Issue 206 | February 2020
here does the time go, here we are with the February edition already. We have also seen our first snowdrops of the year!
We are still in need of some volunteers to deliver the Kourier. One couple have come forward to cover the Broadleaf, Orchid and Sapling area of Longacre, leaving the rest of the estate available for delivery. We also have a round in the Old Kempshott Lane area covering School Close, Whitebeam Close and Kempshott Grove. If you can help please give us a call on 01256 354282.
FOUND on our drive at 138 Coniston Road - a pair of bifocal glasses, these may have been dropped by someone delivering milk bottle tops to us. If you think they are yours please give us a ring or drop by to collect.

What does diversity mean to you? Diversity is perceived differently by everyone! (Eye of the beholder) Lots of men like to look well presented, (well-groomed, beards tamed, eyebrows and nails tidy, smell nice, etc. etc) so why is it not a readily available market? This would certainly bring in a lot of revenue for the stores. The whole Girl/ Boy and Man/ Woman title/ label frustrates me when I go shopping! Why can't we just have 'stuff' - clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, make-up, fragrances etc for everyone... Not labelled by sex. I get VERY annoyed when I go to most high-street shops because, when I go to the men's section (the smallest section of the shop - in most cases the child's section is bigger) and all the range for men are boring and dull - blacks, browns and greens. Yes, I get that some may like that, but... come on let's move forward a little! If I want to shop for something different, something that has a little life to it, I either have to shop in the woman's section (and get looked at) or I have to go online to shops like Boohoo and Asos. Having a broader range for men on the high-street would surely bring more revenue to the stores. Hight-street shops wonder why lot's of people are shopping online. Please give the ever-growing 'male shopping market' something to get excited about! Does it really matter (whether you agree with it or not) if a man/male is wearing sparkly shoes!? Let whoever have their own choice without the worry about everyone else. Live and let live. Nobody should be labelled or discriminated against it's not acceptable, especially in today's society, we have Male hairdressers, Male nurses, Male house husbands etc.

What does safeguarding mean, To protect the health and well being. To vulnerable adults and especially children, From abuse, harm and neglect, to live free to shield them. Here at Kempshott infant school we have a duty of care, To help our children learn and to be aware. With guidance we all work together, For we want our pupils to be safe this is our endeavour. As they develop into mature, confident and well-rounded citizens, With good core values this we envision. With learning being both memorable and fun, To give them memories that cannot be undone. We want them to be free thinkers and to achieve, To be independent and make good choices and to believe. To find their own solutions and achieve their goals, To think outside the box and to resolve. To develop the necessary skills and to be confident, To listen to have patience and be competent. We believe in our children profoundly, So let’s work together and help them to be outstanding. In a safe environment being supported, For in their future they shall be rewarded.
Ms M Kelson
A very happy New Year to all our Kempshott WI members. I can’t believe we are in a new decade and I, probably like so many of you, are wondering where the last year went, never mind the last ten. Still the shops have now cleared away their Christmas remnants, the bulbs are bravely pushing up through the soil and the lighter evenings are already appearing, at least on sunny days anyway. Meanwhile Kempshott WI is preparing for its new year. Our 2020 programme was ready for distribution at our January meeting and as usual there is a mixed offering of speakers and events, including a Hampton Court guide and costume maker speaking to us in February, a VE Day Bletchley Park tribute in June and a talk on the origins of the Basingstoke Canal later in the year. As a WI member you are offered eleven meetings a year, plus ten Social afternoons, visits to places of interest, walks and pub lunches plus quizzes and other activities. With over 6500 WIs in the UK catering for different ages and interests could your new year resolution be to come and join us at Kempshott, you would be made most welcome. We meet in Kempshott Village Hall usually the fourth Monday in the month at 2.30pm. Our February meeting is on the 24th. Please phone our President Mrs Barbara Hutton on 01256 460475 if you require more information.

