THE PETER HOUSEMAN YOUTH LEAGUE THE PETER HOUSEMAN YOUTH LEAGUE enter their 50th playing season.
S C 7 A S T M e a
When Peter Houseman, ex Chelsea footballer, moved to Oakley in 1967 little did he realise how much of a legacy he would leave behind. Initially, he coached local boys in the art of football, but it did not take long before word got around and the numbers attending increased. Seeking help from other members of the community Peter was able to form a league consisting of 6 teams. These were Oakley, South Ham, Wellington, Buckskin, Rotherwick and Worting. They called the league The Basingstoke and District Sunday League. Sadly in 1977 Peter, his wife Sally and two other friends, were tragically killed in a car accident. 50 years on, over 230 teams from nearly 50 clubs are registered to play in the League, now called The Peter Houseman Youth League. It encompasses teams from Basingstoke, Andover, Newbury, Thatcham, Reading and surrounding villages. A celebratory Dinner is being held at the Apollo Hotel, Basingstoke on 10th February 2018 to mark this milestone. Tickets are £25 per head and the current committee would be delighted to see ex players, managers, club officials, referees and even supporters attending the event. If you are interested in attending the Dinner please email johnmmcbryde@hotmail. com for more information. Closing date for tickets is Friday 15th December 2017.

All our children have settled really well now, and we have been out and about at Old Down. Every week we have a forest walk to find autumn treasure, watch how things around us are changing with the season and enjoy a snack amongst the trees. With their treasure, conkers, acorns and leaves the children have been creating some super-imaginative collages. On Halloween we had a messy day! The children made glitter string paintings and we had jelly with spiders in! For snack they had a treat of edible spider biscuits. Continuing with the season’s theme, we took the children for a walk to Sainsburys too! The children chose some vegetables which we took back to Snapdragons and made a lovely winter vegetable soup which we had for snack, it was delicious! During our sponsored walk the children hunted for their favourite characters at the park and we had a lovely sing-along at the end. We would like to thank our wonderful parents for their support with this event, which raised well over £300! This will be used for some lovely new resources for the group. On the 21st November we had a parent session, and invited all our children and parents in to make fruit kebabs! We all had a lovely time and again, thank you to our super parents for your support. The next day we had a Christmas Craft morning for all our children that are on next years waiting list. If you weren’t able to join us don’t worry, we also have our Open Day on 3rd March so you can still come along to have a look at the pre-school, and if you have yet to register your child, it is not too late to do so! Just call Jane on 01256 818857 and she will do the rest! We are very much looking forward to our performance of the Christmas Jingle Show and can’t wait to see what the children are doing, we have some wonderful characters so it should be a good one! We can’t believe how quickly this term is passing and before we know it, it will be January and we’ll be looking forward to spring and preparing our Dragons for their transition to big school! From staff and children at Snapdragons may we wish you all a peaceful Christmas and prosperous 2018.
KEMPSHOTT INFANT SCHOOL Christmas is on the horizon!
The glitter came out in Year R for the glorious firework paintings and will not be put away now until January! We are looking forward to our Christmas Fair and our Nativity Plays but there is plenty to do before then! Year R learned all about Healthy Eating this week when a team of ladies from HC3S our school caterers came to visit. They brought a variety of fruits and vegetables for us to try. We made fruit kebabs and tried vegetable crisps, (so much healthier and delicious!) and different flavours of houmous. It was great fun! The Year 1 children are really enjoying the story of The Tiger Who Came to Tea. They had a huge shock when they walked into their classrooms to find empty food packets and overturned chairs! Clearly there had been a very large and hungry visitor in their year group! They have also been finding out about why we wear poppies and have each made beautiful tissue paper poppies of their own. Divali has really caught the children’s imagination. They have used rice and coloured paper to design some beautiful patterns and have learned about the celebration. Year 2 have looked at the history of flight. They have learned about the Wright Brothers and the first powered flight. They very carefully traced the plane designed by the Wright Brothers, concentrating very hard to include all the detail of the wooden struts. They have also produced some fantastic writing around the poem, Overheard on the Saltmarsh by Harold Monro. They used adjectives, alliteration and similes and really showed great imagination and extensive vocabulary. Well done Year 2! So much to fit in before the glitter takes over!
KEMPSHOTT JUNIOR SCHOOL ReporterLily and Gaby Year 6 We have had a very busy few weeks at Kempshott:
Year 6 performed Twelfth Night at the Haymarket and it went really well, our cast are all stars in the making! Four schools performed and the parents were impressed by them all. After performing to the school, Year 5 can’t wait for next year. Year 5 enjoyed their day when the travelling Space Dome visited, they learned all about the solar system and space. “Being in the Space Dome was really cool, it felt like we were travelling through the solar system!”. Year 4 continue their learning about the ‘Vicious Vikings’, and are enjoying learning Viking dances. Year 3 have visited Basingstoke Town Centre as part of their Geography and looked at all the important historical places. Children learned about the Triumphal Gates, St Michael and about when Jane Austen danced at the Old Barclays Bank. This year our charity of the year is The Pink Place. The Pink Place are a local charity supporting men and women suffering from cancer. We have held toy and sweet sales and look forward to some of our pupils visiting the Pink Place to see it in action. Our Christmas Fair is on Friday 1 December at 3.15pm, please come along and support our school. There will be lots to enjoy to help you get in the festive spirit. Our choir, Glee, will be singing Christmas Carols outside Tesco at Buckingham Parade at 5pm on 1 December.
PARK ON MY DRIVE SCHEME
Kempshott Infant and Junior Schools are looking for ways to encourage our children and parents to walk a little further to school and also try to ease some of the congestion around our surrounding roads. We are hoping to start a “Park On My Drive Scheme”. If you have a spare space on your drive and would be happy for one of our parents to park there whilst they are dropping off their child at school, please could you contact either school office with your details. Once we have this information we will then match you with a family. We are hoping to make our local roads safer for our children, their families and for our neighbours and really appreciate your help with this. I think of it as being a bit like being a deputy head of a school. I am writing this month because, as you may or may not know, the Rev. Kelvin and Jane Taylor left St. Mark’s at the end of May. They had been with us for nine years and we are sad to see them go. Many exciting things have happened in the church and community under their leadership.

