Outstanding and Excellent Tasmanian Residents Achiever Scholarships Scholarships

Tasmanian Freight Logistics Council The Tasmanian Freight Logistics Council supports improvements in Tasmania’s freight chains by working jointly with service providers and shippers. Their focus is on the logistics aspects of moving goods, into and out of Tasmania. The Tasmanian Freight Logistics Council is a proud sponsor of a scholarship offered for a Tasmanian resident who will commence year two business studies at AMC in 2010 BBus (Maritime and Logistics Management).

The AMC Outstanding and Excellent Achiever Scholarships are open to all areas of study at the AMC. They are our flagship scholarship programs. The scholarships are very generous and aimed at motivating you to do well at school and therefore making your move to AMC a rewarding one.

Value: $5,000

Outstanding Achiever Scholarship If you do very well at school, AMC will reward you! This scholarship package includes accommodation and meals for your first year of study at AMC, plus $1,000 per semester cash benefit for education expenses.

Scholarships open to Tasmanian students only.

The Tasports scholarship is aimed at encouraging students to study in the transport and logistics sector.

Value: $2,500 per annum

Criteria: Demonstrated outstanding performance in secondary school studies. Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) 95+ (OP1, OP2, OP3).

This scholarship is provided from the estate of the late Bruce Wall, which supports a number of Tasmanian youth projects.

Excellent Achiever

TASSAL Tasmania Scholarship

Are you an excellent achiever? If yes, AMC will also reward you. This scholarship package includes accommodation and meals.

Available to a Tasmanian student who has completed the first year of a combined degree which includes Aquaculture.

Value: $7,500 (approximately)

Willard Estate Logistics Scholarship Willard Estate Logistics is an independent private international freight logistics company based in Tasmania who is proud to sponsor a Tasmanian student commencing a Business degree at AMC in 2011 Value: $1,000 Number: 1 Duration: 1 year Criteria: High ATAR score and demonstrated leadership potential, studying in BBus (MLM). Must be a Tasmanian resident.

SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED TO WOMEN IN ENGINEERING The National Centre for Maritime Engineering & Hydrodynamics will be offering scholarships in 2011 to encourage women to participate in maritime engineering programmes.

Criteria: Australian Citizen / Tasmanian resident, demonstrated interest in industry, leadership potential, good academic record in 1st year of study in undergraduate degree.

BAE Systems Australia Pty Ltd Scholarship BAE Systems Australia Pty Ltd, a major ship designer and builder in the Asia Pacific region sponsors this scholarship for a final year student. Value: $2,000

The AMC’s focus on sound environmental practices has been boosted thanks to two new scholarships from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). These awards recognise AMSA’s role in promoting safety and protecting the marine environment, as set out in the National Plan to Combat Pollution of the Sea by Oil and other Noxious and Hazardous Substances, and as a means of supporting the development of skills in the maritime industry.

EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT FUND SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

The two awards will go to one undergraduate and one postgraduate student.

The Society for Underwater Technology (SUT), will offer annual scholarship awards for either undergraduate or postgraduate students who can demonstrate a clear interest in pursuing a career in a relevant marine related area.

Benefits a student studying either a Bachelor of Applied Science (Maritime Operations), a Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Engineering) or a Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Environment) Honours. All of these degrees contain a research component and a condition of the award is that the student undertakes this in a subject of interest to AMSA.

Huon Aquaculture Scholarship The scholarships aim to provide a cash benefit, potential paid work experience and possible graduate position with Huon Aquaculture.

Furness Withy (Australia) Pty Ltd The scholarship aims to provide an opportunity to a prospective student OR current student who may otherwise have difficulty in pursuing a tertiary qualification on campus at the AMC and who has a keen interest in commercial shipping.

Value: $3,000 plus paid work experience. Number: 2 Duration: 1 year with the possibility of 1 year extension. Criteria: Students studying the aquaculture major in their degree and who have demonstrated excellence in study in Year 1

Value: $2,000

Awarded to a candidate in the Masters of Maritime Studies (Maritime Safety). The Master of Maritime Studies (Maritime Safety) is a new program commencing in Semester 2, 2010.

Defence Materiel Organisation

The National Centre for Marine Conservation and Resource Sustainability offers scholarships to assist students from remote and rural areas to complete a Marine Environment degree majoring in either Marine Conservation, Fisheries Management, or Aquaculture.

The scholarship is offered by Skretting, international manufacturers of aquaculture feeds.

Criteria: Demonstrated interest in commercial shipping and excellent academic study records including Tertiary Entrance Score. Must possess good leadership potential. Eligible students must be entering or be a current student in BAppSc (MTM) or BBus (MLM).

Number: 1 Duration: 1 year Criteria: Available to third year students with an aquaculture major in their degree.

Australian Mariners Welfare Society

Duration: 1.5 years

Bruce Wall Estate – Honours Scholarship

Value: $1000 per semester / pro rata part-time

These scholarships are provided from the estate of the late Bruce Wall, which supports a number of Tasmanian youth projects.