The new practice is now known as Phillips Solicitors, incorporating Brain Chase Coles, creating a powerful regional law firm with true legal strength. Based at our Town Gate offices in London Street, Basingstoke, we believe that combining forces is a positive move that will enable us to adopt best working practices to benefit our clients. Our clients will be able to access a broad spectrum of legal expertise including commercial and residential property, corporate and commercial, litigation, family, wills and probate, estate planning, employment, insurance and education law. Howard Gardener, who was among the founders of Phillips Solicitors, said: "There is a natural and positive cultural fit to both firms which is why the idea of a merger felt right, right from the start. Our practice will now include 33 lawyers working across the full range of practice areas. Importantly, the increased scale of the combined firm offers broader choices for our clients." Jon Coles, who was a partner of Brain Chase Coles, said: "As a combined firm, we will now offer even greater strength and depth in our services to clients. We are looking forward to continuing to work with our existing clients and getting to know our new colleagues as we enter this next exciting stage in the evolution of our firm." Kempshott Wildlife, Green Space KEMPSHOTT WILDLIFE, GREEN SPACE Old Down & Beggarwood Wildlife Group Another year starts off with mild weather. Perhaps with climate change winter is shifting to February and March. Bird numbers on Old Down and Beggarwood are still pretty poor. Not sure if this is because of the weather or disturbance from nearby building works. However, the Rooks, Crows and Jackdaws appear to be coping with the building works as their numbers on the meadows remain constant. It does look as though there may be a few more nests in the high trees adjacent to Longacre despite the noise from the building works. Rooks and Crows are all glossy black and of a similar size, the noticeable difference between them being that the Rook has white around the base of the bill. The Jackdaw is slightly smaller with distinct grey around the black face.
Work parties: For Old Down, we meet outside Old Down Hall every Thursday 10-12 noon. But always check our website just in case there is a cancellation or change. At the moment no work parties are happening on Beggarwood as we do not have enough interest. If anyone is interested in volunteering or even perhaps leading a work party on Beggarwood then please contact the Group to discuss.
FUZZY DROVE CONSERVATION GROUP For details of working parties and other activities, find us on Facebook or at our website www.fuzzydrove.co.uk If you would just like more information about any work we do, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will be pleased to help.

It’s on the way out! After Christmas, you may have noticed small pieces of red and white warning tape tied to shrubs appearing all over the Meadow. These are being used to mark out scrub that is to be removed, mainly rose briar and the occasional hawthorn. If not kept under control, rose briar is dreadful stuff that spreads quickly. This means not just cutting it down but also digging out the roots as well. As this is hard work for our volunteers, we get Community Payback to this, and they love it! It's just the type of work they enjoy, cutting stuff down. At the end of each work session they can see where they have been and they get a sense of achievement of a job well done. More……………………………….
and AND Conservation News February CONSERVATION NEWS for FOR FEBRUARY Scrub clearance started at the end of November and a number of Community Payback sessions are booked into early March. One of our aims is to clear a block of grassland so that Basingstoke Council can cut the grass this coming spring. In the past when the grass was cut more frequently, small scrub growth was cut at the same time. This just stores up trouble for the future. Although the scrub gets cut down the roots remain and the scrub bounces back with more vigour in later years. In the last 10 years or so, the frequency of grass cutting has been reduced and so scrub has been allowed to flourish. If left, grassland will naturally be overtaken by scrub. If left long enough, this scrub will develop into clumps of hawthorn and oak with an understory of rose briar and bramble, eventually to become oak forest. This picture taken in May shows the range of scrub that will occur naturally if not kept under control. The hawthorn produces a nectar source for flying insects and will eventually provide nesting sites for birds. The shrub to the right of the hawthorn is the dreaded rose briar. The only resource this shrub provides is berries in autumn and winter. It provides little shelter and even the berries are not popular with birds as they usually remain on the shrub until spring. They only get eaten in very hard winters when all the other food has been exhausted.. Our long term aim has been to change the green desert we took over in the mid 2000s into a mosaic of habitats that would support a more diverse range of invertebrates, birds and even amphibians. To this end, some blocks of scrub have deliberately been allowed to build up as this provides a different habitat for birds and insects. New shrubs and small trees have also been planted to increase the diversity of our arboreal species. Walking over the site, we have noticed that some of the self-sown trees have grown to the point where birds have started using them for nesting. However, at some time in the near future some of these scrub blocks will need to be demolished and others encouraged. It is a balancing act to leave scrub to build up to the point where it's useful as habitat but not to leave it too long, otherwise trees develop which can become too well established to remove. Where rose briar is dug up the exposed bare soil presents ground disturbance, creating yet another micro-habitat which can be used by solitary bees and wasps. HOMELESS CHARITIES LAUNCH THE BIG BASINGSTOKE SLEEP-OUT
Julian House and the Camrose Centre Basingstoke are inviting people to sign up for a special challenge which also promises to be a highly memorable experience - The Big Basingstoke Sleep-Out. Sleep out for just one night under the stars, on Saturday 21st March 2020 in The War Memorial Park and make an incredible difference to those forced to sleep out every night. Julian House provides life changing support to over 1,000 people every year. They operate over 40 projects, accommodation sites and social enterprises across the South West. In Basingstoke the charity’s Assertive Outreach Team provide a real opportunity for people desperate to move away from rough sleeping. In addition the Community Activities Network offers a varied timetable of activities, drop in sessions and events which promote independence, well-being and social inclusion.
