philosophy of design As stated by a U.S President: Making your mark on the world is hard. If it were easy, everybody would do it. But it's not. It takes patience, it takes commitment, and it comes with plenty of failure along the way. The real test is not whether you avoid this failure, because you won't. It's whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction, or whether you learn from it; whether you choose to persevere.** After three years of attending interior design classes, I have learned thus far that it is not always as simple and making mistakes or failing are inevitable. How I choose to embrace any shortcomings, however, make all the difference. I have now accepted this notion and even though it is easier said than done, my overall determination and motivation is difficult to surpass. I choose to persevere and practice what I have an affinity for—interior design. Through my designs, I hope to make my mark on the world by implementing creative and attractive spaces to further entice human emotional responses of comfort and well-being within a space. New design projects involve new challenges, which I approach with enthusiasm and unrelenting fervor before I explore different problem solving options and intensive research. My completed class projects display precision and neatness to viewers which is vital in communicating my thoughts and design clearly and effectively. My class projects also demonstrate my knowledge in effectively utilizing Autodesk Revit Architecture as well as producing realistic renderings both manually and using computer based software. Creative design solutions are also exhibited to not only fit the norm of commercial code instruction but also those of the Texas Accessibility Standards to further accommodate our aging population. Class projects, even though they are not at a professional level, are constant reminders of why I have an affinity for design. They have exposed me to the type of work done in the interior design career while also educating me on the overall profession and what it entails. As an emerging professional in this field, I have been pushed to think even more critically, reflectively, and creatively than what I thought imaginable. Each day I still continue to learn and absorb new and upcoming information that further expands my knowledge and motivation to overcome new challenges in design. By creating designs that contribute to the overall safety, health, and general well-being of the public, I can make a difference in our society today where not even failure can hinder me from doing what I love to do. As previously stated, it is about learning from our failures and choosing whether or not to persevere in making our mark on the world. **quote does not reflect Amber Heeter’s political views, opinions, or party affiliation

commercial office design project brief client Two Japanese Female Office Executives design problem To create an exciting, contemporary, elegant private office environment for two executives, male or female, of a culture other than your own. Additional spaces required are one ADA restroom, a reception area, a workroom/break room, an accounting office, and a conference room. Basic furniture requirements are needed for all the areas in the client space. Offices should include an executive desk, credenza, executive chair, bookcase(s), and two guest chairs. Furnishings may be added to complete the design concept. Cultural research should guide the selection of appropriate finishes, accessories, and motifs. time to complete 12 weeks

solution The inspiring Japanese executive office fulfills the female client’s preference for a comfortable and functional office. Neutral colors within the space create a peaceful and relaxing environment while contrasting hues of red add character and interest. The clerestory windows and central Zen garden, emphasized by bamboo shades, add a sense of space, view and admit natural light to illuminate the office. The dark mahogany floor, cream colored walls, and traditional ornamentation of the Japanese culture enhance the office’s simplistic and minimalist style. Textural contrast is evident in the soft upholstery and coarse natural fiber mat maintaining a sense of balance of opposites through the use of opposing colors and textures provides a serene yet contemporary work space.

Incorporate creativity in the development of a functional, safe, but stimulating environment while accentuating the positive. time to complete 16 weeks solution The Tuscan Villa was designed with the residents’ needs and well-being in mind. Inspired by the Tuscan landscapes, warm tones are incorporated throughout the facility with accents of rich colors to serve as subtle wayfinding tools. The use of low walls that allow view into other social gathering areas helps residents orient themselves in the public spaces. The ease of viewing encourages residents to feel welcomed and safe in their surroundings. Large windows used in the sunroom, wellness center, and chapel serve as a visual passageway to the outdoors, bringing nature and the tranquil greenery indoors. The grand atrium located in the great room reaches up through the second floor and is crowned with a large skylight that provides an appropriate amount of natural lighting for residents. Moving into the private residential wings, small alcoves are implemented to provide a resting place or social area. The apartments were designed with concern for accessibility and comfort of the residents. With one bedroom and studio apartment designs to suit any style or need, the apartments evoke a sense of home and allow the residents to feel at ease during the difficult transition from independent living to assisted living.

Magritte master copy-“daughter of man”

project brief

objective Pick a piece by Surrealist artist, Rene Magritte and using only your own photographs, create a copy of the piece. Use Adobe Photoshop tools to crop and mesh photographs together for realism. time to complete 1 week solution Inspired by Rene Magritte’s Son of Man painting I created a print entitled Daughter of Man using five different photographs shot from my digital camera. The photos that make up this composition are as follows: my younger sister, an apple, a brick hedge, lake Nacogdoches, and a photograph of the sky. Using Adobe Photoshop, the five photos were merged, cropped, re-colored slightly, and further edited for realism. A paper-textured overlay was then placed over the composition with a light opacity for a more dramatic effect.

Surrealism study larger than life project brief

objective Using only your own photographs, create a composition in which a smaller object is scaled larger than average and is placed in a normal setting. Use Adobe Photoshop to enable shadows and reflections for realism. time to complete 1 week solution This composition is made up of two different photos shot with my digital camera. The first is a photo of an empty parking space in downtown Nacogdoches and the second is of my wireless mouse I use with my laptop. Various photographs of the mouse were taken until the appropriate angle was achieved to look as if the mouse was also “parked at the same angle as the other vehicles in the photograph. Using Adobe Photoshop, the two photos were merged and underwent further editing for realism.
