NOVALAND RESORT REFURBISHMENT WORK IN PRACTICE

Description
The resort sits close to the popular Da Lat Railway Station. The city of Da Lat is very popular among local tourists, and is often visited by young couples and families. Our objective was to renovate an existing set of villas, an entrance lobby, and a restaurant. A challenging aspect of this project was that each villa was unique, so although every design had to be different, they had to be clearly linked with the nearby buildings. This in turn effect
ed the interior, and each room in each villa had to have it’s own unique layout, all while in adhering to the hotel’s guidelines for room standards. Both the interior design as well as the exterior design needed to change to fit into the ‘French romantic’ theme that the client had requested.

Description
I worked on the interior design of the gym and main building, which included the hotel lobby and restaurant. For this project, bold French designs were referenced to create a striking sense of arrival for visitors. I investigated different material choices and tested how they would fit in the space. It was essential to have a visual representation of the space for both the clients and myself to understand how the final product would look. I liaised with a professional 3D renderer to ensure that everything worked together and any small details were finalized, finding appropriate furniture and finishes to make the spaces work. Colored floor plans and material boards were also created to give the client an impression of the finished space.

SWISSOTEL WORK IN PRACTICE

Description
Swissotel’s project is a mixed use development located in Hanoi. The client wanted our team to take a look at the original proposal done by another practice and update and improve the work. We considered the use of space and what layout would benefit the client the most, and also created spaces that people would be drawn to. Swissotel is a luxury hotel brand based in Switzerland, so it was integral that it played a major role in the updated design. The client also wanted residences, office space, and retail on the lower ground floor of the development.

SUNSET BAR WORK IN PRACTICE
Description
Sunset Bar is set on a large resort on Phu Quoc Island. The adjacent pool links the ocean on both sides of the island. Currently the west side of this pool is less used as there is very little for guests to do here. The client wanted a bar & restaurant for visitors to enjoy the sunset views and give the area a new lease of life. It was important that the space linked closely with the surrounding area, but still had indoor areas for guests to enjoy the scenery away from rain and intense midday heat. Another constraint was the consideration of how the building would impact the view and privacy of the surrounding villas, so it was important to model the space in context of the site.

Hiện tại khu vực này chỉ có thể đi bộ, dọc theo hai bên hồ bơi. Chúng tôi được biết một tuyến đường đã được quy hoạch cho xe đẩy do khách sạn vận hành, và sẽ được xây dựng vào năm tới dọc theo bãi biển, kết nối trực tiếp với địa điểm của Sunset Bar.
Mặc dù dự án nằm trên vùng đất thấp - gần như ở mực nước biển, một trong những điểm nổi bật của khu đất là vách đá cao khoảng 8 m ở phía Tây, trên đỉnh là dãy biệt thự hướng ra biển. Về phía Đông, dãy biệt thự thấp tầng được trải dọc hướng biển.

Pullman Hotel is a 5 star hotel situated in Hanoi. The client wanted to refurbish 4 floors that had previously served as offices into new rooms. Focusing on the interior design, I worked on the mock up rooms and tender design stage. I finalized the technical details such as lighting, sockets, switches, material choices, and furniture design. I also had the opportunity to visit the factory where the furniture was being made for the mock up room. I ensured the furniture matched the detailed drawings we had produced in addition to meeting quality expectations. Before the rest of the construc tion could start, I had to respond to comments made on the mock up rooms to ensure that all parties were happy to move forwards on the project. Ad ditionally, the mock up rooms confirmed the final cost of each room was higher than what had been allocated, therefore my role was to find and adjust items to fit the client’s budget.

Description
The Spirit of Saigon is a mixed use development in the heart of Saigon, opposite the historic Ben Thanh market. It comprises branded residential, hotel, retail, and office with connections to the adjacent metro station. B+H’s role was as executive architect, coordinating with the various disciplines and ensuring the building was properly documented and prepared for authority submissions. My personal role in this project was coordinating the development of the BOH areas, including technical rooms, parking, and retail. I was responsible for the basement and podium packages of work, including GA plans, detail plans, RCPs, and finishes.

GRANTHAM HOSPITAL WORK IN PRACTICE

Description
Grantham Hospital was first established in 1957 and serves the residents of the Central, Western, and Southern districts of Hong Kong. The existing hospital will be demolished and redeveloped in two phases over a span of 12 years. As well as focusing on technological updates, the hospital also expects to be revamped as an academic ambulatory care center where it will focus on cancer services, integrating clinical services, teaching, and research. Working on the highly detailed interior design tender package, the work was mainly focused on furniture, specialized equipment and finishes in the building. As the project had many specialists spread across multiple countries, it was important to ensure all teams were liaising with one another and communicating efficiently.

