FOREWORD MY PORTFOLIO

Hello! My name is Amber de Vrede and this is my portfolio. I am a student in architecture at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. In this portfolio you can find work I made as an architecture student. With this portfolio I want to show you what I am able to create in architecture but I also want to show you how I have developed my architectural designing skills during the years. Therefore, I will show you my first project, when only drawing by hand was allowed, but also my more recent work which shows what I am able to create now. Without any experience in architectural designing, I started this project on the first day of my bachelor study in architecture at Delft University of Technology. The assignment was to design a family house and artist studio in one, with a footprint which would not exceed 150 quare meters. We also had to design the urban plan around it, which gives place to ten houses of the same size. The concept of both the urban plan and the house is the polder. The reason for this concept is because the house is situated in a polder field in the Netherlands. Typical for the polders are the straight lines, which can be found back in the design in the form of a very strict orthogonal grid. Another important apsect of the polder which can be seen in the design is water. The house seems prepared for possible floodings while the whole house is built on little columns. Apart from that the house and garden are surrounded by ditches. The house has two different types of facades. The facades positioned to the public are closed and the facades positioned to the private garden are open. This way the house is very private and makes good use of the sunshine.

This project was the first project in which I worked on an architectural design together with a group of students. The team consisted out of four students and every student had their own speciality. My speciality was the design of the facade of the building. The building consists out of two main volumes connected to each other by a route with a transparant appearance. The facades of the two volumes are opposites of each other. The first volume shows softness, lightness and openess with its facade by making the facade out of wood and glass. In this volume the university library and study places are located. The amount of glass in the facade increases by every floor level. This way, there is a nice connection with the outside world without being distracted too much by what is happening outside on the ground level. The second volume gives place to a big lecture. This volume is hard, dark and closed, which fits to it function of a lecture hall. Daylight is not very welcome when someone gives a presentation and by keeping much light out of the lecture hall, the attention of the students will stay on the lecture that is given. The routing connects the two masses but also connects the new building to the existing architecture faculty of the Technical University of Delft, which is located next to the new building. Furthermore, the routing creates a nice place on the upper level of the library, where one could enjoy the view to the 12 square that is created in front of the building.

CREËREN VAN AANGENAME BUITENRUIMTE a. Vorm van gebouw zorgt voor de vorming van een plein dat afgesloten is van de drukke weg b. Het plein wordt geanimeerd om het aanlokkelijk te maken voor bezoekers c. De buitenruimte bestaat uit verschillende sferen om het ontstaan van een onaangenaam groot plein te vermijden i. De sferen lopen over van groen naar verhard richting de ingang van het gebouw ii. De verschillende sferen zijn met elkaar verbonden door middel van een constante factor, een route, om versnippering te voorkomen ENTREE HERKENBAAR MAKEN a. Entree is naar achter geplaatst zodat het gebouw je bij aankomst omarmt, zo wordt de overgang tussen binnen en buiten wordt kleiner b. Er is een grote trap richting de entree om de entree te benadrukken c. De indeling van het maaiveld leidt je naar de entree GEEN AUTO’S IN HET ZICHT a. Het plein is bedoeld voor fietsers en voetgangers i. Door middel van verschil in de breedte van paden op het plein is duidelijk waar je kunt fietsen en waar je hoort te lopen B

Bouwkunde heeft momenteel weinig buitenruimte en de buitenruimte die er is, zijn veel studenten niet tevreden over, dus dit moet verbeterd worden. Om een plein interessant te maken en bezoekers te trekken is er animatie nodig.

Er wordt een overgang gevormd vanaf het park achter Bouwkunde waar veel bomen en groen is, richting de ingang van het nieuwe gebouw waar het plein volledig verhard is. De route van paden voor voetgangers en fietsens over het plein heen zorgt dat het hele plein een geheel wordt.

Er is gebruik gemaakt van verschillende elementen. Er worden hoekige bakken geplaatst van steen. Deze functioneren als bankjes en als afbakeningen van de verschillende sferen. De bakken zijn gevuld met bomen en gras, water of verharde zitplaatsen. De bakken bieden zo voor iedereen wat interessants, het is maar net waar je behoefte aan hebt. Tussen de bakken loopt een route, die voor fietsers breder is dan voor lopende gebruikers. Zo wordt direct duidelijk waar je met je fiets mag komen en waar niet. Verder zijn er extra fietsenstallingen geplaatst voor de extra gebruikers die het nieuwe gebouw zal aantrekken. 12.5

