaska National Guard, she has seen the war firsthand. In July 2007, she traveled to a military base in Kuwait and visited Alaska’s ’s 3rd Battalion, 297th Infantry. On the way home she visited wounded troops in Germany. Like any war mother, she is proud of Track’s decision but certainly knows the risks. "I certainly have thought about it; the mixed emotions we all feel will be something mething that binds us together," she was quoted as saying.. "But we don't regret that our son or daughter has made this decision." In the face great adversity, Sen. John McCain never wavered vered in his support for our troops. Palin and other war mothers