Sleep-Out The War Memorial Park, Basingstoke
Saturday 21st March 2020
Sleep out for just one night and help those who are forced to sleep out every night.
The Camrose Centre Basingstoke makes a real difference to homeless people's lives: a private place to wash and freshen up - something that most people take for granted. However for those who are sleeping on the streets the simple act of washing and using toilet facilities can be very difficult to access. The Centre offers a safe place for homeless people to feel good with wash kits and fresh towels supplied by staff Cathy Adcock, Area Funding Manager for Julian House “Of course, no-one is under any illusion that spending one cold night in War Memorial Park could possibly come close to the stark reality of being homeless and sleeping on the streets every night. People taking part in the Big Basingstoke Sleep-Out may be uncomfortable, however, the next morning they’ll be able to go home, have a warm bath, a cooked breakfast, chat to family and friends about their experience and catch up on lost sleep. The big difference for people who are forced to sleep rough is that they don’t have that option.” Both organisations are delighted to have Newbury Building Society on board as the main sponsor for the event. Lisa Wedge, is the Society’s Branch Manager in Basingstoke: "Homelessness in Basingstoke and surrounding areas is a real concern. As a mutual organisation which holds the community at its heart, we are proud to help Julian House and the Camrose Centre lead the charge in helping vulnerable people in the local area. Giving up one night may not eradicate the problem, but as a community we can unite as one voice and come together to spread awareness. By doing so, we start to chip away at a problem that is right on our doorstep. Employees of Newbury Building Society will be leaving the warmth of our beds on the 21 March 2020, and we hope many of our members will join us." The Big Basingstoke Sleep-Out is aimed at families, groups of friends and work colleagues, with no age limit for those taking part. Also welcome will be teams from Scout and Guide groups, organisations and companies, who can rally together to take on the challenge. Supporting the Sleep-Out gives members of the public the chance to empathise with those who are forced to sleep on the streets and raise sponsorship to help Julian House & The Camrose Centre support them: not just changing lives - often saving lives.