NORTH LANE WORK IN PRACTICE

North Lane is an office refurbishment for a local business in Leeds. The ground floor is proposed to be updated and reconfigured. The first floor currently comprises two residential units that are let out by the business. The intention is to open up the space and expand the downstairs business into the upstairs of the building, creating a spacious and inviting space for both clients and staff. The space will allow for extra amenities, an outdoor terrace, meeting pods, additional desk space, and private offices. My role was to update plans following comments from the client and create a pre-application to discuss with the planning authority if the scheme was viable. As the site sits in a prime position in Headingley Conservation Area, the impact on the surrounding area was carefully examined.

EARLY YEARS REFURBISHMENT WORK IN PRACTICE

Description
This early years refurbishment developed from the idea of a space that two different groups of students could use at once - instead of two cramped classrooms, the students would share resources and have one open, engaging space to use instead. Whilst most of the space needed to be left open to allow teachers the flexibility to change the space for different activities, the cloakroom space was one area that would still need to remain somewhat enclosed. The proposed structure allows students to playfully interact with the space, as well as allowing teachers to keep a sight line throughout the area for safety and supervision. As a key designer, I managed the project and liaised between subcontractors. The main challenge on this project was its time-sensitive nature, as the project was scheduled to be complete before the students returned from their 6 week break.

DARLEY MILL REFURBISHMENT & NEW BUILD WORK IN PRACTICE

Description
Darley Mill is a historical site that sits in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The 17th century mill is a Grade II listed property with much of the mechanical equipment still in situ. It was previously functioning as a retail space. The proposal saw the change of use to residential, and the property was split into several apartments and attached houses. Additionally, 15 more residential new builds were to be included in the project. The new builds’ overall design was consistent with the area and mill, built in local stone and with details taken from the existing mill.

The Grove is a refurbishment project that lies in the heart of the historic town of Ilkley, England. The site is part of the Ilkley Conservation Area, and therefore great care was taken to ensure exterior changes were kept to a minimum. The existing building was a mix of retail and offices. The refurbishment proposed to change the use of the upper and basement levels of the building to residential, with an access lobby on the ground floor. A challenging aspect of this project was that the office on the ground floor was vacating the building for one week. This meant in that time frame we had to ensure that all work that would effect this space (including passing through this space) was complete. A separate set of drawings was produced for each phase to clearly detail the work that to be carried out.

PARK AVENUE DEMOLITION & NEW BUILD WORK IN PRACTICE

Park Avenue is a self-build property that sits in the residential area of Leeds, England. The existing site comprises a detached bungalow and garage that sits on a steep hill that slopes down from the main road. The proposal was to demolish the existing building and in it’s footprints build a multi-storey home. A challenging aspect of this project was the steep levels of the site- it was important that the lowest drainage level would meet the main wastewater collection system with no pump, whilst also trying to keep the level of the property as low as possible to minimize the impact of the new property on the street and neighboring buildings.

WALLTOWN QUARRY VISITOR CENTER ACADEMIC PROJECT

Description
Walltown Quarry Visitor Centre sits in the Northumberland National Park and lies along Hadrian’s Wall as well as National Trails. The center allows people to explore and understand the rich history and changes of the site. Exhibition spaces provide places for old machinery and tools to be displayed. Workshops, classrooms and lecture theaters are areas used to teach old skills, and allow people to develop their understanding of quarrying, stone masonry, and the site.

Drawing from the site helps to create ideas and concepts. It often highlights aspects that I find particularly interesting about the site. The drawing helped develop an interest in the form and texture of the crags and in particular the damage that was created from the quarry. I found how the crags would have sat if they had not been mined and mapped out some basic information of the site. I started to look at how this would be incorporated into the proposed structures, and how the building would reflect the changes to the area.

DURHAM LIBRARY ACADEMIC PROJECT

Durham, England
The music library is located in Durham which sits in the North East of England. Durham boasts historic buildings, including Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle, which are not only recognizable attractions but also form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site sits adjacent to the River Wear which flows through the city and forms an incised meander which encloses the center on three sides. This, combined with the hilly area around the city, has meant that there is little space to grow outwards. The site placement heavily impacted the design of the project; large windows and terraces facing the river allow visitors to experience the tranquility of the peaceful area. Smaller windows facing the nearby buildings are slipped between cladding to allow natural light into darker areas of the building, whilst keeping the space private.

This English country home sits in a quaint village that dates back to 1458. The idea for this project centered around mixing a modern design with something that is in keeping with the rest of the village. The north-facing stone facade allows a grand entrance that runs in line with the rest of the village’s material palette, whereas the contemporary south-facing side allows open living spaces that bring vast amounts of natural light into the property.