My Beautiful Blonde
She is something so very special and means a great deal to me With lovely eyes and a pleasant smile, such a lovely sight to see I love to caress her soft blond hair whilst looking into her eyes Quite often when she kisses me I see the stars light up in the skies With looks from envious strangers I walk with her tight by my side To fend off unwanted overtures without trouble, flowing with the tide Her admirers are many and she indiscreet when out for a walk in the park I see their obvious intentions, but they’ll have to whistle , in the dark. Sitting quietly by the river where never a word or sound be spoken My arm around her and her body on mine our peace lies soft and unbroken Her name is Maggi and nothing can be seen to ever come between us Because as far as anyone else is concerned we both could be living on Venus I am her protector or maybe she’s mine, of the answer I’m non too sure But one thing I know she’s the love of my life and a female I’ll always adore My love for her is so very very strong and something to be treasured Because she is my dog my very own pet and a beautiful blond German Shepherd
The Radiance of Christmas
Bob Newman Eagle Close
The sparkle of Christmas Here and there lies,
Reflecting perhaps on the Fresh-fallen snow.
For instance it’s found In our young children’s eyes
But the one that shines greatest, That occasioned our feast,
It also shines forth From the festooning lights,
Was the astral messenger That appeared in the east.
Eye-catching displays, The most festive of sights.
So at this time of year, Let us all play our part
The glittering shop windows Too cast their glow,
By reflecting God’s light, From the depths of our heart.
THE SPANISH CAT
Under the shade of the Ficus I sat Letting just thought after thought run free When I was disturbed by a wonderful cat White and black and stripey was he.
So saying, he left and passed me by Under the shade of the Ficus tree But sat on the table out in the sun And paid no attention at all to me.
‘Puss, puss,’ I slowly and stupidly cried Under the shade of the Ficus tree But he my calling him did deride. ‘I hope you’re not talking’, he said, ‘to me: I am a Spanish cat, and so I don’t understand the English “puss”. I am a cat of the world, you see And I’ll have you know that I’m no wuss.’

FESTIVE RUBBISH AND RECYCLING COLLECTION CHANGES Christmas can mean extra rubbish, for example wrapping paper can’t be recycled. Therefore, extra sacks will be collected in the first collection Christmas. As normal there will be no limit on how much residents can recycle. This year unless adverse weather affects bin rounds, collections should return to normal from Monday 15 January 2018. To check the day your bin is collected www.basingstoke.gov.uk/bincollections or call 01256 844844 More bottles this Christmas? Let the council know if you need a free second glass collection box for extra bottles over Christmas or residents are able to get a glass bin as an alternative to a box if they often have lots of bottles and jars to recycle. The red 140 litre bins can be ordered for £25.63 online at www.basingstoke.gov.uk/glassbin. More information on what can and can’t be recycled is available on the council’s website at www.basingstoke.gov.uk/recycle or by calling the council on 01256 844844. Thinking of getting a real Christmas tree this year? Don’t forget to recycle it after Christmas at one of the drop-off points across the borough from Wednesday 3 January until Sunday 28 January 2018. BASINGSTOKE LIONS CLUB (Website www.basingstokelions.org.uk) As we had no fundraising event of our own to occupy us this month, ten of us toddled off to Andover to
support their Lions Club’s Pink Pig Race and Giraffe Sprint in aid of the Children’s Hospice. The Lions performed admirably. Alas, the same cannot be said of the electrically powered Pigs and Giraffes which were subject to a torrent of encouragement (abuse) as they raced (juddered) towards the winning post. It was a really good fun evening and I’m sure the Hospice benefitted accordingly. World Sight Day (WSD): This United Nations and Lions Clubs International supported day is always the second Thursday of October. 45 million people across the world are blind, very many through preventable or curable conditions. This has been a central concern of Lions Clubs since their birth in 1917. Here in Basingstoke we are lucky to have Ann Vicars, who is very well versed in the subject, to organize our awareness and advice stall in Festival Place on the day. We are also very lucky to have marvelous support from all the opticians in the town and from organisations like Helping Hands for the Blind, the Macular Disease Society and others. It is amazing how many people stop by the stall on the day with questions which can either be answered on the spot, referred to the appropriate Society or the helpful Council services. Throughout the year Lions Clubs across the country collect redundant pairs of spectacles which are forwarded for cleaning, grading and distribution to the world’s poorest people. We collected 1500 on WSD making our total since April over 3000. Thank you everyone. Welfare: We spent £700 to replenish our stock of “Message in a Bottle” packs. This scheme encourages people at risk to keep their medical/ medicine details in one of our special bottles in their fridge so that in the event of an incident requiring emergency service attendance the team can react accordingly. It is a free service and packs can be obtained from GPs surgeries and chemists. UPCOMING December will see us out and about collecting at various retail outlets as usual and we will be doing a “Sausage Sizzle” at Bunnings on 16th December. 10/02/2018 Moscow Drug Club at QMC – very entertaining. 03/03/2018 Swimathon at Town Centre Pool – great fun but exhausting. 17/03/2018 Murder Mystery at St Leonards Oakley – who knows? Details of each event can be found on our website www.basingstokelions.org.uk LIONS CLUB MEMBERSHIP: Put your contact details on the “Contact Us” page of our website and someone will get in touch.