How to get involved: Eventbrite Sign up to the event for free at Eventbrite On-line, details can be found at www.bigbasingstokesleepout.co.uk Email To receive further information email Julian House - Events Fundraiser Rachel Avent on firstname.lastname@example.org

I’m in my sixties and would like an amicable divorce with my spouse, what are the issues I need to address? Answer Andrea Boulter - Clarke & Son replies: More and more married people over 60 are now choosing to divorce and go their separate ways instead of facing retirement together and getting divorced later in life tends to be a more amicable affair. For example, you probably won’t have the same complications younger couples face, like young children, uncertain finances or negative equity in the family home and therefore there probably won’t be a need for an expensive court room battle. Also, if you can agree a financial settlement between you, you’ll have the added benefit of not seeing your hard earned savings disappear in legal fees. Where to start When you’ve been married for a long time, the starting point, in legal terms, for the division of assets (savings, property, possessions, pensions etc.) is equality. At this point you may want to speak with a solicitor to discuss your options. At Clarke & Son we provide a free initial 30-minute meeting, so you can come in for a chat to find out more. Pensions Even if you haven’t reached pension age yet, your pension assets are likely to need special consideration when deciding how to split everything equally. Private pensions, occupational pensions, state pensions and additional state pensions will all need to be taken into account. A pension sharing order is popular in ‘silver’ divorces. This is where one partner gets a credit or top-up from the other’s pension fund to ensure you both get an equal pension income either now or when you reach retirement age. So, for example, if a husband is already in receipt of his pension, and has a younger wife, it is important to appreciate that she won’t usually be able to begin claiming an income from a pension fund until she’s 55. If the wife is 53 years old, this means any pension sharing order will not provide an income for her for a further two years. This is described as the ‘income gap’ and will be something your solicitor will be able to advise you on. Children and grandchildren Whilst your children may be grown up and even have flown the nest, it would be wrong to assume that they’re going to be as calm about your divorce as you and your partner are. Your separation is likely to be a big change for them and it could take a while for them to adjust to it, especially if they now have children of their own. If this is something which affects your family, then you may want to consider introducing a family therapist. Having someone who knows the situation and understands all the feelings involved could be a worthwhile step for everyone. Our top five tips for a ‘silver’ divorce 1. Consider an amicable approach to divorce. 2. Take independent legal advice as soon as you feel ready. Ensure your solicitor is someone you can relate to and feel comfortable with. 3. Consider family therapy to ensure the wider family emerges unscathed. 4. Take independent financial advice to ensure your money will work for you as hard as possible throughout retirement. 5. Look after yourself and your health. Divorce is a stressful process and you will need to invest in your health as well as your finances. If you have any questions regarding Divorce or Separation, please contact our team mail@ clarkeandson.co.uk or Tel: 01256 320 555. Do you have a legal query? Email email@example.com and the answer may be printed in the next edition of the Kempshott Kourier.
BASINGSTOKE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY www.bhsociety.btck.co.uk It seems strange writing about our December meeting knowing that by now you will all be looking forward to Spring and some better weather ahead – well, hopefully!
Our Christmas buffet is always a treat and it’s also a time when we like to invite a speaker that either has a story to tell or is from a local charity or some other group seeking to help others in the community. This year it was the turn of Rebecca Simpson from Tadley who came to tell us her story “From farm to fork”. When Becky moved to Tadley she needed a field for her horse and having found one was then offered access to others. Soon after, goats, pigs, turkeys all seemed to find their way to Becky’s fields. All was well while they were small and “cuddly” but as breeding was soon on the agenda thoughts rapidly turned to “what do we do with them”? Being vegetarian, this was a challenge to Becky but after a good deal of research she discovered that many of the issues involving allergies from eating meat lies with the methods of its processing. With the need to process their meat removed and with sales to just family and friends Becky was soon enjoying eating meat again. We did ask about her inevitable attachment to some of her animals and while there was a keen sense of responsibility towards them, once they went to the abattoir any form of sentimentality was soon forgotten. Our next meeting in Kempshott Village Hall will be on Monday February 17th at 7.30pm when Mike Read, a professional photographer, will be speaking on “Hampshire – Nature in Trust”. If you would like further details, please contact either: - Vida Sinden – Chairman – 01256 466281 or Philip Wraight – Vice Chairman - 01256 324185

