Amarillo CVC Hires New Convention Sales Manager in Austin

2011 International Route 66 Festival Lands in Amarillo & TX Panhandle

By: Eric Miller, CVC Director of Communications

By: Eric Miller, CVC Director of Communications

The Amarillo Convention & Visitor Council, a part of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, has hired a new convention sales manager for the important state market.

Route 66. It’s a legendary image, from the Dust Bowl, to Grand Canyon vacations with wig wam motels, to cruising in classic cars, to a rebirth through animation.

Cherry Kay Abel joins the convention sales staff as the office’s first full-time representative in Austin.

And this year all the Route 66 attention focuses on Amarillo June 9-12 for the annual Route 66 International Festival.

“This hire is great from two points of view. First, Cherry Kay brings lots of experience in the meeting planning and sales world to the staff. And second, her extensive Austin contacts will help the Amarillo CVC remain competitive, as other Texas cities are placing full-time convention sales representatives in Austin,” Jerry Holt, Amarillo CVC Vice President, says.

Hosted by the Texas Old Route 66 Association, Historic Route 66 Merchants Association and the Amarillo Convention and Visitor Council, the festival is packed with special events over four days all along Texas’ 176-mile length of the Mother Road. Enthusiasts are expected from across the country and around the globe.

Her primary sales territory will be the state associations so prevalent in the state capital. “After years of experience planning meetings and conventions for Texas Health Information Management Association, I am ready to take on the challenging world of sales and promotions for the Amarillo CVC,” Abel says.

The highlight of the festival will be a street party on Amarillo’s Historic Route 66 and the 85th Route 66 Birthday Party and Awards Banquet at Sunset Center, both on Saturday, June 11. Thanks to festival sponsors including Budweiser of Amarillo; EagleRider Motorcycle Tours; Quayside Publishing Group; City of Shamrock, TX; Amarillo National Bank; Amarillo Convention & Visitor Council; The Route 66 Alliance; McDonald’s; Eastridge Lanes; Oldham County Merchants in Vega & Adrian; and Xcel Energy. And special thanks to the City of Amarillo for help planning the street party on Saturday, June 11.

She is completing her Certified Meeting Professional credential this summer.

Events may be added or dropped as planning continues. Keep current at the festival web site at

Abel graduated from Concordia University in Austin, TX, in 1996 with a BA in Business Management.

Regardless, Route 66 nostalgia will be in the air across the Texas Panhandle!

Her first day on the CVC staff was May 2. She replaces Tiffany Redinger on the CVC convention sales staff.

Summer is almost here and we can hardly wait. Why? Some of our most fun Chamber networking events take place outdoors in the sunshine. We’ll be putting on our boots and jeans to eat some tasty food at the fairgrounds for the Coors Ranch Rodeo Cowboy Style After Hours. It’s a great way to kick off a weekend after work on Friday, June 3rd with friends and colleagues, and then you can take in the rodeo that evening. Then in just a few weeks we’ll be celebrating our 4th Annual Summer Fiesta with great food, cold beverages and live music on the Chamber grounds on Thursday, June 23rd. Not quite like BBQ Cook-Off, this event lets you have fun and food in a smaller setting...perfect for reconnecting with coworkers, board members and customers. On July 28th we’ll tee up some fun with the Chamber Open. This event has been sold out since March, so everyone knows how fun it is. You can’t beat networking on the green with great food from Outback. It’s a busy season, but we love it and hope to see you out and about at one of these great events. As always, tell us how we are doing. Give us your suggestions, feedback, and input. Feel free to write on our Facebook wall. Get involved. We are YOUR Chamber.