KEMPSHOTT UNDER FIVES PRESCHOOL Kempshott Under Fives is part of Hatch Warren Under Fives Preschool. December is always a magical month at Kempshott Under Fives, there is always so much planned and so much to prepare! Sadly we said goodbye to Yvonne, our Preschool Leader, at the end of November. Yvonne has been offered the opportunity to combine her childcare experience with her volunteering work and her faith in a role as an outreach worker for the Methodist church. In her leaving speech Yvonne said, “It is with sadness that I will be leaving the preschool, it has been an honour to have met and watched your children grow and develop into the wonderful little people they are. I have had the privilege to work with the most amazing individuals who understand the importance of the early years and have been blessed with wonderfully supportive parents.” We wish her lots of luck. December is a wonderful time of year for circle time – we’ll be talking about what Christmas is, about special people and family and giving presents to others. We’ll also be talking more about sending cards, cooking festive foods and about helping others at this special time of year. Of course, we’ll also be hearing about Father Christmas and what’s top of the Christmas lists this year too! It’s also our favourite time of year for crafts – we have a month of glitter, bright colours and sparkle on the craft tables with cards, decorations and Christmas creations to make. The tree is up and has been fantastically decorated by all of our clever little hands. Our Christmas performance is our highlight of the term and it’s been a busy time preparing. Lots of little superstars will take to the stage to perform our Christmas play for parents. The Christmas play always ties in well this term’s Communication and Language learning target - for children to maintain attention, sit quietly and introduce storylines into plays – this is a perfect opportunity to demonstrate how well our amazing children are doing. And of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas without a party – so before our little ones take to the stage, they’ll be having a fun-filled Christmas party. And if we’ve all been good, we might even get a surprise visit from Father Christmas! Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you back at preschool on 4th January 2018. To enquire about a space at Kempshott Under Fives, please contact 07951 660401, or email email@example.com. You can also take a look at our website www.hatchwarrenunderfives.co.uk and like our Facebook page, “Kempshott Under Fives”. Don’t forget we also run a fabulous drop-in baby and toddler group. Our PrePlay group runs on Friday mornings during term time at 9.15-10.30am at the Hatch Warren Community Centre. No need to book, just turn up and play.

CHANGING YOUR MIND ABOUT SOMETHING YOU'VE BOUGHT
You don’t have an automatic right to get your money back if you just change your mind about something you’ve bought and there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s the same no matter how expensive the item was - it’s really down to the seller whether they offer you anything. There are certain steps you can take, depending on where you bought the item. If you think that there’s a problem with the item, you might have different rights. If you bought the item from a shop If you’ve changed your mind about something you bought in a shop, first check their own policy on returns. Even though they don’t have to do it by law, lots of shops will say you can return items within 14 or sometimes even 30 days, as long they’re not used. The shop’s returns policy might be written on your receipt, or you could check their website or call your local branch to ask. Bear in mind that shops often reduce the amount of time you have to return items bought in a sale, although you’ll still always be protected if something is faulty. You’ll stand a better chance if you take your receipt with you and return the item in its original packaging. It’s up to them what they offer you - you’ll need to decide whether to accept it or not. If you bought the item online, over the phone or by mail order You automatically get a 14-day ‘cooling-off period’ when you buy something you haven’t seen in person - unless it’s bespoke or made to measure. The cooling-off period starts as soon as you receive your order, and there doesn’t need to be anything wrong with the item for you to get a refund. You won’t get a cooling-off period when you buy: • something that deteriorates quickly - like flowers or food • an item that was personalised or custom-made for you • anything from a private individual rather than a business • a CD, DVD or software, if you break the seal on the wrapping If you paid for standard delivery when you bought something, the seller has to refund this if you return it. If you chose a more expensive delivery option, you'll have to pay the difference. Use your cooling-off period
What is income tax
You need to tell the seller you don’t want the item within 14 days of receiving it. Once you’ve told the seller, you’ve got another 14 days to actually send the item back.
Income tax is a tax on income including:
Sellers must give you certain information when you buy something without seeing it in person. This includes their business address and phone number, and details of your right to cancel. If you didn’t get this in writing (they’re allowed to send it by email) then your cooling off period is increased even further, to a year and 14 days.
earnings from employment, including benefits in kind such company car How to return the item Most sellers give instructions on how to return items, and often include returns labels with your 14 days earnings from self-employment order. You usually have to return the item after telling the seller - check your terms and conditions for how long you have. most pensions income, including state, occupational and You may have to pay the cost of posting something back to the seller. The seller should have told you who has to pay for pensions this when you bought the item. For example, it could have been in the terms and conditions. If they didn’t tell you, they will have to refund your costs.social security benefits postage some You don't have to return item in its original packaging, but you do need to make sure it’s packaged in a way that theinterest on most savings means it doesn’t get damaged. Sellers can ask you to pay if something gets damaged because it wasn’t packaged properly. The seller can also askyou to pay (or reduce your shares refund) if you’ve reduced the value of the item, eg if you wore shoes income from (dividends) outside and scuffed the soles - but they can only do this if it’s in the terms and conditions. rental income If your contract says you must use the original packaging, this is likely to be considered an ‘unfair contract term’. You can income a return trust. tell the seller this and see if they’ll agree tofrom accept the without the original packaging. minimum cooling-off period that a seller must give you. Make sure you check the terms and 14 days is the absolute conditions in case they’ve given you more time to change your mind - many choose to do so.
It’s a good idea to get a certificate of posting from Royal Mail when you post the item - you can use this to prove to the seller that you posted the item. The seller has to pay you the refund within 14 days from when they receive the item. Need further information or Help? United Sports Karate Organisation South- USKO Andy Hobday has been teaching karate at Kempshott Village Hall for 32 years!! And is now teaching the children of children he taught years ago! The Organisation is moving from strength to strength with 11 clubs in the Hampshire area. Andy's teaching is complimented by his wife who is a qualified primary school teacher along with several other highly experienced instructors. Several children, teens and adults were successful in taking their grading last month and were awarded with their new belts. Including three children from the 'Nifty Ninja' class, for children aged 4-7, who took their very first belt. Many of the Kempshott students are looking forward to the Winter Course in which some of them will be grading and all will have the opportunity to take part in a kata competition. ST. MICHAEL’S HOSPICE AND ST. MICHAEL’S HOME CARE WINTER UPDATE 2017 has been another very busy year for St. Michael’s Hospice. We’ve been privileged to help thousands of local residents though our different services and the community has been wonderful supporting the Hospice by raising nearly £3m, enabling us to keep our vital services free. During the year, the Hospice has also been celebrating its 25th Anniversary the focal point of which was an event in Winchester Cathedral attended by well over 700 people.
As I am sure you know St. Michael’s Hospice cares for patients on their in-patient unit and at home through the Community Palliative Care team. Over 550 people have been cared for this way but the hospice helps many more through its other services. Our social day service and therapeutic day service had over 1,300 visits and our clinical therapy team has had over 1,700 contacts with patients; using their specialist knowledge of physiotherapy and occupational therapy to help those in the hospice and in the community. We are able to reach out to patients and their families through our complementary therapy team, who provided nearly 3,000 treatments to patients and their families, and our bereavement service cared for and supported nearly 200 people last year. The incredible team of volunteers that underpin almost every area of the Hospice deliver the most passionate and dedicated support to staff and patients. Without these volunteers the Hospice would face substantial additional staffing costs and we continue to be incredibly thankful to them all. We have also grown to support staff and people in care homes through our award winning Six Steps Programme which has now accredited 17 local homes. In this way we can improve standards of care into the wider community and through our Befriending Service, run in conjunction with Odiham Cottage Hospital, support those who have needs which are not palliative. All of this work is underpinned by the amazing community we serve who supported our eight Hospice-led events last year, including the 5 & 10K Run, Big Wheel, and Moonlight Walk, in record numbers, and who also every year raise thousands of pounds holding their own events. Founded two years ago to provide a high quality option in the domiciliary care field and a new income stream for the Hospice, St. Michael’s Home Care supports a broad range of client needs. This growing business is now providing over 600 hours of care a week and continuing to grow steadily while meeting our commitment to quality care delivered by the very best staff. We look forward to another busy 2018 with many exciting activities and moments to build lasting memories around. Thank you to everyone who has supported us this year. From all the staff and volunteers at St. Michael’s Hospice and St. Michael’s Home Care we wish you a very merry Christmas.
ROTARY SHOEBOX APPEAL 2017 Last Tuesday night (31 October) we had our club’s first sorting evening of this year’s shoebox appeal and on behalf of our president Lindy Richardson I am writing to say a big thank you for your wonderful contributions. I know that the items will be put to good use and are well received, this was reinforced by a guest speaker, a lady from Romania, who gave us an insight into the impact of receiving these boxes. She was 10 and it was in the post-Communist era when she received her first box and had no concept of giving or receiving of presents at Christmas, it was very moving and had a profound effect on all of us confirming that we are doing the right thing and are helping people who are so less fortunate than us. We checked/made up, over 200 boxes Tuesday night and we hope that we will equal or even exceed last year’s total of 750 boxes sent out from the Basingstoke area. This will go to the Wessex region distribution centre and will be part of the 27,000 boxes this region sends to deserving children. I hope all goes well for you and look forward to receiving your contributions next year, once again thank you. Yours in Rotary