APPEALING AGAINST A PARKING TICKET WHEN SOMEONE ELSE WAS DRIVING You might be sent a ticket in the post if someone parked where they shouldn’t have when they were driving your car. You should appeal if any of the reasons on this page apply to you, because you weren’t responsible for the car when it was parked. You might still be able to appeal if you lent your car to someone and they got a parking ticket – it depends on the type of ticket. Even if you can’t appeal, you can still ask the person who was driving to pay the ticket. If someone borrowed your car If your car was stolen or your licence plate was copied If you recently bought your car If you recently sold your car

HATCH WARREN RUNNERS 2019…it’s a wrap! Club members never fail to amaze with their achievements each year. It’s impossible to write about them all but here are some of the people that often fly under the radar…here goes! Victoria Williams, one of our truly valued and consistent run leaders achieved just under 1000 miles in 2019. However, probably her biggest achievement is that every week she leads a club run on a Monday and Wednesday evening and often on a Sunday too, where it isn’t unusual for up to 20 people to attend. This is an absolute testament to her inclusivity and supportive nature. Jodie Gibson one of our newer, but entirely dedicated run leaders, achieved 700 miles this year; totally smashing her 500 mile target. Her pace and running strength have improved so much this year. She supports others with a big smile, which is truly inspiring. Katy Allaway has taken the journey from non-runner to well over 1,100 miles in the last year, including training for and completing the London marathon. Ruth Mortlock completed our Couch to 5K course in May and then a few months later, completed a mega-half marathon (which is a term for between a half and full marathon distance). Three of our most modest and (quietly) supportive runners achieved some extraordinary mile totals in 2019 and PBs as a direct consequence of their personal commitment: Richard Heath (over 2,200 miles), Andy Brace (over 1,800 miles) and David Mason (over 1,900). Nicola Stewart, mother of two, striving to get back her fitness after having baby number two, found her running mojo and achieved PBs across every distance from a mile to a marathon. Paul Neale set the personal challenge of running 12 half marathon races in 12 months and then, because he completed this in just 4 months…took on a second challenge of running 26 half marathon races in 52 weeks…which he completed in just 42 weeks! New Year, New Challenges The new year has begun and so have new training plans for 2020. For some members this will be coming back from injury or illness and getting back out there. For others this will be entering races and accomplishing distances they have never run before or even, tackling a nemesis distance or race that hasn’t previously gone as planned! If running is part of your ‘getting fit’ resolution for 2020, we hope to host a Couch to 5K course in the Spring. Alternatively, there are several excellent Couch to 5K Apps or parkrun is a great place to start your running journey. If you’ve never been to a parkrun, it’s difficult to comprehend how welcoming it really is. It genuinely does cater for all abilities. You will never be the last person to finish as this is always a dedicated volunteer and many people choose to walk the entire distance each week. If you currently run regularly, or are able to run 5km already, you might consider joining Hatch Warren Runners in 2020. Please visit www.hwrunners. co.uk, our Facebook page or email email@example.com for more information.

We meet month, sh Mrs Barb
RIP WINDOWS 7 As some of you may be aware, as of January 14th, Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system is not longer
supported and is officially end-of-life. This means Microsoft will no longer provide important security fixes so what are your options. Windows 7 was released to the public in October 2009 and replaced the awful Windows Vista. Many people held out upgrading to Windows 7 as they were more than happy with the very successful Windows XP. Windows Vista was also a bit of a disaster as it took a long time to develop and performance and usability were VERY poor. Despite the release of Windows 8 in October 2012, very few people opted to upgrade because, like Vista, people hated the new Tiles start menu code named Metro. This was Microsoft’s attempt to make Windows 8 more “tablet friendly” but sadly it backfired, not just because of the Start menu but also the silly “hot spot” corners where you had to move your cursor to the top left to access certain menu options; not very intuitive. The lack of a decent migration path from Windows 7 is one the main reason people decided to stick with Window 7. To be fair, if you’re still on Windows 7 then you are not alone. As of December 2019, it’s estimated that 53% of businesses are still running Windows 7. What are my options Stay on Windows 7 – Whilst this is an option, it’s probably the worse option because Microsoft are not going to release any more security patches. Microsoft took the same policy with Windows XP until the WannCry virus crippled millions of computers, so they opted to release patches for Windows XP as well. It’s also important to know that they won’t be releasing new malware signatures for its Security Essentials software. Upgrade to Windows 10 – This is not as easy as it sounds because technically you can’t upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 – but more on that later. You also need to buy Windows 10 as the free period Microsoft offered has expired – but more on that later. The best option is to buy a new computer. Firstly, you existing Windows 7 PC is likely to be old and in need of additional upgrades, like the computer working RAM and a super-fast SSD where you store your files. This upgrade path is one I’ve used for my Business