Tis’ the Season and The Dec 7 DMA Meeting / Christmas Party will be hosted by the New Dawn Theater and the Duluth Merchants Association, with food provided by Chocolate Perks. New Dawn Theater will treat us to Glenn Sarver a short preview of the "A Candle in the Window." The announcement of the DMA Merchant of Year and the new President will be installed. I promise a good time so bring your friends, family and other business folks. The nominal cost is only $10 per person for this event, and this includes the awesome food and beverage. This is my final column for the DMA Gab-RRR as your President. The last 7 years I have spent with the DMA and 3 years on the Board have provided me with a wonderful experience. I had a lot of apprehension when I took over as President for this year, so I want to thank those who believed in me before I believed in myself. First, I want to thank Dennis & Carol Keller for the initial invite to a DMA meeting, then Albert Marquez for ‘pushing’ me onto the board, then Harold Stamey for bringing me on board as his VP and then onto President. THANK YOU!

We have had twelve meetings and hosted speakers from business brokers, social networking experts, probate issues, Duluth & Gwinnett economic issues. We had a first time ever special event featuring an internationally known speaker and author, a charity event to benefit the community, a 5k run, a snow day, Christmas Party, and at each and every meeting networking opportunities … good food…and great people. We upgraded our DMA newsletter to digital format at a cost savings for DMA. We donated over $10,000 to charities this year and awarded a Scholarship to Lindsay Van Pelt. I keep a personal reminder on my desk that says… “When you want what you’ve never had you must learn to do what you’ve never done” ! Again, I thank you. The DMA has been truly a learning experience with many growth spurts for my leadership skills. I want to thank those that believed in me before I believed in myself. But it is not about me; the Board did a fabulous job this year of coming together and making things happen. Thank you for your commitment to the DMA this past year and I look forwarding to working with you in the future.

Dear DMA Members,
Happy Holidays to each and every one of you. Our annual Holiday Christmas Party is just a few days away and I hope that everyone is in good health and spirits and will be joining in the festivities on December 7th at the New Dawn Theater. (There is no way in the world you could have missed this fantastic campaign to make certain that everyone is attends…Rich Daluga…you rock)! Join in the festivities…see your fellow DMA Members in fancy dress and meet the DMA Merchant of the Year! At our Christmas Party we will be honoring Glenn Sarver, President 2010. Glenn has been a strong leader and has introduced us to many innovative ideas and fabulous speakers, including the internationally known Dr. Robert Rolm, PhD. who gifted DMA an evening of insight and personal development education! I am honored that I will be receiving the Presidential Gavel from Glenn (a mentor and a friend) and will serve as your 2011 DMA President. Also that evening you will meet some new faces and greet some familiar faces when the 2011 DMA Board is presented. The year 2011 is just around the corner and this past year has been some ride. What 2011 will present remains to be seen, but as your President, the Board and I want to make certain that DMA is the best it can be and that will be with your membership and participation. You will see a new emphasis on expanding our membership in the Duluth community and beyond. Growing the membership is great for all and will expand the networking opportunity for all as well as see new professional relationships develop. The monthly meetings will be hosted by DMA Members and will continue to be on the first Tuesday of the month…unless noted on the calendar. That way you can always have concrete plans for the First 3
Tuesday of the Month. The meeting host will present the membership with a presentation about their particular area of expertise and give everyone the opportunity to network with fellow merchants, business owners, not for profit organizations, city, county, state and entrepreneurs! What a great way to expand your knowledge about current business trends, success business ideas, and having that wealth of experience available for you to draw upon. Remember what the DMA is all about… The DMA Mission Statement is: The DMA was conceived with the idea that as business people we can best accomplish together what no one could do alone. It is an association for members to participate in and improve the Duluth Community. THE DMA Purpose: To promote the general welfare of our members, by interacting with fellow members, their community, and city, county, and state governments. To advise our members on pending government actions of local significance. To foster a spirit of cooperation and trust between our members and the community, and between our members and the city government. To promote the highest business standards among our members. To discover better business methods for our members through personal networking and outside guest speakers. To promote the economic interest of all members of the association. So…Mark your Calendars…see you on December 7th (Pearl Harbor Day) at the New Dawn Theater, and then on January 4th at Howard Brothers, Inc. for the First Meeting of 2011. A very Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Happy New Year to everyone. May 2011 be the best year…so far!