Old Down & Beggarwood Wildlife Group This year seems to have gone so quickly and Christmas is almost upon us. Amongst the dull and bleak winter days there are always some crisp, bright, clear days with blue skies and wonderful views from Old Down over to the railway and beyond and then in the other direction over towards Reading. There are still lots of birds to be spotted on both Old Down and Beggarwood. On Beggarwood last month not only was a beautiful Green Woodpecker seen pecking about on the grass but it was joined by a Great Spotted Woodpecker – that joint sighting does not happen very often. A Green Woodpecker was also seen on Old Down – perhaps the same one. Last month the work party on Old Down planted around 500 snowdrop and bluebell bulbs (native species of course). About this number were planted a couple of years ago but not all seem to have taken so another batch was felt to be needed. The mowing of the meadow on Old Down was rather late this year (Council having staff and equipment issues) but this seems to have been beneficial for the birds. Flocks of up to 8 Meadow Pipits and 10 Pied Wagtails have been seen gorging on the seeds left after the mowing. These numbers together are quite unusual for Old Down.
Great Spotted Woodpecker
Beggarwood now has Local Nature Reserve status – at last! The Council has produced a new management plan and regime but not sure what visible changes or improvements we will see. Work parties: For Old Down, we meet outside Old Down Hall every Thursday 10-12noon. For Beggarwood, we meet monthly at The Maze, usually on the third Saturday of the month 10 -12noon. Always check our website just in case there is a change in dates and also for further information about work parties and events. Internet: www.olddownandbeggarwood.org.uk
FUZZY DROVE CONSERVATION GROUP The wet and windy weather this Autumn has meant that we haven’t been able to hold all our planned working parties. We’re hoping for some crisp and dry days through the winter, so we can do everything we’d planned to do before we stop planting and clearing at the end of March. We’d also like to remind our supporters that we are continuing to build up a list of all the wildlife spotted in Fuzzy Drove or in adjacent gardens. Winter is an excellent opportunity for bird spotting, so if you are lucky enough to see something unusual in Fuzzy Drove please email email@example.com to let us know. A list of all the wildlife seen so far in Fuzzy Drove can be found on the ‘plants and wildlife’ page at www.fuzzydrove.co.uk. We only have one more working party planned before Christmas - on the 2nd December. We meet at 10am on Fuzzy Drove beside the entrance to Petrel Croft and our working parties last for a maximum of 2 hours (including a coffee break!). Working parties are automatically cancelled if the weather is wet. The dates can change at short notice for other reasons, so if you are interested in coming along and helping please see our website www.fuzzydrove.co.uk and click on ‘events and activities’ for more information, or find us on Facebook for the very latest updates.