customers as many of the PCs had reasonable processors, but this is a rather technical process and beyond the scope of this article. Get a Chromebook – You’re probably wondering what a Chromebook is. This is a low powered laptop running an operating system made by Google. It’s an inexpensive solution for web browsing, email and social media, watching online video and casual office tasks using the Google Suite. It’s not targeted at power users but works as an acceptable option if you computing requirements are lightweight. Install a Linux Distribution Again, the first question is going to be “What is Linux?” and “What is a Linux Distribution?” Most people know about Microsoft Windows and Apple’s operating system OSX but Linux is very popular operating system that has more than 50% of operating systems installed globally. Linux runs on so many devices and is the basis for Android phones as well as the Chromebook above. It also runs on other devices like your WiFi/internet Router and many television sets. The difference with Linux is that it is open source so anyone can add to it, unlike the very control and closed environments the Apple and Microsoft operate in. This has led to many difference versions of Linux as there are 100s of them and most are based on other popular distros. The two worth looking are at Linux Mint (https://linuxmint. com/ ) and Zorin OS (https://zorinos.com/). Windows 10 I mentioned earlier than you can’t upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and that if you did, you’d have to pay. Well it seems that you can still get Microsoft Windows 10 for free providing you have a valid Windows 7 License key. These is normally found on the case of the PC or the underside of the laptop and will have 5 blocks of 5 characters like this “XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.” You may need this key when upgrading. Before you start any of this process MAKE A BACKUP OF ALL YOUR DATA. I cannot stress enough how important this is because upgrades of this magnitude can and normally do go wrong. Next you need to download the Windows 10 from Microsoft. Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/ windows10 and click on the “Download tool now” option. When it’s finished you should be able to run the tool and then select “Upgrade this PC now” and click “Next”. Then choose “Keep personal files and apps” and click “Install”. If your upgrade has completed successfully check your licence is activated by opening: Settings > Update & Security > Activation. After the ordeal Irrespective of which path you take I really would recommend doing something rather than nothing. One reason I hear for not moving Windows 10 is the change. People don’t like the idea of having to learn a new system. I understand this but there are many ways to make Windows 10 more usable, like tidying the Start Menu, pinning applications to the Task Bar and using the secret start menu by pressing the Windows Key + X. Good bye Windows 7, hello Windows 10.

They had been with us for nine years and we are sad to see them go. Many exciting 10:00 Service of the Word things have happened in the church and community under their leadership.
For example- we have started a messy church (very informal craft, food, a short celebration and lots of fun for families of all ages 2.30pm -5pm every third Saturday); we have started doing the fabulous ‘Open the Book’ assemblies for the Y4’s in the junior school; started Saturday @ Saint Mark’s (2nd Saturday of the month from 9:30am) which is an informal chance to learn such things as your ancestry, try flower arranging go for walks or bike rides round Kempshott or find out about various things to do with IT or further education. In the church’s year, the weeks just gone still form part of the ‘Easter Season’. It was a time of transition and change for Jesus’ disciples too. They had travelled around the country with Jesus, listening to him teach and preach, watching him do miracles and healings. But they hadn’t quite understood ‘what he was really about.’
Kempshott Methodist Church On Easter Sunday and on many occasions after that they met the risen Lord Jesus, and during this time,
before He ascended to heaven, they began to understand all that He was teaching and explaining to them Kempshott Lane about God and about how much He loves each and every one of us. They finally did begin to comprehend www.basingstokereadingmethodists.uk/churches/kempshott ‘what He was really about.’ Many of what are called resurrection appearances in the Bible involve eating. This is important because it tells us that the risen Jesus had a real physical body -he wasn’t some kind of ghostly apparition.
Sunday morning worship at 10.30
Often the disciples didn’t immediately recognize Jesus-‘he was the same but different.’ The best analogy of this is when maybe you have had your hair done or get new glasses. Often people comment that there is ‘something a bit different about you’ but they cannot quite place their finger on it.
2 February 9 February
Morning worship and Holy Communion During this transition period, Jesus appeared to his disciples in pairs, groups and once to 500 people in one Led by Revd Audrey Browne go. This tells us that Jesus’ resurrection appearances couldn’t have been a hallucination. It is unlikely that 2 or 3 people, let alone 500 would have had the same hallucination!

Transition is unsettling and often make us feel ill at ease - It was for the disciples, it is for us at St. Mark’s and it may well be for you. We wonder, “What we’ll do?” and “How we will manage?” Jesus promised to send his disciples a ‘helper’, which we call the Holy Spirit, to guide & support them and enable them to manage and find a way through.
