ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I love clouds. I wake up every morning wondering which type of clouds will decorate the sky. I am captivated by the grace and freedom of clouds as they journey through space and how, without a care, they embrace and let go of each other in this mystical dance that transforms our heavens into a delightful canvas. For years, I toyed with the question of how to find a way to share my love for the clouds with the world. But with the business of each day, the desire to make this book remained a dream. Concerns about climate change and its potential impacts on our earth spurred the transition of this dream into reality. A project of this nature is always a team effort: from the conception of the idea, taking of pictures, to book design and construction. I have been fortunate to have so many people who helped in many different ways to complete this work, and still others who provided much needed words of encouragement when it was most needed. And so to the many family and friends I discussed this project with and who contributed ideas, suggestions and constructive criticisms and helped in the selection of the beautiful images presented in this book and editing, thank you. You are great treasures in my life. As in probably all cases, there are people who deserve special mention. To my husband, Kobi, thank you so much for your unfailing love and constant support. You are a tremendous source of strength and inspiration in my life and the constant, ever gentle wind beneath my wings. Secondly, to my dear brother, Alfred, who taught me at the age of five that clouds were not masses of floating cotton wool as I had imagined, but air and water, and took the time to explain the concept of “light years” and the “infinite nature of space” in simple enough terms for me to understand; thank you for opening my eyes to the tremendous beauty of our universe.

MY BROTHER

Don’t turn your face away from me, my brother, We are bound by the cords of the earth, Let’s reach out to each other and make amends, Let’s teach our hearts to love again.

PREFACE Clouds consist of air, water and dust particles. They gather together from all corners of the earth and in their journey they bring rain to nourish the earth. In the scorching heat, they bring shade, a gentle repose for the tired traveller. Clouds are shapeless, ever-changing entities. One minute they are, the next minute they are gone. Yet in the brief interludes of their existence, the cycle of life is sustained. There are white clouds and grey clouds, dark clouds and stormy clouds and sometimes there are clouds that are barely perceptible. Against the deep rich expanse of the blue we call sky, the beauty of the cloud is sometimes overshadowed. And so they remain, uncaring, unyielding and in the quietness of their moving, in their formation and their disappearance they grace the earth and give texture to the heavens. Amazing Cloudscapes is a series of photography books of amazing cloud formations or what I call “cloud art, a term I coined to define the beautiful, sometimes recognisable images produced by the clouds as they drift through the sky. It is intriguing, that at the speed with which winds blow and the random nature of the motion of the clouds and the way they collide and merge into one another, there are moments when familiar images are formed. Some images are easy to discern whereas others require careful observation. Some images represent objects that humans can identify. Others are more ethereal. Sometimes there are no images at all; just the stunning beauty of the clouds framed against the sky. Amazing Cloudscapes: People and Faces is the first volume in the series. It is divided into three parts consisting, respectively, of human faces, human forms and inspirational humanoid cloud formations. All the images presented are natural untouched photographs. They serve as a wonderful testament to the mastery of nature and the incredible beauty that surrounds us. The series is dedicated to all lovers of the sky and those who are about to discover the awesome beauty of the shapeless entities we call clouds. Make yourself a cup of tea, coffee or your favourite beverage, sit down, relax and come along as we take this incredible journey to rediscover the beauty of the clouds that adorn our skies.

HUMANITY

Some were born to see the world; Some were born to enjoy the world; Some were born to serve the world; Some were born to rule the world; Some were never born.

“MAN TO MAN”

Shudders and shivers of the melting past,

Tales unspoken that die to live and live to die, Aching hearts of loves unknown, Raking minds of knowledge unseeing, The silent visitation of the surging past …. on the sailing present, …. the seething future, If man could behold through the hour glass of time, The severed effect of the gloomy past on the blooming future, A lingering shadow - alive yet unborn, Lurking slowly in the vestiges of space, - The unborn past treading the sealed future If man only could know, would know, The rippling fortunes of times unlived, Ringing melodies on the tides of the past, And inviting the day to partake in its dance, Nature will be the domain of man, Exploited, yet unplundered, Nature to man, man to nature, Our destinies forever linked through time. ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________