Scouts in the Old Orchard On 11th November we hosted Worting St. Thomas Scouts for their autumn session in the Old Orchard. Despite a shaky start with the weather, everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. While the rain held off for most of the day, the trees continued to drip on the volunteers. Later on in the day the volunteers were joined by their parents and a couple of hangers on who helped by chewing sticks! The Scouts cleared an area of wild or reverted raspberries with the use of our "tree poppers". These are the two long yellow tools shown above. They set up camp and were able to provide welcome hot chocolate to all involved. With their help, we got through a huge amount of cutting and clearing. Several large patches of nettle and bramble that had not been cut for a couple of years were brush cut by conservation group members and cleared by the scouts and their parents. The Scouts will be back for their next session in the Orchard probably before Easter next year.
Travellers in Down Grange Meadow The Council evicted the travellers towards the end of October. It took the Borough’s Operations Team two days working with two tractors and trailers to remove nearly 7 tons of rubbish from the site. We must congratulate them for doing such a thorough job; you wouldn’t know that the travellers had ever been there. The fallout from the travellers’ visit was that the Council have blocked up the Homesteads Road entrance to the meadow with a huge mound of soil on the meadow side of the gate and installed two huge concrete filled metal piles in front. This may keep the travellers out but, unfortunately, it will keep us out as well.
Our Work Party dates for December and January are shown below. Please do come and join us if only for an hour or so as we really do need some extra help. We provide all equipment, but please bring your own gloves. Sunday, 10th December 10.00am—12.00 noon—Down Grange Meadow (Homesteads Road entrance) Thursday, 4th January 2.00—4.00pm—Old Orchard, Kendall Gardens Sunday, 14th January 10 00am—12 00 noon—Old Hedgerow, Down Grange (Behind 77-155 Coniston Road) Thursday, 25th January 2.00—4.00pm—Down Grange Meadow (Homesteads Road entrance)

While nature conservation in Stratton Park has been low key for some time the arrival of new volunteers means we have been reviewing our plans for the next three years. There are now a growing number of sporting and active visitors to the park — with Junior Park Run and Cyclo-cross now regulars along with the football teams and users of the tennis courts—which are still free to use at any time. We are developing new projects to engage with the scouts and guides who meet in the Scout Hall within the park and welcome all other suggestions for enhancing the richness of the park areas around the sports pitches. If you are a regular visitor or local resident and would like to add your suggestions please drop us a line at firstname.lastname@example.org We are also keen to hear from any budding web designers who want to practice their skills!

DECEMBER 2017 IN THE WILDLIFE GARDEN The flower beds Unless planting, don’t disturb the soil until spring if you want to encourage
more moth species into your garden. Moths spend the winter in their pupal form, often in the top layer of garden soil, or amongst leaves and plant debris on the ground. However winter is the ideal time for pruning many shrubs and trees when bare stems make shaping easier, and diseased wood is less likely to be hidden by leaves. Removing weak stems at this time promotes stronger growth of existing ones. Two climbers that should be pruned this month are grapevines and wisteria. After pruning your shrubs and trees, use what has been taken off to create log and stick piles. Since the 1930s half of the habitats for the decomposers and other creatures that live in decaying wood have disappeared. Our piles of prunings can create shelter and hunting grounds for small mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Wood boring insects, beetle grubs and woodlice will gradually take up residence and in turn can become food for frogs, toads, hedgehogs and birds. In early November I found a young hedgehog in my garden which I took to Hart Animal Rescue as it was too small to survive hibernation. They showed me a map that showed numerous hedgehog sightings around Basingstoke, even near Festival Place. However there are very few seen in the countryside around Basingstoke so maintaining a chemical free hedgehog friendly habitat in our town gardens is really important.
Birds If you haven’t already got any of these in your garden, put up a couple of roosting pouches for small birds such as wrens to shelter in.

Transition & Transformation
Friday 1st December at 5pm Hello. My name is Debbie Veel. I am one of the Licensed Lay Ministers (LLM’s or Readers
Come along and join St. Mark's Church and and Kempshott Junior School singing Christmas Carols at Buckingham Parade
as they are sometimes known) at St. Mark’s church. LLM’s are not ordained, so we don’t wear a dog collar, but we can do much of what a vicar can do with some notable exceptions. We can’t bless the communion wine and bread; we can’t marry people nor do we baptise anyone. Interestingly enough, we can lead funerals. Other than that we preach, lead worship, prayer and mid-week groups and we are involved in the running of the church. I think of it as being a bit like being a deputy head of a school.
For further information please call the Memory Club Manager, Jean Holmes-Morris, on 07525 133688 or Jose Morgan on 07960 211320