AMWS is a non-profit organisation that provides assistance to Missions to Seafarers, Stella Maris and other similar bodies. The AMWS scholarships enable the children of seafarers and ex-seafarers including professional fishermen of moderate or less than moderate means to undertake study in relevant sea-going disciplines at AMC.

Value: $5,000

Value: No fixed value

Criteria: The Master of Maritime Studies (Maritime Safety) degree program includes a research dissertation component; a condition of the award is that the recipient works in collaboration with AMSA on a relevant research dissertation.

STUDENT INCOME SUPPORT

The scholarship is awarded to commemorate the service and sacrifices of the members of the Aust Mercantile Marine during World War I and II.

The new Relocation Scholarship will be paid to eligible dependent Youth Allowance and ABSTUDY (Living Allowance) customers to help with the costs of living away from home to study.

Value: $2,500 Number: 2 Criteria: Merit-based, VET level studies Master Class 4, Master Class 5 or Integrated Rating course.

TEEKAY SHIPPING (AUSTRALIA) Pty Ltd Scholarship for new seafarer degree in BAppSci (Maritime Operations) will be very competitive. It is offered to both on campus and off campus students in both full time and part time studies. (Scholarship will be paid on pro rata basis for part time studies) Seafarers holding Class 1 or 2 Certificate of Competency or who hold an Advanced Diploma in relevant subject area would be considered for this new top up degree. Value: $2,500 Number: 1 Duration: 1 year (or pro rate part time studies) Criteria: Australian Citizen, demonstrated excellence in prior studies, sound leadership potential, brief statement on long term goals.

RELOCATION SCHOLARSHIP To qualify for this payment, you must:

• be studying full-time in an approved scholarship course, and

• be in receipt of ABSTUDY Living Allowance or Youth Allowance as a full-time student, and

• be a dependent person who has to live away from home to study, or

• be assessed as independent under specific scholarship independence criteria.

You won’t be eligible for this scholarship if:

• you also receive, or qualify for, a Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship or a Relocation Scholarship paid by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs

• you do not continue full-time study for at least 35 days after qualifying for the scholarship

• there are less than 35 days left in the year

• you have participated in the ABSTUDY Residential Costs Option in the current study year.

You do not need to make a new claim to receive these scholarships. If you are eligible and commenced study in your current course after 31 December 2009 Centrelink will automatically pay you a scholarship payment during April 2010. You will not need to do anything. If you are eligible and commenced study in your current course prior to 1 January 2010 you will receive a letter in early April which you will need to respond to. You can then be assessed for a scholarship payment. You can respond to this letter via Online Services[2].

The Relocation Scholarship provides students with a lump sum payment of $1,000 in each year of study. There is one exception - students who are in their 1st year of eligibility (see below) will receive a lump sum payment of $4,000 in that 1st year. The rate of Relocation Scholarship will be indexed each year. A student is deemed to be in the 1st year of eligibility:

• in the 1st year of the approved scholarship course, or

• in a 2nd or subsequent year of study if they have met the scholarship qualification within the previous 6 months.

Note: You will only receive the $1,000 scholarship rate of payment if you have previously received a Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship, or previously received a payment of the initial $4,000 Relocation Scholarship rate from Centrelink or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

Approved scholarship course An approved scholarship course is an accredited higher education course or preparatory course that is undertaken at a higher education institution.

The specific independence criteria that qualify for a Relocation Scholarship are:

• unreasonable to live at home

• orphan

• parents cannot exercise responsibility

• refugee (Youth Allowance only)

• State care (Youth Allowance only) both supported and unsupported

• specially disadvantaged (safety net criteria)

• have (or have had) a dependent child

• c urrently have care or custody of another person’s child (ABSTUDY only)

• t ribal initiation (ABSTUDY only).

Note: If you are assessed as independent on the basis of meeting the age requirements[1], you can not be assessed as independent under any other criterion.

STUDENT INCOME SUPPORT

the student start-up SCHOLARSHIP If you are a full-time student undertaking a qualifying course and are receiving Youth Allowance, Austudy or ABSTUDY Living Allowance, you will receive the Student Start-up Scholarship. You’ll receive this scholarship at the beginning of each semester to help with the up-front costs of studying, such as textbooks and specialised equipment. You’ll receive the full amount of the Start-up Scholarship, even if you’re not on the maximum payment rate from Centrelink. In 2010, the Student Start-up Scholarship will be $650 for each 6 months of eligible study. This amount will then increase to $1,064 for each 6 months of eligible study in 2011 and will be indexed each year.

To be eligible for this payment you must be

• s tudying full-time in an approved scholarship course • r eceiving ABSTUDY Living Allowance, Austudy or Youth Allowance as a full-time student.

You won’t get this scholarship if

• you also receive, or qualify for, a Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship or a

• you do not continue full-time study for at least 35 days after qualifying for the