Technische omschrijving De gevel die wordt berekend is de houten vliesgevel op de eerste verdieping van de bibliotheek. Op deze verdieping zijn de ramen 387.5 mm hoog en 210 mm breed. Er is gekozen voor de houten vliesgevel THEMR+ H-I van RAICO Bautechnik GmbH. Deze vliesgevel heeft met driedubbelglas een U-waarde van 0.81 W/(m²K) en biedt daarmee een goede isolerende werking. Het stijl- en regelwerk van de vliesgevel heeft telkens een breedte van 50 mm. Deze houten vliesgevel steekt 50 mm naar buiten en 100 mm naar binnen. Verder wordt er driedubbel glas toegepast met een totale dikte van 36 mm. Ook bevindt zich in de vliesgevel het systeem (bestaande uit profielen, accessoires (zoals schroeven) en rubbers) tussen de ramen dat als koudbebrugvoorkoming tussen binnen en buiten dient. Het oppervlakte aan glas kan berekend worden als 1m2 aangezien dit vrijwel het gehele oppervlakte van de gevel beslaat. De strekkende meter van het stijl- en regelwerk is 5.6 m.

HOUSING FOR ELDERLY

For my minor I went to study for one semester at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. The last half of the semester I worked on this project about health care architecture. The assignment was to design an apartment building for elderly people in Gothenburg. The thought behind this project is not to make an apartment building only for elderly people, but to make a place where people of all ages can live. Elderly people will live in the same environment as, for example, families with kids. This way, elderly people will feel that they are still part of the society. Furthermore, this will result in a living environment where people of all ages will help and look after each other, which results in good social sustainability. The apartment building will be added to an existing U-form building resulting in a closed urban block with a courtyard in the middle. This courtyard may be used by the inhabitants of both the existing and the new building. In the courtyard there will be facilities suited for all ages, like a playground and kitchen gardens. There are different levels of privacy present in the building. Some facilities will be used by the public, some by the three new apartment buildings, some by just one of the new apartment buildings and some facilities are private. Apart from the fact that all apartments are designed to be used by someone in a wheelchair, some apartments can be joined together or make use of an extra room witch 16 can be switched between apartments. This increases the flexibility of the design.

This project lasted only two weeks and was therefore very intense. The assignment of the project was to make a new urban plan for the Merwe-Vierhavens, a harbour, in Rotterdam. The harbour is not going to be used in the future for harbour activities because Rotterdam moves all the activities further to the sea. To prevent the old harbour from being deserted, a new urban plan has to be made for the area. During the project, I worked in a team of ten students and every student had another function. My function for this project was the function of urban designer. This was one of the most intense but also most interesting roles of the team and therefore I had to discuss a lot with all the other team members. The idea behind the urban plan is to keep the soul of the harbour in the area but to renew the area in the same time. This transformation happens by the innovation that will take place in the new urban plan. In this area the already existing ENECO industry will work together with a newly placed campus and new and old firms to find innovations on the subject of water and energy. They can use the area, both land and water, to show prototypes and inform anyone who is interested in their innovations. Apart from this knowledge centre, also houses and facilities will be placed in the area. This will attract people to the area and in that way the area will get more lively. The plan offers enough green and playgrounds. On the endings of the piers, high rise housing will be placed. This suits to the high rise of Rotterdam, which can be seen from the river. From the city the area can be recognized by the three Marconi towers in the North-East side of the plan.

MOVEMENTS TECHNOLOGY PAVILLION

Year 2013 Location Amsterdam, the Netherlands & Singapore, Singapore Status Study

The aim of this assignment was to create a project that looks like an architectural contest. Students worked in teams of two and there were no teachers. Teams could subscribe for a consult of 30 minutes twice a week with either a construction, climate design or building technology specialist. The assignment itself was to design a pavillion which could function both in Amsterdam in April and Singapore in October. Main functions in the building are an exhibition, auditorium, restuarant, bar and meeting rooms. The thought behind the design is to create a pavillion which can be placed anywhere on earth in any direction while it still functions well. To achieve this, the building is able to adjust to its surroundings. The design exists out of an inner volume with an outer shield. The outer shield can change in three different stages, which makes the building able to adjust to the climate around it. These three stages are ‘normal’, ‘closed’ and ‘open’. In the normal stage, the facade of the shield exists out of a pattern of perforated panels and plexiglass panels with open sunshading panels. In the closed stage, the pattern of the facade is the same as in normal stage, but the sunshading panels are closed and protect the interior for wind and heavy rain. In the open stage something special happens with the roof. The roof can be moved up and down in every corner with a pulley system. When the roof moves up, the part of the outer facade with the perforated panels moves up as well due to the fact that this part of the facade hangs on the roof. This way, open spaces will be created in the facade which lets the wind through and makes it cooler inside the building.