I am writing this month because, as you may or may not know, the Rev. Kelvin and Jane Taylor left St. Mark’s at the end of May. They had been with us for nine years and we are sad to see them go. Many exciting things have happened in the church and community under their leadership. For example- we have started a messy church (very informal craft, food, a short celebration and lots of fun for families of all ages 2.30pm -5pm every third Saturday); we have started doing the fabulous ‘Open the Book’ assemblies for the Y4’s in the junior school; started Saturday @ Saint Mark’s (2nd Saturday of the month from 9:30am) which is an informal chance to learn such things as your ancestry, try flower arranging go for walks or bike rides round Kempshott or find out about various things to do with IT or further education. We have employed an Outreach Worker and renovated our kitchen at church – if you have ever used the old kitchen at St. Mark’s you know what state it was in! All of this and much more under Kelvin’s leadership. Kelvin and Jane are off on a well-deserved long holiday to their favourite place- the Greek islands. We wish them well, as I am sure many of you do also.
Come and join the Basingstoke Concert Band as they perform a Christmas treat of traditional music and carols that the whole family will enjoy. The concert takes place at Sherfield-on-Loddon Village Hall on Wed 20 Dec at 8.00-9.30pm. Tickets cost £5 (which includes a glass of wine and mince pie) and can be purchased from the Band Secretary Janet Howard: 01256 781583, band mobile 07503 881241 or at the Village Hall on the evening – there is no charge for children under 16. The Band looks forward to seeing you there. It is a time of change and transition for them and for the church.
It may well be a time of change and transition for you too. You may be changing job; maybe moving house; having a new baby; getting married; leaving home for the first time to go to university or to travel. There may also be some less pleasant changes happening in your life- divorce, unemployment, bereavement.
In the church’s year, the weeks just gone still form part of the ‘Easter Season’. It was a time of transition and change for Jesus’ disciples too. They had travelled around the country with Jesus, listening to him teach and preach, watching him do miracles and healings. But they hadn’t quite understood ‘what he was really about.’
On Easter Sunday and on many occasions after that they met the risen Lord Jesus, and during this time, before He ascended to heaven, they began to understand all that He was teaching and explaining to them about God and about how much He loves each and every one of us. They finally did begin to comprehend ‘what He was really about.’ Many of what are called resurrection appearances in the Bible involve eating. This is important because it tells us that the risen Jesus had a real physical body -he wasn’t some kind of ghostly apparition.
Often the disciples didn’t immediately recognize Jesus-‘he was the same but different.’ The best analogy of this is when maybe you have had your hair done or get new glasses. Often people comment that there is ‘something a bit different about you’ but they cannot quite place their finger on it. During this transition period, Jesus appeared to his disciples in pairs, groups and once to 500 people in one go. This tells us that Jesus’ resurrection appearances couldn’t have been a hallucination. It is unlikely that 2 or 3 people, let alone 500 would have had the same hallucination!
Transition is unsettling and often make us feel ill at ease - It was for the disciples, it is for us at St. Mark’s and it may well be for you. We wonder, “What we’ll do?” and “How we will manage?” Jesus promised to send his disciples a ‘helper’, which we call the Holy Spirit, to guide & support them and enable them to manage and find a way through.

PROBUS HEARS ABOUT A LIFE CHANGING RAIL JOURNEY
“Two first class tickets to Shanghai please” was how Liz Barron and her husband Tony requested the ticket office clerk at Barry in South Wales as they set out on the first stage of an epic train journey to Shanghai. Liz told the Probus Club of Basingstoke, the social club for retired professional and business managers, about how her grandfather Leslie Pardoe had set out on this journey 100 years before. He was a 21 years old bachelor going to start a new job as the deputy surveyor for the authorities in this Chinese city. Shanghai had become an important trading port where British, French and Americans had established enclaves.
“As a little girl I was fascinated with all the Chinese artefacts in my grandma’s house” Liz explained. ”And when grandpa’s diary came to light and I realised that we were coming up to a century since he made that journey the idea came to mind that maybe we could replicate it.” Liz and Tony took eleven months to plan their trip to ensure that they were able to stay in the same cities and hotels as Leslie had experienced on this 6000 miles adventure. Although she and Tony live in Southampton they decided to start from Barry just as Leslie Pardoe had done a century before. The route took them on the short stretch to Cardiff and then to London Paddington. They stayed the night in the same London hotel as her grandfather had done and then went down to Ramsgate to cross the Channel to Ostend. They had a train journey though northern Europe stopping for short breaks in Brussels, Cologne, Berlin, Warsaw, Minsk and Moscow. Then they had four days and nights on the Trans Siberian railway to Listvyanka on Lake Baikal in Siberia. From there the Trans Manchurian railway took them via Harbin to Changchun in Northern China. The only change to the route was that her grandfather had taken a three days ferry from Dailen across the East China Sea to Shanghai but the service no longer operates so they completed the final leg by overnight train which passed through Beijing. Leslie’s journey had taken 15 days while the journey for Liz and Tony was longer at 24 days because they wanted to take in some sight-seeing knowing that it was unlikely they would pass this way again. The large ex-pat communities in Shanghai enjoyed a good social life with horse racing and the Ravenscourt Country Club being some of the attractions. Leslie Pardoe met there and married Liz’s grandmother, Margaret. Liz’s father, John, was the youngest of their four children. The family left Shanghai after 27 years when the Japanese took over the city in 1940 and they escaped back to England via Canada. Leslie Pardoe had travelled first class for £10 7s 3d but it cost Liz and Tony £25,000 to replicate this transit. For more information about the Probus Club of Basingstoke, the social club for retired professional and business managers, see their web site www.probusbasingstoke.wordpress.com or phone their secretary Paul Flint on 07770 886521 for an informal chat.
As the end of the year approaches and the shops are once more filled with Christmas items that we didn’t know we wanted or needed it is hard to believe that in seven weeks or so the festivities will all be over. 2017 has been another successful year for Kempshott WI we have seen our membership numbers increase once again and of course this means that it has been possible to engage in more activities. We have had trips out by car, we have a coach going to Stonor Park later this month and we have had a varied and informative selection of speakers as well as lunches, skittles and walks. Already plans for our speakers for 2018 are underway and as the WI is celebrating 100 years of women’s suffrage there will be many events planned that will bring our WI together with others in Hampshire. In October we welcomed Becky Peacock from the Mid Hants railway who spoke of the role women have played to keep the railways running during the war and on the 27th November Judy Theobold presented a light-hearted talk on Christmas and other problems. Our annual Christmas party takes place in early December but attendance is restricted to members and invited guests. One change to our WI in 2018 is that our previous monthly craft afternoons are to become more social occasions, although crafters are very welcome we would also like to invite those ladies who already come to our monthly meetings but would also like to join us for our social afternoons. Finally could I please ask you to remember people who will be on their own at this festive time of the year. The WI across the country is instigating various initiatives to combat loneliness as it is recognised this can be a very real problem for ladies on their own but a lot of people at this time of year have little contact with the outside world please remember them. If you require any further information on Kempshott WI please contact the President on 01256 460475 or me on firstname.lastname@example.org

Arun Mummalaneni and Sreeni Vavilala, chair and trustee of the Basingstoke Multi cultural forum joined local MP Maria Miller for a celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights on Monday 16th October in Downing Street. Diwali is the biggest festival in Hindu calendar. The reception was hosted by Secretary of state Priti Patel and brought together people from all over the country. Arun said, " It was a great honour to represent the Basingstoke Multicultural Forum at this national celebration of Diwali.' Maria said, "I am pleased that Basingstoke was so well represented at this important event. We have an increasingly diverse population in the Borough and the BMF does an outstanding job in building links between these new communities." To mark this celebration, third floor of the 10 Dowing street was lit up candles. One of the big halls in the third floor was decorated with hindu idols of lord Rama and Sita. This reception was attended by prominent Hindu, Sikh and Jain leaders along with noted Indian business leaders and high commissioner of India. Arun Mummalaneni and Sreeni Vavilala are also founder members of the Telugu Association of Basingtoke TAB-UK, south Indian community organisation based in Basingstoke.

HOW TO BEGIN DIETING You want to lose weight; you want the fat to drop off your body overnight. I get that, but I’m going to be honest with you‌ If it’s a quick fix you’re looking for, you’re wasting your time reading this article!
Super fast weight loss is unrealistic, it’s unsustainable and above all, it’s a dreadful way to diet. It’s time to get out the mind-set of food deprivation, excessive exercise and being unhappy until you look like Beyonce. Losing weight, losing fat, takes TIME. You didn’t put that amount of weight on overnight so don’t expect to lose it overnight. Okay, so now we are on the same page‌ This diet experience is going to be a lifestyle change, this weight loss journey is going to bring happiness, health and results, but it’s going to take TIME! Three things you need to do to begin a diet: Decide that you are READY. A half-hearted investment will lead to half-hearted results. A lifestyle change means working to alter deeply engrained bad habits every single day. Not Monday to Friday, every day. I’m not talking big changes; we know big changes are not sustainable. To begin with I’m talking small nutritional habit changes. For the first week, can you commit to eating a portion of vegetables with every single meal you eat? If your answer to that is no, then come back to this article when the answer is yes! ď Š Set realistic goals Goals are important, especially when you’re dieting. Long term and short term goals. Attach a very deep emotional connection to this goal. If you don’t have a goal, you are lacking direction, and we know what a lack of direction means later down the line‌ you lose interest and you go back to having a half-hearted investment in your weight loss journey. Back to step one! Believe in yourself So many of you have been yo-yo dieters all your life. You have lost faith in the dieting industry, because you have failed so many times. Every time you’ve failed, it knocks your confidence a step further and you stop believing that you will ever be successful. If you don’t believe in yourself, your likelihood of self-sabotage sky rockets. Believe to achieve. If you have got this far, you’re probably still waiting for the nutritional advice that is going to transformation your world. As much as my passion evolves around food and nutrition, if you’re head is not in the right space, any nutritional advice I give is going in one ear and out the other! “There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairsâ€? – Zig Ziglar Follow me and join the conversation: Website: www.foodislifeuk.com Facebook: @foodislifeuk Instagram: foodislife.uk Twitter: @foodislifeuk Yours In Health,

Listening Night Owls
Who we are, what we do We’re just ordinary people, who give up our time to listen. Anyone can talk to Samaritans, at any time, about whatever’s getting to them. They do not have to be suicidal.
What we need To find the right role for you, we ask all our potential volunteers to fill out an application form and attend a selection event. All volunteers attend induction training, and listening volunteers complete full Samaritans training. This training takes place over several months and is a great chance to meet other Samaritans volunteers and develop a good understanding of what your branch does.
What you get Each Samaritans volunteer gets something different from their time with us, whether it be developing a new skill or just the feeling of knowing you’re there for someone when they need it most. We operate a supportive and unique environment where you will receive full training and ongoing support from a network of volunteers.
Why we want you There are many ways to get involved as a Samaritans volunteer, whether it be as a listening or fundraising volunteer, or to help with publicity, there will be a place at Samaritans for you. We also reach out to the community by working with schools, colleges and universities, prisons, hospitals, and major music festivals. BASINGSTOKE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
Peter Sikora, our speaker in October, set up his first plant nursery in Herriard but moved it to Ripley in Surrey some eight years ago. Peter specialises in herbs and trades under the name of “The Culinary Herb Co” and won his first RHS Silver Gilt medal at the new Chatsworth show this year. I expect that when you think of herbs the words “parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme” come to mind but Peter grows over 200 varieties of herbs and 40 different mints, so quite a choice! During his practical talk and demonstration, we were advised on how to propagate different herbs, whether it be by cuttings or layering and how and when to successfully prune our herbs for the best results. The different soil types that suit specific herbs the best was explained and what we need to add to improve the soil if it’s needed. It was also noted that some herbs, e.g. parsley, prefer to be planted in the ground rather than in a pot. Combating pests and diseases is always a common question no matter what the topic and the various remedies for helping protect herbs was discussed. During the break for refreshments members were able to purchase some of the more unusual herbs that Peter had brought with him and he also judged some of the classes of our last competition for this year. STUDENT VOICE VISITS CIVIC OFFICES AS PART OF LOCAL DEMOCRACY WEEK On Thursday 12th October 2017 Members of Cranbourne’s Student Voice visited Basingstoke Council’s Civic offices to meet the Mayor and learn more about democracy and politics as part of Local Democracy week. One Year 9 student commented; “I thoroughly enjoyed the trip and meeting the Mayor was really cool, I learnt a lot about democracy and politics.” - Matthew Rogers-Mitchell. The Mayor and Mayoress both remarked at how impressed they were by our students, “These are the best students for asking questions in my time as Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Mayoress, no other students have asked such good questions as these Cranbourne students!”- Jane Frankum The Student Voice at Cranbourne is very proactive and busy working on a number of projects to help improve life at Cranbourne for all students. This Half-Term, projects have ranged from healthy canteen food, toilet refurbishment, feedback for improvements to the reward system and being excellent ambassadors at our Annual Open Evening. We hope the trip has inspired students to continue their great work for the rest of the academic year.
THE BOOK OF EXCELLENCE
At Cranbourne we strive for “Excellence In Everything” throughout school life. We were delighted to open our Book of Excellence in November 2017 which recognises student achievement. Students are nominated by their teachers in recognition of excellence from good behaviour in mock exams or brilliant pieces of work to helping their colleagues in class. All students nominated are invited to Mrs Aplin’s Office to celebrate their achievement on a Friday Morning. Mrs Aplin is very proud of all her students and looks forward to meeting with many more during these weekly celebrations!

QUESTION: Should I grant my children Lasting Power of Attorney?
Nia Wharry, Head of Wills & Estate Planning replies: We would advise everyone, especially those approaching old age, to consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). If you decided to grant your children a LPA, then if, for example, you suffered from a stroke and were unable to hold a pen, the LPA would enable them to gain access to your money and more easily organise your care and other needs. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, your children would have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your Deputy so that they could gain access to your funds. This is long, slow and expensive process. There are two different types of Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). One deals with your property and finance, and the other deals with personal welfare. The majority of people opt to create a property and finance LPA but some wish also to have the reassurance of a personal welfare LPA. ST. MARKS, KEMPSHOTT
It would be quite wrong to say that I dislike mince pies. But I mean... meh! What’s the point? They are though everywhere at this time of year, so I have ONE because it’s tradition. My relationship to the Brussel sprout is much darker. The Brussel sprout not only carries with it the full weight of tradition but the shadow of hypocrisy. I’ve spent more than a decade telling the children that eating their greens is “good for them”. So, on Christmas Day, we will all, each have ONE because it’s tradition.
To complete the introduction, and ensure that you know I have more grouch than the Grinch, and more humbug than Scrooge McDuck, let me rattle of a list of things I could quite happily do without. Anything polluted with Brandy sauce/cream/butter. Paper hats - they are always too small, and every year I look silly. Christmas Crackers - when the children spend longer playing with the Tat that came in them than they do with their proper presents. Christmas pudding especially gluten-free. And don’t even get me started on the subject of opening presents after lunch, which we have to do every other year because that’s the “tradition” on my wife’s side of the family. (I’m convinced that you good folk of Kempshott know that presents should be opened in the morning.) There are many things we do every year, simply because they are tradition. At Christmas we do things that we would never think to do at other times. Here at Saint Mark’s we realise that for some coming to church is just one of those Christmassy traditions. It might be a tradition that you look forward to. It might be a tradition you are forced into by the family and for some, you may only come because it is an hour away from the in-laws. Being realistic for some of you deciding between church and the in-laws will feel like choosing the lesser of two evils. We just wanted to make sure that you know, we understand this - it’s cool. However, and why ever you come, you are always welcome. We even put out extra chairs for you. The tradition of joining together to sing has always produced community spirit. It is fabulous that so many join us outside Tesco or in the Kestrel to sing carols during Advent. We do hope though that through the carols and our Christmas services, we can offer you something more than the buzzword of “Community Cohesion”. We hope to give you a sense of the Divine and the love of being part of God’s Family. Those of us, who come to Saint Mark’s more regularly, don’t come to meet to God - which perhaps takes a little explanation. The Christmas story is that Jesus, God’s son, was born into this world to bring God’s love and salvation. One of the many names this special child was given was ‘Immanuel’. Immanuel means ‘God with us’. We know that Jesus’ Divine Spirit is with us everywhere, all the time and that gives a purpose and energy to how we live every day. We know his Spirit is with you too – waiting for you to call to him. We come to church to step out of the busy-ness of life. We meet with others to help us focus and not be distracted. We hope that the time you spend with us is a place of calm away from the chaos of Christmas. A place where your soul can meet the Divine and be renewed. We are looking forward to seeing you. We’ll have the kettle on and this year I think we are having mulled wine, and mince pies – of course. Transition & Transformation

as they are sometimes known) at St.
GUTTER CLEARING SERVICE
I am writing this month because, as you may or may not know, the Rev. Kelvin and Jane Taylor left St. Mark’s at the end of May. They had been with us for nine years and we are sad to see them go. Many exciting things have happened in the church and community under their leadership. For example- we have started a messy church (very informal craft, food, a short celebration and lots of fun for families of all ages 2.30pm -5pm every third Saturday); BEFORE we have started doing the fabulous ‘Open the Book’ assemblies for the Y4’s in the junior school; started Saturday @ Saint Mark’s (2nd Saturday of the month from 9:30am) which is an informal chance to learn such things as your ancestry, try flower arranging go for walks or bike rides round Kempshott or find out about various things to do with IT or further education.
OUR HIGH POWERED, HIGH REACH VACUUM SUCKS OUT ALL THE MUCK
It is a time of change and transition for them and for the church.
It may well be a time of change and transition for you too. You may be changing job; maybe moving house; having a new baby; getting married; leaving home for the first time to go to university or to travel. There may also be some less pleasant changes happening in your life- divorce, unemployment, bereavement.

In the church’s year, the weeks just gone still form part of the ‘Easter Season’. It was a time of transition and change for Jesus’ disciples too. They had travelled around the country with Jesus, listening to him teach and preach, watching him do miracles and healings. But they hadn’t quite understood ‘what he was really about.’ On Easter Sunday and on many occasions after that they met the risen Lord Jesus, and during this time, before He ascended to heaven, they began to understand all that He was teaching and explaining to them about God and about how much He loves each and every one of us. They finally did begin to comprehend
